Parasol New Arrivals • October 30, 2007

Hey hey!

Have we got some stories for you today. Well, not really. I was hoping that some of co-workers would be in a festive mood and dress up at work today (and tomorrow) for All Hallows’ Eve but no luck just yet. Jim was eyeballing a pretty swank Buddy The Elf costume but I’m not sure that panned out for him. We also bounced around the idea of sporting mega-dope Tom Selleck-esque moustaches but that one was a little too tough for us to pull off without being relentlessly heckled by Geoff, Paul and Angie.

Phew! Is it hot in here or is it just me? Any way, I know that you’re dying for us to tell you about the new releases but we’re going to keep it under lock and key today and just keep rambling on about subjects unrelated to music.

Ok, twist my arm. We have discovered a bitchin’ band called Tulsa whose “I Was Submerged” album has been in pretty consistent rotation as of late along side the new seven inch single that Parasol pal Ric Menck will be releasing on his Bird Song imprint in the near future. So keep you eyes peeled and your ears to the pavement.

Check out the list below and dig deep because that’s the only way this Halloween hex will be lifted. It would be nice to shift that hex on to the plump squirrels that did the monster mash on the masterpiece pumpkins my family carved. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

A la peanut butter sandwiches,

Royal (& Paul)

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Tulsa "I Was Submerged" CD $9.75 (Park The Van)
Heroic, echoing, near-shoegazing roots-rock with a Laurel Canyon vibe, full of Rhodes piano-induced classic rock charm and modern invention; a truly spellbinding set that begs comparisons to Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket, channeling Neil Young (and sometimes The Byrds) in the same seductive way. Fans of our own New Ruins’ debut album (and late-90s Texan spacerockers The 7% Solution) will find some similar sentiments expressed, sonically and thematically.

New Releases

17th Pygmy, The
Ballade of Tristram's Last Harping
PS, US Formerly known (and perhaps to be known again someday, you never know) as 17 Pygmies, the seventeenth pygmy (Jaxon Del Rey) decided that The 17th Pygmy (are you still following?) was a name that better reflected classic psychedelic direction of the new recordings. Think The 17th Floor Elevator or perhaps The Exploding Plastic Inevitable Pygmy. Consisting of original 17 Pygmies and Savage Republic member Jaxon Del Rey, Jeff Brenneman (formerly of White Glove Test) on Guitars, returning classical Guitarist and now vocalist Meg Maryatt, former Swivelneck and White Glove Test member Tony Davis on Bass, and Drummer Dirk Doucette from you guessed it...White Glove Test, The 17th Pygmy have combined their unique talents to create a musical tribute to the style and inventiveness of some of their favorite music, namely '60s Psychedelia and '70s Classic Rock. Specific musical touchstones will be found in Phil Spector, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Kinks, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and although somewhat out of the box, but to be honest, Nick Cave (the band just loves the guy) are all paid homage to in one way or another as part and parcel of the musical pastiche that is Ballade of Tristram's Last Harping.

Burr, Doug
On Promenade
PS, US New solo album from Lonelies member Doug Burr. On Promenade is 11 tracks soaked in sincerity, heartache, and love. There's twinges of the regulars in it: Wilco, Neil Young, Will Oldham, and maybe hints of Richard Swift and Damien Jurado, though Burr's music is clearly his own. We should mention he was also just nominated for best new musician + best male vocal by the Dallas Observer.

Charalambides
Likeness
PS, US This is a return to the spontaneous composition of previous records such as Houston & Union. Most all of the tracks on this release sprung forth after 'record' was pressed, & were fleshed out via overdubs, editing, & a malfunctioning space echo over the course of the next few months. This departs from the warm psych in favor of the lush & layered vocal strata of Christina's later solo works, & a chillier, more abrasive guitar sound.

Cult With No Name
Paper Wraps Rock
PS, US Hailing from Jolly Old England comes Trakwerx' first international signing and release, Paper Wraps Rock by London's own Cult With No Name. Self-professed "post-punk electronic balladeers" the London duo of Erik Stein (lead vocals/rhythm piano) and Jon Boux (lead piano/rhythm vocals) have created a unique piano/synth (no guitars to be seen!) sound that uncannily captures both the subtlety and sophistication of Erik Stein's personal lyrical stylings. although Paper Wraps Rock has a very prominent "1980's feel" (whatever that means) to it, it would be impossible to categorize their music without references to such important artists ranging in time (and style) as Erik Satie, George Gershwin, Keith Jarrett, Court and Spark era Joni Mitchell and Honky Chateau era Elton John. "'80s" references would have to include Wire, Shriekback, Roxy Music, Tuxedomoon and strangely, 17 Pygmies (no wonder they are on Trakwerx!).

Flynt, Henry
Nova Billy
PS, US This stands as one of the fullest, most beauteous document of Flynt's tenure w/ a full working rock band to date. This covers a damned fine & important moment in his musical career. If the Insurrections laid the foundation for his anti war primitive garage rock sound, the emergence, nearly a decade later is the realization of his own vision of obtuse personal politics ( "I was a creep"), provocative leftwing posturing (check their version of the world communist anthem ("the international!") & a gleefully recombinant spin on southern music.

Butterfly Horse Street
PS, US This Tokyo-based guitarist/singer has shaped an inimitable sound sphere of solitary electric notes that drape across his unearthly moan during the course of two full-lengths & an EP. This adds an unexpected snarl as he erupts into free/noise, wall of sound guitar style. Ferocious & howling, he still paints desolation whether bleeding into the red or as hushed beauty.

Kobol
Extempore
PS, MEXICO L.A.'s Kobol return with a second installment of their jazz inflicted electronica. This time around Kobol showcase their remixing skills alongside new tracks and collaborations. Unlike their previous outing, Broken Ebony, Kobol have cleaned up the glitch in the machine but the smooth panoramic textures over banging down tempo rhythms remain. Murcof, State Shirt and Pepito get the remix treatment while the collaborations with singers Jazz De Mar, Emma Ejwertz and Ximena Sariñana profile Kobol's songwriting craft. Extempore shows how Kobol's production mastery has matured since their debut, providing us with larger than life sound structures that rely on acoustic drums, guitars, digital trickery and lush melodic arrangements. For fans of The Cinematic Orchestra, Galactic, Zero 7, Stateless and Matthew Herbert.

Kybernaughty
Obiekt
PS, GERMANY First there was sight, then there was sound. Recycling and resampling visual input into stereo output - open your ears, and you shall see. Obiekt - a prototype aural painting, the madman's brush on a canvas of sound. A sonic sculpture chiseled out of marble noise. Focused on core competence, each track is built around a drum / bass pattern, with each loop and chop being selected after careful study of industry benchmarks. The rest is outsourced to a sonic case generator. Fed random pieces of audio material, it distills all the non - percussive elements of a track.

Lindstrom
Contemporary Fix EP
PS, NORWAY After the critically acclaimed album "A Feedelity Affair" that compiled all of Lindstrom`s seminal 12"s, Smalltown Supersound follows up with this EP. The EP features the original version of The Contemporay Fix as well as a alternative version by Lindstrom himself called Serious Syntoms version. Also features a fantastic remix from EYE of The Boredoms who delivers a raving tribal-disco mix that none other than EYE could produce, and a remix by the innovator of the Norwegian disco scene, BJORN TORSKE. This is Cow-Fi
PS, US At times like a delicate update of Soft Machine, at other times recalling the offbeat insanity of Joe Meek, the deep psych vibes of Edan or the otherworld pop of Grandaddy, this is nothing if not unique & in these increasingly conservative times, a welcome breath of fresh air amongst the mass of slop rock & techno bores that abound.

Magic Mushroom Band
Spaced Out [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Despite the fact that it was the Magic Mushroom Band's first album to reach a slightly wider audience, Spaced Out is a transitional effort, perhaps best exemplified by its opening cut, "Astralasia." This long-building instrumental tune is ambient, trippy and highly dancefloor-focused... The off-shoot Astralasia (not a coincidence, considering the moment-defining quality of the track by the same name) is just around the corner, something that is made palpable in most of these tracks. Here the psychedelicspace pop and ambienttrance sides of the band intermingle naturally, the latter caught in the process of being born out of the former. That is why Spaced Out is such an interesting album. The songs still hold all the typical traits of the Magic Mushroom Band's brand of accessible psychedelic rock, while "Astralasia" and "Squatter in the House" aim at the dancefloor, and other instrumentals like "Equasian," "Aquasian" and "Aravinda" explore more ambient, almost new agey pastures. It may seems eclectic on paper, but in the long run Spaced Out sounds surprisingly coherent... The presence of guest saxophonist/flutist David Jackson (of Van Der Graaf Generator fame) also provides a few highlights. This is one of the group's finest efforts and an excellent place to start exploring its discography."

Marching Dynamics
Nailsleeper
PS, GERMANY The path you're about to take was sculpted, paved and designed by S. Talada. He began his musical experimentations and creations in 1987. Talada's musical experience is in many styles/forms as he has worn many hats, masks and attires (with various bands and music projects) for the last 20 years. He has worked with cult groups (such as punk/industrial STG as a vocalist) and a programmer for death rock projects and as a keyboardist for Kommunity FK -Talada also runs and operates the Los Angeles industrial/electronic music label Mechanismz. As "Marching Dynamics" Talada steps beyond his unique and varied musical endeavors. A new force that will surprise/inspire you and will be heard for years to come. "Marching Dynamics" astounds the listener with its intricate arrangements of rhythms and melodic sounds. The narrative nature of "Marching Dynamics" is extremely meditative and thus evokes emotional response of wanting to dance/move with a flow that few musical projects can create. Influential inputs range from noisy, technoid electronic, kicking classic Detroit to energetic dubstep/idm hybrids. All of which are analyzed, assimilated and processed into a unique blend of synthesized analeptics for mind and body.

Curses Sing
PS, US Again recording their album completely by themselves, RR have tread a long road, losing a bassist, hiring a handful more, recording the bass lines themselves & ultimately taking a few perfectionists' swings at the final product before overcoming the sophomore pitfalls that ultimately inspired Curses Sing. Time hasn't mellowed them instead seemingly encouraging even more complicated rhythms, brutally heavy twists & turns, and antagonistic melodies.

Sambassadeur
Migration
PS, SWEDEN Migration is a sparkling pop album, where breezy vocals meet deceptively sunny arrangements that perfectly wrap up the most heartfelt melodies. Biography: Sambassadeur debuted on Labrador in winter 2005 with the release of the "Between the Lines"-EP. The EP was followed by their self-titled debut album later that year. The songs were all recorded at home which gave the production a primitive quality that labeled them by some as being a lo-fi-twee act. This was never the bands intention. If the cliché is that songs are like children, then Sambassadeur saw no purpose in stagnating in front of their home-computer while watching their kids being taken custody by those who didn't have the ability to, indeed, read between the lines and see through the understated surface of the songs. This called for some change. The EP "Coastal Affairs", released in may 2006, marked the start of a development towards a more luxurious setting. Without loosing their enigmatic qualities, songs like "Kate" and "Marie" introduced a breeze of new confidence. The Sambassadeurs saw the opportunity to take things to even greater heights and returned to the scene in late august 2007 with "Subtle Changes".

Tulsa
I Was Submerged
PS, US As comforting & timeless as the songs are, they retain a melodic eeriness that could leave the listener feeling unsettled were they not so impeccably crafted. A dreamy concoction of reverberated vocals & sepulchral guitars layered upon fervent percussion & the defining touch: the asymmetrical tones of a Fender Rhodes, which cascade throughout the recordings. Its often the Neutral Milk Hotel or Neil Young tag that is pinned to Tulsas sleeve, and they wont deny that. But theres actually much more that they try to accomplish. If theres a middle ground between the Carter Family & Can, Tulsa has discovered it.

Barzin
Barzin (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, UK "Barzin's self-titled debut album is a gorgeous marriage of mood, minimalism and melancholia. Imagine Slint's quieter moments or Hayden's more gothic opuses and you'll have an idea of Barzin's approach... This is a morose masterpiece, an exercise in understatement that leaves the listener wanting more..." "... a sad beauty worthy of entry among the slow-core canon of Red House Painters, Cat Power, Low, et al". These are some of the many praises showered on the eponymous debut album of Toronto singer/songwriter Barzin, which was originally released in North America on Where Are My Records (2003), and also had a short-run release in France and Italy on the French label Ocean Music. Since 2004, it has been out of print in Europe, and will now be available for the first time worldwide. The follow-up album, 'My Life In Rooms' was released in Europe in 2006 and was similarly acclaimed, leading to a demand for the re-issue of the S/T debut. A new album is scheduled for release in 2008. "This eponymous CD boasts ripe writing skills, delicate arrangements, and exquisite production. Barzin's songs originate from the melancholic indie rock of Low, with hints of the American neofolk current...There is no weak moment on this album". Recommended (4/5) - All Music Guide.

Birchville Cat Motel
Seventh Ruined Hex (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, US A further step out in Birchville Cat Motel's ruminations on time space distortion featuring the additional mystical talents of fellow gravity destroyer, Matthew Bower (Hototogisu/Sunroof!). Seventh Ruined Hex presents like a lonesome planet, occasionally struck with super-sized fragments of space detritus, but for the most part just hangs around, spinning on its axis and doing fuck-all. Strangely emotive for 'a buncha noise'. Like the deepest love, its warm yet tenuous, and filled with the ever-present potential for loss and brutality. More in line with the estranged love-tangle of the Birchville classic 'Chi Vampires' than the most recent befuddling hyperspace rock-overload of recent albums like 'Our Love Will Destroy the World' and 'Birds Call Home their Dead'. Features Matthew Bower who has been known to put out a good album or two on a regular basis. Powerful. Beautiful. Masculine. Girly. Loud. Tender. Heavy. Soulful.

Brother Kite, The
Moonlit Race (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Over a year in the making, The Brother Kites Moonlit Race EP has undergone several conceptual changes as time has moved on. The final product is one to cherish. Originally conceived as a single for Get On, Me - arguably the catchiest song on their masterful sophomore album Waiting For The Time To Be Right the EP stays true to form by leading off with that track. From there on, the listener is treated to five exclusive tracks. We are treated to alternate versions and mixes of two album tracks from WFTTTBR, including the title cut and Hopeless and Unsung. A never-before-released live version of Never in Years from a WERS 88.9 radio session in Boston is also included. Sandwiched in the middle of the disc are two solid non-album tracks. Unearthed/Digging in the Dirt is taken from DJ Potters creepy child-zombie short film Of All That Is Unearthed. The track Half Century appears here in hard-copy format for the first time. The track was originally recorded for the most recent Adult Swim download compilation entitled Warm and Scratchy, and saw the band sitting comfortably alongside an impressive array of indie notables such as The Rapture, TV On The Radio, The Raveonettes, Fennesz, Broken Social Scene, The Liars, Asobi Seksu, Amusement Parks on Fire, Les Savy Fav and more. In addition to the six audio tracks, the CD has enhanced content featuring three videos! The alternate version of Hopeless and Unsung gets paired with an artistically shot video. I'm Not The Only One has been a fan-favorite over the past year, having been downloaded off the band's website and YouTube more than 5,000 times. The video is beautifully and professionally shot, and appears here on an official format for the first time. The disc is wrapped up with a funny, behind-the-scenes, home-shot video by the band about the recording of the penultimate album track Get On, Me.

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

By The End Of Tonight/Tera Melos
Complex Full of Phantoms (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Coming off the heels of the scarcely limited 3" CD series - and a full two years after the release of their debut album - BY THE END OF TONIGHT has finally dropped the anvil of badass on us with six new jams. In the two years since the release of their brilliant "A Tribute To Tigers", BTEOT have toured almost non-stop, playing every rock club, living room (or even barn) that would have them. Their relentlessness has paid off, as their half of this split album with good friends and like-minded power jammers TERA MELOS is far and away their most accomplished work to date. Not to be outdone, Sacramento's Tera Melos have also been on the road more than they've been home this year, touring with the likes of Fall of Troy and Horse the Band. Their frantic, absurdly complex songs are the perfect compliment to By the End of Tonight's darker, more sinister instrumental metal. Though both bands play a hyper-catchy, addictive form of spastic punk, Tera Melos brings to mind a hybrid of fellow Sacramento speed freaks Hella and Cap'n Jazz, while BTEOT draws an unfathomable arc between Blink 182 and The Jesus Lizard. The combination makes this by far the strongest release to date from either band.

A Perfectly strange mix of Gothic, Psychedelic and Punk the albums uneasy urgency may leave some people wondering what they've just witnessed. Citay
Little Kingdom (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Welcome to CITAY'S "Little Kingdom." It's an otherworldly place, full of psychedelic swirl, soaring harmonies and grandiose jams. "Little Kingdom" is the second album from San Francisco's Citay. It's an epic journey, and an album that sounds out of place in 2007 - a classic in the purest sense. Like Citay's 2006 self-titled debut, the '70s rock sensibility is intact; Thin Lizzy, acoustic Led Zeppelin, Big Star and the Byrds all remain touchstones. But "Little Kingdom" moves further into ambitious composition, referencing Popul Vuh, Animals-era Pink Floyd, the Fripp-Eno collaborations, and early Mike Oldfield. The twin leads are still huge, the ballads still sweet, but Citay is reaching for more on "Little Kingdom." "Little Kingdom" is lush and beautiful; a grand, epic work that harkens back to day when studio excess was encouraged and a premium was placed on composition. To borrow a line from Arthur's review of Citay's debut, "this is an album without a sell-by date, with a song for every season."

Cline, Nels/Carlos Giffoni/Alan Licht/Lee Ranaldo
Nothing Makes Any Sense (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, US A constantly shifting and engaging long-form piece of developed drone, foreboding melody, and harsh grit, Nothing Makes Any Sense finds Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Nels Cline (Nels Cline Singers, Wilco), and Alan Licht pushing their guitars into a cacophonous state that bears much influence from the post-jazz fields they've all cut their teeth in, but also bearing down a forceful brutality that has sometimes eluded their past material. While Carlos Giffoni uses his analog Synth mastery to adequately contend and mesh seamlessly with the trio of strings, letting his analog noise pulsate and pierce with its own sense of contained stampede. This collaboration was recorded in February of this year at the sadly defunct NYC venue Tonic and was mixed and mastered by the ubiquitous James Plotkin. Included with the packaging are ink drawings from Lee Ranaldo and a review of Lou Reed's live classic Rock N' Roll Animal by cult musician/Creem scribe Peter Laughner, which includes a line which bestowed this album with its title.

Club 8
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming (ON SALE/ PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, SWEDEN Club 8 is finally back with their long awaited sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is everything we'd ever hoped it would be - it's pop music at it's most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least. After having released three albums in just over two years time, very few expected they'd have to wait over four years for a new Club 8 album. Some even started to assume the band had split up. In May 2007 the band returned with the amazing Tropicalia-influenced "Whatever you want" which rapidly became a huge blog hit - top 10 most blogged songs according to music blog aggregator Elbo.ws The waiting's been so long we can almost, but just almost, talk about a comeback album. However, waiting's not always a bad thing. Not only has songwriter Johan Angergård released three albums with The Legends and one with Acid House Kings in the time in between - Club 8 has evolved in to one of the most personal and emotional bands around today. Not that previous albums have lacked emotional depth, that's far from the truth, but "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is truly different and a very very special album. The fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death arrives in the shape of twelve perfect pop songs in a summer dress. It's mix of sunshine and melancholia is just as unique as it's profoundly moving.

Connors, Loren
As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS,US "As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002" is a 2xCD set of Loren Connors' most melodically rich and stunning miniature compositions. Inspired by O'Carolan's airs and other Irish airs of the past these works, recorded from 1992-2002, are melded with Connors' distinctly personal adaptation of the blues. He considers these 43 pieces his complete airs. The collection is culled from 10 albums (eight of which are out of print) and one single, including his groundbreaking "Hell's Kitchen Park" (BLACK LABEL, 1993), "Moonyean" (ROAD CONE, 1994), as well as obscure titles like "St. Vincent's Newsboy Home" (ITEM RECORDINGS, 1998) and "Lullaby" (CARBON, 2001) plus four unreleased airs. Nearly the entire critically heralded "Airs" (Road Cone 1999) is remastered and included as well. Digital Dance
Treatment (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, UK 16 tracks. The definitive anthology by cult Belgian post-punk band Digital Dance, a group often name-checked but seldom heard. One of the first and best new wave bands in Belgium, Digital Dance formed in Brussels in July 1978 by singer/guitarist Jerry WX and guitarist Stephan Barbery. The group, which also included keyboard player Jean-Marc Lederman, released their first single on Disques Vogue in late 1979. Digital dance recorded four singles - Radio-Activity, Faulty, Treatment and Three Meanings - as well as a self-titled cassette album, and another single under the name Jung. Although John Peel championed Faulty in the UK, and the band played several high profile live shows (including a residency at the Gibus Club in Paris and a support slot with Joy Division at Plan K in January 1980), Digital Dance failed to break through and split early in 1982. Various members subsequently played in groups as diverse as Fad Gadget, Marine, The Revenge, Kid Montana, Snowy Red, The Weathermen, The Names and Ink. Sadly singer Jerry died in 2000. As well as new artwork, the 70 minute CD also includes detailed sleeve notes and an assortment of period images and graphics.

Drift, The
Ceiling Sky (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US When "Noumena" was released, critics and audiences were polarized. It would seem that "Streets" and "Nozomi" - less than twenty minutes of music combined - had provided enough for THE DRIFT to already have expectations to live up to, whether they liked it or not. At times glacially paced, "Noumena" ventured into the darker, lonelier regions of jazz, dub, and ambient rock, where "In A Silent Way" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" coexist in sinister harmony. The trumpet freak-outs and Beefheart-inspired guitar stabs were fondly missed, while the increased attention paid to atmosphere was applauded. What critics and most fans didn't get to hear were the two extra tracks included only on the 2xLP vinyl edition of "Noumena" (including, ironically, the title track from the album). These two tracks sprawled to lengths and depths only alluded on their debut 12". "Ceiling Sky" collects these previously rare, vinyl-only tracks onto CD for the first time. In addition, the limited edition (rmxs) 12" released earlier this year - featuring remixes by FOUR TET and SYBARITE - is included to complete the collection. In total this is an hour's worth of enchanting, haunting music that only a handful of people have had the pleasure to hear until now. That should be just enough to get us through the wait for the next proper full-length from The Drift, due in spring 2008.

Final Fantasy
Alphabet Series - X - (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US FINAL FANTASY'S OWEN PALLETT returns triumphant after the universally acclaimed "He Poos Clouds" with a pair of tracks newly recorded in Montreal with BEIRUT'S ZACH CONDON. Both songs pre-date the Polaris- winning full-length but have come to be known as staples of Mr. Pallet's live performances. "Hey Dad" begins in an unassuming dream- state only to build to a gorgeous drum-roll and tambourine march. "What Do You Think Will Happen Next?" seeks a life sans cigarettes with a tight rock drum, nearly synth-sounding violins, and the help of Mr. Condon's signature horns. Final Fantasy is scheduled to release his next full-length, "Heartland," in the fall of 2008.

Frantic, The
Audio and Murder (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Like hometown pop-punk heroes ALKALINE TRIO, THE FRANTIC'S music has found that fragile balance between pop and punk that can simultaneously cause a nose bloodying circle pit and mass sing-a-longs. Like the hair metal bands of the 80's, of which The Frantic sound nothing like, these guys are set on enjoying life as a rock 'n' roll band. They're not here to make a fashion statement and their main goal is to play for as many people as possible. After playing the same venues in their same small town for 4 years, they're bursting to get on the road and take on the world. Well, here they come.

Froese, Jerome
Shiver Me Timbers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, UK Jerome Froese has been an integral member of Tangerine Dream for 15 years. Like on "Neptunes" everything you hear is mainly based on guitars but in some places it sounds quite different to its predecessor. You'll find spherical guitar walls and arpeggios as well as distorted and disturbing moments. "Shiver Me Timbers" opens another chapter that is definitely linked to Jerome's handwriting.

Two Point Discrimination (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US "Two Point Discrimination" marks GOLDMUND (aka KEITH KENNIFF)'s 3rd release after his highly praised debut "Corduroy Road" and followup 7" "The Heart of High Places" for TYPE RECORDS. Part of WESTERN VINYL'S "Portrait Series", this collection features 11 short pieces for solo piano focusing on the sensation of touch and its relationship to sound. In the spirit of composers such as Howard Skempton and Morton Feldman, composition and sound culminate together as space is something that is dealt with directly. And interpretation along with improvisation are both tools that blur the lines between composer, performer and listener.

As with their debut album Gustafsson & Nilssen-Love`s punkrock roots are highly visible & the musical expression is an explosion of energy created by breath & muscles. Headcount
To The Point (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, UK The third album from Oxford's Punk/Metal trio Headcount and their second for Malicious Damage. The album follows 2004's critically acclaimed Die Monkey Die album which gave the band substantial radio exposure - BBC Radio 1, a guest appearance on Radio 6's Bruce Dickinson Show, Total Rock Radio and worldwide international radio including a live interview on Swedish radio and extensive college radio plays in the USA. To The Point continues in the brash, loud, heavy but melodic vein that has come to characterise the band's sound. One journalist described Headcount as sounding like "Therapy? Sodomising Adam and the Ants". Another one suggested "Headcount rock like hell-bound pig-fucking devil dogs". Neatly put say we! The new album features 11 uncompromising slabs of punk rock fury with lead tracks Control and Gravy Train addressing the regular Headcount topics of religion, politics and social commentary. Headcount are never shy of covering controversial subjects, but there are one or two surprises here also, as the songs reflect the development in the band's maturity. To The Point was recorded and produced by Headcount in their own studios, surviving monsoons, gas explosions and roof collapses. All in a day's work for these boys! The band will be gigging nationwide during October & November. Tracklisting Enough Is Enough, Control, Bleed, Gravy Train, Daddy, Mother Earth, Misery, It's a business doing pleasure with you, They only let you have it if they know you'll bring it back (aka Davinci Ode), Why Me?, Red Mist.

Hefner
Breaking God's Heart (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK When first released in July 1998 Hefner's debut album; 'Breaking God's Heart' was quite out of step with other guitar bands of the time. The sparse, folksy arrangements and dry, scratchy production was at odds with the ambitious, string laden brit pop of the time. Although Hefner had the tunes to win them support from the NME and Steve Lamacq, their idiosyncratic, leftfield approach meant their most loyal supporter was going to be John Peel, recording 7 sessions for him in their short career. Lead singer; Darren Hayman's primary influences were folk, country and the American lo-fi indie of the time. Hayman rejected an American singing style in favour of his own Thames estuary accent and sang carefully observed songs about lost love in East London and Essex. Hefner never crossed into the mainstream but they had an unusually loyal following who still believe them to be the best of their kind. This smaller, intricate, personal music is missed today. This release expands the album to a 2 CD set and includes all of the B-sides and associated singles, the rare first two singles, the long deleted Hefner Soul EP as well as unreleased recordings. Hefner's other 3 albums will be released in similar formats through out 2007 and 2008.

Hepburns, The
Something Worth Stealing (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US CD digipak with 24 page booklet in English & Japanese. Pearly guitar pop in the finest UK tradition, albeit skewed sideways by cinematic caprices and elliptical narrative. Probably the Hepburns' lightest album, "Something Worth Stealing" was written as a romantic fling with no skeletons in the closet...well, unusually few skeletons by Hepburns standards, discounting the up-tempo duet with the dead guy who comes back to woo a former lover, the ghostly coal mine choir in the jazzy shadows on the ditty about the strongman's cape, and, perhaps, the ode to Scooby-Doo's Velma. This album is more a celebration of joyrides, spring storms, dinosaur incisors, winter fashions, boho wannabes, humdrum and conundrum, the occasional poisoned dart, and the use of the word "penultimate." SWS showcases the blossoming of the Hepburns' association with White & White (brass and flute, respectively) which started halfway through the sessions for the last album. In addition to the Hepburns' trademark organ and vibraphone riff-laden, jazz- and ska-tinged jangle, topped with words that could have only been penned by Matt "all Welshmen are Liars" Jones, the new album features the song everyone has been waiting to hear since the last album: "The Last Thing I Saw Before I Said Goodbye." Digipak plus 24 page illustrated booklet with lyrics and commentaries by Jones in English (with Japanese translations by the esteemed Jun Kurihara). File under fiction. For fans of: el Records, The Lucksmiths, The Monochrome Set, The Smiths, The Specials, Momus and Jake Thackray. The Hepburns tour the US in November 2007 and Scandinavia in December 2007.

High Mountain Tempel
A Screaming Comes Across The Sky (The Faultline Scriptures) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, US A darker ritual and a new herald. From California duo High Mountain Tempel, "A Screaming Comes Across The Sky" is the soundtrack to your next Apocalypse. Arising from the golden ash of their last release "Pacific Sky Burial" (Lotushouse) this outing finds our intrepid travelers exploring new sonic and thematic terrain. HMT is the eternal sound questing project of Eric Nielsen and Keith Boyd. Eric has done time in and with Maquiladora, Buzz or Howl and various Japanese underground outfits such as Acid Mother's Temple , Astro and High Rise. Keith is a self-made musical alchemist weaving strands of aural gold from base material and mud. Together they bring you a fine distillation of ritual music for these blackened times. Drawing inspiration from sources such as Robert Rich, SunnO))), Terry Riley, Lustmord, Phillip K. Dick, Arthur Rimbaud and HP Lovecraft, High Mountain Tempel is an introspective yet outward reaching labor of love. This is music as voyage, dragging your nervous system out to the Cosmos with no plans on returning. Continuing in the tradition of their last disc this project is an intensely beautiful hand-screened work of art. So don your cloaks and grab your tomes, the ceremony is about to begin.

Hisato Higuchi
Butterfly Horse Street (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Tokyo-based guitarist/singer HISATO HIGUCHI has shaped an inimitable sound sphere of solitary electric notes that drape across his unearthly moan during the course of two full-lengths and an EP. Channeling loneliness and desires as elegant six-string tone poems, Higuchi has reached the heights of fellow travelers from Meredith Monk to Charalambides. Though Butterfly Horse Street adds an unexpected snarl as Higuchi erupts into free/noise, wall of sound guitar style that echoes the most ecstatic string manipulation of Masayuki Takayanagi or Donald Miller (Borbetomagus). Ferocious and howling, Higuchi still paints desolation whether bleeding into the red or as hushed beauty.

PS, US Hologram makes its North American debut via the n5MD imprint with their album "hologram +." "hologram +" melds together detailed post-rock instrumentation, subtle electronic textures, and thoughtful, yet meaningful, female vocals. While their carefully crafted songs may seem a bit out of place on a label founded on emotional electronics, upon further listens one finds that they are right at home amongst such kindred spirits as labelmates lights out asia and bitcrush. Hologram's direction reflects an original take on familiar genre themes, but pushes way beyond specific genre trappings by tossing aside the clichés and commonality to focus on the raw emotion involved in creating music. Hussy's, The
We Expected (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)

Their May 2007 single "We Expected" reached number 22 on the UK indie charts. "Each song the Hussy's play is pop par excellence, dipping into whichever musical genre they feel like and wrapping it into a bona fide contemporary pop song a la Scissor Sisters." - Alex McCann, Designer Magazine. This "We Expected" mini album is a perfect introduction to their burgeoning cargo of hits. The Hussy's recently licensed an unreleased new song "Rock Concert" to American shoe company, Payless

Ifwhen
We Will Gently Destroy You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Formed by Merc a founding member of the post-shoegaze band All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors - Ifwhen has been spreading their somewhat noisy, especially melodic and oddly structured music throughout NYC and beyond. ANL+LF had worldwide acclamation with 3 LPs released in the US, Europe and Japan. Their sound was considered unique to their peers due its complexity both sonically and compositionally. That band disbanded in the early 2000s and Merc rose from the ashes to form Ifwhen, taking the complexity and sonic attitude to the next level. With a live show including a real time visual artist creating live projections and an immense arsenal of sound, Ifwhen are not meant to be merely listened to ~ they need to be experienced. We Will Gently Destroy You was mixed by Däleks Oktopus at Deadverse Studios in early 2007. The album marks the first US release from Ifwhen. Sounding like very carefully orchestrated chaos, dense walls of sound create multiple rhythms. Melody lines intertwine while the bass and drums often find pleasantly awkward, unexpected grooves ~ and those grooves take the foreground when time signatures and key signatures seem to change at any given moment and usually without warning. At times, it almost sounds as if all the band members are playing separate songs. It can be somewhat disorienting. Although it can mess with your head a little if you let it, it's not all about discord. Gentle vocals and melodic hooks float about the songs, managing to consistently keep them slightly pretty around the edges. Amidst the commotion, somehow it all makes just enough sense - convincing you to find that normalcy is just another part of their equation. Influences and elements are certainly present, though difficult to put an exact finger on. Not quite as twisted as Syd Barrett, not as monstrous as Glenn Branca, not as abrasive as the Velvet Underground and not as technical as King Crimson but its certainly all in there. Clairecords vinyl-only sister label Claires Echo will be releasing a split 12 of Ifwhen and Dälek in early 2008.

Japancakes
Loveless (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, US Athens, GA's experimental, instrumental, Americana group, Japancakes cover My Bloody Valentine's classic Loveless record from start to finish with pedal steel and cello in place of vocal and lead melodies -- and without any distortion. MBV's Loveless (Creation: 1991) remains the defining record of the genre and completely unparalleled by any artist since. This is super fun! Japancakes don't record together like other bands. They do play together but when they record in studio they do so one at a time. Each player writes their own part and adds it to the part(s) recorded previously by fellow band members. The result of this practice is that the personality of each individual player is often better captured. Each player's individual performance is strengthened by the technique. Japancakes is Eric Berg, rhythm guitar, Nick Belli, bass, Brant Rackey, drums, John Neff, pedal steel, Heather McIntosh, cello, Andy Barker, production. RIYL: My Bloody Valentine, Shoegaze, Electronica, Americana, Tortoise, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Hammock, Santo & Johnny. TRACKLISTING: 1. Only Shallow, 2. Loomer, 3. Touched, 4. To Here Knows When, 5.
