22 Pistepirkko
(Well You Know) Stuff Is Like We Yeah! [regular version] (ON SALE)
PS, FINLAND New 2008 album from Finnish psych-pop phenoms! The fab
three, back with guitar-based spaced-out bohemian blues-rock and proto-garage-psychedelia,
produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Daniel Johnston, Ween, Bongwater).
Recorded in just 10 days at the band's own Altai studios 22-Pistepirkko
step forward with their idea of impressive simplicity, lively trio-playing
and good melodies. After periods of heavy experiments in electronic
production work, their current concept of keeping things simple was
already their approach for the Drops+Kicks (2005) album sessions.
Now, with the new album one can hear it in full bloom. P-K Keränen's
vocals and guitar playing have gathered depth that one doesn't hear
too often. Additionally, drummer Espe Haverinen simplified his playing
to a great effect and sings more touching songs then on any other
album. Asko Keränen's sonic bass, weird organs and effects add
a room with a view, so specific 22pp and just right for producer Kramer
to play with those bits and pieces in a most gentle and subtle way.
Chris Bailey of The Saints heard it and wrote: "From the first
bars of the opening track you know you are in for a treat, this record
is MAGIC. Each song has its own personality and reference point which
should defy inclusion on the same album yet all combine to create
an astonishing journey through all that is glorious about pop music.
...a stupendous piece of work!"

Acid King
III
PS, US Legendary bay area doom band. Finally on vinyl! Produced with
the help of San Fransico's legendary engineer Billy Ander-son, this
is the album that Lori & Co. were born to make. Filled with thundering
low end & fat ass riffs AK-III will redefine the definition of
the word heavy for years to come. It?s thick & viscous, pooling
together in a meaty muck. AK-III?s one of those albums that re-fuses

Moon Safari: 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition [re-issue]
PS, US PREFIX MAG: "I don't remember getting the royal treatment
when I turned ten. But nowadays, whenever a landmark album reaches
its tenth anniversary, it gets the deluxe re-issue fete. Up this week:
Air's gorgeous, neo-disco masterpiece, Moon Safari. The package includes
two CDs and a DVD. Disc one contains the entire original album. The
second disc contains rarities, live tracks, and remixes by the likes
of Beck and the Moog Cookbook. The DVD features the Mike Mills documentary
Eating, Sleeping, Waiting and Playing, which chronicles Air's first
tour, as well as videos and new graphics by Mills. It all adds up
to three times the sexiness. Seriously, put this album on next time

Arc Lab
The Goodbye Radio
PS, US Medard Fischer returns with his rather cryptically-titled third
album, "The Goodbye Radio". Representing a large step forward
for Fischer's Arc Lab project, the album is structured as a musical
reinterpretation of the sonnet form in which field recordings, organic
instrumentation, radio noise, candid male vocals and snippets of old
public domain recordings meet with the FM synthesis, female vocals
and signature beatwork that made previous Arc Lab efforts so special.
Thematic reference points include the Russian space program, relativity,
female serial killers, and being separated from a soulmate. This diverse
collection of influences gives the album a more personal feel than
previous efforts as there are now human stories attached to Fischer's
Arc Lab scheme. Genre specific sign-posts or "this-meets-that"
descriptors are really of little use in describing "The Goodbye
Radio" as Fischer has now taken Arc Lab to places where the synthetic
only aid him in the preservation of great music and ideas. But, as
the title may allude to, this may be Fischer's final offering. Let's
hope not. An artist capable of such alchemy would be a significant
loss for all of us. Let's hope the Arc Lab radio stays on and at its
full volume.

Arthur
And Martha
Autovia
PS, UK Featuring Adam of SALOON. "Gilbert & George, disguised
as The Carpenters, steal the hits of Kraftwerk and bash them out on
an old moog in the style of Section 25" Zoot Magazine Arthur
and Martha are stage names. Arthur and Martha are Adam Cresswell and
Alice Hubley. Adam was the founding member of beard-stroking folkatronica
indie-band, Saloon. They played lots of gigs, made some records, shot
to number 1 in John Peel's festive chart and then fell off the side
of the world. Alice was in party-girl band The Duloks (she was the
one who played the music) but wanting to wear something onstage other
than a PE kit or slutty nun's outfit, one night she jumped ship and
also fell off the side of the world. They met, picked themselves up
and on the side of a European autovia somewhere were born again as
Arthur and Martha. By bringing together their rag-tag collection of
moogs, melodicas and an antique drum-machine, they penned the songs
on this disc for you now. 'Autovia' is a foot to the floor 4/4 driving
song; like something Tom Petty would pen were he possessed by the
brain of Kraftwerk and the soul of a maladjusted robot. 'Japanese
Kiss' is the soundtrack to a messy break-up and inevitable argument
over custody of the Pet Shop Boys CD's. 'Squarewave to Heaven' is
the song that Led Zep would have made had Jimmy Page been influenced
by Morton Subotnick rather than Muddy Waters.

Bragg, Billy
Mr. Love & Justice
PS, US New album from Bragg and The Blokes. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Mr.
Love & Justice is...easily Bragg's best and most consistent solo
effort since Don't Try This at Home, and finds him coming to terms
with maturity and the changing face of the world, two bugaboos that
have been dogging his muse for some time. Mr. Love & Justice lacks
a portion of the piss and vinegar of Bragg's earliest sides, but on
these recordings he's learned to communicate with a soulful conviction
that merges passion with a simple and unforced sincerity, and while
Bragg has sung with greater force, he's rarely communicated as well
in the studio as he does here. Bragg also sounds more comfortable
with his backing band than he has since working with Wilco; having
recorded and toured with the Blokes for several years, the musicians
have had the opportunity to gain a rapport with one another, and the
give and take between Bragg and his partners is warm and easy, and
gives the material just the right lift... The scope of Mr. Love &
Justice is often modest, but it speaks with grace, wisdom, and heart,
and finds Billy Bragg a bit older, a bit wiser, and still committed
to fighting the good fight; it's a return to form, a step forward,
and a potent reminder of why Bragg's music still matters."

Burdon, Eric & The Animals
Winds Of Change
PS, UK In these more cynical times, it is easy to see this seminal
album in a somewhat ambivalent light...everybody's favorite Geordie
hell-raiser, Eric Burdon caught on the cusp between being Britain's
Blues-meister supreme and being Hitler out of the producers?! Yet
there is so much more here, two international hit singles, garage
blues and psychedelic jams to match anyone. Produced by bizarrely
unsung Dylan/Zappa/Velvets producer Tom Wilson. This is as amazing
a forgotten gem as the 2 albums them made on tower around the same
time! Tracklist: Winds Of Change / Poem By The Sea / Paint It Black

Chikinki
Lick Your Ticket
PS, UK Not content with pillaging the past for inspiration, this record
see the band take the ambitious step of plugging into the mains and
trying to blast themselves into the future. They bleep, bluster and
blister on this release, which successfully manages to combine their
love for electro-scuzz, hooky melodies and occasionally delicate guitars.
Drum kits are replaced by sensor pads and skittering electronica loops,
guitars are run through code-crunching banks of effects, and it seems
as if only the vocals tether the band down into conventional rock
territory: bounding between a stargazing croon ('Drink') or a Mick
Jagger yelp ('To Sacrifice a Child'), depending on whether the band
are luxuriating in warm keyboard textures or hurtling along at a rate
of electro-rock knots. 'Assassinator 13', is a rollicking opener with
a rib-vibrating bassline, destined to send a sticky crowd into convulsions.
'Ether Radio' sounds like Zoot Woman having fey fisticuffs with The
Coopers, but with more testosterone, whereas 'Hate TV', is a darkly
romantic electro-glam stomp of majestically wasted beauty. But, among
the album's twisted sexual traumas, soundclash confessionals and beat
_mashing party anthems, 'Scissors Paper Stone' stands out as an expansive
rock epic inspired by Chikinki's stadium-sized self-belief during
their early wilderness years. 'They steam through their rock-solid
wall of future hits with a rare, magnetic natural stage charisma'
NME. 'Incendiary sonic-assault shows, professorial keyboard genius
and a singer who dares to be Mick Jagger'. The Face. 'Smells like
the future of rock 'n' roll' The Fly.

Music Heard Far Off

between music heard far off & music finally pulled together. They
present the seemingly disparate dualities of metaphysical improvisation
& meticulous composition in their otherworldly collaboration,
an adventurous take on songwriting unheard since the heyday of Cherry
Red & 4AD (imagine Eyeless in Gaza or Durutti Column nicking from

wastes of sea, songs, drawings, particular times of day & different

You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into
PS, US Does It Offend You, Yeah? have taken the dance music blueprint
laid down by Justice, The Neptunes, and DFA 1979 and have given it

loaded up on Prodigy, Daft Punk, and Devo records, pulled an all nighter
with some broken gear and turned out the dirtiest clean dancefloor
track "Lets Make Out" since Gary Numan made stoned Brit
teens get all sweet and sour to "My Shadow in Vain". Underground
clubs have been pummeled by tracks from Does It Offend You, Yeah since
2006. Rob Bloomfield, Morgan Quaintance, Dan Coop and James Rushent
of DIOY,Y? have remixed Bloc Party, The Raconteurs and Muse. Equal
parts Breakfast Club and Live Aid concert DIOY,Y? have turned the
screws on the Cure, Bowie and Talking Heads influences and wrap the
80's package in a 00's plastic bag. "We Are Rock Stars"
and "Feels Good Being Bad" deliver huge choruses that incite
moshpits, screaming and stage smashing (UK term for destroying property)
during their live show which has been described as "amazing"
and "insanely dangerous". Does It Offend You, Yeah? are

ErikM
Steme
PS, AUSTRALIA Between his reputation as swift shifting improviser,
concrete composer and turntable deconstructionist, Marseilles based
artist ERIKM has earned himself an enviable position in the European
music community. With Stéme, his most ambitious and fully realised
compositional work to date, he devolves and re-contextualizes the
boundaries between sound source and sound media. In essence, Stème
originates from a selection of ten one minute long sound pieces burned
on a CD that was deliberately damaged. These media (music on modified
media or field recording) formed the basis of multiple improvised
session including multiple stages of construction and destruction
of these acoustic matters using my different electronic real time
live music systems (3k-pad8system & MD or CD-dj and electronics).
The resulting sounds are truly distinctive - filigree like sonic details
are brought into sharp focus, tuning the ears with their paced spatial
movements. Occasional grabs of the source sound material appear and
are erased equally as quickly. A genuinely powerful statement of compositional
intent. ERIKM has instinctively followed a relatively unusual, even
risky, career path. Stemming from his interest in visual arts and
his first musical experience as a rock guitarist, he has for some
years now become steadily more and more renowned for his virtuoso
turntabling and his use of electronic instruments and tools in an
integrated scenic set-up eRikm has followed up musical collaborations
with Voice Crack, Christian Marclay, Luc Ferrari, among others. He
is certainly one of the better-equipped artists of the new generation
to actually demonstrate a relationship between rock music (in its
widest sense) and contemporary music ; hiding behind neither cultural
camouflage nor an easy pandering to his audience.

PS, JAPAN Part of a new Universal Japan 70s rock reissue series, called
Naked Line. Legit issues, from masters, midline pricing. Legendary
Japanese underground rock item, first released by Polydor Japan in

Social Gathering is the lone album by the quartet of Shinki Chen (pre-Speed,
Glue & Shinki), Luis Kabe (ex-Golden Cups), Hiro Yanagida (ex-April
Fool, pre-Love Live Life +1) & Hiro Tsunoda (ex-Jacks, pre-Strawberry

histrionics of Shinki Chen and the organ swoosh of Hiro Yanagida,
gusting forth with a sub-bass low-ball thunder. Progressive-psych
jamming with a similar enthusiasm for the attributes of "heavy"
as their contemporaries, Guru Guru. There also some free-form excursions
and unexpected insanity at the end. People's expectations are always
a bit out of whack on this kind of stuff, but this is a very nice
period piece and a powerful document. "The drugs must have been

Harrison, Noel
S-T
PS, UK Noel Harrison was many things, actor, singer, director, composer,
carpenter, Son of Rex and star of the Girl From Uncle opposite the
delectable Stefanie Powers (purrr ). He sang the Oscar-winning the
Windmills Of Your Mind, the theme tune to the 1967 smash movie The
Thomas Crown Affair, and released a string of albums in the 1960s
and 70s before landing his own TV show, Take Time. What is probably
less known is that his self-titled 1966 sophomore long-player is virtually
a tribute to Bob Dylan. so enamored was Harrison of the him, that
he cut no less than four Dylan tunes and casually interspersed them
with the obligatory-forthe- day Beatles. His take on It's All Over
Now, Baby Blue actually fared quite well when lifted as a single.
So here is the album. A snapshot of an innocent time when be-suited
pop stars acted and polo neck-clad TV stars recorded Dylan songs in
an almost outmoded school big band style. Tracklist: It's All Over

HECQ
Night Falls
PS, GERMANY Those who are familiar with Ben Lukas Boysen's 5 year
catalog of work will notice an important change while listening to
this album. His former creations can be seen as explorations of different
sound facets transforming Boysen's feelings into music. it took time
for this artist to subordinate the innumerable technical possibilities
to become implements of his inner self, and he already began to walk
this new path with '0000'. Now, Boysen qualifies 'night falls' as
a turning point in HECQ's personal and musical history, and also as
a conclusion of what HECQ stood for until now. Artistic expressions
of personal experiences are often difficult because these experiences
often block the artist's creativity. In exceptional cases it is possible
to do, one of these cases is 'night falls'. The predominant mood of
the twelve tracks which were recorded as one continuous opus ranges
from teariness and melancholy up to beauty and puissance, unleashed
by discontent, the assurance to need a change, or even a stroke of
fate. Never before has HECQ's music implied such melodic and compositional
richness. Comparing the music on 'night falls' with romantic classical
music seems imaginable; majestic strings interact with electronic
soundscapes to bring sentiments into being. This is a manifestation
of a person who is aware that changes happen, and that changes have
to be made. As Boysen says: the sixth HECQ album will be much more
different - this fifth one is the first of many new steps to follow.

forget. It is an excursion, introducing the upcoming hypnotic beat
and psychedelic sound. A cosmic sitar and meditative vocals intensify
the mystical and floating vibrations of music, coming from the Id's
inner space. The Beatles with Sgt. Pepper, and also the Rolling Stones
with Their Satanic Majesties Request went, little later than The Id,
into similar directions. This well-produced stereo 2LP set contains
extended musician information, (a second LP) contains 10 bonus tracks
with outtakes from the album recording sessions. This is an ultimately
rewarding listening experience on the highest level of creativity
and musicianship.

Kettel
Myam James Part 1
PS, NETHERLANDS Myam James is maximal electronic music. Kettel manages
to squeeze uplifting, warm, cheerful and enjoyable music out of his
kettle and pottery factory, which is sad, melancholic and sensitive
at the same time. See here the paradoxical twist in much of his work.
Beauty lies in the melancholy. Add to this Kettel's profound knowledge
of composition and we guarantee you'll be chained to your speakers
or earphones for the next months. Probably even longer, because Myam
James part II, the sequel, will also be out by then. The album series
is in the vain of his very successful earlier work here on Sending
Orbs, where Kettel lays claim to the title of Duke of Melody and Count
of Charisle, staying surprisingly, but refreshingly true to the roots
of the Warp sound from the 90's. For the Kettel newbies who wonder
how electronic music like this is possible, some background information
comes in handy. Little Kettel was classically schooled on the piano
to exploit his early-discovered musical talent. He loved to listen
to classical music, especially Bach. Pianist Glenn Gould was his first
idol. Because of his brother Kettel joined the electronic music fanbase
in the mid-1990s. A few years before the millennium Reimer started
producing electronic music himself and within no time he put out releases
on pretty labels as Planet Mu and DuB. He also managed to explore
different sub genres of electronic music and to produce remarkable
crossovers. His ambient album Volleyed Iron (2004, U-Cover) became
an instant ambient classic and the Whisper Me Wishes album (2007,
Dub) was critically acclaimed for a fantastic crossover of jazz, classical
music and electronic music. Remixes for artists as Depeche Mode and
Dash Berlin and a Japanese Kettel tour in 2007 are some examples of
his growing recognition and popularity. The Myam James series on Sending
Orbs denotes the next and absolutely greatest highlight on his discography.
Myam James part I is 9 tracks of Kettel ecstasy, a brilliant "My
Dogan" (title track of the My Dogan 2006 album) remix by early
influencers Phoenecia (Schematic/Warp), as icing on the cake, 7 minutes
of remix synthesizer-madness by Secede (putting on his Vangelis-clothes
once again), and as Eising on the icing an immensely surprising digipack
artwork by Jeroen Advocaat inspired by Kettel's current mental condition.

a hit, but Forever Changes continues to regularly appear on critics'
lists of the top ten rock albums of all time, and it had an enormously
far-reaching and durable influence that went way beyond chart listings.
The best fusion of folk-rock and psychedelia, it features Arthur Lee's
trembling vocals, beautiful melodies, haunting orchestral arrangements,
and inscrutable but poetic lyrics, all of which sound nearly as fresh
and intriguing upon repeated plays. One of rock's most organic, flowing
masterpieces, every song has a lingering, shimmering beauty, including
the two penned by the band's other talented songwriter/guitarist/singer,
Bryan MacLean."

Mekons
The Mekons Story 1977-1982 [re-issue]
PS, US Originally released in 1982, also known as 'It Falleth like
the Gentle Rain from Heaven'. 'The Mekons Story' is a collection of
rare and unobtainable tracks from the UK punk legends Jon Langford
describes as 'our revenge on the world.' This 20 track CD includes
brilliant outtakes, unreleased tracks, alternate versions, B-sides,
as well as a handful of live radio sessions recorded between 1977
and 1982 during the first Mekons incarnation. With a drunken sounding
David Spencer providing a between cuts 'history' of the band, this,
more than any other Mekons recording, shows their crucial and comic
post-punk development. From cacophonic punk, primitive disco, agitated
funk and new wave, and synth pop, the consistent thread in this material
is the sheer brilliance of the Mekons' literacy in songwriting.

succinct album that appears inspired by sounds made and/or manipulated
by a laptop computer in the tradition of Christian Fennesz, Oval's

'Loveless'. 'Asobi' (which is a Japanese word meaning 'play') is reminiscent
of the warm digital clicks'n'cuts of the mid-to-late 'Nineties when
the only brazenness left in contemporary music was coming out of Austria
and Germany in the form of Mouse On Mars, Oval, Pita, Fennesz, and
later Jan Jelinek and Radian.

the Bielefeld based trio present a mixture between state-of-the-art
electro pop and instrumental tracks which are a perfect invitation
to listen deeply and to 'lift-off' as well. The opener 'move myself'

unmistakable vocals, driving beats and moods perfectly balanced between
joy and melancholy - once again TRG present the perfect connection
between vogue and sophistication - a trademark they are well-known
for since 'state protection'. Contemporary, inspiring electronic songs,
a guaranteed aural pleasure - which also explains the verve of the

Kimono My House [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remaster and re-release of 1974 album by one of the greatest
art-pop bands of all time. Includes 3 bonus tracks. AMG: "Arguably
one of Sparks' best albums, 1974's Kimono My House finds the brothers
Mael (Ron wrote most the songs and played keyboards, while Russell
was the singing frontman) ingeniously playing their guitar- and keyboard-heavy
pop mix on 12 consistently fine tracks. Adding a touch of bubblegum,
and even some of Zappa's own song-centric experimentalism to the menu,
the Maels spruce up a sleazy Sunset Strip with a bevy of Broadway-worthy
performances here: as the band expertly revs up the glam rock-meets-Andrew
Lloyd Webber backdrops, Russell sends things into space with his operatic
vocals and ever-clever lyrics. And besides two of their breakthrough
hits (the English chart-toppers "This Town Ain't Big Enough for
Both of Us" and "Amateur Hour"), the album features
one of their often-overlooked stunners, "Here in Heaven".
Essential."

Propaganda [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remaster and re-release of 1974 album by one of the greatest
art-pop bands of all time. Bonus tracks include sought-after b-sides
to their UK singles and an interview. AMG: "The band's fourth
album (and second with producer Muff Winwood) is chock-full of great
ideas, including the overseas hits "Something for the Girl with
Everything" and "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth."
With Russell Mael delivering the lyrics in his rapid-fire falsetto,
the lyric sheet is a necessary compass, as the clever wordplay is
a key to discovering what these pranksters are up to. Ron Mael's skewed
take on relationships ("At Home at Work at Play," "Don't
Leave Me Alone with Her") are nearly upstaged by the hyperactive
arrangements, but when the words and the music click, it's pure magic...
Though the similarities to Queen are sometimes striking, they eschew
that band's seriousness and epic guitar work, favoring hit-or-miss
observations that suggest a cross between 10cc and the power pop of
the late '70s. Propaganda remains one of Sparks' brightest achievements,
brimming with a loopy charm that continued to captivate the open-minded
English listeners, if not their close-minded countrymen in the U.S."

Indiscreet [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remaster and re-release of 1975 album by one of the greatest
art-pop bands of all time. Includes 4 bonus tracks. AMG: "Indiscreet,
which was the Mael brothers' third album for Island and their fifth
album overall, is state-of-the-art Sparks. The power pop melodies
are consistently infectious, and the lyrics are as humorous as one
expects Sparks lyrics to be -- nutty gems like "Pineapple,"
"Happy Hunting Ground," "Tits," and "Get
in the Swing" will easily appeal to those who like to think of
Russell and Ron as the pop/rock equivalent of Monty Python's Flying
Circus... Over the years, Sparks has experimented with everything
from hard rock to Euro-disco. But power pop is the primary focus of
Indiscreet, which went down in history as one of the band's best '70s
albums."

Sparks
Big Beat [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remaster and re-release of 1976 album by one of the greatest
art-pop bands of all time. Includes 6 bonus tracks. AMG: "Most
of Big Beat finds Sparks doing what they do best: spewing out clever,
mile-a-minute lyrics over solid rocking accompaniment (this time,
provided by a superior group of studio musicians). Drummer Hilly Michaels
and guitarist Jeffrey Salen lend Ron and Russell Mael's songs considerable
rock & roll authority. Standouts include the opening blast "Big
Boy" (which was featured in the film Rollercoaster), the propulsive
"Fill-Er-Up," and the falsetto-delivered proclamation "I
Like Girls," apparently a leftover from their previous album,
Indiscreet. Generally, however, they eschew the elaborate arrangements
of Indiscreet and go for a powerful, stripped-down sound. As titles
such as "Everybody's Stupid" and "Thrown Her Away (And
Get a New One)" suggest, the album brims with decidedly politically
incorrect (and often hilarious) lyrics."

Taj Mahal Travellers
Live Stockholm July, 1971
PS, SWEDEN New 2008 repress. "Led by infamous Fluxus member Takehisa
Kosugi, Tokyo's Taj Mahal Travellers were one of the prime examples
of a band more heard-of than actually heard. Their vinyl legacy (the
1972 LP July 15, 1972 released on CBS/Sony Japan; the 1974 2LP August
1974 released on Columbia Japan and recently reissued by P-Vine as
a 2CD; one side of the mythical Oz Days Live 2LP compilation released
on Oz in 1973 and recently bootlegged as a single LP) could dig a
hole in your wallet deeper than the Grand Canyon. However, the recent
reissues have spread the gospel and so here is the chance to hear
the young Taj Mahal Travellers live in Stockholm during their 'tour'
through Europe in 1971. It's one 2-hour long improvised track. Enough
free-floating higher key bliss to keep every grown-up space cadet
happy for a lot longer.." From Julian Cope's Japrocksampler:
"This album is a discorporated, cerebral dance whose rhythm sounds
like six weather Gods emulating the cover of Deep Purple's Fireball
by zooming around Silverstone circuit just inches above the track,
each urging himself on by making engine noises: 'Eee-oww-urghh-ow!!!!!!!'
Opening with Ryo Koike's horizontally played bowed double bass, it's
my fave of Taj Mahal Travellers' three releases, better even than
the obstinate medication of the first official LP JULY 15, 1972, because
there's twice as much of it. Meditatively, it's extremely useful too:
at the entrance portals of this live record, Ryo Koike uses his bass
to invoke phlegm phantoms and cranny demons from the butt walls of
Cronosian caverns; conjuring a sound as Biblical as Conrad Schnitzler's
bizarre bowed cello on T. Dream's Electronic Meditation. Gradually,
hesitatingly, almost imperceptibly, a violin theme installs itself,
establishing over the next quarter of an hour clop-clopping hooves
of hollow rhythm that conjure up the image of frustrated pastoralists
driving their reluctant donkeys around the highest and most precipitous
cliff edges, as their valuable cargoes sway and shudder and threaten
to come untied at any moment. Recorded a full year before their first
official LP, I think this in concert album is a far better and more
confident shamanic statement, for this Stockholm recording melded
together all six group members in such a way that no single musician
rises from the primal soup long enough to establish his singular muse.
The vocal effects are truly stunning, evoking everything from comb-and-paper
voices playing Zeus in the sixty-metre deep Dhikhtean Antron to braying
cartoon coyotes laughing to their deaths."

Ternheim, Anna
Halfway to Fivepoints
PS, US Anna Ternheim's first official full-length release in the U.S.,
Halfway to Fivepoints is something of a journey through her already
successful international career. A critical darling in her native
Sweden--where her debut album, 2004's Something Outside, earned her
a Swedish Grammy(r) for Best New Artist--Ternheim has included some
of her oldest and newest material on this album. The lone cover song
on the disc is an exquisitely strippeddown and slowed cover of Fleetwood
Mac's eighties hit "Little Lies." Together, this collection
features quickly-written love stories, tales of loneliness, messy
lives, stalkers and therapeutic kiss-offs to formers lovers. In tracks
like "Lover's Dream," she sought to bring the listener into
another realm, one akin to the grainy, black-and-white world found
in the memorable 1922 film Nosferatu. It's appropriate, as Ternheim's
voice lends a cinematic quality to the disc, at times conjuring Orton's
contemplative alt-folk and even the timeless wisdom of Joni Mitchell--sometimes
within the same song (as on the album-ending title track). Throughout
it all, there's a class to these songs, a beauty to them, and to the
transportative quality of Ternheim's sometimes breathy, sometimes
sweet voice.

Terrible Two
PS, US An athletic rhythm/action unit, made up of 3 free individuals,
subsumed into a collective form that spits out dank, skittering tracks
filled w/ light & dark. They've been building up a reputation
via their live show, which has left audience members joyful, overwhelmed,
& ready to spread the word. A seeming telepathy occurs onstage.
It's safe to say that beat-diggers & electronic artists will have
a rich resource in the recorded output of the band, each track having
the potential to be chopped & screwed, looped & loped into
new soundtracks & sample beds.

Three Day Band (John Fahey/Ayal Senior)
Three Day Band
PS, US John Fahey and Ayal Senior layed down the tracks for Three
Day Band in a Woodburn Hotel room at some point in 1999. These tracks
show an undocumented improvisational side of Fahey. It's certainly
not early period Fahey but not TOTE era either. At night after the
recording sessions commenced Ayal would record Fahey reading and discussing
selected excerpts from his writing. Fifteen tracks of spoken word
Fahey are included. From Ayal Senior's liner notes: I think I first
met John Fahey at a Vince Martin gig in Manhattan at some point in
1998. He was sitting in the back of CBGB's 'other' space, listening
to the gig and painting with fat bright markers in a notebook he carried
around with him. It was impossible not to notice this guy. Big, bald,
white beard, black sunglasses wearing shorts and wool socks with black
basketball shoes in a triple sized red t-shirt. I didn't even know
who John Fahey was, but John Allen, who brought Fahey out to the east
coast and, who I have always greatly admired, learned me to the game.
John Fahey and Vince Martin in the same room. Incredible.

Perfect Unpop Peel Show Hits & Long-Lost Lo Fi Favourites Volume
1 1976-1980 CD
PS, UK Perfect Unpop is based on a dangerous assumption: that if you
were ever touched by John Peel's enthusiasm for spiky 70s pop, then
by now you've probably found yourself a copy of the Undertones Teenage
Kicks . The same applies to raw, beautiful singles by the Buzzcocks,
Joy Division, the Clash and the first five Fall albums none of which
are included here. Instead, here's a collection of Peel favorites
a little less likely to be anthologized, eulogized, or to crop up
on your iPod. Anyone who ever cuddled up alone at night with Peel
will recognize the glee with which he pounced on these devil may-
care, slightly broken pop songs. Indie also-rans these bands may have
been in the Sting n' Bono scheme of things, but add up all these flashes
of underdog genius, and here's a CD to rival any other from the era
of the questionable stringy tie. Although we're missing the voice
that always seemed to be speaking to us alone, the unearthing of these
Nuggets from the play-lists will recreate something of the atmosphere
of the Peel Show for his undercover legions, and hopefully some young
Johnny-cum-Lately's as well. Make no mistake; we're talking all-time
highlights here where six seconds of dead air would be followed by
a sheepish, slightly breathless admission that Peel had been off bopping
around the studio! Tours Language School / Vibrators Whips And Furs

some outsider ambient works and blissed-out pop from their hometown
in Portland as well as friends across the seas. Emphasis was made
to bring together artists from a variety of scenes and different underground
bubbles of music producers that remain close to our hearts. Though
many of the artists may have never previously bumped shoulders it
was important for us in keeping a common thread in the musicality
and a conscious flow to the collection.

On Ne Distinguait Plus Les Tetes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, FRANCE Arca is a French project initiated by Joan Cambon and Sylvain
Chauveau at the beginning of the year 2000. Arca is inspired by music,
cinema, literature, photographs, every day life sounds. Arca uses
"warm" electronic sounds, mixed with organic instruments,
rainy guitars and Sylvain's voice (since the third album) to draw
melancholic landscapes not so far from David Sylvian masterpieces.
Most of the songs are recorded and mixed at home by Joan Cambon. Sylvain
Chauveau made five solo albums: instrumental music based on sweet
harmonies of piano and strings. The latest one is "Down to the
bone", a record of Depeche Mode covers. He was also part of the
former projects Micro:mega and Watermelon Club.
