Parasol New Arrivals • August 21, 2007

Dearest friends,

Now the time has come to trade in your hip jean jackets for powdered white wigs. No, we’re not talking about that Amadeus fella but rather the new double disc from William Kinderman titled “The Diabelli Variations” on PLG’s new classical imprint, Arietta. You might be surprised to find out that we Parasolians aren’t nailed down to one genre so with that said, hip your ears to the sound of yesteryear with the talent of Mr. Kinderman’s take on this, one of Beethoven’s classic jams. We’re gettin’ all nineteenth century up in here.

Also, fret not, for those who have ordered the New Pornographers box sets, they are in transit to you as we speak and oh, are you ever in for a treat.

Check out the list below and we’ll be here if anything’s a brow raiser.

High and tight,

Royal & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Wiliam Kinderman/BEETHOVEN "Diabelli Variations" Deluxe DCD $16.00 (Arietta Music)
Parasol Label Group presents: The inaugural release for our brand new classical imprint, Arietta Music, nice to have Beethoven on board! The story goes: Back in the early 19th century this Diabelli dude wrote this waltz and passed it around to a bunch of his composer peers, much like sending a dance song around to remix artists today. Well, while many contributed (including Franz Schubert and Franz Liszt) Beethoven found it distasteful, and said so. Yet, apparently Beethoven overcame his dislike and became monumentally obsessed with Diabelli’s simple progression and eventually created 33 variations upin that theme, which are collected here, performed on piano by Professor William Kinderman. This beautiful two disc collection includes the full studio recording of the Diabelli Variations (as heard in the play '33 Variations') performed by William Kinderman and a 45 minute lecture about the variations by Kinderman (with live excerpts from a performance of the Diabelli Variations in Bakersfield, California, 2002). Two CDs housed in a beautiful full-color gatefold digipak, includes a 24 page booklet with liner notes by William Kinderman, playwright/director Moisés Kaufman, and Arietta/Parasol boss Geoffrey Merritt. Check out The Arietta Music page for more details, track samples, liner notes, etc.

Norma "1" CD5 $7.00 (Novoton)
I'm a fan of the EP format to begin with and this debut from shoegazing Swedish trio Norma just cements my fanaticism! Parlaying a monumental brand of tripped-out hypno-electro-rock majesty driven my motorik beats Norma creates gloomy, zoomy, post-rock symphonies comparable in their epic scope, dynamics, and cosmic bombast to fellow Scandinavians Eskju Divine, Serena Maneesh, The Lionheart Brothers and Moonbabies. Invoking the corporeal spirits of klassic krautrock, Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, M83, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, etc. Norma is a great new band and Novoton (Black Belt, Antennas, Existensminimum) continue to impress! Sound samples on the Parasol front page and check out Jim's Pick page for the best new Nordic music.

A Place To Bury Strangers
S-T
PS, US A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called "the loudest band in New York". This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called "loud" rock and roll that's out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they've accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that's clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out. They are songs about longing, heartbreak and confusion played extremely well and at a passionately loud volume. While there are obvious reference points: Pornography-era Cure, early Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and pre-1990s Jesus and Mary Chain, the sound is all their own, in part due to singer/guitarist Oliver Ackermann's day job of building custom guitar pedals (see deathbyaudio.net). Coupled with the solid bass of Jono Mofo and the relentless drumming of Jay Space, the APTBS team is a force to reckon with.

Architecture In Helsinki
Places Like This
PS, US Architecture in Helsinki is a six piece outfit of musical chameleons, formed in Melbourne, Australia, and now scattered across the globe. The band has developed a reputation for sensational live shows and a large, loyal fanbase. With two very successful albums already under their belt (2004's Fingers Crossedand 2005's In Case We Die), Architecture in Helsinki now hit the ground running with their third album, Places Like This. Upon first listen, it's no wonder that blogs and music sites are already chattering away insistently about the record. Places Like Thisis ten songs of instantly lovable pop brilliance, fizzing with electrical currents, channeling calypso rhythms and tropicalia flavors with lashings of percussion a-go-go. The album packs a kaleidoscopic punch that isn't far from astounding. Pop effervescence hasn't sounded this fresh in ages.

Beatles, The
1967-1970
PS, US Picking up where 1962-1966 left off, the double-album compilation 1967-1970, commonly called The Blue Album, covers the Beatles' later records, from Sgt. Pepper through Let It Be. Like The Red Album, The Blue Album contains a mixture of hits, including singles like "Lady Madonna," "Hey Jude," and "Revolution" that were never included on an LP, plus important album tracks like "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "A Day in the Life," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and "Come Together." Like its predecessor, 1967-1970 misses several great songs, but the compilation nevertheless does capture the essence of the Beatles' later recordings. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Beatles, The
1962-1966
PS, US Assembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task, not only because they had an enormous number of hits, but also because singles didn't tell the full story; many of their album tracks were as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966, commonly called The Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting most of the group's major early hits and adding important album tracks like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," and "In My Life." Naturally, there are many great songs missing from the 26-track 1962-1966, and perhaps it would have made more sense to include the Revolver cuts on its companion volume, 1967-1970, yet The Red Album captures the essence of the Beatles' pre-Sgt. Pepper records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Butterflies of Love

Famous Problems
PS, UK ALL MUSIC GUDE: "Any band that would name themselves The Butterflies of Love (a French euphemism for pubic crabs) probably has a higher level of cynicism than the average Joe, and the third album from the Connecticut-based group, Famous Problems, would tend to confirm this; this is dark, faintly garage-influenced indie rock...with an extra helping of fuzzed-out guitars and cheap organ up front...while no one is about to accuse these guys of being Party Gods, they sure know how to write a song and make a record, and Famous Problems connects solidly after a few spins. Leaders Jeff Greene and David Greene bring strong, emotionally expressive melodies to these tunes, and their vocals communicate a dozen shades of angst without edging into self-pity or narcissism, documenting busted lives in the less fashionable environs of the East Coast with journalistic accuracy and a poet's balance of sorrow and compassion. The Greene's band mates back them up with simple but forceful rock and roll that brings forth both the beauty and the sorrow of their psych-tinged folk rock with maximum emotional impact."

Carta
The Glass Bottom Boat
PS, UK The fruits of a lengthy process involving an ever-changing line-up featuring a revolving door of San Francisco musicians, this is the long-awaited debut from Carta, now with settled personnel surrounding core member Kyle Monday. Engineered by Beulah's Eli Crews and featuring Sacha Galvagna and Jared Matt Greenberg (Charles Atlas) and Alexander Kort (Subtle) amongst others, 'The Glass Bottom Boat' is a remarkably accomplished album, as one might expect considering the pedigree of those involved. Having found a home on eclectic UK label Resonant, Carta's audience should be broad and widespread, with their overall sound avoiding pigeonholes. The album is mostly instrumental, predominantly downtempo but with constant emphasis on melody. The title track features full vocals from Sarah Bell, and sounds like the best thing Espers have ever recorded. Packaged in lavish six-panel digipak. Early review from US site www.thesilentballet.com: 'It's rare that we see an album that is so grounded in reality, yet simultaneously this is immaculately breathtaking.'

Epic 45
May Your Heart Be The Map
PS, UK It comes as no surprise to find that Epic45 grew up - and still reside - in a small rural village in the heartland of the English Midlands. Based around the nucleus of 25 year old school friends Ben Holton and Rob Glover, Epic45 have had a varied and fluid line-up since their debut in 1999, releasing a series of highly acclaimed EPs and albums for labels such as Bearos, Awkward Silence and Where Are My Records. Inspired by their surroundings, blissful childhood summers and mysterious / inspiring walks the duo have been making music for more than a decade. Their latest album May Your Heart be the Map' sees Epic45 concentrating on a more bucolic sound, mixing cyclical acoustic guitars, chiming reverbs and field recordings. The album was originally inspired by 1970s British TV series 'Survivors', a fictional account of a plague that wipes out most of the worlds population. The idea of a near-deserted world in which people have to rebuild their lives amid the ruins of the previous civilization seemed strangely appealing. However, other themes crept in slowly, the 'empty world' began to represent our lives now and inevitably the duo started looking back to childhood and simpler, happier times. The title is simply a rallying call to like minded people, an expression of hope in an uncertain world. As with previous releases, May Your Heart Be The Map features a collaboration with Antony Harding of July Skies/Avrocar. This time, Harding contributes fragile vocals to the track 'We Left Our Homes For Winter'. Whilst very unique in style and approach, the music and ethos of this album may recall the youthfulness of Leeds band Hood, the experimentalism of that great lost pop band from the 1990's Disco Inferno, and is likely to delight fans of the experimental label Type and their artists Helios, Xela and Goldmund. But no doubt admirers of other classic British bands such as New Order, The Durutti Column, Felt and The House of Love will also find much to immerse themselves in and start working their way through Epic 45's enigmatic back catalogue.

Flaming Lips
U.F.O's At The Zoo - The Legendary Concert In Oklahoma City [MVI album]
PS, US PITCHFORK: "The Flaming Lips' first live document features a gigantic UFO, an army of fans in alien and Santa costumes, streamers, strobes, smoke machines, balloons, and massive amounts of confetti-- and that's just the first song. Most bands build up to this sort of explosive spectacle, but for the Lips, it's a starting point. Their shows are as much about spectacle as they are about music, which explains the hybrid technology on UFOs at the Zoo: The Legendary Concert in Oklahoma City. This document, which is neither simply an album nor simply a concert film, is being issued as an MVI album, which means it plays on DVD players but not CD players, and contains bonus digital material." What Is MVI? With a higher storage capacity than a standard CD, the Music Video Interactive Disc (MVI) contains new interactive features including, superior sound quality, a wide range of video features, and interactive digital content. MVI discs play in all standard DVD players, computers, and game consoles with DVD drives but do not play in conventional CD players. Digital music files are compatible with all MP3 devices.

Glaxo Babies
The Porlock Factor
PS, UK Glaxo Babies were born out of the thriving Bristol punk scene in 1977. They enjoyed indie chart success with the 12" EP 'This Is Your Life' in 1979 and notoriety when its follow up 'Christine Keeler' was banned by Radio One. John Peel, who offered them sessions and gigs with his legendary road show, championed the Glaxo Babies. Sadly though, the band was always too recalcitrant, headstrong and idealistic for their own good and imploded acrimoniously after barely 18 months together. With a sense of unfinished business, the nucleus of the original band (Rob Chapman - vocals, Dan Catsis - guitar, Charlie Llewellin - drums) reformed in 1985. Here are the results, inventive and melodic psychedelic pop and warped funk that somehow sounds fresher now than it did in the 1980's.

Gnac
The Arrival of the Fog
PS, UK The fifth (brand new) studio album from GNAC, the sophisticated instrumental project from Mark Tranmer. (The name is pronounced knee-ak, as in the last syllable of cognac.) The Arrival of the Fog follows acclaimed predecessors Sevens (1999), Biscuit Barrel Fashion (2001) and Twelve Sidelong Glances (2006). Biscuit Barrel Fashion was released on the Poptones label, and declared album of the month by Russian Playboy magazine. Twelve Sidelong Glances was variously praised by the international press as "brilliantly melodic" and "a collection of pop vignettes of overwhelming beauty that draw on minimalism, nouvelle vague soundtracks and intimate and ethereal English pop. Intensely romantic and lighter than air." The recently reissued Sevens was given 4/5 stars by Uncut magazine. The Arrival of the Fog centers on ten new instrumental pieces recorded in Tokyo , Osaka , Wollongong and Hebden Bridge between October 2006 and May 2007. The moods vary from Barry to Roubaix , Reilly to Delerue. Standout tracks include the opening title track, Nautical Episodes and What To Make of Jagged Graphs. The 70-minute CD also includes two extended bonus tracks, Bright Days In Winter and Winter Blanket. Mark Tranmer is currently writing soundtrack music, working on an album for female vocalists, and playing selected GNAC live shows. He also writes the music for The Montgolfier Brothers.

A year and a half since then, Kashiwa has proudly completed his 2nd full album to further introduce his talents to the world. The album titled "program music I" is compiled of 2 songs lasting 36 minutes and 27 minutes each. In the last album, Kashiwa turned his inner images into sound. This time, he chose 2 stories as a motif and ventured to express that story through sound. This is not simply a soundtrack that showcases a story but the story itself is told through music. The first song "stella" tells the story of the "Night on the Milky Way Railroad" and the second song "write once, run melos" is based on the story, "Run Melos!" The all too transparent scenery of "Night on the Milky Way Railroad" is characterized by a magical cosmic view engraved by deep thought. "Run Melos!" portrays speed and the wavering spirit of the characters. This album dynamically portrays these story characteristics through lyrical melody and ingenious arrangement. This is a stunning masterwork that speaks of musician Kashiwa Daisuke's rich creativity and his passion for creation and proudly exploits the possibilities of musical expression.

PS, US New album. Down Below It's Chaos is Kinski's 3rd full-length for Sub Pop. With the notable inclusion of 3 songs with subdued yet urgent vocals courtesy of Chris Martin, the new record is a kaleidoscopic mix of Kinski's expansive, over-driven power and intricate beauty. Ladybirds
Regional Community Theater
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: " Ladybirds is the brainchild of Gym Class Heroes keyboardist Tyler Pursel and singer Teeter Sperber, bolstered by a quartet of guesting vocalists. If cupcakes made music, it would probably sound like Regional Community Theater, fluffy and airy with plenty of sugary icing on top, this is toy town electro-pop, the music a bubbling mix between a kiddie keyboard and a teen's Nintendo, with a bowl of popcorn covered with a whole lot of cheese thrown in for good measure... Cultural pop references, wry twisting of everyday colloquialisms, the turning inside out of common words and phrases, like the best cartoons, the Ladybirds work on two levels, enchanting the kids whilst simultaneously capturing the imagination of adults. Awash in poppy classics, this regional community theater is obviously ready for Broadway."

PS, US 1st time available on vinyl! 180 gram audiophile quality virgin vinyl. Coming on the heels of his 6 year stint in the indie rock/folk trio Rodriguez, M. Ward crafted these tunes on his travels between San Luis, Chicago & finally Portland. The guitars are subtle yet precise, hinting at the virtuosity that would rear its head on future releases & collaborations. MC5
The Bing Bang! Best Of The MC5
PS, US The Motor City Five-better known as The MC5-formed in Lincoln Park, Michigan in 1964. Using a deafening sonic assault and their status as the White Panther Party's official band, they delivered messages as furious as their music, voicing the movement's "total assault on the culture" and manager John Sinclair's radical politics. With their fellow Detroit-area cohorts the Stooges, they also laid the foundation for punk and punk-metal, influencing rock ‘n roll with unprecedented force and velocity. Powered by members including legendary guitarists Fred "Sonic" Smith and Wayne Kramer and vocalist Rob Tyner, the Five released three original albums: Kick Out The Jams, Back In The U.S.A., and High Times. All three are sampled from on this career-spanning 21-track single disc collection, which also includes three rare early singles and a '72 live take on "Thunder Express."

The Mendoza Line's double-disc 30 Year Low is definitely the latter. It documents the dissolution of main members Tim Bracy's and Shannon McArdle's romantic and working relationship. The first album documents that very personal breakup. The second is a covers and rarities collection that features the Mendoza Line's takes on Cole Porter's "Anything Goes," Bob Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," and Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher Than the Rest," among others. Stripped back to just a 2-piece,this is a fantastically focused record -a taut, raw document of 2 incredible musicians in deep dialogue, exploring the boundaries of songform to find a rare & striking complement. PITCHFORK: "White and Nastasia recorded You Follow Me with stilts fetishist Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, and developed their compositions with help from Nastasia's partner Kennan Gudjonsson. In general, Carl Newman's songwriting is slightly more scrutable this time around; his lyrics still ring with wry perception and political metaphor, but they betray some of the magnanimity that comes with new love. Norma
Norma 1 EP
PS, SWEDEN Four song CDEP in handmade carton jackets, limited to 500 numbered copies. Highly recommended. Norma are very serious about ther music. Despite that they never get boring or theorizing. Their music is warm and welcoming. Norma is as much a band as a concept containing both visual and musical experiences. Their goal is to look outside the classical band format and try to broaden the cooperation with all sorts of creative minds. Their music is influenced by a lot of genres, ambient, kraut, noise, electronica, indie and the biggest influence is landscapes in all forms. Their ambition is to capture the minimalistic sound of just being three but also to challenge it and despite that sound grand. Playing live they try to give the audience much more than just a musical experience, using video, atmospheric sounds, theatrical elements and a balance between lightness and darkness. EARDRUMS MUSIC: ""I was blown away when I first heard this track from the swedish trio Norma's debut ep, out on Novoton now. Their music is a mixture of ambient, kraut, noise, electronica, indie with a strict, repetitive bass/drum pattern and a magnificent, wide and almost hypnotic sound. This is rich, panoramic music with a warmth that I don't hear often from other bands trying to do something in this genre. I'm also amazed by the composition and the small details that suddenly surfaces and surprises. When the main song on the single is 8:33 minutes long, I guess those surprises are kind of necessary..."

Now You Are This
PS, US There isn't an easy comparison for the dire, wounded poise of this album, a secret pact between beauty & fear. The songs are pensive & worry-stained, all minimal, bluntly entrancing riffs, insistent drumming & tense, reverberant synthesizers. Piana
Eternal Castle
PS, JAPAN Piana, whose vocals can be described as adoring and transient, has already established her name in the ambient music scene worldwide Artists like The Album Leaf requested her to open for their Japan tour, and video director, Thomas Hilland, the creator of Norwegian electro-duo Royksopp's promotional video, was so in love with Piana that he created her promotional video for free. From compositions to lyrics, and arrangements to mixing, the "electronica diva" Piana directs and controls her creativity, and with this new album she ventured into a new world of collaboration with musicians she loves and trusts. The digital sound and effect-heavy-feel is kept to bare minimum, and she has emphasized acoustic tones of cello, violin, guitar, piano, and organ with her new experiment. Her innocent and motherly voice became even more powerful and dearly, and the poppy melody she creates is so timeless. This new album shows her warmth and her hope for her future, and her strength to jump out of this world and resonate the bells of eternity.

Project Jenny, Project Jan
XOXOXOXOXO
PS, US Even as our hyper-digital age makes the world smaller, the soundscape of American music keeps getting bigger. Genres multiply, divide, revive, and recycle themselves-reinvented as pre-this, post-that, or this-core, and that-hop. So slap a label on Project Jenny, Project Jan if you want but you'll find that label is constantly changing. On XOXOXOXOXO, you'll witness how a young duo from Brooklyn pushes the boundaries of modern music. The band's signature sound-Sammy Rubin's jaunty electro-pop hooks fueled by saucy freestyled vocals from Jeremy Haines-is infectious without being predictable. And on this album, you will hear shades of every genre, from Latin, old school hip-hop, and reggae, to blues, rock, old time rags, and 80s electro. Some songs even brush up charmingly against bluegrass, big band, and swing, resulting in a sound that is fiercely, uniquely their own. So can you call Project Jenny, Project Jan post-indie-pop electro-core? Sure, if you insist on categorizing. The bottom line is that this is smart, energetic dance music for a new generation of listeners-the kind of people who'd rather shake it on the dance floor than puzzle over sub-genres.

PS, US New EP from Matt Sharp (ex-Weezer) and Rachel Haden (ex-That Dog!), seminal neo-new wave pioneers, The Rentals return revamped with an equally exhilarating sound for a new decade. New album in 2008. PREFIX MAG: "Okay, so it's only four songs. But The Last Little Life EP is only one small sign that the Rentals are back in a big way. The band recently finished up a residency at L.A.'s famed Spaceland. Now it's in the middle of an extensive tour on which the members will remind audiences of their band's power-pop greatness. And don't worry too much about the length-it's but a stopgap before a full LP, which Matt Sharp and his friends of P hope to have out by the end of the year."

Rilo Kiley
Under the Blacklight (ON SALE)
PS, US Rilo Kiley's most recent album, 2004's More Adventurous, prompted Elvis Costello to praise the best lyric writing that I've heard in many a day, Coldplay to invite the band on its 2005 arena tour and a plethora of critics to vote the disc onto annual best of lists. That album sold 175,000 while Jenny Lewis' solo record, 2006's Rabbit Fur Coat, sold 100,000. Now the gloriously decadent Under The Blacklight, the group's fourth album but first for Warner Bros., focuses even more intensely on what one critic has called lead singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis' tangle of indie pop, torch song and too-cool-for-school cynicism. With Under The Blacklight, Rilo Kiley is ready to shine.

Some folks have compared Satisfaction with current acts such as Spoon, The Shins, Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket. However, here's what Arty Fufkin from Polymer Records has to say..."Satisfaction reminds me of the day I was listening to the White Album while drinking Coca-Cola and eating Pop Rocks candy. Speal, Shane
Stealing the Fire
PS, US It could be a modern incarnation of the old blues scenario: A man sits in his single-wide mobile home with a primitive guitar & belts out mean murder ballads & dark spirituals through a rusty harmonica mic. But it's not a "scenario." This is the real shit. Speal was living in the middle of a Pennsylvania trailer park. He plays a cigar box guitar. And he recorded this album on a simple 4-track cassette recorder. "Stealing the Fire" features stark homemade recordings of Speal performing the works of Timothy Renner on a primitive cigar box guitar. It was a simple premis in the beginning. Speal just wanted to know what Renner's dark folk music would sound like if were soaked in Delta blues. Speal covers Renner's work from Stone Breath, Spectral Light & Moonshine Firefly Jamboree & solo recordings.

Woolson, Raymond Scott
The View From The Boggins Heights
PS, US The View From Boggins Heights is the most recent CD release by reclusive DIY recording artist Raymond Scott Woolson. Ethereal, atmospheric and uplifting, this 58 minute, 9 track album of glorious guitar-driven instrumentals soars effortlessly into the higher, brighter reaches of the shoegaze / dreampop universe. From the swirling grandeur of "Bringing Margot The Sun" to the delicate beauty of "Dear Wanda", this is perfect mood music for skyrockets and chronic daydreamers. First available in 2005 as a limited edition CD-R, and out of print since early 2006, The View From Boggins Heights has been remixed and slightly revised for its appearance as a proper CD. "...Woolson has released his strongest and most aesthetically pleasing work....a steady cohesive flow of washed out beauty....Woolsons guitars shimmer and explode while his keyboards dance over long jams of haunting drones....a beautiful treatment into the possibilities of the instrumental dream-ambient world....Woolson is able to share his heart, vision, and emotions through his well-written ambient compositions...." --SOMEWHERECOLD

You Say Party! We Say Die!
Lose All Time
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Providing more of the same as their debut album in the best possible sense, Lose All Time cements British Columbia's You Say Party! We Say Die! as one of the most consistently enjoyable acts of the neo-new wave, even despite their terrible name. With their combination of Becky Ninkovic's yowling, bratty lead vocals and Krista Loewen's unapologetically cheesy keyboards, the majority of Lose All Time passes by in a blur of thumping dance-rock tunes highly indebted to the twin towers of the Athens, GA, new wave set, Pylon and the B-52's. However, the haunting piano-and-voice ballad "You're Almost There" provides an effective breather amidst all the nervy dancefloor fillers, and the closing "Quiet World" has a hypnotic pulse akin to the best work of the often underrated Martha & the Muffins. A more consistent and thoughtful release than 2006's Hit the Floor!, which got over in part because of the band's infectious sense of fun and enthusiasm, Lose All Time is a genuinely terrific album showing that You Say Party! We Say Die! may be one of the few bands in the retro-new wave scene with the talent to last beyond their pop cultural moment." (Stewart Mason)

Zucchini Drive
Goodyear Television Playhouse
PS, JAPAN Zucchini Drive are an eclectic electric vocal duo. What started out as a side project developed quickly into a full-time occupation. Marcus Graap (Stacs of stamina) and Tom De Geeter (Cavemen speak) both kept their influences, being the acoustic lo-fi sound of Cavemen Speak on the one hand and the electronica bounce rhythms of Stacs of stamina on the other. For this album Tom & Marcus could count on an impressive list of producers and guest musicians. Styrofoam, Populous and B.fleishmann from the Morr Music Label, as well as Anticon's finest Alias. On vocals we could find the undisputed Markus Acher (the Notwist), the sharp MC-duo Grand Buffet and fast rapper Bleubird. Italian indie heroes Giardini di Miro added a warm dimension to some tracks. Zucchini Drive was always honoured to play with different artists. The collaborations were as plentiful as they were diverse, showing that Zucchini Drive do not fear to cross borders. Musical wizards as Kaeoflux (6 productions), Radical Face (2songs) or musical collaborators and friends as Mich from Hitch (be), Pol from Galatasaray (be) and last but not least Nomad (be). Goodyear Television Playhouse will sweep you of your feet and take you from hip-hop, to indie-pop and folk to rock journey you won't forget!

Acid Mothers Guru Guru
Psychedelic Navigator (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US AcidMothersGuruGuru features Mani Neumeier from the legendary and influential German Krautrock group Guru Guru as well as Kawabata Makoto and Atsushi Tsuyama from Japan's holy Acid Mothers Temple. The result is a fiery fantasy filled, loud/soft, colorful trans-generational psychedelic collaboration. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru started in a spontaneous session in March of 2006 in Nagoya, Japan. When the improvisation commenced the passionate excitement was clear to all in the room and it was then that this special psychedelic trio began. A Japanese tour was planned, an album was recorded and this recording is the fruit of this mutual musical admiration. While all involved will admit that this is a dream of collaborations it was the Acid Mothers Temple guys who were worshipping Guru Guru in their teens. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru is two generations of psychedelic rock joining forces for the 21st century.

Allen, Daevid
Good Morning! (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, UK In 1975, following his departure from GONG, the highly influential group he had founded, Daevid Allen sought musical solace in the village of Deja on the island of Mallorca. Here he encountered a group of Catalan musicians, Euterpe, with whom Allen began collaborating. Recorded in Mallorca, the album "GOOD MORNING" was released by Virgin Records in 1976 to great acclaim, being a unique work that was regarded by fans and critics as being equally as good as anything he recorded with GONG, if not better. Filled with Allen's startling original musical observations, "GOOD MORNING" appeared briefly on CD in the early 1990's and vanished quickly. Long sought after by the legions of GONG / DAEVID ALLEN followers, ESOTERIC RECORDINGS is proud to announce the reissue of this album with fully restored artwork and superb 24-bit digitally remastered sound. THE FIRST EVER OFFICIAL CD RELEASE FOR THIS CLASSIC ALBUM IN SIXTEEN YEARS.

PS, US ON DOUBLE VINYL! It describes a circle that pulls many elements together into a protected, enclosed space where they jostle & roam free: strings & mallet instruments; rock guitar & gravelly sawtooth synths; stuttering digital percussion & muscular studio drumming. What might be most striking about is the way it creates a kind of single, sustained mood; this is an album for listening to all in one go, front to back. This is one of those road-trip records, one of those coming-down records, one of those bedding-down records.

Axe Riverboy
Tutu To Tango (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Tahiti 80's frontman and principle songwriter, Xavier Boyer, one of the most distinctive and loved voices in indie rock, further propels French rock on its upward spiral with this long awaited solo record, recorded under the name Axe Riverboy, (an anagram of Xavier's name). A blend of superb songwriting, sing-a-long choruses, ringing guitars, and compressed pianos. A warm rediscovery of rock and pop with folk overtones, brilliantly drawn from the sounds upon which early Tahiti 80 thrived.

Banhart, Devendra
Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, US Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording "After The Gold Rush" and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Some songs are fragile and solipsistic, others have a pronounced tropicalia influence, and still others are wildly electric and epic.

Black Lips
Good Bad Not Evil (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US This debut succinctly epitomizes all that's special about Atlanta's favorite flower punk sons: the uncontained energy, undeniable songcraft, and unrivaled showmanship are all on full display, as is a newfound sense of the world around them. Songs like "Katrina" and "Bad Kids" spare none of the Black Lips' trademark smirk and smear, but also demonstrate a purpose and perspective not always at the forefront of the band's music. "Good Bad Not Evil" traffics in the kind of ragged rock harmony missing
from record stores for so long.

Blind Willie Johnson
Nobody's Fault But Mine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK "Blind" Willie Johnson straddled that spooky border between blues and spirituals. Among musicians, he is considered one of the greatest slide or bottleneck guitarists, as well as one of the most revered figures of depression-era gospel music. Covered by everyone from Peter, Paul and Mary to Led Zeppelin to Fairport Convention to Bob Dylan to Beck to The White Stripes, he is one of those almost secret figures who seemingly influence everything. Ry Coooder's soundtrack to "Paris, Texas" was conceived as a distillation of his work and spirit. Willie Johnson's life in itself reads like an early blues, blinded at age seven by his own mother in a fight with his errant father, living as an itinerant preacher and singer, having to live in the burnt out ruin of his ramshackle house after a fire, on a wet mattress, which eventually helped kill him, pneumonia, malarial fever and syphilis being a powerful combo. A major figure in the "eerie voiced" blues genre typified by Robert Johnson, Skip James and others, that sense-of dread hellhound on my trail atmosphere which makes great movies...Here is a collection of Blind Willie Johnson's finest, with his slashing 12 string and scary slide all over them...Blind Willie's song Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground was included on the Voyager Golden Record, sent into space with the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Out there, there may be life forms hearing the sounds of Blind Willie Johnson. Are you ready for it? A rich, strange, and wonderful collection of Blind Willie Johnson's best! Lovingly packaged with wonderful memorabilia and detailed notes by our man in the world of I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, Mr. Vic Templar! Beautifully remastered in RevOla-sonic sound by Joe Foster and Norman Blake at the secretly located Studio 3! A must for ANYONE who likes the magical, eerie and scary sound of all the people mentioned above..."adapted" by Led Zep, launched into space, covered by The White Stripes...surely you have to check out Willie's scary world of black cat bones and revelators and cold, cold graves!

Cake, The
Cream Of The Cake (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK What links New Orleans Maestro Harold Battiste, Dr. John, The Soft Machine, The Daily Flash, Tiny Tim, Jack Nitsche, Sonny and Cher, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix and Ginger Baker's Airforce? THE CAKE. The last of the classic girl groups, whose two 1967/68 albums are as they say a game of two (sometimes three!) halves, classic girlgroupisms mixed with Baroque Pop, Wyrd Folk, Psychpop and club R&B, all with a wonderful good humour. Fans of the esoteric might care to know that Kevin Ayers' song "Eleanor's Cake Which Ate Her" is about the group...that they sang backing vocals on Electric Ladyland and the first Soft Machine album...and that Eleanor herself sang 'I Got You Babe' with Tiny Tim (backed by The Band) in the cult movie "You Are What You Eat". And are the albums any good? Yes, by yiminy, they are! A wonderful snapshot of the Sunset Strip, with a wonderfully decadent atmosphere for three such innocent girls...you'll just love it! The Cake recently reformed to play the prestigious launch party for the forthcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic, and who knows - they may come to your town soon... At great personal cost, RevOla presents THE CAKE! Never previously on CD cult artists...and they look hot in pictures too! Wonderfully re-mastered by Mr. Nick Robbins and with gorgeous packaging featuring wonderful pictures provided by THE CAKE and legendary rock photographer Ed Caraeff (The Cake took the shy young Ed to Monterey, where he took his first famous photos of Jimi Hendrix). There's also more than extensive liner notes by Tiny Tim biographer Chris Campion...at last, the full story can be told! Interviews with Harold Battiste, Kim Fowley, Rodney Bingenheimer, Kevin Ayers, you name them, they are here! A must for all girl group and Northern Soul fans, lovers of Baroque Pop, Psychpop and Wyrd Folk...you know the drill!

Katapult (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Finland's Circle are one of the leading psych-rock bands playing today, releasing records and touring for over a decade now. Founding member Jussi Lehtisalo handles the majority of vocal duties with a gruff, low-end growl. The music is heavy and atmospheric with repetitive riffs and haunted keyboards which create a twisted, spooky mood. Influenced by equal parts 60s psychedelia and venom, "Katapult" is perhaps the most diverse, groundbreaking, dark, and primitive Circle album yet.

the long lost art of disposability, steering away from the culture of celebratory fake aggression, into a new era of raw, incendiary punk music.
