Burning Star Core
Very Heart Of The World
PS, US "On The Very Heart of the World", BURNING STAR CORE (BXC) has created an incredibly heavy record, built on dense, layered drones, pulses, splintered vocals, and deep rhythms that euphorically build to total overload. With a lineup including the HAIR POLICE front line and other luminaries from across the exploding Midwestern psych/noise/folk underground, BXC's C. SPENCER YEH has assembled a group that seamlessly shifts through epic movements and pushes pure electronic/concrete/physical/rock energy to undeniable, massive sound. Expanding on what was hinted at on the collaboration LP with Comets on Fire earlier this year, The Very Heart of the World is a definitive statement of the evolving Burning Star Core sound."

Crisis
Holocaust Hymns
PS, US A reissue of the late 1970s post-punk project featuring DOUGLAS P. (DEATH IN JUNE), TONY WAKEFORD (SOL INVICTUS), LUKE RENDALL (THEATER OF HATE), and LESTER JONES (SEX GANG CHILDREN). Twenty-three tracks that take the youthful, raw energy of punk and lock it down with restrained lyrical phrasing and strict rhythms, resulting in a somewhat harsh poeticism of violent urgency not unlike Warsaw or Gang Of Four. Taken from the band's first three 7-inches, their Hymns of Faith mini-LP, some demo recordings, and assorted live tapes. All tracks recorded between 1978 and 1980.

Missle Sunset
PS, US They bring something different to the table with each of the 11 tracks on this album; & its hard to do that & actually end up with a record thats good! They prove its not impossible. Taking cues from other musical pioneers like the Screamers, Gang of Four, Urinals & the Electric Eels; they forge into their own fragmented, audience-less sector & begin to build a following based on songs that are undeniably catchy without sticking to a musical script.

El Perro Del Mar
Lookl! It's El Perro Del Mar!
PS, SWEDEN El Perro del Mar was founded in December 2003 in Gothenburg by the sole member of El Perro Del Mar, Sarah. In November 2004 El Perro Del Mar released the three-track ep "What's New? El perro del mar" which included the songs 'This Loneliness, 'It's all good' and 'I can't talk about it'. She also worked together with Swedish Jens Lekman and together they released a split vinyl single on which Sarah contributed the song 'Shake it off'. The single was available in Sweden and in the U.S via Jens' label Secretly Canadian - but it was quickly sold out. El Perro Del Mar also went on a short tour in Sweden accompanying Jens around this time. In Spring 2005 a compilation of all the earlier released tracks, 'Look it's El Perro Del Mar', was released, once again for Hybris. Sounds like The Concretes in bedroom-recording mode, Jens Lekman's lofi orchestrations, Phil Spector girlgroup wall-of-sound 60s pop...

Lubelski, Samara
Spectacular of Passages
PS, US "There is certainly nothing wrong with chanteuses - we are quite lucky to now have a fair few in our aural midst as some of the young'uns seem to take off - but neu-folk composer Samara Lubelski is absolutely not a chanteuse by nature. In truth to her pedigree in Metabolismus, Tower Recordings, Hall of Fame, the Sonora Pine, Pacer, Matt Valentine et al., she's a master of atmospheric textures at both juggernaut tempi and languorous sonic canvasses, her part as one of whole. Samara, with dew-flecked voice and slippery strung chords, makes that languor a tour of both honeyed breakfast plate and the midday crackle of dried grass. Third as bandleader, ten new classics of deliciously effusive songcraft, Passages joins Lubelski with The Clean's Hamish Kilgour and otherworldly luminaries Matt Heyner (NNCK), Christian Frederickson (Rachel's), and Cynthia Nelson."

Mardie, Montt
Drama
PS, SWEDEN Montt Mardié is the brilliant voice of David Pagmar from Stockholm, Sweden. "Drama" is a breathtaking collection of extremely soulful pop. Fans of Acid House Kings' latest will find much to love here, but really Montt's quite a bit sexier, like fellow Swedish act Moneybrother. Excellent music blog Swedesplease said "equal parts Duran Duran and Motown soul" but we're leaning more towards the classic sounds of Style Council and The Colourfield, and even, occasionally, some of George Michael's biggest hits. Yes, even Wham! at times. With a hint a camp Montt Mardie is one of Sweden's brightest new pop hopes.

Mass
Labour Of Love
PS, US Labour Of Love by Mass finally gets a CD release by 4AD. Both this and the Wolfgang Press CD's are the last two 4AD albums to make it onto CD, from our extensive backcatalogue. They are Mail Order only, although there will be limited stock available in stores in the US. Mass : Labour of Love Possibly the real legacy of Punk ('76 version) is the impression it made on other beginner musicians of no fixed talent but great imagination. Possibly it made them braver. Certainly the post facist-3-chord-wonders landscape was a fertile ground for experimentation.

Monott, Sugar
The Roots Lover: 1978-1983 (2 x CD
PS, The Roots Lover 1978 - 1983 is the first collection of Sugar Minott's best maxi-singles with extended versions (plus two additional intros). Lincoln "Sugar" Minott played a major role in the story of Jamaican music as a singer, songwriter, producer, label man and sound system instigator. His singing voice was as sweet as honey (hence the nickname) and graced both roots and lover's rock compositions in equal measure. Born Lincoln Barrington Minott in 1956 in West Kingston, Jamaica, his career actually began as part of the vocal trio African Brothers in 1970. After departing with the group in 1976, Sugar signed a solo contract with Studio One, and Sugar set about writing his own lyrics over the classic riddims of Jamaica's most famous label, as well as penning his own songs. Sugar's way of working on covers laid down the foundations for the later coming dancehall movement, and his debut album Live Loving can lay claim to being the very first dancehall album, with Roots Radics or
the Revolutionaries, top class musicians in their own right, accompanying Sugar on many of his songs. His uniquely sweet, almost hushed vocal style became his trademark. Bob Marley loved it and declared Sugar to be one of his favourite singers in Jamaica. Three albums (Live Loving, Showcase, More Sugar) and a number of singles later, he set up his own Black Roots Production and Youth Promotion Company labels in 1978, along with the Youth Promotion Soundsystem, which was a springboard for ghetto kids to get to work in the studio. In 1980 he moved to London, where the UK was under the spell of lover's rock, which Minott took full advantage of whilst masking the fact that he was equally at home in Jamaican roots. Sugar would later go back to his roots in Jamaica scoring a hit with the ganja hymn "Herbsman Hustling" - one of the founding elements of rootical dancehall. In 1988 he turned increasingly political and his African Soldier album (1988) is dedicated to the freedom fighters i
n South Africa opposing Apartheid. Throughout much of the rest of his career, he drew attention to Africa's rich history, its culture and perception of Ethiopia as the promised land of Zion. Venturing away from conventional reggae into crossover territory in the '90s, he started to address themes of love and cultural awareness, showing himself to be a singer who moved easily between the poles of roots reality and the poetry of love. Here is the ultimate roots reggae collection, chock full of unearthed extended versions to round off a portrait of Sugar Minott which confirms him as the greatest Jamaican protagonist of roots and lover's rock, captured at the most important moments of his musical story.

Jukeboxseries 100-09
PS, US Nobody is the 27-year old somebody named Elvin Estela, an LA vinyl junkie hypnotized by analog waves and creates albums mirroring phases of his stereo obsessions. His first two albums on Ubiquity Records were a hip-hop/cosmic jazz statement springing from early studio days & back alley freestyle sessions. Estela is also part of SAVATH & SAVALAS (PREFUSE 73). Paddington DC
The Sun is Down and the Sky is Grey
PS, SWEDEN New full-length effort from Paddington Distortion Combo, led Bear Quartet keyboardist Calle Olsson. Like The Bear Quartet's latest synth opus, "Saturday Night", Calle's caffeinated vintage keyboard orchestrations are equal parts Wreckless Eric-era pop-minimalism, soulful Sarah Records indie-gush maximalism, and a Tubeway Army-issue antidote for both... Notwithstanding the opening Krautpop salvo, an 18-minute bit of synth-epicry, the balance of the songs on this record are relatively short and sweet, especially album closer "Something To Say". Special CDR pressing in a nifty full-color poster sleeve. REVIEW: "Which leads me finally to Paddington DC, and the wonderfully titled "I Am Having A Sad Evening" track from their The Sun Is Down And The Sky Is Grey set on Lowlife. I first became aware of this band when a copy of their eight minute 'Little Variations' landed in my lap all the way back in April of 2003. Then a year later the monumental 18 minute 'Put Things' appeare
d in my post box, and I swear I couldn't shift that from the stereo for ages. Like some wayward sibling of Flowered Up's classic 'Weekender', 'Put Things' in fact opens this set, but it's this nearly eight minute gem that has most captured my imagination this time. Largely instrumental, but punctuated with a breath of disembodied vocals that sound as though they are being buried alive, this is hypnotic, mesmerising, and eerily reminiscent of The Wake at their most pared back and fragile. Utterly compelling and haunting." (Tangents UK)

Painting Petals On Plant Ghost
Self-Titled
PS, IT Debut recording from Italy's OPALIO brothers (MY CAT IS AN ALIEN) and RAMONA PONZINI. An esoteric and mesmerizing trip through space, minimalism, and emotion. Each track recorded at a different mystical location in the Western Alps, and centered around Ramona's beautiful vocals, all of which are sung in traditional Japanese. MAURIZIO and ROBERTO add sparse accompaniment by means of toy piano, alien keyboard tones, antique accordion, percussion, tape effects, and some particularly evocative acoustic guitar. The whole thing comes off alternately as deeply meditative or chillingly haunted, depending on your attention and mood. Silence, space and ritual are hugely important here, with notes and words hovering frozen in time. While the My Cat Is An Alien moniker might leave some folks scratching their heads, here PAINTING PETALS ON PLANT GHOST nail it. Fragile, beautiful, cosmically isolationist, and totally spooked. Pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl, and lushly packaged with let
terpress printed cover & insert. Printed with copper ink on exquisite & massively thick handmade ivory art paper, each sheet cast one at a time & air dried. Hand numbered edition of 560 copies.

Picks & Lighters
Self-Titled
PS, US Picks and Lighters existed in a bubble in the late 90's in Knoxville. The released an LP and a few CD, CDR's and tapes to little or no attention, until a magical box arrived at BullTongue headquarters. All the tonguers were blown away by the Royal Trux like bleed produced by P&L and we jumped at the chance to reissue this monster for wider consumption. Around 70 minutes long and plays like about 10, seemlessly switching and turning sometimes I wonder just what I put on. The chance to hear this, put it out and be involved has been one of the highlights of a seriously massive year. Andrew MacGregor '05.

Rema Rema
Wheel In The Roses (DELAYED)
PS, US 25 years after this record launched 4AD as a label under Ivo's exclusive guidance, REMA-REMA's 'Wheel In The Roses' is being re-issued in a strictly limited edition of 1000 CD's. While the early Axis label singles had served an important research and development function, the arrival of Rema-Rema provided Ivo with something more important: a reason for continuing. Returning to the shop one afternoon to find five people about to play Peter their demo tape, Ivo was immediately struck by the post-punk quintet's music, later saying, "It was the first point I knew that we were actually doing something serious." The band consisted of Gary Asquith (guitar/vocals), Marco Pirroni (guitar), Mick Allen (bass/vocals), Mark Cox (keyboards) and Max (drums). Their sole EP, Wheel In The Roses, featured one side of studio recordings and another of live material. Their songs "Fond Affections" and "Rema-Rema" were later covered by This Mortal Coil and Big Black respectively. Rema-Rema split u
p shortly after the EP's release in April 1980. Pirroni later hit the big time with Adam And The Ants. Asquith, Allen and Cox formed the short-lived Mass with Danny Briottet. Asquith then moved on to Renegade Soundwave, while Cox and Allen stayed with 4AD as part of The Wolfgang Press.

This Heat
Self-Titled
PS, US CD version has been out of print for 14 years. Re-mastered & repackaged. Known as the most left field, & at the same time most hard edged, band in all of England, their concerts attracted Experimental, Punk & New Wave audiences alike. Over time it has also proved itself prescient; there are musical innovations here that anticipate genres that would take another 15 years to reappear. The recordings hammeringly intense & the sound deep, radical, & rich. This was music stripped back to the bone but never simplified & it hasn't aged.

Tucker, Mark
Batstew
PS, US "America is a great country when one realizes its roadside stops offer artistic haven for all brands of perverts, bloodletters and musical cut-ups. More than mere concréte audio-collage, Batstew is both a respite from and an antidote for the sottish Reykjavik-borne revues polluting our national collegiate airwaves, and when the rare song-icons of folk-rock rise up from the maelstrom, one wants to offer both a firm handshake and a slingshot to the eye. I've followed Merce Cunningham's lead and pasted a photo of Hilary Duff on the jacket of my copy, letting the excrement seep outward at its whim. something else, again, that I suppose you can file next to your Tweddle, Trimble and Grudzien LPs. This is Tucker's first LP, the second being in the sack, a rec which goosed Jim O'Rourke into gasping, 'that's the greatest record ever made!' Batstew was pressed twice, with a stop at the mental institution in between. And with that thing passing around for not much less than 5 bones,
this reish is priced for the people. Sweet, innocent and totally wrecked DIY vibes, evoking the Desperate Bicycles, Department Store Santas, et al. Batstew may not make it into the freezer bag of bejeweled sonic artifacts for the next century, but for now, let it help eradicate realizations of what will."

Wolfgang Press
The Burden Of Mules
PS, US One of 4AD's longest serving acts, The Wolfgang Press were formed by Michael Allen (vocals, bass) and Mark Cox (keyboards) in 1983. The pair had previously played alongside future Adam And The Ants guitarist Marco Pirroni in Rema-Rema, who cut one EP for the label in 1980. They then briefly reunited in Mass, who managed a single and an album before disbanding (Mass colleagues Gary Asquith and Danny Briottet went on to form Renegade Soundwave). The Wolfgang Press' debut album, The Burden Of Mules, ploughed a similar post-punk furrow to Rema-Rema and Mass. It featured guest contributions from fellow 4AD signings Richard Thomas (Dif Juz) and David Steiner (In Camera), plus, crucially, guitarist Andrew Gray. The latter soon joined the group full-time.

Ahleuchatistas
What You Will (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US Third album from this amazing avant-technical, post-Beefheart, improv-core, math-metal, art-damage, punk-rock, power trio formed in February, 2003, Ahleuchatistas are a guitar/bass/drums trio from Asheville, NC whose music is a cutting cultural critique and a joyous musical experience. Their sound is as stripped down as it can be - they use no effects whatsoever - and they combine elements of punk rock, post-electronic, progressive rock mathrock, fusion, and minimalism. They have released two acclaimed records, but What You Will is their first release with significant distribution. They have gained a significant reputation very quickly for their powerful and precise live shows. 3 QuickTime movies of the band in concert, playable on your Mac or PC, which captures a taste of their staggering live performances! For fans of: Captain Beefheart, Don Caballero, Fantomas, Hella, Minutemen, Ruins.

Antony And The Johnsons
You Are My Sister (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS breakthrough album "I Am A Bird Now" has certainly touched fans and critics alike. His second full-length - released in February - stands as one of the most globally acclaimed albums of 2005. The album's latest single is the anthemic and heart-rending "You Are My Sister", presented as a duet between Antony and BOY GEORGE. Together these two vocalists climb to the highest peak of emotional vulnerability providing for the listener one of the most touching and uncanny duets of the past decade. It's heartbreaking when Antony sings, "You are my sister / we were born / so innocent, so full of need / there were times we were friends / but times I was so cruel / at night I'd asked for to watch me as I sleep". With soaring and world-weary intensity, Boy George utterly commands the refrain: "You are my sister / and I love you / may all of your dreams come true." In "You Are My Sister," the pair sing from the depths of their hearts for the world. This extended si
ngle also includes three new, unreleased songs recorded during the "I Am A Bird Now" sessions.

Blossom Toes
We Are Ever So Clean (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 7TH)
PS, US Think back to the 1967 London of Syd Barrett, Twink, Steve Howe, Tomorrow, Sgt. Pepper, Pete Daltrey's Kaleidescope and there you will find the Blossom Toes, a quartet led by guitarist Brian Godding and Jim Cregan and one of the best kept secrets of the '60s British psych scene. Produced by none other than Giorgio Gomelski, the Blossom Toes' debut LP, is one of the most clear and convincing pieces of British psych pop ever written. Given the overall excellence
of the work, it is impossible to single out the "best" track but "Look At Me I'm You" and "When The Alarm Clock Rings" are particularly exceptional. Do not miss this classic!

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone
Young Shields (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 25TH)
PS, US Owen Ashworth finally jettisons the confines of lo-fi minimalism for an expanded production palette. A bite sized intro to his new CFTPA made in conjunction w/ Jherek Bischoff (DEAD SCIENCE, DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE. A driving, menacing anthem with its cold synths, frantic drum machines, & pulsing bass undermined by Ashworth's signature monotone, it is a brilliantly bitter narrative that stands as the most confident & sinister track in the Casiotone songbook. The single's b-side is an electro reworking of of Prince's "When You Were Mine," which features guest vocals from XIU XIU's Caralee McElroy, & somehow manages to sound giddy and gloomy at the same time. CD also features 2 beautifully retrofitted CFTPA classics from their sold out Alphabet Series 7": "Roberta C" appears here as a huge, swooning epic with a full string arrangement and a ridiculous, floor-killing beat, and "The Subway Home" has been reworked as a darkly beautiful dirge which pairs Ashworth's raspy baritone
with Bischoff's skeletal contrabass arrangement.

Catfish Haven
Please Come Back (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US CATFISH HAVEN took its name from the rural trailer park nestled on the southern tip of Missouri where the trio's singer and main songwriter, GEORGE HUNTER, spent his early childhood. His father is a welder and, as with many trades, you must go where the work is. So the family packed up and left Catfish Haven for a Chicago suburb. It was there as a teenager that Hunter met future bandmates MIGUEL CASTILLO and RYAN FARNHAM. Their friendship was born out of a mutual love of skateboarding and music. After a few months and a move into the city, the three-piece stormed Chicago with a self-financed CD, complete with handmade beer box covers, to begin spreading the gospel of "The Haven". Word travels fast in the Windy City's music scene, and soon Catfish Haven had intrigued enough people to be invited to play alongside the likes of MY MORNING JACKET, DANIEL JOHNSTON, KINGS OF LEON and ZWAN, flooring audiences with the raw intensity of their live set. Akin to guitarists/vocalists li
ke BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and JOHN FOGERTY, Hunter, a howling crooner with gravel in his honey-sweetened voice (a la SAM COOKE), is known to strike his acoustic while stomping through each number. Castillo's pounding bass grooves are heightened when joined by Farnham's forceful, yet tasteful, drumming. Consider this: howling + pounding = smooth. An improbable equation that Catfish Haven has managed to make work. So this is it. The guys in Catfish Haven are who they are; there's no room for pretension here. They play their hearts out for anyone who will listen 'cause they've got a love for music that drives them. And every note they play is intended to recapture those magical moments back at Catfish Haven.

Comus
First Utterance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US Comus' first album contains an imaginative if elusive brand of experimental folk-rock, with a tense and sometimes distressed vibe. Although there are elements of traditional British folk music, there's an edginess to the songwriting & arrangements that would be entirely alien in a Fairport Convention or Pentangle disc. At times, this straddles the border between folk-rock and the kind of songs you'd expect to be sung at a witches' brew fest, the haunting supernatural atmosphere enhanced by bursts of what sound like a theramin-like violin, hand drums, flute, oboe, ghostly female backup vocals, and detours into almost tribal rhythms.

Connors, Loren
Sails (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US To accompany guitarist LOREN CONNORS (nee MAZZACANE) is to discover a strange and forgotten America, then venture irreversibly beyond. Connors is frequently pegged as an avant bluesman, and the blues are never far from the surface of his art -- but what a shimmering surface it is! The brevity and lyricism of his improvisations bear the mark of haiku; the floating, expressionist tones reflect the influence of MARK ROTHKO; and as he conjures keening Celtic wails, Connors offers himself as medium to the ghosts of New York City Past. With "Sails", Connors enters the third decade of such intimate explorations. In the course of these two discs, we pass through saturated phrasings, slowly undulating drones, doldrumic introspection and squalls of white noise. The penultimate highlight is a duet with Connors' aesthetic compadre, the late, great JOHN FAHEY. It's an intuitive and seemingly predestined meeting of two enlightened fellow-travelers: wily Fahey as the Dr. Livingstone of ra
w Americana to Connors' indefatigable Stanley. For his own part, Connors can evoke more clarity and purity in a short cluster of notes than most of his shred-happy contemporaries can muster in a lifetime -- and with Fahey's passing, he may be justifiably considered this country's greatest living guitarist. Ultimately, Loren Connors path, while not for the timid, is one of unspeakable treasure: a journey to the heart of brightness; a quest to penetrate a Terra Incognita of the soul.

Conrad, Tony
Fantastic Glissando (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US It's 1969, and TONY CONRAD wants to take you Higher. Celebrated for the thrilling roar of his amplified violin, Conrad is a founding father of 'minimalism' and a giant in the American soundscape. Now Conrad's own Audio ArtKive imprint presents the first in a series of releases that reveal the wild breadth of his 40-year career, including field recordings, piano compositions, film soundtracks and more. "Fantastic Glissando" (1969) is a series of (d)evolving electronic compositions created with sine-wave oscillators. The instrumentation is different, but the effect is typical Conrad: soaring, aggressively textured and jet-engine massive. This first-time CD release contains an extra ten-minute bonus track not included on the original LP version.

Coven
Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 28TH)
PS, US Coven's sound is inspired by the occult, as is immediately evident from their song titles and lyrics that speak of demons, witches and satanic rituals. This album, released in 1970, attracted many fans to the genre, in part because a track entitled "Black Sabbath" and the presence of a bassist named "Oz Osbourne" gave the band an air of mystery. However, this American band is of no relation to their British counterparts. Coven, nonetheless, bring us a high quality album, both from a musical and visual standpoint (thanks to the dramatic cover art).

BBC host and producer John Peel requested the band do a "Sessions" gig for him and they were officially on their way. Relentless touring with The Gang Of Four, Echo And The Bunnymen, B52s, The Specials, The Teardrop Explodes, and U2 put the group on the map. PS, US The fourth in Tigerbeat 6's Shotgun Wedding Series finds DROP THE LIME and SYRUP GIRLS exploring a shared love of grimy parties, fake blood fights, bootleg Vuitton, hot sauce on gold fronts, eyepatches, mastodons, and yelling in the streets. DTL's mix is a ride into the sounds that have inspired and influenced him as a producer. Using three turntables, he mixes old skool jungle classics screwed down to 33 over crunk and growling dubstep, 4x4 ghettotech over hip-hop all-star jams pitched up to 45, and Billie Holiday acapellas over swooning, melodic soundscapes. Basically, it's totally insane. SGs drop bullets on the decks and flames to the floor, making ill bootlegs, nasty 4x4 garage, Bmore club jams, favela funk and grime sound like they've always belonged together. If you don't dance to this, your booty is broken and you need to go home.

Durrett, Liz
Mezzanine, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US In contrast to Liz's previous work, her second release is a surprisingly hi-fi affair. Gone are the hissing ghosts and unsure echoes that once haunted and obscured her recordings. Her voice and guitar are the focus here, and she performs with more energy, determination, and flat out rawness than ever before. These eleven songs cover a lot of ground. Produced by Vic Chesnutt and engineered by Andy Baker (Macha, Japancakes, Glands).

East River Pipe
What Are You On? (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US This sixth release (and first new East River Pipe record since 2003's "Garbageheads On Endless Stun") is another magical, intimate album, one that continues to justify Rolling Stone's claim that F.M. Cornog is "one of our generation's great eccentric songwriters". Fans of SMOG, Mercury Rev, and My Morning Jacket should take notice of Cornog's mastery.

Elected
Sun, Sun, Sun (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US The rope-strong, luminous follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2004 debut, "Me First". Recorded while singer/songwriter Blake Sennett was on tour with his other band, Rilo Kiley, the album is propelled by the kind of unsettled, exploratory impetus that's only native to the American open road. While portions of the album were recorded in studios, Sennett recorded and produced the majority of his creations in environments he was passing through. The dichotomy between feeling completely at home and at the same time homeless on the road fuels Sennett's biting, reflective lyricism and grand, sweeping compositions.

Ester Drang
Rocinate (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US On their third full-length, Ester Drang catapult even further into their patented synth-dripped rhythms, throbbing percussion, rising horns, and post-grazer grandeur, having as much in common with Brian Eno's mournful drone as they do The Notwist's passionate textures. A beautiful ensemble of tracks that prove songs not only have the power to elevate or to infiltrate, but when properly strung together, can be as transcendent as they are moving.

Everlovely Lightningheart
Cusp (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US This collaborative is an entity capable of producing, perverting, destroying, distributing, stealing, and selling a vast and sprawling array of existing as well as unheard of forms of cultural products and concepts. Their performances range from serene to chaotic. Including anywhere from two to a dozen performers, each is a truly unique experience. They've played shows with Isis, These Arms Are Snakes, Pelican, Bastard Noise, and more. As well as playing the conventional club circuit, they've also been included as part of several museum and art collective events. They document every performance with audio, video, and photography, creating an extensive library of work. "Cusp" is beautiful in its chaos and simplicity. It is a humbling and sad composition, the sort of sadness that tunes the listener into the physical state of humanity.

Excepter
Sunbomber (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US This EP serves as a launching pad into the visionary plane of the modern-day barnstormer. Excepter is a synthetic protest band engineered to erase cultural distinctions through polarized confusion. They're damaged where Black Dice are experimental, and primitive and impulsive where Animal Collective are whimsical. This is full-fledged ambient house, maybe calypso but who's counting, unafraid of its reggae roots, too. A band to watch.

Faithfull, Marianne
Come My Way (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US In 1965 Marianne Faithful released 2 debut albums simultaneously, a self-titled pop album and an album called Come My Way comprised somewhat unexpectedly of folk tunes. While the 1st album generally reaffirmed her persona as she-devil and soulless poster child of that hedonistic generation, the latter gave listeners a fleeting glimpse of a hidden darker side, perhaps an unintentional foretelling of those black days that would soon follow. This reissue, available briefly in the UK and Japan, feat. 4 bonus tracks: her classic 1969 single "Sister Morphine," released prior to the Rolling Stones' version, the 1964 B-side "Blowin' in the Wind," "Et Maintenant," from a 1965 EP and the 1966 B-side "That's Right Baby."

Film School
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US Film School is a band with impressively eclectic influences (Pink Floyd, The Who, obscure electronica, metal, drone, alternative '80s), a grandiose collective musical history, and a healthy bout of critical acclaim. "Wonderfully off-kilter pop songs" - NME. "As their name implies, Film School creates sounds with a cinematic eye...This four-song EP is a compact 23-minute trip that proves this San Francisco quintet have serious dibs on becoming leaders if Haight-Ashbury is ever to rise again" - CMJ. Rave live reviews in the NME and The Fly followed their UK visit in September 2004, supporting TV On The Radio. The Sunday Times Culture Magazine hailed them as one of the new bands that "should be huge", and Music Week included them in their rundown of the "eleven buzz bands on the brink of greater things."
