Sinoia Caves "The Enchanter Persuaded" CD $12.75 (Jagjaguwar/Brah)
SINOIA CAVES is another name for the analog synth wizard JEREMY SCHMIDT, who is also a principal member of the critically-lauded, maximal-rock band called BLACK MOUNTAIN. "The Enchanter Persuaded" is his solo debut full-length. It is an ambient psych masterpiece, bringing to mind, as one writer puts it, "the warmth and majestic epic swales" of FLORIAN FRICKE'S POPUL VUH plus a "little RICK WAKEMAN and KRAFTWERK." "The Enchanter Persuaded" was originally self-released, in a very limited fashion, in 2002. This newest, more permanent edition comes with a slight remastering and vastly improved artwork.

PS, GERMANY 17 Pictures is a project by Jörg Follert, who has already released critically acclaimed under the pseudonyms Wechsel Garland and Wunder for labels like Morr or Karaoke Kalk. Follert lives in Cologne and has become an influential artist in the field between acoustic instrumentals, electronic collages and song-orientated pieces with vocals. Apart from album releases he wrote scores for different movies and contributed music to theatre plays. He has collaborated with musicians like World Standard, Felix Kubin, Sora, Niobe and did various remixes for projects like Calexico or Tied & Tickled Trio. On this CD he focuses more on guitar-based compositions making less use of electronic elements and vocals. This makes room for beautiful and intimate instrumentals in which the guitar is supported by rhodes, harmonica, string arrangements and a rhythm every now and then. Several songs carry a rather lonesome feeling - but they are alternated by more swinging upbeat pieces with jumping strings passages. A one-minute long theme introduced in the first track reappears in several variations throughout the CD establishing a frame for the whole album. The CD comes in a matt Digipack.

PS, UK After last years astounding 57 Octaves Below EP, Brighton's Air Formation are back with their third album. Recorded over the Summer with producer Pat Collier, mastered by Shimmydisc/Bongwater maestro Kramer Daylight Storms is their most accomplished work to date. Drawing from the likes of eighties shoegazers My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, as well as lesser known noise-dreamers like the fabulously mysterious Flying Saucer Attack, Air Formation sit comfortably alongside the current crop, Sigur Ros, Long-View, Mew et al while at the same time following a path of their very own making. PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator. Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark", was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St. Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully, Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together. Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun during college on the south side of Chicago and completed it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings four of the best songs on the album, but she also made important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music. We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.

PS, UK Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim is the biggest name in Brazilian music. His composition 'The Girl from Ipanema' with 'Yesterday' are the most popular song of all time and it is THE number that defines Bossa Nova (though Jobim wrote two dozen other songs that are intrinsic to the genre). Jobim and the virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa were (with Joao Gilberto) the architects of Bossa Nova; overseeing the transition of traditional samba song to the new form and our collection covers those years of transition. Our set includes Jobim songs played by Bonfa and vice versa. It includes vintage domestic hits written either by Jobim or by both men and as a major feature also includes the entire score of the 1956 'Orpheus of the Carnival' stage play (written by Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Morais). This was the blueprint for the famous film 'Black Orpheus' which two years later swept all before it at the Cannes Film festival and put Bossa Nova on the world map. Our set captures the flavour of fifties Brazil, when in arts and culture and sport the country was really emerging. Jobim and Bonfa are popular throughout the world. Much of the later work of both men has long attained classic status and is in print (eg Jobim's number 1 USA LP with Frank Sinatra). Both men are major names in America and Japan. Bossa Nova has been given further impetus with the re-discovery of Tropicalia and period Brazilian music is now extremely prominent, in Britain and Europe especially. Any student of Brazilian music will appreciate this album.

It made a fortune and changed the face of cinema. PS, US This limited edition lp was pressed in an edition of 500 with letterpressed covers done by Manifesto. These are completely different recordings than the Bark Haze compact disc also on Important Records. The Bark Haze is primarily a guitar duo of GOWN (nom de plume of one Andrew Macgregor) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth etfuckingcetera). Auxiliary members have been know to include Pete Nolan (Magik Markers, Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Cops et al). Their name came from a mis-hearing of the radical early 70s R+B group the Bar-Kays and from that moment the concept of mis-hearing and allegiance to presenting the mis-hearing as some open-ended musical course became The Bark Haze's identity. So far all concerts have taken place in Western Massachusetts and once in the confines of Cambridge, MA's Twisted Village record emporium. They anxiously await their debut gig in the UK at the Nightmare Before Christmas event curated by Moore. As the heroic and potentially bonkers Carpenters refrained We've Only Just Begun. Damn straight.

In addition to all 14 tracks from their 1981 album on the New Hormones label (founded by Buzzcocks), the CD also features ten bonus tracks from all four singles released between 1980 and 1982, including the cult favourites Bricks and Discordo, as well as the ultra-rare Diagram Brothers German EP. Often compared to XTC, Gang of Four and Fire Engines in their day, The Diagram Brothers invented and defined their sound 'discordo' as follows: "The music was made to a strict formula, or set of rules. All the guitar chords were based on discordant notes, all the beats were very simple rock or disco, and all the words very straightforward and down to earth." Some Marvels Of Modern Science drew warm reviews on release in 1981: "The Diagram Brothers play an extraordinary, quirky, jerky brand of speedo funk, as if some Pavlovian behaviourist has got hold of The Gang of Four and started to do tricky experiments on them... What's captured is timeless and universal, in the same way as CAT POWER'S "Moon Pix", LEONARD COHEN'S "Songs of Love And Hate", and JONI MITCHELL'S "Blue".

PS, US Inside your raincoat you find a plastic pocketwatch. It is chiming. Now is the time for the Ideal Free Distribution. The makings of the Ideal Free Distribution came together in 1997 when Eric Griffy, Tony Miller, and Craig Morris decided to make some recordings in Eric's bedroom of some of the primitive ramblings trapped in their heads. Often crude and amateurish, the songs nonetheless had a unique sound and vision that encouraged the three to keep it up. Inspired by Scott Walker, Belle and Sebastian, Beach Boys, and the more obscure elements of the psychedelic genre, they pressed on with the creative process. In a few months, the songs became respectable enough to play for others, and good enough to keep the group recording more material. As their maturity as songwriters grew, some of these new songs (about 50/50) were absolutely wonderful. However, since these new recordings were made in the boys' tiny hometown of Benton, Kentucky, they would never see any release beyond that of compilation cassettes passed around to friends and family. The advantage of this obscurity was that the band was able to learn to cull their weaker songs and focus their efforts on tunes that were worthwhile. The culmination of these developments began to appear in 2003 and 2004 as Eric, Tony, and Craig began writing material for their forthcoming single (Saturday Drive/Apples and Oranges) and LP. With a full lineup due to the addition of Joe Drury on keyboard and guitar, Mike Grote on drums, Marci Schneider on mellotron and castinets, Shelly Morris on vocals and percussion, and Samantha Herald on accessory percussion and vocals, Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo heard and loved the demos for these new songs, and his enthusiasm has spread throughout the psychedelic underground who happened to hear them. Through Robert, the band found a home in Athens, Georgia's Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records. PS, UK Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim is the biggest name in Brazilian music. His composition 'The Girl from Ipanema' with 'Yesterday' are the most popular song of all time and it is THE number that defines Bossa Nova (though Jobim wrote two dozen other songs that are intrinsic to the genre). Jobim and the virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa were (with Joao Gilberto) the architects of Bossa Nova; overseeing the transition of traditional samba song to the new form and our collection covers those years of transition. Our set includes Jobim songs played by Bonfa and vice versa. It includes vintage domestic hits written either by Jobim or by both men and as a major feature also includes the entire score of the 1956 'Orpheus of the Carnival' stage play (written by Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Morais). This was the blueprint for the famous film 'Black Orpheus' which two years later swept all before it at the Cannes Film festival and put Bossa Nova on the world map. Our set captures the flavour of fifties Brazil, when in arts and culture and sport the country was really emerging. Jobim and Bonfa are popular throughout the world. Much of the later work of both men has long attained classic status and is in print (eg Jobim's number 1 USA LP with Frank Sinatra). Both men are major names in America and Japan. PS, GERMANY Daisuke Miyatani lives on the Awaji Island in Japan and usually works in a bookshop. Maybe that is where he finds the rest and silence to create his fragile compositions. Or it is his Japanese cultural background that leads to the calm, haiku-like miniatures. Daisuke establishes a reduced and minimal approach mostly based on guitars, accompanied by xylophones and other instruments. The songs have an open character, with a lot of silence, and repetition. These elements are contrasted with more ambient-like, electronically composed material. Hence the album is a fruitful interplay between constant atmospheres and point-like acoustic notes. Most of the songs include fieldrecordings which are rather subtle, underlying. All the electronic elements still have an annalog character, fitting with the dominating acoustic instruments. "Diario" establishes a warm and calm atmosphere and yet avoiding to be a trivial album. The techniques of minimalism, repetition, integration of concrete sounds, electro-acoustic combination are all used in a very discrete way. The result is an interesting album very comfortable to listen to. He has released several works on different, mostly Japanese labels. There are definitely parallels to Yuichiro Fujimoto's work, who also releases on Ahornfelder. The CD comes in a matt Digipack with detailed collage-artwork.

PS, US Leave Me In The Black No-Thing is the new full-length album recorded April 10th, 2006, at MCIAA's Alien Zone, located in a remote region of the Western Alps, Piemonte, Italy. The work consists of two tracks entitled Part One and Part Two for a total length of 56:15 minutes. After having been irradiated by the Cosmic Light Of A New Millennium, you find yourself facing a black and white cover, where the only view of the universe is foreshortened, and represents a lighted shape showing branches of pine trees under a white sky, within the darkest black. Element which represents the esthetic detaching and, at the same time, a further step in the duo's artistic process, which determines their willingness to go beyond any goal already achieved. For MCIAA to make art means to risk daring the unknown, daring the listener himself to excel his own limits of perception of the work of art in music, without losing anything of their unique and unmistakable style. If, as many of the international critics have been remarking, MCIAA's works live on the boundary between Light and Darkness, it's also true that Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium celebrated the light of the outer spaces as well as Leave Me In The Black No-Thing represents a jump into the No-Thing of the empty inner spaces. Recorded in their secret recording-space up on the Western Alps of Piedmont, Italy, during the trespassing from dusk to the beginning of the night, the work lives of the same dark magic of the Wagnerian post-romantic overtures, suspended between the deepest silence and the most deflagrating sonic attack. Light/Darkness, noise/silence, permeated by Roberto Opalio's suffering vocal tunes, which defines and underlines the edge of the work. After the cacophonic and free implosion of the nucleus of the initials 30 minutes, 25 minutes of painful silence follow, sounding like the last whisper before the final end: angels' chorus and ectoplasmatic presences float on Maurizio Opalio's crystal-clear guitar strings. It's the Cosmic Blues of the III Millennium, which penetrates into the soul, leaving indelible signs.

The work consists of four tracks, for a total length of 38:02 minutes. Roberto Opalio is a visual and sound artist from Torino, Italy. His work includes painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, poetry, glass art, film/video, sound installation, and performance. Since 1998 Roberto Opalio acts as musician (together with his brother Maurizio) in the avant-garde improv duo My Cat Is An Alien. PS, US Sarandon , the English spiky-pop trio formed in late 2003, will be releasing their collection of U.S. and U.K. singles "The Completist's Library" on December 5 via Athens, GA HHBTM Records. It's a 32 track CD & LP compiling the four mini albums released by Sarandon thus far. From the opening song "Pin up" to the closing "Anthony & Simon", all 32 songs work as a whole regardless of the time between recordings as well as personnel changes. Sarandon formed in late 2003 between London and Leicester. Sarandon are a pop band with a short attention span. Head Honcho, Crayola had been in mid-Eighties antiheroes The Colgates. He also ran Thee Foundation for Nothing cassette label and performed in too many bands to recall, including Future Sperm Brasil, Scooter, Pimp, Rocket Jockey & Team Mollusk. He's appeared on over 100 albums and released 25 solo albums. He now runs the kabukikore label. He had the idea for Sarandon swirling round in his head for some time and finally got round to asking his friends Joe and James if they'd help out. Their first release was a 7 track 7" album entitled "The Miniest Album" (Run Out / Banazan). Released in 2004 it quickly gathered some great reviews from all over the world along with a bunch of radio play. Not bad for a band that had only rehearsed twice and played live once before their recording. There's even rumor of possible gigging action for the elusive 3-piece, including the possibility of some shows alongside legendary Japanese nutcases (and fans of the band), Melt Banana. PS, UK CD collection of Dada-related works by French avant-garde composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) including scores for Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Kurt Schwitters and Rene Clair. An enthusiastic Dada activist in Paris between 1920 and 1924, Erik Satie collaborated extensively with Tzara, Man Ray, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, wrote often in Picabia s journal 391, and was a sworn enemy of the Surrealist faction lead by Andre Breton. According to Man Ray, Satie was  the only composer who had eyes. All of Satie s principle Dada-related works are included on this unique CD: Trois morceaux en forme de poire, performed by Satie in July 1923 at Tzara s notorious Soirée du Coeur a barbe, at which fighting broke out between Tzara s supporters and the proto-Surrealist faction. Ragtime Dada, an extract from the ballet Parade performed at a series of Dada soirees by Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg in 1922. Entr acte and Cinéma, both scores for Francis Picabia s dazzling multi-media  instantaneist ballet Relâche performed in 1924. Cinéma was Satie s custom score for the celebrated intermission film by René Clair, while for their curtain call Satie and Picabia drove onstage in a tiny car, resplendent in jewels and furs, the whole production amounting to an act of anti-art provocation. Both are Satie s arrangements for solo piano. The 70 minute CD (40 tracks) is performed on piano by Bojan Gorisek, while the booklet features archive images and detailed historical notes by James Hayward.

This is an album that symbion project did not expect to make; an album that you probably did not expect to hear. Encapsulated within are collisions of epic forces, chaotic sexuality, religious underpinnings, enlightened fragments of joy. During a brief, 3 week vacation from the recording of the soon to be released 3rd Freezepop album, Kasson Crooker (aka The duke from the synthpop trio Freezepop, also ex-Splashdown) wanted to focus on a collection of songs inspired by some of his favorite movie soundtracks. Moved by the epic nature of Vangelis (Bladerunner, Chariots of Fire) and retro/future aesthetic of Wendy Carlos (Clockwork Orange, Tron), Symbion Project created a "baroque minimalist electro" album that could live seamlessly in 1762, 1962 or 2162. Concerned with the nondynamic, robotic stagnancy of current electronic music, along with the overwhelming nature of being surrounded by a studio full of synthesizers and blinking audio gear, this album was crafted using only a single 32vco analog synthesizer. Very little was sequenced (except for the blazingly fast runs that Bach himself couldn't even do) and almost all the parts were played in by hand. Constant attention was given to exploiting and exaggerating the emotional tension of the songs through use of dynamics, from the initial songwriting to the final mastering (analog of course).

"The Moonstation House Band" album captures the highlights from his two-year immersion in Jay Bennett's Clubhouse - as Vandervelde refers to the studio in Chicago - where he isolated himself to record this record virtually on his own, using the former WILCO multi-instrumentalist's studio as a big toy instrument, enjoying access to much of the same gear as used on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "Being There". Self-taught on guitar, drums, bass, piano, synth, and other studio tools, the listener can hear that Vandervelde is an adventurous artist, who embraces classic rock songwriting and whose spirit is just banging at the door to get unleashed.

The programme also includes extended interviews with Brian Eno and iconic French actress Jeanne Moreau. Writing in NME in 1980, journalist Paul Morley praised From Brussels With Love thus: "This is a reminder - without really trying, without being obvious - that pop is modern poetry, is the sharpest, shiniest collection of experiences, is always something new." PS, US I can hardly wipe the smile off my face as I listen to The Velcro Stars. Their mid-90's Chapel Hill, NC-esque sound is enveloping my person as I type this. It's certainly one of the most exciting things going on in the revitalized (and...pssssssst.....quite "hip") Murfreesboro/Nashville, TN independent music scene along with How I Became The Bomb, Ghostfinger, and The Turncoats. Initially comprised of Shane Spresser (guitar/vocals) and Keith Pratt (guitar/vocals), they began writing songs together after high school. They were joined in 2001 by Rebekah Kidd (keyboards/vocals). Danial Norman was a high school acquaintance and joined them as their bassist in 2001. After going through several drummers, Andy Spore filled the position and began playing with them in 2005. "The Velcro Stars are one of the most interesting, original, and level-headed bands to come out of Murfreesboro in a long time. Their songs are simplistic and well arranged, and bring with them hints of Pavement, Blake Babies, and Superchunk." (nashvillezine.com) Enter Grand Palace Records. Grand Palace is an independent record store in Murfreesboro, TN. It's also a loft space that houses a recording studio and screen-printing shop. Owned and operated by Murfreesboro music scene luminaries, they decided to capitalize on the revitalized scene by recording some of their favorites (Velcros included). Thus, Grand Palace Records (the label) began. "Hiroshima's Revenge" is the first full-length to be released on Grand Palace Records (a joint co-release with much help and support from Athens, GA's Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records, who became smitten with the band after their show-stopping performance at the 2006 Athens Popfest). With the recording of "Hiroshima's Revenge", the Velcros finally make good on the promise of the "Heart Disease / Shock and Awe" Demo as well as their self-titled 7-track EP from 2005. This album is a pleasant reminder of the pure joy, immediacy, and lack of pretension that's at the heart of all great three-chord rock and roll.
