Parasol New Arrivals • March 06, 2007

Hello friends,

We’re really excited to announce that we are stocking hand picked titles from the ultra-cool RPM label! They have consistently put out stellar re-issues, so do yourself a favor and checkout some of the titles listed below, in the update.

In other news, I finally got my grubby little paws on an LP copy of Midlake’s “Trials of Van Occupanther” courtesy of Ebay but unfortunately, it was quite the pricey little item. And as my luck would have it, it will probably be back in print by the time the post person delivers it to me. But hey, what are you going to do?

All right then. Get comfortable, and get ready to visit the Parasol site because there are so many great new releases that you’ll be beside yourself.

For those about to order, we salute you,

Roy & Paul

Perishers "Let There Be Morning" CD $13.00 (Nettwerk)
The Swedish band's American debut, Let There Be Morning, is a blend of emotional wandering, poetic insight and stark, yet inspirational surroundings. As equally seductive as their acclaimed debut you will rarely hear music as exquisite and as heartbreaking as The Perishers´& Seductive 70s pop delicacies, ultra-lush arrangements, and Ola's demonstrative vocals make for an alluring collection of songs, equal parts rootsy Arctic Circle romancing and glimmering, ghostly baroque-pop brilliance& The lyrics describe love and friendships lined with betrayal, loneliness and the fear of being abandoned. Ola's deep rich voice reassuring you that there is still a certain joy within all this melancholy. For fans of Starlet, Ronderlin, Travis, Kevin Tihista, The Blessed Light, Todd Rundgren, The Doves, Jeff Buckley, and The Tindersticks.

Moonbabies "War On Sound" [2007, 3-song import single] CD5 $2.00 (Startracks)
The Concretes "Kids EP" CD5 $6.00 (Licking Fingers)

We got a two-fer this week, advance EP teasers from two of Sweden's finest pop acts, The Concretes and The Moonbabies!
Moonbabies' new album, Moonbabies At The Ballroom, will be released by our own Hidden Agenda label in May (we'll offer it to you early, in April, of course), but we've got a stack of their import three-song single from their new Swedish label Startracks to whet your appetite. Meanwhile, on the other side of town... Sure, The Concretes are minus vocalist Victoria B, but that hasn't stopped them from putting together a new album of orchestral girl-group orchestral folktronica, sonic enchantment that sounds a bit like Heikki and El Perro Del Mar, and not as sleepy as their last outing. The new four-song EP on their label Licking Fingers features "Kids" (from the upcoming album Hey Trouble, due pretty soon) plus three exclusive non-album b-sides. Sound samples for both titles on the front page later this week. Check out more new Swedish/Scandinavian/Nordic music here.

+/- (Plus/Minus) vs. Bloodthristy Butchers
Split
PS, US +/- specializes in dynamic, loud, Radiohead-ish indie-rock & simultaneously laptop-pop. Experimentation with interesting time signatures & negative space within a hooky hard pop structure. Here, they take on three Bloodthirsty Butchers songs & make them their own. BB was formed in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan in 1987. With their ultra loud almost emo, heavy alterna-rock, transparent & melodious sounds, they are now one of the best band that Japan can boast to the world. The two bands became fast friends while touring Japan & decided to record this split EP. Each band covers three of the others songs. Artwork by famous Japanese illustrator Yoshitomo Nara. Enhanced with live video footage of both bands on stage in Japan.

31Knots
The Days and Nights of Everything Anywhere
PS, US The best music is always truly indefinable. Words can't truly describe Tom Waits'caterwaul the same way they can't explain what it feels like to experience thedeafening volume of a J. Mascis guitar solo. Portland, Oregon's prolific 31Knots have described their sound as "post-apocalyptic Vaudevillian punk," and whilethat's an apt description, it doesn't begin to express the level of demented-popbrilliance on the band's latest full-length, The Days and Nights of EverythingAnywhere. Thanks to an expert mixing job by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and engineering byJay Pellicci (Deerhoof engineer), 31Knots have transformed their musical landscape into a skewed fantasy world located somewhere between Alice In Wonderlandand Cursive's Happy Hollow.

PS, US Building from the revolutionary blueprint of afrobeat, the dozen-strong members of Brooklyn's Antibalas weave Latin, jazz, funk, and horn-laden soul into a blend that's both polyrhythmic and political, independent and infectious. Produced by John McEntire (Stereolab, Tortoise, Sea and Cake, Tom Ze) who has upped the harmonic density in the band's sound, creating a rich tapestry of harmelodic color that owes as much to Mingus and Coltrane and Can as it does to Fela Kuti.

Apostle of Hustle
National Anthem of Nowhere
PS, CANADA Andrew Whiteman (BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE) describes the album as follows: Its a long Hitchcockian zoom-in, the omniscient clouds part, the sleazy waterfront scene is set... Everyone who feels theys they have no voice or cant be heard, they are suddenly united. They meet strangers in nowhere places & will never forget those meetings. They wander out into the suburban, in-between zones & there are welcomed.

Baikal
S/T
PS, US New burner from BARDO POND brothers John & Michael Gibbons along with fellow members Clint Takeda & Jason Kourkonis. This time they ventured down the route of heavy free-improvisation & a Last Exit style hard rock approach coupled with a hard psych bend. With two tracks each weighing in at over 30 minutes in length it's clear that Baikal is a deep voyage underseas with yet another mindblowing side project.

Banksy
Wall & Piece
PS, US Artistic genius, political activist, painter & decorator, mythic legend or notorious graffiti artist? The work is unmistakable, except may be when it's squatting in the Tate or New York's Metropolitan Museum. Witty & subversive, his stencils show monkeys w/ weapons of mass destruction, policeman w/ smiley faces, rats w/ drills, & umbrellas. His identity remains unknown, but his work is prolific. This feat. old & new work in a fully illustrated color volume.

Bark Haze, The
Total Joke Era
PS, US This exclusive CD release is entirely different from the LP release on Important, which is also untitled. The Bark Haze is primarily a guitar duo of GOWN (nom de plume of one Andrew Macgregor) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth, etc). Auxiliary members have been know to include Pete Nolan (Magik Markers, Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Cops et al). Their name came from a mishearing of the radical early 70s R+B group the Bar-Kays and from that moment the concept of mishearing and allegiance to presenting the mishearing as some open-ended musical course became The Bark Haze's identity. So far all concerts have taken place in Western Massachusetts and once in the confines of Cambridge, MA's Twisted Village record emporium. They anxiously await their debut gig in the UK at the Nightmare Before Christmas event curated by Moore. As the heroic and potentially bonkers Carpenters refrained We've Only Just Begun. Damn straight.

Beaulieau, Emil
Moonlight In Vermont
PS, US Nom de plume of Ron Lessard, long regarded as the most significant arbiter of American noise music. His performances are legendary. W/ bizarre turntable machinations, a sweater-vest, tie & table-lamp his live show is a possessed demon dance to the relationship of normality & not-rightness. This has long been considered one of his most masterful documents. The details are ridiculous in retrospect but his original cover concept of a minimal white lettering on black jacket got skabibbled & resulted in him creating hand-made cut n' paste collage covers. Every LP is it's own work of art & each is stunning.

Big Business

PS, US Big Business feature members of The Melvins. This is their second full-length and it's harder, faster, and catchier than the first, unfurling all the mammoth riffs, furious vocals, and blazing drum work you've come to expect from this LA band. "Some of the most relentless, unyielding, and profound music in heavy metal today" - Thrasher Magazine. "These guys manage to deconstruct, reinvent, and then rebuild the typical noise rock formula" - Chord.

PS, US The legendary Boston guitarist and drummer for Come, Codeine, Pullman, Consonant, Kahoots, and then some, offers up his first solo 7-inch. Coming on the heels of two critically acclaimed solo records, "Incredible Love" and "Red Cities", this EP showcases another side of Chris's work. It features three instrumental outtakes from his score to Leslie McCleave's feature film "Road", as well as a drum-heavy dub mix from a Kahoots recording session. Gorgeous glossy cover images photographed by Brokaw himself and ultra high-quality transparent green vinyl make this a package worthy of wall display.

Burning Star Core
Blood Lightning 2007
PS, US Full of creeping drones, strange mutilated vocal incursions, and compositions full of unidentifiable sounds both acoustic and electronic. Another classic in organized sound and idea from the mind of Mr. C. Spencer Yeh. Blood Lightning is the third in a series of very particular BxC works in theme and scope, beginning with "Three Sisters Who Share an Eye" (No Fun limited LP series), and then "Everyday World of Bodies" LP (Ultra Eczema.) Ideas of drone, 'minimalism,' and human themes are heavily a concern, and unlike other recent and upcoming major works, BxC on these albums is kept intimate, primarily operated by C. Spencer Yeh. Instrumentation includes the current BxC trinity of voice, violin and electronics, surrounded by a whole host of other methods. In recent years the BxC line-up both live and in-studio has included Robert Beatty and Trevor Tremaine (of Kentucky/Michigan-based maniacs Hair Police) and solo sound artist Mike Shiflet- Who all appear on the last track of this release. Burning Star Core began in 1993 in Cincinnati, Ohio where it currently resides with primary member C. Spencer Yeh. It is considered a project and not a pseudonym. Not married to any traditional line-up, method or sound, Yeh's eclecticism separates him from his peers. BxC will be appearing live throughout the first half of 2007, including a tour of US and Canada with Carlos Giffoni and Prurient, a weekend of festivals in Germany, a collaborative appearance with Zaimph at No Fun Fest 2007, and other individual events.

Castanets/Dirty Projectors
Unusual Animals, Vol. 2
PS, US Volume 2 of ASTHMATIC KITTY's Unusual Animals limited edition vinyl series finds Brooklyn residents CASTANETS and DIRTY PROJECTORS splitting sides. Castanets offer up "BlackWater," a bloody and muddy dubbed-out blues track, penned while on their epic and catastrophic sailboat tour with Jana Hunter and Peter & the Wolf in the Summer of 2006, and recorded upon the first day of final harbor. After a deep idiosyncratic investigation of electronic music and classical orchestration on "The Getty Address" and the "New Attitude" EP, Dirty Projector's DAVE LONGSTRETH turns to the live band as his compositional tool with the nine-minute epic "Silence in the Lands."

Coltrane, John
Giant Steps (Deluxe Edition)
PS, US Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Tommy Flanagan, Wynton Kelly, Cedar Walton (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor, Lex Humphries, Jimmy Cobb (drums). Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on April 1, May 4 and December 2, 1959. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. John Coltrane's maiden voyage for Atlantic Records was the fulfillment of all the potential he'd demonstrated with Miles, Monk and on his own Prestige recordings. Recorded in May 1959 (one month after completing Davis' KIND OF BLUE), GIANT STEPS is Coltrane's first recital to feature nothing but his own original compositions, and is the culmination of his obsessive foray into harmony. By taking all of the notes in a chord--and trying to find every possible inversion and relevant substitution--the saxophonist was forced to develop a complex new form of melodic phrasing that enabled him to rhythmically crowd every permutation into a single phrase. The effect is not only technically impressive, but an emotional marvel as well. On equestrian events such as the up-tempo title tune and "Countdown," Coltrane blazes through the changes with a torrential effusion of ideas, each phrase connected to the next with unerring logic and a sublime sense of symmetry. Every note in the lower, middle and upper register of his horn is articulated with power, precision and a variety of expressive timbres. His manipulation of overtones and multiphonics imparts a hair-raising vocal immediacy to his cry, and each solo culminates in a stirring emotional catharsis. This is bebop to the tenth power. But the joy of Coltrane's art is not predicated on its intellectual dexterity. The charming stop-time cadences of "Syeeda's Song Flute" depict an upbeat, child-like disposition, inspiring a particularly celebratory Coltrane solo. The vamping figures of "Cousin Mary" and "Mr. P.C." lead to solos permeated with blues fervor. And of course, there's "Naima" (written for John's first wife), one of the saxophonist's tenderest, most enduring themes, with a melody that floats above Tommy Flanagan's serene chordal colors like a solitary cloud at dusk.

Hee Haw Hell
PS, US The undisputed kings of Southern country punk. This blows any stereotypes about Red staters, punks, & country rockers out of the water w/ the genius of its conceit: it's a country punk opera based on...Dante's Inferno! With spoken parts & good ol' rock-n-roll, they tell the story of Donkey's tour of Hell (populated by ghosts of Lynrd Skynrd and hippie jam bands) with Ol' Virg. Davis, Ben/Des Ark
Battle of the Beards
PS, US The slow builds & soft confessionals of AIMEE ARGOTE's (DES ARK) tracks play perfect counterpoint to DAVIS' pulsing songcraft. Themes weave in & out of infidelity, botched love affairs, & late night rolls in the hay. She belts wherein he whispers, a single piano or acoustic guitar is butted up against a lush orchestra, & by the last note of these 12 tracks you begin to realize the potential of alliance & the unspoken compliments of friendship.

Dawn of Man
In the Bronze Age
PS, US Brian Clancy (BLUETIP) has been grinding his teeth on his fretboard since the old Balt./DC basement punk days where he met producer David Sitek (TVOTR). Destroy All Dreamers
Glare/Halo EP
PS, US 180g BLACK VINYL 12". Destroyalldreamers captivated us to no end with their gorgeous debut album in 2004 (the year's best shoegaze record, handsdown!) We were ecstatic to have them record a special limited record just for us, and we are quite excited to present it to you. LIMITED to 100 red vinyl copies (mailorder-direct only), and 200 black vinyl copies, all pressed on heavy audiophile-quality 180-gram virgin vinyl. Housed in a gorgeous die-cut jacket in the Claire's Echo series by Aaron Winters, with a slip-in full color heavy card cover image, backed with a beautiful close-up shot of a guitar in b&w. Destroyalldreamers does destroy indeed, with their beautiful and intense sonic landscapes. The instrumental outfit from Montreal keeps you on the edge of your seat as they weave through tapestries of billowing, effected guitars to create massive layers of beauty and noise. Fans of Slowdive, Explosions in the Sky, Paik, etc. definitely fall in love with Destroyalldreamers the moment they hear them. The EP is kicked off with the incredible "Her Brother Played the Riot" - a monumental side-long track eclipsing 20 minutes that had to broken into 3-parts on the forthcoming album. Here it appears on vinyl exclusively. On the flip, we are treated to three shorter but equally powerful tracks: Dead on Arrival (100% exclusive to this release), A Summer Without You (another taster from the forthcoming album on WAMR), and A La Guerre Comme A La Mer (another 100% exclusive track that will not appear elsewhere).

DJ Hidden
After Before
PS, GERMANY The vinyl companion to the CD "The Later After" (adn73), DJ Hidden's "After Before" gathers on a 12" two of the most club-oriented tracks from the album. A deadly tool for any DJ and a sign of many packed dancefloors, these two loud, slowly building, insidious and agile tracks demonstrate DJ Hidden's ability at twisting the very roots of drum'n'bass and fusing them with his own high-fi production and melodic skills. Active since the mid-90s, Noel Wessels has over the years become an essential actor of the Dutch electronic music scene. Best known for his productions and shows under the DJ Hidden moniker as well as founding member of the gabber unit The Outside Agency, this untiring producer has been active in all genres of electronic musics, signing records and CDs of countless side-projects (along which the very remarked, laid back Semiomine one). Starting in 2000, Noel Wessels's DJ Hidden drum'n'bass-focused act has been taking this scene by storm. A pioneer of the current mixture of hard, dark drum'n'bass and sudden break(core), his records for Outbreak, Evol Intent, Ruff-Teck or Killing Sheep (among others) have quickly become classics for DJ and fans. "After Before" is the vinyl pendant to "The Later After", the long awaited first full length album by DJ Hidden, coming out on Ad Noiseam at the same time as this records. It contains slightly reworked version of two of the album tracks, edited and mastered with DJ and clubs' PA in mind. The two tracks on this well cut, loud 12" are among both the most club-friendly and the hardest of the material written by DJ Hidden, and sees his productions and recording skills take yet one more step forward.

DJ Hidden
The Later After
PS, GERMANY After 25 releases on vinyl over the course of seven years (not counting the ones of his Outside Agency and Semiomime monikers), for such labels as Ruff Teck, Outbreak, Killing Sheep or Sub/Version, here comes finally the first full length album by DJ Hidden. "The Later After" presents a hour long of new material ranging from the hardest and most twisted drum'n'bass to more downtempo, atmospheric tracks. At the same time a long due crowning for this musician and a perfect introduction for people who have been missing out, "The Later After" is the most accomplished and unequalled achievement by this impudently skilful producer. "The Later After" is a wide-ranging display of the various styles that this musician has touched over the years, combined in twelve tracks written specially for this release. "The Later After" could finally not be a DJ Hidden release if there wasn't anything hidden in it. From the complex artwork (designed by DJ Hidden himself) to the flawless and intricate audio productions, this album might turn into a treasure-hunt, are many details, messages and surprises lay there for the attentive listener to find.

Elastik Band, The
S/T
PS, US Known almost exclusively for their extremely politically incorrect 1967 Nuggets cult favorite "Spazz" (track #2), the Elastik Band was actually a highly talented group that could play just about any popular style in vogue during the mid-to-late 60s, much like the Knickerbockers. Thus, at times they sound like the Byrds with vibraphone ("Mixed Emotions," #3), the Mamas & the Papas ("All I Need," #10), the Syndicate of Sound ("Lose Yourself," 19), and even what sounds like a parody of the Zombies ("Fire and Desire," #9). But the group excelled at the 12-string guitar and multipart harmonies of groups like the Byrds and Beau Brummels, as many tracks on the disc attest. They also had a few curiosities besides "Spazz": "Popcorn" (#7) being the closest, though "Mrs. Pig" (#17) would also qualify. The last track is from an Australian radio broadcast in 1968 in which the DJ begins playing the song "Spazz" but cuts it off before completion and calls it "offensive." This disc, released on lead singer David Cortopassi's private label, represents the band's complete output of their own compositions (they also recorded a Jimmy Webb tune at one point), some never before released. Hopefully the release, though belated, will show that the Elastik Band was far more than a novelty one-hit wonder.

First Class, The
Summer Sound Sensations
PS, UK Bob Stanley writes: Beach Baby was possibly the fullest flowering of the John Carter Sound - constantly shape shifting, the harmonies, the strings, and more hooks than any four minute pop single should have by rights. John Peel raved about it in 'Sounds' and it was no.4 in the US in the summer of '74. In Britain it stalled at 11 but felt much bigger- it's been a radio staple since. This studio group, including luminaries such as Tony Burrows, Chas Mills, Spencer James (from the Searchers), and Clare Torry (of Pink Floyd fame), released two LP's and recorded tracks for a third that remained unreleased. All continued in the vein described above of hook laden /harmony driven /string backed perfectly produced pop. All recorded 1974 -1977, plus a bonus track from 1985 when Carter recorded a throw back single for possible release in Holland when Beach Baby became a reissued hit, that totally captures the Beach Baby excitement and gives it the hi-production wall of sound.

"EYES OF LOVE" Recording very much with the spirit of Two-Tone in mind and the energy of early Kinks, this uplifting summer groover is sung by Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch & Sarah Martin. "IT'S IN THE HEART OF EVERYONE" Simple mathematics with former Lydia Lunch /Swans/Current 93 collaborator Joe Budenholzer with harmonies from Karine Polwart -minus 4 equals 7 indeed. "BOOMERANG" Slight return-the second coming of our man Joseph Budenholzer. "THE CITY OF LIGHT" The Go-Betweens Robert Forster & Grant McLennan do a 'reading' of this miniscule pop gem, 58 seconds of undiluted Pop to spring clean your mind! "NUCLEAR WAR" Members of Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore/Kim Gordon), The Fire Engines (Davy Henderson) and Stooges/Minutemen bass legend (Mike Watt) pay homage to the spirit of jazz giant Sun Ra ,on this one of his minimalist compositions from the 70's.This track also features a rare recording of the 'fu-horn' performed by iconic radio producer Stewart Cruickshank. "SHENANDOAH" This haunting folk song features chilling vocals and waterfall piano by Karine Polwart alongside young Glasgow improv percussionist Alex Neilson on loan from Scatter/Glasgow Improviser's Orchestra. "FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS" This historic track documents a genuine piece of 'instant composing' featuring a live jam across the telephone exchange, Sushil K Dade performs on acoustic guitar in Glasgow whilst Damo Suzuki (Can) listens to the chords 'down the line' from his Cologne HQ and responds with his hauntingly poignant, crackly telephone vocals.

Gants
I Wonder
PS, UK A band from Mississippi who weren't Delta Bluesmen but a white frat-rock group who developed, through the writing of their own leader Sid Herring, into a stirring US pop/rock band. They lasted from 1963-1967 recording 3 albums and 7 singles for Liberty, and "I Wonder" presents the definitive collection from across that catalogue. The band toured the US with The Animals and Dave Clark, then played with homegrown outfits such as Sam The Sham and the Swinging Medallions. They recorded at Muscle Shoals and Nashville, the music beginning with American Mersey Beat and progressing to the kind of harmony pop/rock that was a blend of Paul Revere and the Beatles "Rubber Soul".

PS, UK Limited CDR only release. Over the last four years, Make Mine Music - a collective of musicians and independent label - has established a name for itself for its catalogue of beguiling and varied music, from the wistful nostalgia of July Skies and Epic45 to the ambient dreamscapes of Yellow6 and Portal. Jatun
S/T
PS, US Jatun is Alan Grosvenor (guitar, keys, bass, loops) and Scott Worley (vocals, keys, guitars, laptop). Alan and Scott met in Portland,OR circa '04, and started writing the songs that would slowly form into the mish-mash of cables, circuits, ivory and alcohol known as Jatun. They began recording their self-titled debut album in September 2005, and it's been engineered/mixed by Scott & Alan and mastered by Carl Saff. The first recorded Jatun song was "Ion Crush," which was featured in a Nike SB promo video for the Zoom Tre shoe and is also featured on the Signal Snowboards webpage. The songs "Ghost and Grey", and "The Temptation of Joy" have been used by Norwegian company Helly Hansen, accompanying snowboard and ski team imagery on two videos. Additionaly the video clips are being used on the Helly Hansen website as a part of their HHTV program. Influenced by an expansive range of artists, genres and styles, Alan and Scott have learned to interpret and appreciate sound from a broad perspective. Such open ears have facilitated an understanding of sonic interplay, and acute attention to arrangement and detail. Armed to the teeth with an arsenal of quality, vintage gear and a penchant for capturing the resultant noises, they craft music thoroughly and thoughtfully. Lush, enveloping and hyper-textured, Jatun's songs blanket themselves around your ears and saturate your head with warm and intoxicating, Orange-tinged tones. Jawbone
S/T
PS, UK Jawbone was born from the ashes of The Mirage and Turquoise, two of the UK's greatest cult pop-psych bands (and both recently anthologized on RPM and Rev-Ola respectively) and their lone 1970 album rounds off their stories perfectly. They were thrown together after guitarist Ray Glynn and drummer Dave Hynes decided to re-form The Mirage after a short stint in The Spencer Davis Group came to an end in 1969 (they appear on the excellent "Short Change" single and ill-fated Funky album). Vocalist Pete Hynes and former bassist Dee Murray was swiftly poached for Elton John's band so they recruited keyboard player and former Mirage sidekick/songwriter Kirk Duncan who called up another former colleague, Jeff "Gus" Peters of the recently defunct Turquoise to handle bass duties. Dave Hynes secured the band a deal with Merv Cohn's newly minted Carnaby label and they changed their name to The Portebello (sic) Explosion for a single coupling the dreamy, Beatlesque pop-sike of "We Can Fly" and a tough, hard-edged cover of Bubble Puppy's minor US hit "Hot Smoke And Sassafras". The single went nowhere but album sessions began regardless in late 1969 with the re-recording of three old Mirage tunes - "How's Ya Pa?", "Chicago Cottage" and "Jeremiah Dreams" (mis-titled "Jeremiah's Dream" on the eventual album), a suitably demented re-working of their unreleased 1967 psychedelic opus "Ebeneezer Beaver". When "How's Ya Pa?" was released as a single in early 1970, it was credited to yet another new moniker, Jawbone. Typically for this period, Dave Hynes had become obsessed by The Band and set about remodeling the group in their image. Consequently, titles like "Honeysuckle Redwood Cabin", "Homestead" and "Mister Custer" came thick and fast, bearing the distinct influences of The Band and The Byrds.

Library Tapes
Feelings For Something Lost
PS, UK Second album from the Swedish contemporary classical duo, a year on from their acclaimed debut 'Alone In The Bright Lights Of A Shattered Life'. Once more, sparse, bleak compositions take centre stage on "Feelings For Something Lost", with the piano more prominent and the overall sound more stripped down than was the case with its predecessor; dark atmospherics echoing the work of Rachels, Set Fire To Flames, Sylvain Chauveau et al. Once again the album is the work of David Wenngren and Per Jardsell, with guest appearances from Cecile Schott (COLLEEN) on the stunning "Leaves Abstract In A Village Plunged Into Mourning" and Erik Skovdin (DEAF CENTER) on "Departures (Burning Saints For Your Own Sins)". The album features twelve tracks, recorded between November 2004 and January 2006, all of which have lengthy titles that convey the feeling of the music perfectly.

Library Tapes
Alone in the Bright Lights of a Shattered Life
PS, UK Library Tapes are a Swedish dup whose work echoes the likes of Max Richter, Lunz, Sylvian Chaveau, Rachels and A Silver Mt Zion. Comprised of piano, acoustic/electric guitars, balalaika and the a trusty laptop, 'Alone In The Bright Lights...' seems to exist in a distant tundra, with the listener coaxed into embarking on a hugely rewarding journey. Whilst the stiff melodies of opening composition 'Broken Piano Pt.2' are draftily satisfying, it is '...in a safe place...somewhere near your heart...' that really establishes their sound. Not unlike a William Basinski piece, 'In a safe place...' takes an emotionally wrought piano and allows it to languidly meander over a stirring landscape of half-glimpsed sonic sturctures and soundscapes that can't help but make an emotional impact on this listener. Gorgeous.

London, Julie
Lonely Girl
PS, UK Yes the girl who single handedly launched the Torch Singer genre...and opened the door for every imperfect but sexy vocalist since..... The most remarkable thing about Julie London is remarkable indeed: that she used her erotic persona not so much to interpret songs as to change the nature of them to become something other than when sung by anyone else. She used her breathy, sexy, sultry voice not to sing a version of a song that could compete with someone else's on a scale of good to better to best, but to change it's meaning. This, her second album, carries on from where her first left off...soft eroticism and single entendre...songs of yearning and loneliness in Julie's own bedroom whisper...just try to resist! The acclaim and success enjoyed by our issue of her first album legendary "Julie Is Her Name" tells you all you need to know....what a woman, what a record...I'll go and lie down now... Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love
S/T
PS, US Low Low formed in March 2004 when Kelly Dyson met Natalia Brightmore in the George over a pint, two days after he'd split from his long-time partner and moved from Carlisle to Buxton with a handful of songs. The pair clicked and work began on turning Kelly's rough acoustic songs into rough acoustic songs with a female harmony. The album was quite a sparse thing for the main part, though Ellis Dyson expanded a few tracks with drums and electric guitars. The process from there was pretty quick - the album was polished (to Low Low's standards) within a few months was released on the *Birds and the Rodents Label (UK)*. Through their earnest, stripped-down approach to song writing, Low Low taps into your head and heart before you've even noticed; and by then it's too late to turn back (not that you'd want to anyway). The vulnerability and undeniable necessity of love, loss, heartache and hopefulness abounds in each affected lyric, and is further evoked by every subtle bend and pull. "As acoustic documents of the breakdown of a long-term relationships go, this is up there. Recorded lo-fi style - in a bedroom apparently - this affecting release combines breathless harmonies and fragile tunes to achieve a strange warmth. Also makes Belle & Sebastian sound like Motorhead." - The Crack "Rooted firmly in the world of low/no-fi folk, this is a charming record that recalls the same juxtaposition of fragility and strength of character that suffused the early Elliott Smith albums." - Tangents. For Fans Of: Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Six Organs of Admittance, Songs of Green Pheasant, Nick Drake.

Mandelbrot Set
All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated
PS, UK Mandelbrot Set is a loud band. They like their drones and their converse-gazing, they like to use sample pedals and to change instruments during sets, but mainly they like to be loud, and they like to do it differently. Formed by Keung, from the ashes of his previous band, Hentai, of whom Drowned In Sound remarked "It's a relief to know that not all angsty teenagers listen to Radiohead and spend the rest of their adolescence trying to emulate Muse. Some of them stick Boards Of Canada stickers on their guitars, acquire DD-5 sample pedals and violin bows, and proceed to work the Mogwai-esque quiet / loud / louder / apocalyptic dynamic till their ears bleed." Mandelbrot Set take their love of all things on the Constellation label, their penchant for electronics, effects pedals and live sampling, their Shellac-esque rhythmic aggression, and combine it all into a wall of noise, melody and epic structure that would make Kevin Shields envious.

Mary Onettes, The
Void
PS, SWEDEN Sweden's finest is back with a three amazing new songs that makes us remember the days of The Smiths - when every song on every single was equally important. "Void" sounds somewhat like a modern version of A-ha dressed in black mixed with early The Jesus and Mary Chain on an arena. The EP contains two brilliant, exclusive tracks that will not appear on the album. Inspired by indie bands from the 80's, a singer sounding like a Swedish relative to Ian McCullough or Bryan Ferry, and the talent to write the most heartfelt, emotional pop songs imaginable The Mary Onettes is a dream come true for any pop lover. McWilliams, David
The Days of David McWilliams
PS, UK An Irish folk rock artist who in 1967 released three albums of his own material on the Major Minor label. An amazing period of productivity matched by the amazing consistency of quality throughout all the material he wrote and recorded. Musically he backed himself on 6 and 12 string guitar with further arrangements and orchestration provided by the then wunderkind producer Mike Leander. The combination of McWilliams heartfelt lyrics and songstyle with Leanders evocative arrangements of the simple melodies still sound bewitching today. 'The Days Of Pearly Spencer' was covered by Marc Almond in the early 90's and 'Three O'Clock Flamingo Street' is another radio favourite. There has only been one other McWilliams compilation, released by EMI when the Almond single was a hit in 1992. That collection has long since been deleted and this RPM collection only repeats four tracks from the EMI set. For McWilliams fans and 60's folk/rock fans the idea is to follow up this present collection with a Volume two later in the year. The RPM collection presents a range of subject matter, some of their time such as Hiroshima and Harlem Lady, others love songs that transcend time. The English had Donovan, the Americans had Dylan, the Irish had McWilliams.

Microphones
Don't Smoke/Get Off The Internet
PS, US It has been a while since the last album or concert by "the MICROPHONES". Lately "MOUNT EERIE" has been taking up that space. Now we have this new miniature record out of nowhere (actually out of Anacortes, Washington, the awkward town up on the edge of Canada where Phil Elverum, the originator of all this music and hubbub, runs the family record label and publisher). These 2 songs are a 2007 modifi cation of punk directness. "Do as I say"-style lyrics and "feel as I feel"-style music. It s quite different from the introspective metaphorical state park parking-lot songs the Microphones have become known for. Over moden grunge, these songs say "There is no God. Deal with yourself. Clean up your mess. Take responsibility."

Ministry of Sound
Midsummer Nights Dreaming/Men from the Ministry
PS, UK Upon its release in 1966, Men from the Ministry received heavy promotion on pirate radio. Disc jockey Kevin McKew was particularly fond of the record and played it five times through on his show, declaring the album "the breakthrough record of 1966." Because McKew had a 2:00 AM slot his promotion did little to help sales. Inspection of the back cover of the LP reveals that the disc jockey had a vested interest in the record; he had written the sleeve note.

Moaners
Blackwing Yalobusha
PS, US North Carolina-based garage-blues duo decided to revisit their Mississippi roots & record their latest album with former Squirrel Nut Zippers founder & producer Jimbo Mathus. Amid the thousand-pound heat the female duo churned out a slow burning collection of songs that chant & spit their way through the spirit world of the old south. The songs tell tall tales of barstool black belts & monkey tongues while tuned-down slide guitar tumbles through the delta landscapes of Faulkner & O'Connor.

Mouthus
Follow This House
PS, US Perhaps appropriately, Follow This House was recorded following a European tour in a state of profound limbic haze and completed and finalized during the unforgettable heat wave of July 2006. These facts make a whole lot of sense since Follow This House sounds like your entire record collection melting in the trunks of a hundred junkyard cars on a hazy, steamy, sweltering hot summer afternoon. Follow This House by Mouthus is a companion piece to their 2005 full length for Important titled The Long Salt. Picking up right where The Long Salt left off, Follow This House is a record chock full of manic bad mood energy, crunching resin-soaked jams and hundred year old instrumentation emerging from the soggy mire only to be slowly pushed back in by poison clouds of delayed-out vocal groan. Mouthus are on a stated mission to incorporate new sounds and new instrumentation into their recordings. Never repeating themselves Follow This House is less fractured and more minimal, embracing the Mouthus sludgefest like a settling foundation.

My Teenage Stride
Ears Like Golden Bats
PS, UK "Ears Like Golden Bats" is the third album by Brooklyn-based My Teenage Stride and the follow-up to 2005's "Major Major" (Becalmed KLECD 103). The heart of My Teenage Stride is multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Jedediah Smith. Jed grew up in Massachusetts and at age 14 started playing guitar, soon adding bass, piano and drums to the mix. As soon as he could steal his older brother's Tascam 4-track, he was writing and recording songs as a one-man band, and by age 18 he had compiled several boxes of tapes and had already written 400 songs. Just over a decade later, he's written hundreds more, with no signs of slowing down. Although previous releases were mainly the work of Jed alone in the studio, many tracks on "Ears Like Golden Bats" have been recorded with the help of a stable band. The current My Teenage Stride line-up is Jedediah Smith instruments, vocals), Jenny Logan (bass), Brett Whitmoyer (drums) and Dakkan Abbe (guitar). At just under 40 minutes, "Ears" gathers a collection of captivating guitar pop gems that manage to combine fatalism with not-yetdefeated hope, which seems to be an inherent quality of many of Smith's compositions. The references to Phil Spector, the Jesus & Mary Chain and Television Personalities are still present in well-crafted and immediate tracks like 'We'll Meet At Emily's', 'That Should Stand For Something' and 'Terror Bends'. They're hookladen songs that will have you humming all day long - you might clap your hands or snap your fingers too. Titles such as 'Reversal' or 'Genie Of New Jersey' and 'To Live And Die In The Airport Lounge' expand on those influences, sounding more atmospheric, reminiscent of the Chills and the pop side of John Cale and Brian Eno. They are catchy in a non-obvious way, loose recordings that let space for moods and ideas to bleed through the album, like the apparent dark tone that seems to permeate 'Reception', the jangly 'Heartless & Cruel' or 'Depression Kicks'.

Odawas
Raven and the White Night
PS, US Like watching an avalanche crushing a Bavarian cottage or a man being attacked by a lion, listening to ODAWAS while nestled safely in your phono-womb is an exercise in tuning into sublime frequencies from safe carriage. That huge dial has never made your hands so child-like, that cookie jar so high. Odawas skirt the cliff's edge like JACK NIETZSCHE hanging Christmas lights on the shark cage, NEIL YOUNG stoking the campfire in his babylon treefort, or a JANDEK aria in a black armband march. Odawas' 2005 debut on JAGJAGUWAR, "The Aether Eater," was a fiery space oddity detailing the brave, the lost, and the maligned. The journey was epic. But the obstinate darkness and disastrous side-effects of space travel are getting lost, and thus turning inward on their follow-up album "Raven And The White Night." This LP package ALSO COMES WITH A GRATIS COMPACT DISC VERSION OF THE ALBUM.

PS, US An amazing debut that is just the first stone of the sonic monolith they're going to build step by step. In this first recording, their musical influences (Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Melvins, Earth, Sleep) get mixed w/ their peculiar perception of the south-spanish religious folklore. Parkins, Zeena
Nightmare Alley (reissue)
PS, US Step right up and meet the astounding ZEENA PARKINS, the world's greatest electric harpist. Forget about angelic choirs; Zeena cites Jimi Hendrix as a major inspiration, and her harp work is similarly explosive, often blurring into fuzz-distorted terrain. Parkins is a lightning bolt of a performer, and a much sought after collaborator; she works frequently with SONIC YOUTH'S THURSTON MOORE, LEE RANALDO and JIM O'ROURKE, has performed with COURTNEY LOVE and YOKO ONO, and has recorded extensively and toured the world several times with Icelanic avant-pop diva BJÖRK. Recorded in 1992, "Nightmare Alley" was Zeena's first solo release and the first CD on TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS. A hypnotic classic, it lures the listener into a parallel world of sensations, one that is disorienting and surreal, strangely pleasurable and more than a little dangerous. Port Royal
Flares
PS, UK The Resonant label's quest to unearth new artists continues with this magnificent, sprawling, widescreen debut from Genoa, Italybased guitar collective Port-Royal. "Flares" is the result of more than two years of home recording, and displays scope and ambition that exudes confidence - almost arrogance - in their own vision and ability. Although "Flares" has much in common with the likes of labelmate Stafraenn Hakon, for example, there's no way you could classify this as simply a post-rock album; Port-Royal utilize understated electronic beats and subtle spoken vocal samples as well as guitars, and have created a body of work with no obvious parallels or comparisons. 'Flares pt.3', track 9 from the album is included on the latest Wire Tapper CD. The Wire Tapper CD is given away free with ALL copies of Wire magazine issue 256 (June 2005). Also featured alongside port-royal are Pajo, Kid606, Juana Molina, Picastro, Junkboy, Ariel Pink etc etc. 20 tracks of new and varied music. Review: "Very much in the Manual school of grand post-rock, Port Royal seem to have a dizzyingly expansive remit that will appeal to anyone bewitched by Sigur Ros, Jonas Munk or even Ulrich Schnauss, fashioning gloriously hued sunset music which positively bursts with aural paroxysms. Encompassing electronica, IDM, post rock and any other stravaig movement you like to mention 'Zoboine' combines the kinetic optimism of Mogwai's 'Rock Action' with Cocteau drums and crackling machine beats into a confection that is neither too sweet nor too bitter. Its just occurred to me yet again what a great label Resonant is and this is a simply fabulous release. Highly Recommended!"

Preston, Billy
Billy's Bag
PS, UK Remember the majestic organ work on The Beatles "Get Back"? That was Billy. Although probably best known through his association with The Beatles, "Billy's Bag" is chance to showcase Mr. Preston as a talent in his own right. Just prior to this release Preston had already made a name for himself as a very fine Piano and Hammond organ player on a number of soul/jazz/r&b albums released in the US . In the UK following tours with Sam Cooke and Little Richard some of Preston's singles made it to these shores and became turn table favourites at the Mod clubs, such as 'In The Midnight Hour' and the self penned title track 'Billy's Bag'.

Prince Valium
Andlaus
PS, UK A debut of sorts on Resonant, from yet another Icelandic artist; Prince Valium put the 'um' in Sk/um, the duo responsible for the fine IDM electronica mini-album "I Thagu Fallsins" in early 2003 (RESCD004), alongside Skurken (the 'sk' half). Working both as a partnership and as individuals since then, "Andlaus" (meaning 'without breath') is the first material from the Sk/um members to see the light of day, so to speak, since the Sk/um release. This sees Valium - 30 year old Thorsteinn Olafsson - take a step back from the Plaid-style playful electronics of old, instead leaning notably towards epic soundscapes utilising both real instruments (guitar being predominant here) and his computer, to create what is ultimately an ambient album in essence. Mostly instrumental - the exception being the breathtaking female vocal-led second track "Crying Hearts " - "Andlaus" is stunning, evocative and overwhelming, with widescreen production that belies its bedroom origins.

Rameses III
Honey Rose
PS, US Rameses III are architects of the most beautiful swathes of blissful ambience whose releases have previously found homes on labels like Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, Music Fellowship, Scarcelight, MYMWLY, Barl Fire and Type. On "Honey Rose", the group's first release for Important, the South London trio builds a bucolic soundtrack to Jon Spira's mysterious short film "Suityman". Whilst the influence of Bruce Langhorne, Boxhead Ensemble and much of the 4AD roster can be keenly felt on this six song EP, so too can the wondrous drone narratives that are such a feature of Rameses III's previous works. More structured and melodious then much of their output, "Honey Rose" is the perfect place for a newcomer to begin exploring the music of one of the finest purveyors of ambient drone operating in music today.

RJD2
The Third Hand
PS, US Catapulted to notoriety, fame, and serious hip-hop credibility with 2002's Dead Ringer LP, Philadelphia based DJ and multi-instrumentalist RJD2 has enjoyed a thoroughly prolific career; following that debut album with 2004's critically acclaimed Since We Last Spoke. For The Third Hand, RJD2 seemingly abandons all the notions and titles that have been placed upon him over the past five years. Underground hip-hop super-producer to some, virtuoso sample-based instrumental wizard to others, RJD2 embodies all of these things on The Third Hand but placates none who seek more of the same. Recorded, performed, arranged, and produced entirely by himself in his basement studio, RJD2 commands his trusty MPC 2000XL sampler/sequencer alongside analog synths, electric pianos and guitars, not to mention his own voice. The result is a cohesive pop album in the most classic sense, a sound more akin to Phoenix than Prefuse 73. In essence, this is RJD2's entrance into the continuum of enigmatic songwriter/producers (see Jon Brion, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder) capable of creating a record full of rich songwriting, complex arrangements, and clever production that transcends genre.

Robins, Marty
Rockin' Robins
PS, UK Marty Robbins was a wildly popular and innovative Arizona-born country singer and guitarist who dominated the Billboard Country charts for 30 years between 1953 and 1983, scoring such chart-topping hits as "Singing The Blues", "A White Sport Coat", "Don't Worry", "Devil Woman" and the epic "El Paso". Robbins even outdid in some ways even Johnny Cash, producing the acclaimed 'concept' albums of Gunfighter Ballads for which he is best remembered. Marty Robbins Joined The Grand Ole Opry in 1953 and hosted his own TV show in the 1970s before dying prematurely in 1982 (aged 57). This compilation concentrates on the brief period between 1954 and 1957 when he took on Elvis and the early rockabillies with some sparkling country rockers which graced a fistful of cool US Columbia 45s and an iconic 10" LP. Tracks include his country covers of Elvis' "That's All Right" (#7 1955), Chuck's "Maybelline" (#9 1955) and his peerless originals of "Singing The Blues" (#1 1956), "I Can't Quit" (#7 1956) and "Knee Deep In The Blues" (#3 1957). And a slew of live outbursts of Rockin' mania you won't believe! As one might expect of a man who not only prefigured Nick Cave but introduced the fuzztone guitar to the pop world (in 1961!) this is seriously rocking stuff....a new discovery for some, and bound to garner some serious column inches!

Sayer, Leo
Just a Boy [Bonus Tracks]
PS, UK The follow up album released to capitalise on Leo's success in 1974. It was preceded by the release of two singles One Man Band (Uk no.6) and Long Tall Glasses (Uk no 4.). The former hit was very much how Leo saw himself at the time as a singer/songwriter, a wandering troubador carrying his songs around with him singing for his supper. Just A Boy was the hook line from the song Giving It All Away which had been written for Roger Daltrey, and which Leo now recorded his own version for this album. Again the album has a similar feel to his debut album, very personal lyrical songs, sung with impassioned vocals and often accompanied by quite sparse yet very melodic piano/guitar backing.

Scary, Bryan
Shedding Tears
PS, US Abounding with hooks, stories, dynamic arrangements & strangely infectious lyrics. Shedding Tears has rightfully garnered comparison to late-period Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd & XTC. 15-track concept album veers from 60s psychedelia to glam rock to chamber pop to prog rock to musical theatre, all smashed together into a uniquely "scary" vision of pop music's potential.

Scott, Peggy & Jo Jo Benson
The Complete SSS International Recordings
PS, UK This pair teamed up after gigging as solo artists around Florida and then signed with producer Shelby Singleton's SSS International label. Their debut record was a smash hit called "Lover's Holiday" which was swiftly followed by "Picking Wild Mountain Berries". The duo were a driving soul act which also boasted a very distinctive electric sitar sound in the backing band. Their impact on the soul scene continued to yield a string of hits through the mid-60s. After the hits they both performed solo again and Peggy Scott-Adams enjoyed a late 90's hit via a TV theme. The duo reunited in 1999 for new LP.

Scruffs, The
Pop Manifesto
US, PS Released 1/16/07 Thirty years after Stephen Burns made his first bid for cult hero status with the Scruffs' debut album, Wanna Meet the Scruffs?, the man stubbornly refuses to give up the power pop ghost, and Pop Manifesto is the third Scruffs album since Burns decamped to Scotland in 1999 and assembled a new version of the band. Those who haven't checked in with Burns since checking out Wanna Meet the Scruffs? years ago may be a bit surprised with the group's latest work; in many respects, Pop Manifesto recalls Burns's short-lived Messenger 45 project, revealing a more baroque tone in the arrangements and a less aggressive attack than in the nervy tone of the group's early sides. The delicate piano, strings, and horn accents on "September's Lost" are a far cry from "You're No Fun," and "What Can I Do for You" almost makes the Left Banke sound like the Nerves. But Burns is still writing terrific songs with glorious melodies and superb hooks, which is the real link between this music and his past, and for good or ill he's still trying to figure out the opposite sex, as "There's a Girl I Know" and "She's Got It for You" amply demonstrate. "Situation Critical" shows he hasn't entirely let his more rollicking side go fallow, either. Pop Manifesto isn't quite the Scruffs as you remember them, but it's a fine and well-crafted visit to smart pop heaven that proves Stephen Burns isn't running out of interesting ideas. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Silmaril
Voyage of Icarus
PS, US Awash in fuzz boxes and acid trips, the dozens of other overlooked groups from the psychedelic era bear little resemblance to SILMARIL. While others buzzed within the hippie epicenters of Haight Street and the Lower East Side, Silmaril formed in haunted, industrial Milwaukee. Other bands might have met at a love-in; Silmaril were friends from a Catholic youth retreat bound together by a doomed figure in the eccentric madman tradition of SYD BARRETT, ROY HARPER and MEL LYMAN by the name of MATTHEW PEREGRINE. "The Voyage of Icarus" captures the dark, mysterious, and achingly beautiful acid folk & Christian themed psychedelic sounds that emanated from 1973's highly collectable privately pressed album, "Given Time... Or the Several Roads," and their dormant, unreleased follow up "No Mirrored Temple."

Smack Dab
S/T
PS, SPAIN Steve Wynn's (Dream Sydicate) new album! Do coincidences happen? If you think about the film "Los amantes del Círculo Polar", you will possibly say yes. And if somebody tells you the story of Smack Dab you will never stop thinking about "Los amantes del Círculo Polar". Perhaps Julio Medem should direct a video for this new band formed by Steve Wynn, Paco Loco and Linda Pitmon. The factual trio of 2006. 2004, a beach in Cadiz, a hot summer day. Out from the water comes Paco Loco, one of the icons of Spanish indie music in the nineties, musician and producer of Australian Blonde, Nacho Vegas, Cosmic Rough Riders and Josh Rouse, among many others. He sees a man sitting on the beach, all dressed in black, boots and coat included! A peculiar guy. Paco doesn't care. He dries himself, puts his glasses on, gets the magazine he brought to the beach to read and... he's amazed. On the cover of the magazine there is a photograph of the guy who sits next to him, the one who dresses in black and reads a novel by George Pelícanos. It's Steve Wynn, the leader of The Dream Syndicate and Gütterball, the star of classic underground rock of the last twenty years! That very moment, a woman emerges from the water and lays on the towel beside Steve. It's Linda Pitmon, his girlfriend, drummer of Golden Smog and of Wynn's backing band (The Miracle 3). It's a tiny world. Paco wants to say hello. But in 2004 he doesn't speak English yet. Luckily, or coincidentally, Steve speaks some broken Spanish. They meet for lunch. A friendship is born and from that friendship comes the idea of recording an album between the three of them. It was the kind of recording session made for pleasure and fun. With no business yearning. Two weeks of experimenting and jamming in a relaxed mood. A year and a half passed, and Steve and Linda threw a party. Coincidentally they played these songs. It was a riot. Everybody danced, everybody congratulated them, it was clear to everybody that they had to release the album. They kept an ace up their sleeve and it had been accumulating dust for a year! Straight away, they rang John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Kills) for him to do the mixing. And he's done an a-m-a-z-i-n-g job. Each song in the album works in an individual way. From one of them, California says hello with narcotic fuzz face, in another one it's New York's mirror ball and disco sound, before we get assaulted by an almost sweet soul music cover of Three Dog Nit's "Never Been To Spain". A song that climbed to number one in the US charts in the early seventies. Curiously enough (or should we say coincidentally?) the first record Steve Wynn bought in his life was "It Ain't Easy", by this Californian band. "Smack Dab" is a driving and emphatic album, one that connects with the spirit of comradeship that was unique of the Los Angeles scene in the early eighties. This comradeship allows the main characters to let themselves go, be it to twist their style guide or to do the same old thing. Whether they knock us out in a surprising way or with well-known weapons, you will always find them relaxed and daring. An example of the first would be "I'm Not Listening": even though Wynn has always placed himself on the crossroads run by the feedback guitar flow of the Velvet Underground, it's always regarding to see how he jumps into a new pool and puts Lou Reed on the dance floor. On the second, "My Cross To Bear": you feel you're back in 1993 again, in front of Gütterball, the super-group leaded by Steve that gave high-intensity garage rock a good name. In short: 1) Mr. Wynn shows, (again!) why The Strokes should hire him as their Classic Underground Rock instructor. He knows how to draw life from each record, there is life after that debut, boys! 2) Paco Loco has managed to rise to the occasion; 3) the sticks and percussion of Linda Pitmon make the guitars dance, shooting them with an intravenous rhythm in the hips. In short again: It wouldn't be fair to say that this is just an attractive quirk record. Because it's one of the best recordings in the careers of these three artists, and that is saying enough. Even though, like we said before, it all happened by coincidence, like so many of the great lovers' stories.

Small Sails
Similar Anniversaries
PS, US Small Sails is a music and film making collective from Portland, Oregon. The music is a gorgeous post-electronic tribal thing and the films are performed live at their shows using original reel-to-reel footage and dual projectors. A field of dandelions plowed over, inner-city kids jumping double-dutch in gritty streets, birds and waterfalls, playground vocals, clicky electronics and warm, spacey melodies - that's what Small Sails looks and sounds like. Small Sails are a busy bunch - having toured extensively - performing almost 100 shows in North America in 2006. They're deeply loved in Portland, where they've shared the stage with kindred souls such as Deerhoof, Styrofoam, The Helio Sequence, Her Space Holiday and Mice Parade. Their new music is different, too: chanting, humming vocals hint at tangibility while remaining half-submerged; rhythms are a baby-bouncing jumble of eclectic percussion and twittering electronics; and achingly gorgeous melodies get stripped down to the still-gleaming bone. To experience Small Sails' live show is to become immersed in a seemingly unparalleled rhythm and energy. The visual and sonic interplay are hypnotic and their on-stage chemistry and fluidity are nothing short of warm and inviting. Through their unique, multi-faceted coaxing of the senses, they create an environment that commands undivided attention and adoration. Reviews for Small Sails: Fans of like-minded souls the Books and Prefuse 73 will find cuddly tunes here, as the pastel-hued instrumentals float by with breezy ease. - San Francisco Weekly Small Sails is a full-on pop machine with half-chanted vocals over tight percussion, bass-heavy beats, and micro-condensed indiepop riffs. - Portland Mercury. The words are sparse and nonsensical, but somehow such ambiguity is what helps make Small Sails so compelling, both on record and in person. - San Francisco Bay Guardian Small Sails sounds at once instantly familiar and strangely foreign. - Ithaca Times.

Sneaky Thieves
Accidents
PS, US Sneaky Thieves are a Seattle-based band that formed in 2003, comprised of two loving sets of brothers and a good friend; Robert Bale (bass/samples), Freddy Bale (vocals/acoustic guitar/keys), Darby McDevitt (electric guitar/keys), Brendan McDevitt (drums) and Bryant Moore (electric guitar/keys). Live, they juxtapose many sounds, flashing from abrasive and clashing, to mellow and heartfelt. Influenced by many of life's pretty things, they construct music incidentally and without undue stress. Their debut release, accident(s), was recorded after a car wreck settlement came many years too late to do any real good. So, a small, tidy amount of money was set aside and used to create an album with local producer Jeramy Koepping (founding member of Voyager One, producer for Asahi, Jen Wood, Kinski) in the lovely Park Place Studio. This record is the essence of those sad, peculiar moments of a life disjointed. The tracks on accident(s) are based on recurring themes that appear very often in dreams and nightmares. Many refer to struggles with substance abuse, addiction, and vague recollections of difficult histories. Ultimately, this album is a musical response to the constant loose ends of life - trying to sonically replicate the "bellyache" in the middle of the night. Praise for accident(s): "A thoughtful and minimalist epic indie charmer..." - Treblezine "Think of the feeling you get when alone and awake late at night you start to ponder the inevitability of your own death and your helplessness to stop it. The fear. The chill. Moments on this album capture that feeling perfectly, especially with headphones. In fact, the Sneaky Thieves are extremely gifted at capturing and even more so at creating moods and emotion." - Spacelab. RIYL: Nick Cave, Will Oldham, Bedhead, Talk Talk. "Thumbs up" - CMJ New Music Monthly. "Sneaky Thieves slide from a Jeremy Enigk melancholy to a Jeff Buckley grace, sometimes with a Sparklehorse inventiveness, and still manage to keep a grasp on a consistent theme through to the end." - The Big Takeover.

Souvenir
64
PS, SPAIN "64" is the fourth album by Spanish band Souvenir and it has already been described as their most adventurous yet. Nevertheless, their new record is coherent with their approach to music throughout their career. Again, Patricia de la Fuente and Jaime Cristóbal show their skill for adapting a variety of influences and creating something brilliant. This time, their surprising new stylistic twist has taken them straight onto the dancefloor. "64" is basically a dance music album. "64" integrates elements from the past 30 years of electronic and dance music (techno-pop, new wave, 80's dance music) and combines them with the band's very personal language. The result is a collection of dance hits packed with memorable melodies which are brilliantly guided by Patricia's beautiful vocals and Jaime's surf guitars. As usual, the record's basic premise is interspersed with eclectic elements from various sources. Souvenir are anything but purists, therefore their vision of dance music is an unorthodox one. For instance, it seems ironic that their most techno-pop record features so much guitar playing, ranging from crunchy rock to surf. The result of this combination (synths and drumboxes with 60's guitars) is an exciting and original collection of songs, and Souvenir's most passionate record so far, with echoes of the sound of classic synthesizer such as the Prophet 5, Moog, Korg Poly-Six. "64" is also Souvenir's return to pop, as it features their most catchy, immediate tunes in years, in the tradition of The Human League, Blondie, Etienne Daho, Visage, Pet Shop Boys or Mylène Farmer, but also with a more contemporary resonance that links the band to artists like Ladytron, The Raveonettes, Vive la Fête, or Saint Etienne.

"From the chopped-up electro-glitch micro-symphony opening the record through the way it exercises restraint in bringing in the horn section until the EP just cant cling to life for another second without it, [Falls] is a record that practically typifies what it means to sound painstaking." -Stylus Magazine

SRC
Black Sheep
PS, UK Detroit, Michigan in the late 1960's played host to a rock explosion of talent with, at the top of the pile, the MC5 and their rivals the SRC. Rising at the same time as the Stooges, Grandfunk Railroad, Bob Seger and the Amboy Dukes. The SRC - standing for Scott Richards Case - Scoot Richardson being the lead singer, began, like the MC5, by playing their version of UK R&B, before supplanting their own take on the music, characterising it with doomy organ, anglicised vocals and searing bursts of stun-guitar drenched in sustained feedback. "Black Sheep" is the definitive collection taken from across the SRC catalogue of three albums and six singles, as originally recorded for Capitol in 1968 and 1969. For fans of the 60's US rock scene, already into the Stooges and MC5, the SRC are important addition to their collection.

ST
People I Know
PS, US ST brings his debut LP to Music Related. Robust & sharp beats, supported by warm and degraded synth tones & melodies. The feel of long winters, and the longer nights in Sweden fill the album. Recalling both, nights in love, and the days spent alone. "People I Barely Know" is almost a literal view of the creation of this album. Everyone who work on this album, from ST, the vocalist, label, visual artist. have never actually met. Everyone is someplace else, and contributed from their own separate worlds. Brought together by STs music, and this album. STs album recalls fellow Sweden native's "Radio Dept.", but with "I Am Robot And Proud" synth style production. Will surely will appeal to any fan of Styrofoam and current Morr Music output. "People I Barely Know" is a warm cup of tea in the surrounding blizzard of out lives.

Stafraenn Hakon
Ventill/Poki
PS, UK After two full-lengths on Resonant, the much-lauded Stafraenn Hakon is about to step up proceedings with this, his first new material in two years. - on the back of the success and acclaim that met the aforementioned Skvettir Edik a Ref (RESCD005 - 2003) and I Astaandi Rjupunnar (RESCD006 - 2004), both of which were 'old' albums deservedly seeing light of day for the first time beyond his native Iceland. Whereas those two were effectively home recordings using basic instruments and means, Ventill/Poki is the end result of a week in a studio in England with the help of fellow Resonant artist Dialect, using live bass and drums sounding like the product of a band rather than one guy. That said, crucially it retains the 'feel' of his previous work, and is more potent and powerful rather than allowing anything to get lost in the mix. Coming on like a hybrid of Labradford, Sigur Ros and Mogwai and finishing up with one of the finest bodies of work within the ambient/post-rock sub-genre in years, this album seems certain to elevate Olafur Josephsson's musical alias in the esteemed company of his most obvious peers in terms of status. Stooges
Fun House (Deluxe Edition)
PS, US The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar); Dave Alexander (bass); Scott Asheton (drums). Additional personnel: Steven Mackay (tenor saxophone). Recorded at Elektra Sound Recorders, Los Angeles, California. FUN HOUSE sounds like an extended, guttural war-cry from deep within Iggy Stooge's (now Pop's) psyche. It lurches through a canvas of writhing rock'n'roll imagery--the Stooges' own "Heart Of Darkness"--going deeper and deeper into the numbed seen-it-all glaze of a culture fresh from a visit to Altamont and the scene of the Manson murders. While their debut, THE STOOGES, focused on rifforama and teen-angst, FUNHOUSE found their sound grown-up and meaner. Steve MacKay's wailing air-raid saxophone added a razor-edged shine to their previously thuggish exterior. Certainly harder in content and sound, FUN HOUSE's muddied production adds to its relentless in-your-face primalism. "Dirt," "L.A. Blues," and "1970" are proof alone that Iggy's id-like subject matter and persona--matched by the band's growling, tearing sound--would set the pace for rock's edgier aggression for generations to come.

This Is Your Captain Speaking
Storyboard
PS, UK Full release of an album that has been subject to overwhelming praise worldwide as a result of the initial pressing on the band's own label last year. Within the seven tracks of sprawling, intelligent, complex, emotive and thoroughly engaging post-rock totalling over an hour minutes on "Storyboard", the band have produced a staggering debut album, with a widescreen, epic and ultimately very powerful end product that belies their inexperience - the strength being the sensational interplay between the guitars, layered over the drums, with occasional appearances from the xylophone and even a typewriter. That said, the term 'post-rock' does the band a disservice, as they avoid many of the cliches associated with purveyors of the style and instead display an ability to compose 'songs' that unravel over time while never needing to resort to distortion or the quiet/loud stereotype often employed. The album is self-produced, and was recorded in the library of a primary school. This Is Your Captain Speaking are a threepiece that hail from Melbourne, Australia, and this first opus promises a great deal. PS, UK Picked up by Shel Talmy around 1964 as a Georgie Fame styled mod band, he produced two singles which were leased to Parlophone and Stateside before issuing the next two on his own Planet label. The Fame styled organ driven beat with Mose Allison type vocals is something that is very strong in todays Mod club circles. At the time it didn't bring the hits so Talmys production company under the famous Glyn Johns injected a harder guitar edge into the Untamed s sound. Sadly the hits didn't come but the group stirred up a lot of interest in the Uk and abroad at the time.

Psychedelic Phinland
PS, FINLAND Subtitled: Finnish Hippie & Underground Music 1967-1974. Mostly amazing collection of underground Finnish music, presented in definitive fashion by the original Love Records label (there's a schmaltz/theatrical element on Disc 1 just to keep you on your toes). Great booklet of English notes and photos, Love Records does it again! Features Sperm, Baby Grandmothers, Suomen Talvisota, Pekka Airaksinen, J.O. Mallander, and a bunch of others. From the liner notes: "CD1 opens with some topical commentaries on drugs and the hippie lifestyle, as well as with early Finnish psych-rock, followed by more agitatory and provocatory stuff like Suomen Talvisofta who hilariously combined anarchist ideas with psychedelic imagery. After the heyday of he Underground movement, the more mystic legacy of hippiedome was preserved by the esoteric balladry of Pekka Streng, Hector and others. CD2 presents more experimental Underground, avant-garde and laternative music, most of it for the fist time on CD or previously not issued. Love Records and the small Eteenpain! (Forward), Finland's counterpart to ESP Records, were the main labels for the kind of music heard on both CDs."

94 Baker Street: The Pop-Psych Sounds of the Apple Era: 1967-1969
PS, UK In the greater context of sixties pop history, "94 Baker Street" may not have the same cachet as "The Brill Building" or even "Denmark Street," but it was from that building - on the corner of Baker and Paddington in London - where some of the most exciting English pop and psych sounds of 1967 and 1968 originated. It was from 94 Baker Street that the Beatles launched their Apple organisation, starting with Apple Music Publishing, which opened for business at Baker Street in September 1967. Over the course of two years, Apple Publishing would nurture the careers of artists such as Focal Point, Grapefruit, the Iveys (who would evolve into Badfinger) and Tony Hill (of Misunderstood and later High Tide), all included here. The highlights of those heady pop psych days are captured on this unique CD collection. Compiled and noted by the author of the book Those Were The Days (the history of the Beatles Apple Organisation), Stefan Granados, the package includes exclusive photos and artist interviews. There are also some exclusive tracks to this package such as the previously unreleased demos and alt. takes of the Focal Point, the McCartney produced Grapefruit, and the Iveys. Wrapped up in a sumptuous RPM poster inlay what more could a collector want?

Laughin' At The Blues
PS, UK A hilarious and scurrilous collection of R&B and comedy like you've never heard! I guess most of these artists need no introduction; I'm sure you know all about Scatman Crothers (star of The Shining and er...Hong Kong Fuey), Redd Foxx, the outrageous Rudy Ray Moore, Slim Gaillard, Sammy Davis, Moms Mabley and Pearl Bailey. Dusty Fletcher was the originator of the enduring international success "Open The Door, Richard!" (and a #2 Billboard R&B hit in 1947 for him). The Spirits Of Rhythm included comedians George "Blues Man" Vann and the seminal Leo "Scat" Watson. Al Jackson had been half of the hilarious Patterson & Jackson comedy team. Little Arthur Matthews had been the "Dope" half of the popular West Coast comedians "Mope & Dope". He later joined Johnny Otis' R&B revue as a singer/comedian. Otis and his band back Matthews on these two sides. Her signature piece, comedienne Effie Smith had a national R&B hit in 1965 with a recut of the two-part "Dial That Telephone", recorded originally for Aladdin in 1953: this two-parter is the 1956 first expanded re-recording for her own Spot Records. She discovered rock 'n' roll act Don & Dewey and her son was Los Angeles producer/song-writer Fred Sledge Smith of Bob & Earl, and The Olympics fame. Both of them worked at Stax until the label closed down. All round entertainer, Sammy Davis Jr had by 1949 made a big name for himself as part of the Will Mastin Trio with his uncle and father and was signed to Capitol Records, there he recorded fine straight ballads.... in addition to producing parodies of the R&B sounds of the day under the pseudonyms Charlie Green and Shorty Muggins.- A must for serious R&B fans....and anyone with a sense of humor! Bauhaus Reviewed 1919-1933
PS, UK 19 tracks. LTM are proud the present the first audio book CD to explore the highly influential Bauhaus school of art and architecture, which operated in Germany between 1919 and 1933. The spoken word element centers on a revealing talk by Walter Gropius, the architect and theoretician who founded the Bauhaus in 1919. The CD also includes contributions from the school's third and final director, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and teacher Josef Albers. All interviews are in the English language. The music content of the CD features piano pieces written between 1919 and 1925 by six composers associated with the Bauhaus: Arnold Schoenberg, Josef Matthias Hauer, George Antheil, Stefan Wolpe and H.H. Stuckenschmidt. Several of these pieces reflect surrealism and 12-tone technique; Steffen Schleiermacher performs most on piano. With a generous running time of 72 minutes, the CD also features a deluxe booklet featuring archive Bauhaus images and detailed historical notes by James Hayward.

Velcro Stars, The
Hiroshima's Revenge
PS, US I can hardly wipe the smile off my face as I listen to The Velcro Stars. Their mid-90's Chapel Hill, NC-esque sound is enveloping my person as I type this. It's certainly one of the most exciting things going on in the revitalized (and...pssssssst.....quite "hip") Murfreesboro/Nashville, TN independent music scene along with How I Became The Bomb, Ghostfinger, and The Turncoats. Initially comprised of Shane Spresser (guitar/vocals) and Keith Pratt (guitar/vocals), they began writing songs together after high school. They were joined in 2001 by Rebekah Kidd (keyboards/vocals). Danial Norman was a high school acquaintance and joined them as their bassist in 2001. After going through several drummers, Andy Spore filled the position and began playing with them in 2005. "The Velcro Stars are one of the most interesting, original, and level-headed bands to come out of Murfreesboro in a long time. Their songs are simplistic and well arranged, and bring with them hints of Pavement, Blake Babies, and Superchunk." (nashvillezine.com) Enter Grand Palace Records. Grand Palace is an independent record store in Murfreesboro, TN. It's also a loft space that houses a recording studio and screen-printing shop. Owned and operated by Murfreesboro music scene luminaries, they decided to capitalize on the revitalized scene by recording some of their favorites (Velcros included). Thus, Grand Palace Records (the label) began. "Hiroshima's Revenge" is the first full-length to be released on Grand Palace Records (a joint co-release with much help and support from Athens, GA's Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records, who became smitten with the band after their show-stopping performance at the 2006 Athens Popfest). With the recording of "Hiroshima's Revenge", the Velcros finally make good on the promise of the "Heart Disease / Shock and Awe" Demo as well as their self-titled 7-track EP from 2005. This album is a pleasant reminder of the pure joy, immediacy, and lack of pretension that's at the heart of all great three-chord rock and roll. Songs such as "Brand New" and "B-Side of Love" will make you scream with pure delight as you dance around your living room to the pop-tastic codas contained within. "Ninety-nine percent of pop I hate", says Shane Spresser, "but that one percent is my favorite music in the world". Welcome to that one percent... RIYL: Pavement, Superchunk, Bunnygrunt.

Villalobos, Gina
Miles Away
PS, US Gina's nothing if not dead serious. Her music is deeply rooted in time, place, and history. She's the real thing: an artist, someone who can show you where you are. Hailed as the new "Queen of Country Rock" and seemingly out of nowhere. Gina has rapidly established a growing cult following in the UK and the US for her infectious, raw, simply irresistible, roots rock influenced songs. Knowing when to whisper and when to unleash, she finesses words into new meaning with the slightest inflection. And for her live performances, where her willingness to expose herself completely takes her audience's out of the moment, to a place up above the chaos, alone with their thoughts. Eventually nothing else exists...it is a truly transcendent experience. Though she's been knocking around the music business since the mid 90's, it wasn't until she released her critically acclaimed 'Rock N Roll Pony' in 2005 that Gina made that all important international breakthrough, with an endorsement from BBC radio 2 DJ Bob Harris - making the record a must have commodity. Avoiding the sophomore jinx, Gina's second offering succeeds. She unveiled her new album 'Miles Away' in the UK on May 8th 2006 to the same, if not more enthusiastic, critical plaudits, and support from BBC radio 2 her acclaimed predecessor, Rock N Roll Pony received. This along with a 6 week US national tour supporting World Party sets the stage for her upcoming US release of 'Miles Away', which is widely anticipated in the Americana/Alt Country circles in which she first gained attention.

PS, US He is an established name in electroacoustic sound experimentation, having collaborated w/ artists, musicians & choreographers incl.Pauline Oliveros, Nam June Paik, Eder Santos, Scanner, etc. This piece is a work in progress evolving from the numerous recordings made of the sculptures of American artist Donald Judd (1928-1994) in Marfa, TX. High-precision microphones are placed directly on the surface of Judd's "specific objects," which capture a subtle combination of sounds resonating through the artwork, as well as ambient sounds.

PS, US Wolf & Cub are four young men from Adelaide, Australia who make adrenalized, darkly psychedelic and danceable noise. Propelled by two drummers and lifted aloft by Joel Byrne's wall of guitar noise, the band quickly found themselves attracting attention in Australia. Rolling Stone tagged them as "ones to watch" early on, and in the first year of their existence Wolf & Cub toured with Queens of the Stone Age (at the request of Josh Homme himself) and TV On The Radio.

Alsace Lorraine
Dark One (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 5TH )(ON SALE)
PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator. Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark", was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St. Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully, Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together. Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun during college on the south side of Chicago and completed it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings four of the best songs on the album, but she also made important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music. We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.

Angel Sánchez Borges also records as Seekers Who Are Lovers on the Soundsister label. Baby Grandmothers
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH)
PS, SWEDEN Baby Grandmothers were a short-lived Swedish band, but one of the most prolific and unique psychedelic, modal, experimental power-trios to emerge out of the Scandinavian psychedelic underground scene in 1967. Although hailing from Stockholm, Sweden they only released a single in Finland, which has since become one of the most sought-after pieces of vinyl from the era. Baby Grandmothers were formed out of the legendary R&B/beat band T-Boones in the summer of 1967. T-Boones are probably best known for their "At The Club/King Of The Orient" single which is one of the best, and most collectable of the Swedish garage beat era. Guitar-wiz Kenny Håkansson joined the band in 1965 and with the group down to a trio they drifted into the psychedelic sounds of the time and in August 1967 released the single "I Want You," which definitely was the first hard-rock recording ever made in Sweden. The band was then re-christened Baby Grandmothers by the co-founder of the newly opened psychedelic club Filips, for which he needed a house-band. Filips was the legendary breeding ground for bands such as Hansson & Karlsson, Pärson Sound, as well as orgiastic all-night jams with foreign luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers of Invention. Baby Grandmothers also supported Jimi Hendrix on his Swedish tour in 1968 and then turned into Mecki Mark Men, who became the first Swedish rock band to tour the U.S. Founding member Kenny Håkansson went on to form the highly influential Kebnekajse, who created the Swedish electric psych-folk sound. This unique collection presents live recordings made at Filips, their impossibly rare single and a rare live recording made in Finland. Painstakingly collected and researched by Dungen's guitarist Reine Fiske. 16-page booklet included.

The Neubauten found the steel skeleton of the ruins of the Palast a congenial location for their architectural-musical fantasies and field studies. Accompanied by a 100 member choir, recruited from the supporters of the www.neubauten.org Internet project, they played in and with the building in their inimitable, almost literally building-collapsing fashion. Evripisis And His Tragedies
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 20TH)
PS, US This is the first sign that Evripidis and His Tragedies are a truly unique band and have developed their own style. In Evripidis' song writing there is space for pre-Beatles pop as heard on "Ru Ru I'd love to...", to the sinister and grotesque "Transylvania, Some nights are sleepless" and "Cause I shall rise again", the picaresque cabaret "Red is the sky above the harbour" and romanticism "I want to be there", "Long-Lasting Lovers" or "Straydog" and also singles as "It's June Again!" and "Gregory (we're coming out in the light)". Conceptually, Evripidis use polarity (reality and fantasy, romanticism and sexual tension, self-parody and idealisation, catastrophe and comedy) to create a work guided by humour and his flirtation with daily tragicomedies. The result is an album that is personal, daring, original and ambitious.

Future Conditional
We Don't Just Disappear (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 3RD)
PS, UK Future Conditional is the all-new electro-pop project from Piano Magic mainstays Glen Johnson and Cedric Pin. Drawing inspiration from classic analog synth-pop by the likes of New Order, Kraftwerk, OMD and Section 25, the album We Don't Just Disappear updates the retro-futurist mix with a stellar selection of guest vocalists, including Melanie Pain (Nouvelle Vague), Bobby Wratten
(Field Mice/Trembling Blue Stars), Angele David-Guillou (Klima/Piano Magic), Carolyn Allen (The Wake) and Dan Matz (Windsor for the Derby). The 10-track album was produced by Glen and Cedric in 2006. Standout tracks include Switchboard Girl (sung by Melanie), Broken Robots (sung by Angele) and the title track, featuring Bobby. "Future Conditional isn't just an exercise in nostalgia. We are, in some way paying homage to the groups we love and inspire us, but we're also experimenting with the glacial electro/human emotional interface. The future is a robot with a human heart." (Glen Johnson). Piano Magic will release their new album Part-Monster in May 2007, and featured vocalist Angele will release an album as Klima on Peacefrog in March. Windsor for the Derby contributed to the soundtrack of the latest Sofia Coppola film Marie Antoinette, and Trembling Blue Stars also release a new album in spring 2007. Busy people!

Giant Skyflower Band
Blood of the Sunworm During (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 13TH)
PS, US During a sabbatical from regular duties in THE SKYGREEN LEOPARDS, Glenn Donaldson (never one to rest) dreamt of Giant Skyflower Band, an exotic, flowery and crumbling new recording project with nods to fruity new age, psych, prog, folk, and pop songwriting. Donaldson quickly invited multi-instrumentalist Shayde Sartin to "smoke marijuana & make up strange pop songs," and thus the band was born. With Gong's seminal "Magick Brother" as a starting point and a sitar close at hand, the duo created a dark, peregrine pop transmission from their shoddy analog recording studio in San Francisco. The duos debut offering examines in detail the idiom of Bummer Psych; the strain of damaged Anglo-pop music pioneered by Syd Barrett that arguably reached its apex with The Television Personalities "Painted Word" LP in the mid-80s, but found new life in Japan via the genius of Tori Kudo and like- minded acts such as Nagisa Ni Te and Tenniscoats. Indeed, "Blood of the Sunworm" consists of depressing pop songs and damaged instrumentals - teeth bared and falling apart as they are cobbled together - on a hazy, cryptic journey through a busted kaleidoscope, behind a dusty mirror & up through the rafters.

Hearts Of Black Science
The Ghost You Left Behind (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 27TH)
PS, UK From Gothenburg, Sweden comes the latest Scandinavian pop phenomenon Hearts of Black Science. Formed by Daniel Änghede and Tomas Almgren, Hearts of Black Science set up a studio within an abandoned subterranean power plant outside Gothenburg. Isolated from the outside world, they experimented and developed their sound - melancholic and dark pop melodies, yet also uplifting and positive, not afraid to be inspired by a broad range of styles, gothic and metal, shoegaze and eighties pop. In 2006 the band released an two EPs that sold out in just 2 months, and got over 100,000 hits on MySpace. 'The Ghost You Left Behind' is the glorious culmination of those months of isolation - this collection of songs is all that's great about Scandinavian pop, sounding completely fresh. References: mixing up a bit of Doves, some Ladytron, a smattering of Mew and maybe M83 would be a good start, but there's a darker side as well, Depeche Mode covered by Air, or The Killers covered by Ulrich Schnauss.

Lewis, Wyndham
The Enemy Speaks (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2ND)
PS, UK The first CD audiobook of readings by Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), the influential British modernist writer, artist and self-styled 'Enemy' feted both by T.S. Eliot and Mark E. Smith. Lewis is best known as the founder in 1914 of the celebrated Vorticist art movement, an English variant of Italian Futurism. Publication of their journal Blast was interrupted by WW1, after which Lewis the artist pursued a parallel career as a writer of fiction, satire and criticism. Lewis spent the war years 1939-45 in penniless exile in America , yet carried on writing even after going blind in 1951. His many books include Tarr (1918), The Apes of God (1930), Blasting & Bombardiering (1937), The Revenge for Love (1937) and the trilogy The Human Age. His artworks include Workshop (1913), A Battery Shelled (1919), Tyro (1920) Red Portrait (1937), The Surrender of Barcelona (1937) and Portrait of T.S. Eliot (1938), and are regularly exhibited by galleries including the Tate, Hayward, Imperial War Museum and others. The Enemy Speaks gathers together rare broadcast recordings made by Lewis in 1938, 1947 and 1951 on various subjects in art and politics, as well as readings of three poems from One-Way Song, recorded at Harvard in 1940. The CD also features a dramatized extract from his Bloomsbury-baiting satire The Apes of God, recorded in 1951 with an introduction by the critic V.S. Pritchett. The CD closes with the recording of Sympathy that so vexed Lieutenant Lewis in his dug-out near Ypres in 1917. The CD features a deluxe booklet featuring archive Lewis images as well as historical notes by James Hayward. The CD has been prepared with the full co-operation of the Wyndham Lewis Memorial Trust.

Lindt, Virna
Play/Record (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 8TH)
PS, UK The first release on CD of 'Play/Record', the second album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organization in 1985. Written and produced by Virna Lindt during a three-week holiday in London, Play/Record tackles girls who cannot stand the colour red, the numbing effect of the new media, and subterfuge and skulduggery in her adopted home town (the single My Home Town). The album has been digitally remastered by close collaborator Tot Taylor, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. Unfortunately Virna abandoned music forever after creating Play/Record, leaving the world a poorer place. Contemporary reviews for Play/Record: "Ms Lindt deftly conveys a sense of breezy, delirious Sixties camp. Arch instrumentals such as the title track and Add It Up are nothing short of wondrous, and the album is a delightful and accurate evocation of a period when music was allowed to be fun" (Melody Maker); "A uniquely crafted voiceover masterpiece, the diverse tempo moves from the sunny waft of single My Home Town to the more sombre tones of Any Colour But Red" (Sounds); "Lush, intelligent and very, very sexy" (Underground). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and liner/recording notes.

Written and produced by Virna Lindt and Tot Taylor, the acclaimed Shiver album offers 12 slices of chic, Cold War pop informed by 1960s spy thriller soundtracks and musique concrete, including the singles Attention Stockholm and I Experienced Love. The album has been digitally remixed and re-modelled from the original mastertapes, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. The new edition of Shiver also features bonus track The Windmills of Your Mind, a rare Michel Legrand cover version from The Thomas Crown Affair originally recorded for the Crepuscule movie compilation Moving Soundtracks. Contemporary reviews for Shiver:"Intrepid undercover agent disguised as a top international fashion model sets out on a secret mission behind the Iron Curtain, armed only with a firm sense of fair play and a gadget-filled powder compact" (NME); "Euro-eccentric. Virna Lindt casts herself as a mysterious blonde in a loving pastiche of Continental movie music" (Sounds); "Only the surly amongst you can fail to acknowledge the splendour of Virna Lindt's new single I Experienced Love, and the equally thrilling Shiver lp, the epitome of Compact's sleek, chic Sixties tease" (The Face); "Imagine a pastiche of all those old Sixties spy series, like Danger Man, The Avengers and The Man From Uncle. Well, this would be the perfect soundtrack to go with it" (London Evening Standard). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and detailed dossier on Virna Lindt. Lament for Children (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 13TH)
PS, US Ritchie Youngs solo recording project. EP complies live performances from 2003-2006, ranging from Young by himself to a ten-person band. During this time, many different recording sessions took place in various studios & homes. "The hopeless tone in Ritchie Youngs voice tells of a terrible life of unfortunate circumstances. Even the old Scottish folk song from which Loch Lomond takes its name is the story of a broken heart & the springtime weather that does nothing to heal it. It works, though, because Youngs voice-with its gloomy, morose manner-needs the subhuman relief that noise readily provides. Ultimately it is a record wallowing in its own despair as much as it is a record that took great, inspired care to make-and its definitely a record to avoid after a breakup." -Rolling Stone

Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love
Ends of June (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 3rd)
PS, US Initially intended as musical outlet for Kelly Dyson, Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love's full inception came in the form of a sudden, unplanned collaboration between Kelly and vocalist Natalia Brightmore. Instant musical chemistry coupled with a brief period of writing & recording yielded a complete body of bittersweet, forthright folk songs, self-released on the band's own Birds and Rodents label (UK) in 2004. Two years later, after randomly stumbling upon some breathtaking Low Low clips online, Portland, OR label Other Electricities realized there was something unique brewing overseas. The band with the impossibly long name occupied space in their ears and repeated listens only further reinforced the fascination. The two parties eventually got to talking and came to the conclusion that this music needed to reach a wider audience; these sounds just couldn't be slept on much longer. Ends of June is Low Low's second outing and first U.S. release, boasting twelve new, intimate tracks saturated in the same undeniable warmth and familiarity offered on their debut. Here, the music's immediacy and accessibility fails to wane even slightly, building upon the solid groundwork laid in the first album. Natalia's amicable departure and a change in line-up, currently featuring Kelly Dyson (guitar, lead vocals), Ellis Dyson (drums, clarinet, percussion), Chris Robinson (guitar, vocals), Hugo Edwardes (bass), Nick Guy (vocals, percussion), and Brian Lutchmiah (vocals, percussion), has filled out Low Low now more of a band then an "acoustic folk duo". Despite these alterations, no element of overall sound is compromised as new paths are traversed with regards to instrumentation and arrangement. Self recorded and produced in Ellis' bedroom studio, Ends of June showcases Low Low's progressive and deft grasp on songwriting. From the pensive yet infectious "The Way You Play," to the fluid lullaby "Happiness at the New Day," it's near-impossible to deny the resultant intrigue of each composition, and of the record as a whole. These songs beckon to be taken in again and again... Collectively, the band members live and work in and around Manchester, England. To date, they have shared stages with the likes of Regina Spektor and Six Organs of Admittance. Plans are currently being made for a re-master/reissue of Low Low's s/t debut, which
should be available in wider release mid-2007. For Fans Of: Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Six Organs of Admittance, Nick Drake Songs of Green Pheasant.

Orchids
Good To Be a Stranger (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 13TH)
PS, SPAIN The enigmatic five piece band formed in Glasgow have released some of the finest pop songs of their generation since humble beginnings in Penilee, a suburb of the city, where the three founder members grew up and started the band in 1986. Their first six singles and three albums were met with widespread critical acclaim, much of this from out-with the UK. They graduated from the gentle lo-fi craft of their first album, Lyceum, in 1989 ("A minor classic - don't let is pass you by" said NME) through to the ground breaking and progressive sounds of their third, aptly titled, Striving For The Lazy Perfection ("lithe, evocative and memorable music" - M M) in 1994 with "sixth member" Ian Carmichael of One Dove at the studio controls. In the intervening years they released Unholy Soul in 1991 ("Sarah Records answer to the Beach Boys Pet Sounds") and some truly original singles & EPs that, in keeping with a stance sometimes perceived as awkward and single minded, were always kept apart from album projects. The ethos was always more about value for money for their fans than genuine stubbornness, however. The singles included what many believe to be the high point of their career to date, Something For The Longing as well as final single Thaumaturgy in 1993. Reformed in 2004 after a break of Paddy McAloon proportions they are now ready to take another swipe at the tedious world of the music business with an album that takes them back to their musical roots. Recorded at Riverside Studios, home to other better known homegrown acts such as Travis, Teenage Fanclub and Trash Can Sinatras, their new record Good To Be A Stranger is a fabulous collection of new songs that will feed the hungry appetite of the fan base that has grown over the intervening years. Ahead of their time in the early 90's, it is only now that many have realised how fascinating and mature those earlier releases were. Good To Be A Stranger is released on Madrid based label Siesta on --- March 2007 and the band will be heading out to play live gigs for the first time in twelve years to promote the new release - nothing like keeping your fans waiting! Offers of gigs in the UK, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Singapore and the USA illustrate how the World Wide Web has allowed their global reputation to grow. Later in 2007, a cover of The Go Betweens' song Magic In Here will also appear on a Grant McLennan tribute album, Love Goes On, released on USA's Rare Victory Records. You can also currently hear one of the new songs Down To The Ocean on Siesta Records compilation Erre Que Erre. "The best Scottish pop band since Orange Juice" - Melody Maker "A blissful mix of the best Scottish bands of the last few years" - NME" "Eclectic. Every single song is a gem" - Exclaim "Luxuriant textures, immaculate pop fizz with enviable purpose" - MM "Songs of emotional wit and sparkling indie pop" - All Music Guide "Languid and alluring" - Tangents "The tension between wanting to wig out and grow more evanescent is evident" - Uncut "They brought together all the best parts of the 80's Scottish music scene, while adding something that's hard to pin down, yet made them so very special" - Exclaim!

Paley, Tom
Beware Young Ladies! (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 20TH)
PS, SWEDEN New recordings from underground folk legend Tom Paley, with special guest Bert Deivert, recorded in Sweden in early 2006. Tom has been recordings since the 50s! Tom Paley was born and raised in NYC, where he first fell in love with old-time music. He began playing guitar and 5-string banjo and quickly excelled at both instruments. He briefly performed in a duo with the great folk musician Woody Guthrie in the late 50s. Later he helped form The New Lost City Ramblers, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen. This group inspired a greater mainstream interest in traditional music. The Ramblers considered their live concerts primarily as opportunities to share great old songs they had discovered with their fellow folk performers. After The Ramblers broke up Paley formed The Old Reliable String Band (with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose). Tom moved to Sweden, where he lived from 1963 to 1965, before moving to England where he has resided ever since. Tom continues to tour in America and Europe both solo and with other musicians.

Panther
Secret Lawns (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 13TH)
PS, US Charlie is Panther, and Panther is some mutant form of Charlie Salas-Humara. Churning out shattered pop hits that few have the ears to comprehend, Portland, Oregon's Panther is a one-man disaster squad. The music is hard match of damaged soul, falsetto disco and broken synth fueled freakouts which is as addictive as it is challenging. Panther isn't easily ignored for his unpredictable and energetic solo performances tainted with throbbing bass, minimalistic hooks and jittery dance routines. Panther's influences run deep and take as much from Pop and R&B as Free Jazz and Punk. In the past year Panther has infiltrated MTV2 (up for Video of the Year), Spin Magazine, and modern dance academia. While touring with both Ratatat and Gossip, he has managed to polarize audiences thoroughly between the immediate super-fans and super confused gawkers. Panther's live performance is as much dance as it is music, and as much art as it is performance. Secret Lawns is the eagerly anticipated full-length follow up from last year's Yourself 12" and you'll discover that Panther knows no boundaries, not only in terms of genre but also social and societal. Panther recorded and played most of the instruments himself, excluding guest accompaniments from members of Yacht, White Rainbow, Plants, Point Line Plane, and E*Rock. Revutsky, Roman
Incomplete (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 13TH)
PS, MEXICO Roman Revutsky possesses a genuine sensibility of pop that stands either way over sad structured rock or complex electronic music sequences. Roman is a singer/songwriter who, directly from the four walls of his house in freezing Siberia, still has the warmth to keep his tender heart alive, pumping strange stories told by a soft and charming voice that will hardly be unnoticed. With a naïve attitude, Revutsky fills the gap nineties indietronica left between rock and electronic music: earnestness and reality. Though his music doesn't properly fit in that genre, Roman will probably enchant enthusiast followers of this kind of pop music with his awkwardly hypnotic lyrics. "The tracks he has recorded and made available are irresistibly charming (his voice, prominantely accented, is reserved but strangely moving, like a Siberian Stephin Merritt), and though its impossible to be sure of how his album will sound once completed, I have a hard time imagining it being anything less than stellar." Rough Bunnies
Weisse Westen, Dreck Am Stecken (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED TO 200. I once saw an interview with the members of Nirvana talking about when they toured with Shonen Knife and would cry every night while they watched their set out of sheer joy and unrivaled beauty. I didn't think much about it or even try to understand that feeling until my band played a festival in Sweden last year and the Rough Bunnies played right before us. Hailing from Malmo, this duo (with occasional guests) encapsulates a sense of innocence, joy, confusion and real youth style feelings and communicates them in a way so honestly it's hard to look away, whether or not you like the music. All the elements of ameturish-yet-immediate songwriting and musicianship that go into the songs of the Rough Bunnies could illicit comparisons to bands that came before with a similar vibe; the Velvet Underground, Beat Happening, the Vaselines, Moldy Peaches, Shonen Knife, et al.. but paying attention and really getting to know the group, you come to understand that they're not just another band that SOUNDS like those lifechanging, unsung, widely overlooked and underrated groups, nor are they trying to coyly mimic that feeling. The Rough Bunnies are the next band on that page of history, a beautiful and amazing, if dog-eared and tea stained page. This LP is their first, following three extremely limited CDRs available only in Sweden.

Satie, Erik
Cubist Works 1913-1924 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 8TH)
PS, UK A new CD in our series by visionary French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925), following the success of previous releases Vexations, Socrate, Musique de la Rose + Croix and Dada Works, on which we present selected Satie recordings with explicit links to the unconventional, the mystic and the avant-garde. Cubist Works offers four works composed by Satie between 1913 and 1924 for his collaborations with the artist Pablo Picasso. These include piano and orchestral versions of his scores for the celebrated 'Cubist' ballets Parade (1917) and Mercure (1924), as well as the seldom-heard organ 'diversion', The Statue Found (1923). The 60 minute CD also includes The Puppets Are Dancing, written for the French Futurist dancer and poet Valentine de Saint-Point in 1913, and the ludic Trois Valses distinguées du précieux dégouté ('Three Disgustingly Precious Waltzes'), a barbed swipe at rival composer Maurice Ravel and premiered at an exhibition of works by Picasso, Matisse and others in 1916. The solo piano works on this CD are performed by Bojan Gorisek. The booklet includes archive images and detailed liner notes by James Hayward.

Sunken
Trawler (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 13TH)
PS, US Ambitious second album from Kiwis inhabiting opposite ends of New Zealand's North Island, the distance giving a physical sense of space to the duo's spatial, glacial formations. Not unlike a warm golden calm in the midst of winter's brutal tempest, Sunken's collection of haunting, highly textured, buzzing compositions offer security in their encompassing presence. With the aide of ridiculously amplified electric fan-powered organs, intercoms and voice (augmented with whatever instruments that happen to be within reach at the time), Sunken create swampy yet joyous sounds comparable to The Skaters, Grouper and the Double Leopards family of sound. Melodies appear and disappear into the mélange, while the duo channel the spirit of the sea shanty, seeking to lose themselves in the howling ecstasies of 'the drone.'

Venetian Snares
Pink+Green (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 3RD)
PS, CANADA Venetian Snares, aka Gonk the 8-legged Viking, is back with yet another record that sounds nothing like Boards of Canada! From the catchy title track opener "Pink + Green" which blends demented punk vocals with hyper-complex grooves and gut gurgling bass blasts you can just tell this is something fresh and funky from producer Aaron "funk" Funk. Not to worry though the sub-rattling low-end blasts and jackhammering hardcore anthems are still here and in full effect on tracks like "Sporto Fucking Sellout Cocksuckerface" and "Husikam Rave Dojo" that revisit the days of pilled out candy raving. This is cyberpunk at it's finest! Welcome to the interzone! 15 year old K-heads will love this shit! If you hated albums like Winnipeg is a Frozen Shithole and Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits 1972-2006, you will hate this even more! Voyces, The
Kissing Like It's Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 24TH)
PS, US After one listen to The Voyces Planting Seeds Records' debut -"Kissing Like It's Love" - and you'll be hooked to their glowing tuneful style. The band echoes the sounds of pop music's past as well as its ever so fervent future. Principal songwriter Brian Wurschum creates the well crafted pop song, recalling the mid 60's era of The Beatles, the folk rock of Simon & Garfunkel, and the 70's mini rock epics ala Pink Floyd. Their style maybe placed in a box and labeled anywhere from: Rock, Folk Rock, Acoustic Folk Rock, New York Folk, and everywhere in between. The sunny California shine of the title track "Kissing Like It's Love" launches the groups long awaited LP with it's sugary sweet chorus. The soft ballad "Hair Up High" follows with its elegant smooth guitar strums and the band's signature harmonies. The majestic beauty of "Call It Home" continues the album's melodic element, while the introspective acoustic interlude "Please Wash Away" appears with its stripped down heartfelt vocals, acoustic guitar and light piano taps. "Humming" chimes in with one of the catchiest refrains you'll hear this decade - instantly memorable. "Top Of My Lungs," showcases even more of the Wurschum magic: Jangly guitars, soaring harmonies, and a song destined to be a classic. The album's closing number - the delicate "Where The Little Girls Still Throw Roses," features Brian's warm vocal, light guitar picking and makes for the perfect ending. Whether blending funky pop, epic rockers or near psychedelia, "Kissing Like It's Love" collects ten tracks of pure pop heaven you're sure to fall for. The Voyces are led by singer/songwriter Brian Wurschum (Guitar, Vocals) and also features Jude Kastle (Vocals), Frank Careno (Bass), Steve Dawson (Lead Guitar) and Eric Puente (Drums). The band was formed in 1999, with its origins in Southern California. Brian and company later moved east to New York City and was quickly embraced by the east villages' anti-folk scene. The Voyces have shared stages with acts as diverse as America, Cracker, and Regina Spektor among countless others - while frequenting venues (both in California and New York) such as the famed Whiskey A-Go-Go, The Troubadour, The Bowery Ballroom, The Mercury Lounge, The Knitting Factory and The Roxy. Live dates are sure to follow in support of "Kissing Like It's Love." The Voyces have created an impressive catalog of music. Their first self released LP, 2003's "The Angels Of Fun" showcased their fine blend of folk rock and celestial harmonies. The acoustic gem "Relate To Me" was featured on Jack Johnson's Motion Picture Soundtrack, "Thicker Than Water" (2003) furthering the groups worldwide fan base. They followed in 2004 with an appearance on Planting Seeds Records critically acclaimed collection "Sunsets And Silhouettes," which also features amazing performances from Linda Draper, Camera Obscura, Mark Gardener (Ride) and Freeheat (Jim Reid and Ben Lurie of The Jesus & Mary Chain) among the 18 tracks. In 2006 the band contributed the song "Poor Little Fool" to a loving tribute to rock legend and country rock pioneer Rick Nelson, titled "Easy To Be Free: The Songs of Rick Nelson" - with performances from pop Icons Marshall Crenshaw, Jeffrey Foskett (Beach Boys, Brian Wilson), John Beland (Flying Burrito Brothers), Nic Dalton (The Lemonheads), John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), The Primary 5 (ex Teenage Fanclub) and many more. The band also released "Love Arcade" in 2006 - a collection of the bands hits, demos, and fan favorites.

Painted Sky (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 13TH)
PS, UK A debut on Resonant from a man with a wealth of back catalogue on labels such as Enraptured, Darla, Bearos, Ochre, Awkward Silence and many, many more, spanning almost a decade. Yellow 6 is the solo project of Jon Attwood, a guitarist based in Leicestershire (the first UK-based artist to release an album on Resonant!) who has released six full length albums, five live albums and one remix album, on top of several mini-albums and EPs, singles and contributions to numerous compilations. Painted Sky was recorded between 2004 and 2006, and strips away many of the layers of previous outings, resulting in a collection of melodic, organic guitar and piano soundscapes backed with subtle percussion. More ambient than post rock, Painted Sky draws comparisons to Labradford, Cocteau Twins, Durutti Column, Slowdive, Windy & Carl and Erik Satie, as opposed to the quiet/loud exponents; this is quiet/quiet, with an overall air of wistful melancholy. The previous releases of Yellow 6 have established a solid following, both in terms of fanbase and press.
