Parasol New Arrivals • April 03, 2007

Welcome back friends,

Well, we would like to start things off by tell you, our friends, that Paul and I are extremely tired. You see, we’re old and not too long ago we joined a very active rock band. As of late, we keep landing the headlining (latest) slot on most of the shows that we have been booked to play. This is fine and all but since we’ve been slowly slipping into our golden years, loading gear down the haunted stairwell into the basement at 3:00 A.M. can really take a toll on our aching, old bones not to mention waking up at 6:00 in the morning to make the children breakfast. But hey, that’s what we’ve been doing for well over 10 years and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

In other news, we actually did receive an email from our beloved Parasol mascot, Oh Sheila. We’re happy to report that she is fine even though she was evicted from these old walls. Get us on a tangent and we can go for days.

We’re excited to announce that we have received the new album from The Chrysler titled, The Benelux Years and are your ears ever in for a treat! Also, definitely check out the new Throbbing Gristle, Scharpling & Wurster, RJD2, and the new offering from The Rosebuds.

With that said, we will now bid you a fond farewell until next Tuesday.

With love,

Roy & Paul

Moonbabies "At The Ballroom" CD $9.00 (A Hidden Agenda Record)
Swedish duo Moonbabies' brand new new album, Moonbabies At The Ballroom, will be officially released by our own Hidden Agenda label in late May, but you get it early (and often). Ola and Carina (have donned spacesuits) and taken the dreamy electro-pop alchemy of their 2004 Hidden Agenda debut The Orange Billboard and the dramatic evolution represented by 2005's War On Sound Mini Album and made good on every sonic promise made... The new album contains the track "War On Sound" (which first appeared on the War On Sound Mini-Album, that was featured on popular US TV show "Grey's Anatomy" as well as the Grey's Anatomy Vol. 2 CD collection), plus 10 new songs, the best of their career. Visit the Moonbabies At The Ballroom release page for loads more info.

Jim's Pick: Best New Music from Scandinavia

The Chrysler "The Benelux Years" CD $14.00 (Flora & Fauna/Idiot Wind)
I’m not trying to confuse you, promise… But by the time I have a Chrysler album scheduled for U.S. release on our Scandi-only Galaxy Gramophone label it’s a good bet they’ve gone and released another album in Sweden. So back in 2005 when we released Failures And Sparks here in North America The Chryslermen promptly delivered their second album Cold War Classic in Scandinavia. Now it’s 2007, I’ve got an expanded version of Cold War Classic rolling out to the Stateside masses this month and The Chrysler’s brand new masterpiece, The Benelux Years, arrives! Like clockwork I tell you! Not like I'm going to wait for me to put it out here, and neither should you... Housed in a handsome matte digipak, here are the latest chapters of The Chryslernovella: more (and more magical) mysterioso pop, subliminal psychedelia, and crackling bonfire-folk conflagrations. Truly rich in melancholy, harmonies, and pastoral dynamics. So new that I’ve only heard it a couple times…enough to know that The Chrysler remains one of my most cherished bands on the planet. Sound samples on the frontpage, even more on my Jim's Pick pages: Click here for more of the best new Nordic music.

Abruptum
Evil Genius
PS, US Formed in 1989 by IT and All. IT had planned to create the band already in 1987 but it wasn't until 1990 that he found the right member to do The same year, they recorded their first two demos. There are a multitude of myths surrounding this cult act. The band further became legendary due to the fact that IT was one of the leaders within what was called the Satanic Black Circle. IT left the scene completely after several events within the circle & threats to him & his family.

Axolotl
Memory Theater
PS, US Memory Theater is an absolutely essential collection of the best of Axolotl's out of print cdrs and vinyl only releases. Baffler
#17
PS, US What a difference a few years make. It wasn't so long ago that Americans thought they had learned a hard lesson about "irrational exuberance." But on the party went. Expensive military adventures abroad, a Ponzi economy at home, the largest asset bubble in human history . . . all topped off with a massive transfer of national wealth to you-know-who. We're going to have fun paying for this. In this issue, Thomas Frank explains how the mushy tenets of "bipartisanship" add up to rule by a class of people whose only clear interests are their own. Tom Geoghegan surveys the wasteland that American jurisprudence has become. Kim Phillips-Fein examines poker mania, and unearths clues to lumpen America's dashed aspirations. Steve Evans reveals why American poetry is now run by Midwestern ad men dreaming of corncribs and the big Nebraska sky. Andrew O'Hagan (his novel "Our Fathers" was shortlisted for the Booker Prize a few years ago) remembers the last days of an American literary giant. Catherine Liu tells you why the debt-driven, service-oriented urbanity of your funky downtown isn't such a good thing for you.

Bang Gang
Something Wrong
PS, US Icelandic dreamscape rockers recall their farflung Scandinavians cousins The Perishers (guitars and grand arrangements) and Leopold (piano and persuasive choruses), trading some of that pair's outright heartbreak and traditional melancholy for straight up indie pop alacrity. With the addition of female vocalists the band there are hints of AK-Momo and The Tiny. PLAYBACK: "The epic orchestration and lonely reverberations of Bang Gang's 2007 re-release, Something Wrong, melt mellow pop notions into mesmerizing grandiosity. Enlisting the help of the other half of Lady and the Bird, Keren Ann, as well as guest vocalists Nicolette and Phoebe Tolmer, Johannsson says the soft things out loud. Those things that haunt, contradict, and elicit dark, unknown beauty rise to the surface... Bang Gang reveals that there is pleasant splendor when uncertainty is understood and followed."

Bears
Self-Titled
PS, US Bears has been described by You Ain't No Picasso as a record that "recalls the tenderness of twee, the poeticism of Morrissey and the pop stylings of many of the bands on Matinée"-but that's only part of the story. And while the group shares an affinity for acts like Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura, their music is pure unbridled pop, in the best possible way. Catchy, carefree and, most importantly, free of any indie pretension.

Bears
Shortest Day Of The Year
PS, US Brand spankin new 7-song EP. Where the first album was sunny and carefree, the Shortest Day Of The Year EP from Bears is obscured by clouds. The pop band from Cleveland has recorded a 7 song EP using slightly darker melodies and lyrics and, at times, minimal instrumentation. Maybe it was the Ohio winter that put them in this mood, or maybe it was the need to change something from the early songs, but the Shortest Day Of The Year EP takes the trademark Bears sound and adds something a little more personal, though not immediately identifiable.

Cadence Weapon
Breaking Kayfabe
PS, US VINYL VERSION!!! Every now and again, a hip hop artist emerges and threatens to take the music from its growing commercial context, back to its essence. Enter 20-year-old rapper/producer CADENCE WEAPON (aka ROLLIE PEMBERTON) hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, son of a Brooklyn DJ, nephew of a funk musician, and child of fresh music. Following massive grassroots support for his independent mixtape, Cadence Weapon Is the Black Hand (2005), Pemberton returns with a more focused sound on Breaking Kayfabe. Breaking Kayfabe is an impossibly accomplished hip hop album with clever songwriting and impressive rhymes paired with the electro-tones of UK grime and West Coast hip hop. Cadence Weapon is developing into a producer and in demand-remix work includes LADY SOVEREIGN, DISCO D, COKE MACHINE GLOW, and STYLUS.

Centro-Matic
Operation Motorcide EP
PS, SPAIN Will Johnson's problem is not a creative drought. He never stops composing. But then he has to decide to which one of his projects each song will go: Centro-Matic, South San Gabriel or his solo albums. He says that thinking about it for a long time can make him consider eliminating a song. After deciding that he is going to shelve one, he gets uptight. He wonders what would have happened with that song he dismissed, if it would have given more strength to his records, or if a hit has been lost on the way. With "Fort Recovery" his muse visited him and left the tap of inspiration on. Even though the final work ended up being a long record (the European version even includes three extra tracks which are not on the American one), some really significant compositions were rejected. The trickiest problem was dismissing songs. Listen to these eight tracks from those sessions and, if you don't mind me asking, which ones wouldn't you have left out?

Comfies, The
Close To Me
US, PS 10/06 release
The Comfies don't quite have the frantic energy of the Killers but seem to have a smart, highbrow pop sense about them along the lines of Velvet Crush and Matthew Sweet. This is particularly true judging by the short but sweet opener "Close to Me" that has a warm, California summer feeling to it. Lead singer and chief songwriter Benjamin Adam Harper slows things down somewhat for the winding, jangle-tinged "That's What She Gets" that brings to mind the likes of the Byrds and early Tom Petty. And the group allow the song to be fleshed out thanks to the work of guitarist Rafael Cevallos..." ~ Jason MacNeil, All Music Guide

Copy
Hair Guitar
PS, US Last year, COPY (who's known as Marius Libman to friends and family) proved that geography isn't everything. Because while Europe and the East Coast once monopolized the modern electro-house sound, Portland now lays claim to its own innovator who has taken the genre to new and unexpected places. His debut, Mobius Beard (Audio Dregs), displayed a knack for morphing headphone-friendly synthpop with floor shaking dance music (...or wait, is it the other way around?) that tore up stereos and clubs throughout the city of Portland and beyond. After a year-long string of legendary, sweatsoaked live sets that invetably erupted into epic dance parties, COPY was voted "Best New Band" by the Willamette Week, solidifying his place as a rising star within the local music scene. Outside of Portland, his infectious brand of instrumental dance music made fans of the likes of Tim Sweeney (DFA), Lovefoxxx (CSS) and countless DJs, audiophiles, hipsters and music nerds alike, who found his style undeniable; somewhere between Ratatat, Timbaland, and MSTRKRFT. And with the release of his notorious "Diva Mixtape Vol.1" under the guise of DJ COPY, new life was breathed into the likes of Mariah Carey and TLC, turning mid-90s RnB jams into triumphant, upbeat bangers that snuck their way into the hearts of many unsuspecting listeners who weren't exactly expecting to roll down the windows and pump their brakes to Whitney Houston this side of the millenium.

Dyrdin
S/T
PS, US Dyrdin, Reykjavik, Iceland. There are only 300,000 people who live in Iceland, 80% believe in elves. Dýrðin brings the mythologies of elves, comic book heroes and Star Trek to life with their edgy pop. Dýrðin was formed in Reykjavik in 1994 by Einar and Maggi, having both played in various underground rock groups for a few years, teamed up with Þorvaldur Gröndal, to produce silly little pop songs, with a twist, in Maggi's bedroom. They got hold of a Dr. Rhythm drum machine and an old saggy keyboard and started churning out tunes on a Tascam 4-track Portastudio. Einar's sister was hastily recruited to sing. Hafdis surprised everyone by suddenly displaying singing talent and a knack for rocking out on stage. After a brief hiatus, they re back on the scene playing locally at the Iceland Airwaves festival, Innupukinn and recently at Popfest! New England in Northampton, MA. The drum machine has been dismissed in favor of a real live punk drummer named Tóti, who also plays in the legendary Icelandic punk band, Vonbrigdi. Vonbrigdi are a recently resurrected punk band who were at the forefront of the punk wave along with such bands as Purrkur Pillnikk (featuring Einar Orn of Sugarcube fame), Fraebblarnir, the glue-sniffing Sjalfsfroun, and Bjork's band Tappi Tikarrass. In a departure from bass, guitar and keyboards, the band has now reached new heights with a full, five member line-up, in both live performances and recording. From the Icelandic music magazine, Grapevine: This is a band I ve had the pleasure of seeing on many occasions, and have watched them grow. Dýrðin s driving, New Wave pop is well-served by a formidable drummer, who can be best described as a hard-hitting psycho. They carried their numbers across so well that before long they started playing their songs faster than usual & Dýrðin finished their set with the singer and keyboardist dancing continuously, the crowd elated& RIYL: The Icicles, All Girl Summer Fun Band, The Sugarcubes, The Cardigans, Buzzcocks, The Ramones, Blonde Redhead, The Raveonettes, Serge Gainsbourg.

Future Conditional
We Don't Just Disappear (ON SALE)
PS, UK Future Conditional is the all-new electro-pop project from Piano Magic mainstays Glen Johnson and Cedric Pin. Drawing inspiration from classic analog synth-pop by the likes of New Order, Kraftwerk, OMD and Section 25, the album We Don't Just Disappear updates the retro-futurist mix with a stellar selection of guest vocalists, including Melanie Pain (Nouvelle Vague), Bobby Wratten (Field Mice/Trembling Blue Stars), Angele David-Guillou (Klima/Piano Magic), Carolyn Allen (The Wake) and Dan Matz (Windsor for the Derby). The 10-track album was produced by Glen and Cedric in 2006. Standout tracks include Switchboard Girl (sung by Melanie), Broken Robots (sung by Angele) and the title track, featuring Bobby. "Future Conditional isn't just an exercise in nostalgia. We are, in some way paying homage to the groups we love and inspire us, but we're also experimenting with the glacial electro/human emotional interface. The future is a robot with a human heart." (Glen Johnson). Piano Magic will release their new album Part-Monster in May 2007, and featured vocalist Angele will release an album as Klima on Peacefrog in March. Windsor for the Derby contributed to the soundtrack of the latest Sofia Coppola film Marie Antoinette, and Trembling Blue Stars also release a new album in spring 2007. Busy people!

Kinetic Stereokids
Basement Kids
PS, US Hailing from Flint, Michigan, KSK have created a buzz that has emanated from Detroit landing them gigs alongside the likes of ...And you will know us by the trail of the dead, Secret Machines, Explosions in the Sky, & Wolf Eyes. Like medieval folk songs strutting alongside driving hip-hop & rock beats, layers of delay-laden guitar melodies mix w/ noisy static & self-help tape loops to create a vast wash of psychedelic melody & funk. Add vocals ranging from breathy, emotional philosophizing to nonsense-raps to complete the sound: pop songs gone far astray. The record is inspired by Mexico City's great '60s garage & rockabilly madmen as well as by the great border rock of Freddy Fender. With production by Rosas throughout, the Straitjackets hard-edged twin guitar onslaught drives propulsive rockers like 'De Dia y de Noche' (The Kinks' 'All Day and All of the Night') as well as tender ballads like 'Tu Te Vas' (Barbara Lynn's 'You'll Lose a Good Thing')

Mellowmen
Tomorrow's Sound Today
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Listening to Tomorrow's Sound Today, it's clear that while these guys are intimately familiar with all 25 volumes of Rhino's Have a Nice Day series, mere mimicry is not on their minds. As a result, '70s pop lifts like the George Harrison-like slide guitar solo on "Justify My Madness" or the pure bubblegum bounce of the gloriously tuneful "Sunshine Shell" are applied to otherwise up-to-the-minute indie tunes. One subtle but important distinction is that the Mellowmen don't try to come off as the second coming of the Beach Boys vocally: since the days of Jellyfish, too many retro-minded pop bands have tried to pull off elaborate vocal harmonies that they don't have the chops to accomplish or the imagination to properly arrange. Throughout Tomorrow's Sound Today, keyboardist Andreas Nyberg covers nearly all of the vocals himself; the rather weedy vocal harmony tag at the end of "My Dove" shows the wisdom of this decision. The press kit for Tomorrow's Sound Today lists a dozen acts from Ladytron (not so much) to 10cc (quite, especially the early Graham Gouldman era) as influences (the vibraphone and pedal steel parts on the utterly lovely closing acoustic ballad "Here Am I" suggest that the High Llamas could have been the 13th), but the key quote comes from the head of their label, who compares the Mellowmen to the unjustly ignored '90s power pop act the Sneetches. Those who remember the pride of the Bay Area will see the wisdom of this comparison on the first listen to Tomorrow's Sound Today: these laid-back but unfailingly catchy tunes casually plunder pop's back pages without making a fetish of their finds." Merzbow
Merzbear
PS, US Author, activist, painter and sound artist Masami Akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psycedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especially Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, Masami Akita has created a musical language all his own. Merzbear is the sixth Merzbow release in his utterly essential Merz series for Important Records. Merzbear pulses and pounds with distorted droning heavy guitar feedback, pulsing noise-blasts and swirling analog sounds of Akita's distinct EMS Sythi. Like most of Merzbow's recordings, Merzbear is a significant document of his ever evolving improvisational style. Slowly, he's been moving away from his pure laptop era and reincorporating elements of his pre-laptop analog days w/ his homemade junk guitar, EMS Synthi & electronics. This hybrid sound brings the past into the present and pounds with total junk-collage Dada urgency as only Masami Akita can do it. Cover art by Jenny Akita.

Merzbow/Carlos Giffoni/Jim O'Rourke
Electric Dress
PS, US Electric Dress covers the full spectrum of sound color possibility, from totally brutal walls of destructive noise to beautiful minimal synthetic interplay, analog drone and shifting alien electronics. A total mind melting collaboration recorded live in tokyo using synths and a variety of custom analog equipment, even including Merzbow's classic spring/junk metal instrument. Warm, varied, and obsessive this is what industrial music should have been, the sound of infinite machines demolishing a planet and creating a new structure where live organisms have been eradicated. Edited and mastered by Jim for maximum sonic annihilation. Documents one of nowadays very rare Merzbow's all analog live shows, one of Jim O'Rourke's rare live appearances since his move to Japan and the culmination of Carlos Giffoni's Japan Synth Destruction Tour. All this at the same time! 100% Essential! Electric Dress is recommended for fans of analog period Merzbow, early noise and Industrial Music, academic electronic and analog synth music-And for those adepts of beautiful and invigorating evil music.

album exudes the acrid stench of decay & emptiness that should be inherent of Black/Death metal.

Moya, Raul
La Nueva Era Glacier
PS, SPAIN It is said that the Anglo-Saxons carry their memory in their hearts. And it seems that Raül Moya (who plays with élena, Miqui Puig, Sitcom, Romodance and Refree) has gone there to recover the memories which bring his solo debut to life. That is because "La Nueva Era Glaciar" sounds as if it had been made with his heart and memories. It also sounds Anglo-Saxon due to the dragging-tempo of his confessional folk-rock. However, the fact that the album is written in Spanish (and really well) and that it gets a Latin-Mediterranean touch by using accordions, toy percussions, and so on, moves him away from the Anglo cliché. From that cliché and from any other. This is a very personal album. The more you listen to it the more you cannot avoid comparing him with the Andrés Calamaro of "Honestidad Brutal": both albums share a lack of emotional reserve and have fed themselves with legends, but without being trapped inside caricature. Here you have more suspicions that Raül and Andrés have lived parallel lives: Raül has spent lots of hours looking at the sea, as near as possible to his so beloved Buenos Aires, and when he looks deep inside of him he finds the same as Andrés does, that is Bob Dylan. The album starts with an harmonica. That is reminiscent of "Come Pick Me Up", from the album "Heartbreaker" by Ryan Adams, which is another confessional ode. And there are more connections with that record: the guitar in "Rían Con Sentido" flickers just like Ryan's in "My Winding Wheel". That is not a coincidence. "Heartbreaker" and "Honestidad Brutal" are like swells for Raül and lighthouses for the seafarer who goes deeper into the album "La Nueva Era Glaciar". These are dangerous comparisons, but we make them. That is because we are not before a shy musician who looks at his feet, we are introducing you to someone who knows how to defend some lyrics that echo words that burn on your lips: "you", "forever", "life", "to go back". Promotional reserve tempt us not to say that this debut is a very especial album. But we say so. We know that writing something like "of course they are not precisely the same" next to the proper nouns and other albums that have been mentioned in this text, would have been a kind of defensive detail. And voluntarily we have not included any: with these songs we cannot be that fussy.

Rylan, Jessica
Interior Designs
PS, US Jessica Rylan (you may know her better as Can't) is finally releasing her first officially published instrumental work for synthesizer. Titled Interior Designs, these compositions are more "classic" in nature than her work as Can't. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Iannis Xenakis and especially Thomas Lehn, Rylan confidently takes her place among these monumental artists with this collection of strikingly original pieces recorded on a Serge Modular as well as analog synthesizers Rylan built herself. Jessica Rylan is a sound artist and electronic musician who lives and works in the Boston area. She builds unique synthesizers for installations and live performance. Her designs are influenced by plants, and the historically outmoded. Her music incorporates the intuition of folk music with the techniques of the avant-garde. Rylan was featured in the PBS documentary Greater Boston Arts in March, 2003. She has created sound installations at the List Visual Arts Center at MIT, the Boston Center for the Arts, Harvard University, and the Berwick Research Institute. She earned an MFA in electronic music from Bard College and has received grants from the Penny McCall Foundation and the LEF Foundation. She is currently a Research Affiliate at MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies. Rylan has performed across the United States, Eastern Canada, Scandinavia, and Western Europe. Highlights included Moscow, Oslo, Lisbon, Antwerp, London, Chicago, L.A., and New York City. She has performed with with Thurston Moore, Wolf Eyes, Lightning Bolt, Emil Beaulieau, Prurient, Hrvatski, Magik Markers, Mouthus, Tim Barnes, Charalambides, Amps for Christ, Chris Corsano.

Stefana, Alessandro
Poste E Telegraffi
Ps, US Poste E Telegrafi is the debut solo album from Italian guitarist Allesandro Stefana. Featuring an allstar cast including Mark Ribot & Leo Abrahams, Stefana creates a dreamy world of instrumental perfection and beauty. Inspired by the work of Ennio Morricone, Ry Cooder, Simon Jeffes, Steve Reich and Brian Eno, he has created a thoroughly modern Western world within his compositions and arrangements. With constant references to traditional music and rural blues he utilizes electric and acoustic instrumentation with tremendously compelling results. Acoustic, electric, and pedal steel guitars along with banjo, kalimba, baliphones and found objects were all carefully combined with some primitive electronic instruments such as an arpeggiator, omnichord and home made vinyl loops. His sound is entirely original yet clearly rooted in traditions such as Film Music, Blues, Experimental, Ambient and Avante Garde musics. Stefana manages his cast of collaborators very well. Most tracks on Poste E Telegrafi are duets with these musicians keeping the sound and arrangement simple and pure. Instruments breathe and pulse with life and excitement in this highly original album. To call this a "promising debut" would be to dismiss the tremendous success delivered by Poste E Telegrafi.

Alsace Lorraine
Dark One (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 8TH) (ON SALE)
PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator. Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark", was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St. Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully, Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together. Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun during college on the south side of Chicago and completed it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings four of the best songs on the album, but she also made important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music. We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.

Angel Sánchez Borges also records as Seekers Who Are Lovers on the Soundsister label. In a recent interview on URB Magazine, Borges says his secret to the AAM sound is his love for "My Bloody Valentine, a gentle way of dealing with strange layers of sounds. Asa Irons & Swaan Miller
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 24TH)
PS, US This record is forever. After listending to it you'll realise that it doesn't matter that Asa Irons plays in Witch with J Mascis as well as the acclaimed folk outfit Feathers. This record needs no associations and it's songs are so timeless that they feel as if they've been passed around for generations and hardly need any recording medium at all. This is the first release from Asa Irons and Swann Miller but it sounds like they've lived within each others voices for a million years. Asa's deep-breath-voice lays down a mossy hill for Swann's beautiful voice to tread upon. His guitar work is simply intricate and his fingerpicking perfectly suits the way their voices combine to become one. This record always has been and always will be. This record is forever. "After spending years in New Hampshire and often Nova Scotia, I began writing songs about my Northeastern window through which I view the world. Most of the pieces represent strong fundamentals in my life such as living without comfort resources like electricity and running water, the building trends of carpentry and masonry with which I make my living, and the slow paced rural life in which I grew up. The land of Northeastern North America is very important to me and compelled me to describe it in the form of music. Many people in my life were musicians - my father, cousins, friends - so I had plenty of good examples to pull from and think about. My style of song writing, I believe, comes from the influence of these loved ones combined with certain deep-rooted melodies or images from books that have stuck with me. (Such as sound tracks of old cinema and authors like Tolstoy and Carolyn Chute.) My older sister's art work has also had a tremendous effect on the way I see the world. Many of her primary subjects revolve around various representations of our own home place and the people who inhabited this and the other woods houses in which we grew up. One of the people connected to me through music and lifestyle is Swann Miller. She is the daughter of a man who was a good friend of my father's. Through the '70's our fathers built houses together around N.H. and also played a lot of music. So, I have known Swann my whole life and perhaps it was inevitable that we made music together. When I reached her house in the winter of 2003, I had just had my notebook of songs stolen along with other things. I decided to try to catalogue all I could remember by practicing them. Swann practiced with me. On a whim, her boyfriend - who works as a sound engineer - recorded the two of us singing in an abandoned yellow women's bathroom in the basement of the building where they lived. It all took about an hour and a half including set up of mics, recording, and breaking down. I borrowed a twenty year old Guild guitar from a friend of a friend which was very similar to my father's guitar that I grew up with. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to help capture Swann's beautiful voice and continue the music of our families. The album is a quick glimpse of a world view from Southern New Hampshire through the voices of two old friends whose fathers were friends before them." Asa Irons

PS, US Their hooky keyboard driven power-pop has been drawing ravenous fans everywhere they play. Often compared to power pop bands likeThe Only Ones, The Wildhearts & The Records, the band is everything great about being young, geeky & American: adictively hooky, powerful, flagrantly irresponsible three-chord pop songs, loud guitars & new-wave keyboards, & a whole lot of jumping around.

Brown, Steven
Brown Plays Tenco + Live 1988 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 29TH)
PS, UK Steven Brown is a core member of cult avant garde band Tuxedomoon. As a solo artist he has recorded some ten solo albums, including Music For Solo Piano (1983), Searching For Contact (1987), Half Out (1991), Nine Rain (1996) and Decade (2003). Brown Plays Tenco was recorded in Italy in 1987 and features Steven's own interpretations of five songs written by cult artist Luigi Tenco. Born in Cassine in 1938, Tenco scored many hits as a singer in Italy during the 1960s, but shot himself through the head at the San Remo Festival in 1967 after Ciao amore ciao (Hello, Love, Hello), failed to reach the final. The suicide note explained that his suicide was a gesture of protest against the jury's taste in music. Never available on CD before, Brown Plays Tenco has now been digitally remastered with twelve bonus tracks recorded live in Italy in 1988. These include in-concert renditions of songs by Luigi Tenco as well as solo material by both Brown (Besides All That, rwf) and Tuxedomoon (What Use?, Egypt , Lowlands Tone Poem). Artist Resume: Steven Brown was born in Chicago in 1952, and currently resides in Mexico City. Tuxedomoon formed in San Francisco in 1977 around the nucleus of Steven Brown, Blaine Reininger and Peter Principle. Following a string of releases on the Residents' Ralph label, the band relocated to Europe in 1981. Their dozen-odd group albums include the classics Half Mute, Desire, Suite En Sous-Sol, Ghost Sonata and Holy Wars. The latest TM album Bardo Hotel was released in 2006.

Chinese Stars
Listen To Your Left Brain (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, US Having honed their chaotic four-on-the-floor post-punk dance style into an unequivocal signature. Here, the Chinese Stars set in motion a tsunami of new waves, crafting an atmosphere of propulsive sonic escapism fueled by noodle-stringed guitar riffs, seat-of-your-pants lyrics, and hallucinatory synths. This is a fast-forward audio movement, taking music back to the base pleasures. Razor-sharp, aural pop art: the overblown are busted.

The ghosts, half-light, and uncertainties remain, but included in this music is a newfound optimism. With the addition of piano and violin, the band paints from a broader palette, adding splashes of pedal steel and slide guitar to their already lush songs.
Their most accomplished and triumphant record. Recorded in Nashville with Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Calexico, Silver Jews).

Damiak
Micalavera (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 1ST)
PS, US Abe Dichi who's musical works are released via the Damaik alias is what you would classify as a true cosmopolitan musical entity. Spending most of his life moving between Mexico, Europe and the United States somehow gives his debut album "Micalavera" for n5MD an undercurrent of international, almost globalized, method. Add in the mixing and mastering of Mio and Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bjork, Mum, Bonnie "Prince" Billy) at Greehouse Studios in Iceland and this compounds the borderless sense of musical place that Micalavera embodies. The album title which roughly translates to "my skeleton" utilizes guitars, melodium, harmodium, violin, piano, field recordings, and live drums as well as electronic elements and edits that may recall similar moments to Sigurdsson's copatriots Mum and Blindfold or even to the more delicate moments of Dntel. Micalavera is an absorbing mix of many musical styles interwoven into a bright, affectionate, yet cohesive whole that features 12 vignettes of multicultural instrumentation, technique, and raw wondrous emotion.

The CD presents Linda in an intimate setting accompanied throughout by stand-up bass, piano, violin, cello, slide guitar, touches of percussion and xylophone - the focus always being the pure beauty of Draper's vocal performance. Dying Californian, The
Coarsegold (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, US The sound of The Dying Californian is rooted in American tradition, influenced by country and folk as much as rock. With floating melodies and complex harmonies, it is difficult to place it into a genre. It is as much at home in a drunken hootenanny as in a late and lonesome night. It all just fits. The Dying Californian's third release on Turn Records is titled Coarsegold. Three years in the making, the album marks a jumping point in the bands signature style and sound, refined and redefined. The story of the album starts 3 years ago when Nathan Dalton, the primary songwriter for The Dying Californian found himself with a new job that had him traveling throughout California, staying in a variety of different places, often, for weeks as a time. On one lengthy trip, Dalton found himself holed up in the small town of Coarsegold, the geographic center of California. Neither northern or southern, western or eastern, simply Coarsegold, California - a town existing somewhere in between. It was here that Dalton found a new center for his own writing, influenced by the stark contrasts of California as well as the isolation and inspiration that only come from being on the road. He began to pen a new record; handheld tape recorders, lyrics on napkins, music on motel notepads, wherever he could find to write it down, he would. Coarsegold, the geographic center of California, the heart, also serves as the pinion for the record.

Eames Era
Heroes & Sheroes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 17TH)
PS, US The bands sophomore record is so brazenly hooky, with songs that are so totally fleshed out with memorable sing-a-longable instantly familiar melodies, chugging guitars, ba-bas, harmonies & handclaps, you could forgive it for what it lacks in innovation. In fact, Heroes highlights are some of the best chick-pop, and wholeheartedly deserve to sit amongst your Go-Gos greatest hits CD, Blondies Parallel Lines & the last Mates of State record too. The first single, "When You were a Millionaire", is currently featured as the theme song on MTV's new show, "I'm from Rolling Stone". Also had a song featured on Grey's Anatomy soundtrack.

PS, US Following "Rock It To The Moon" (2001), "Power Out" (2004), and "Axes" (2005), there seems to be a new kind of light shining on Electrelane that remains strong throughout this record, but the willingness to push the envelope hasn't left the band either. "No Shouts No Calls" is an album of enticingly irregular brilliance. "Electrelane effortlessly assimilate a wide cut of moods and influences - the off kilter harmony of the Velvet Underground, the droning insistence of Krautrock heroes Can, the bratty brashness of feminist popsters Le Tigre - into a heartfelt batch of art-pop that never sounds snobby" -Blender.
