Parasol New Arrivals • December 02, 2008

Greetings all,

Well, as you already know, it’s the week after Thanksgiving. Although it was hard to pull ourselves off the couch and unglue our eyes from the tube we have and we’re ready to face a new month and steady ourselves for the approaching holidays. As the new releases start to simmer down we’ve still got a few tricks up our old Para-sleeves that will even make that old street con fall prey to our honest offerings.

2009 is going to be the trick-pulling year, as we’ll be releasing a couple of dubplate analog-audio surprises as well as a handful of digital delights to keep them hungry ears well fed.

Down yonder the text is long and winding so align your mind accordingly and be sure to pick out something special for that special someone.

The greatest musician reads like a noveL in reverse. Get it?

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

The 1900s "Medium High EP" Mini-CD ON SALE: $5.00 (Parasol)
Available on iTunes and Emusic now! Pre-order the MCD which lands 12/2, we'll ship immediately!
Medium High, the 28-minute new mini-album from Chicago psych-pop troupe The 1900s, is a collection of outtakes, b-sides and radical re-imaginings. Darker, less poppy and looser than previous releases, the mix of songs was recorded at various times, places and with various people, and manages to form a surprisingly cohesive and unique addition to the 1900s catalog. The majority of these songs were written long before the debut EP, Plume Delivery, was ever released.
With a couple rosters shake-ups since then and now, Medium High finds the band purging its sometimes dark past – making way for a new direction and new album, which they are currently in the process of recording. Accordingly, the songs deal with characters who find themselves in uncertain, in-between moments in their lives. Medium High again finds The 1900s proving to never be in short supply of surprise. Check out the release page for more info, sound samples, links to digital downloads, etc.

Roy's Vinyl Pick of the Week

Barn Owl/Tom Carter "Split" LP $17.00 (Blackest Rainbow)
Newest Blackest Rainbow hot on the heels of some truly killer releases from the artists involved, both of whom seem to have really pushed their sounds and vibes to new levels this year. Barn Owl's side has been mastered by local jammer Ben Nash, and its three tracks of sparse drone layered with bleak guitar epic-ness, tingling chimes, and dark mountainous whispers. The guitars here sound delicate and beautiful, but it remains bleak and empty, if you enjoyed their LP on Not Not Fun, then this is a real treat. Tom Carter's 16-minute 'Train Kept' follows pretty damn nicely from his recent Shots At Infinity releases on Important. A far cry from his more psychedelic folk experimentations, here he slashes and riffs like many a legend, and maybe, just maybe, it's a slight tribute to a certain band, too? This is a fully wild piece of work. Black sleeves, pasted stark landscape cover, with an insert of liner notes. Limited to 380 copies.

Atkinson, Felicia
La La La
PS, JAPAN "La La La" was recorded at home in Paris and Brussels. As a multimedia artist more than a full time musician, I decided to use rough materials of recording and mixing such as Garageband free software, in a democratic and playful way, with the instruments that were at home, such as piano, acoustic guitar, glockenspiel and field recording from the room. The songs were done by improvisation, and then edited with sometimes the help of Sylvain Chauveau, in the aim of keeping something very oral, inspired and spontaneous. Some pieces have been presented before as a sound installation in real space. I like when there are connections and echos of the same piece in different mediums such as installation, recordings, texts, and sounds. The lyrics are in different languages in this idea of playing with the different levels of knowledge and images. One of the songs, "Schnee Part", is the reading of a poem by Paul Celan, "Umlessbarkeit", in the "Schnee Part" anthology. It is read in German as many time, as I needed to understand it. The last song, "Lonesome as the Sun" is based on the guitar of David Daniell, a great guitarist from Chicago i met with Sylvain in New York City. Chanting and playing "La La La" was for me at the same level as drawing or writing: something to measure the present time and the perspective of the vanished, as a memento mori.

Attar Cups
Untitled
PS, US This Maine-based crew features a host of psychedelic jam talent. Nemo of Drona Parva and head honcho of Time-Lag Records, Sparrow Wildchild of The Bummer Road, and the three members of Visitations, whose record on Time-Lag was one of 2007's best! So this is the second recording from this crew, the first being Sloow Tape. This beast is different to the vibe on that release, still with a super nice jam band sound, but projecting to more 'song'- (in the loosest possible way) based plane, a little like Visitations. Edition of 299 hand-numbered copies with zero info and 11" x 11" stickers on the front and back of black sleeves.

Black Watch, The
After The Gold Room EP
PS, US Los Angeles indie pop juggernauts The Black Watch follow up this summer's highly reguarded "Icing The Snow Queen" with a CDEP that highlights the subtle, thrilling twin-guitar attack intertwinings and fine, poetic, catchy songwriting they've come to be known for in their remarkably prolific 14-CD tenure. As Andy Gill of Gang of Four noted recently in The Independent UK: "TBW have, in songwriter John Andrew Fredrick, and artist capable of My Bloody Valentine miasma and Nick Drake guietness - LA has not produced a band like this in a long time!"

Bogner, Ursula
Recordings: 1969-1988
PS, US Debut release on JAN JELINEK's label FAITICHE: a collection of unheard electronic experiments from an unlikely source. URSULA BOGNER was a pharmacist, wife & mother, & she was obsessed w/ electronic music - an obsession that drove her to build her own studio for extensive recording & experimentation. Throughout her early 20s, she followed activities of Cologne-based Studio Für Elektronische Musik, attended seminars, explored musique concrète &, later on, shared her children's enthusiasm for British new wave pop. The whole time she created here own music at home, never made public until now. Nearly everything here is taken straight from the original reels. Covering a fairly short period of her creative career, this conveys a peculiar coherence in both form & content. A coherence that reflects her accessible, rhythmic & sometimes even "poppy" side. An exhilarating find from a truly undiscovered electronic artist.

Brain Donor
Drain'd Boner
PS, US JULIAN COPE's Brain Donor showcases 5 tracks of abandoned sludge trudge. Showing typical restraint, the maker describes the record as "NON-LINEAR CUNTEDNESS". While this is probably an overly harsh estimation of "Drain'd Boners" brutal mix of post punk style, No Wave & free proto-metal, the record's truly a-tonal sonic attack will certainly cause some divided opinions among fans of the band. But if your idea of time well spent is listening to music which evokes the sound of overly caffeinated baby elephants slopping about in oily puddles, that have formed outside a former Soviet chemical factory, then this is the album for you.

PS, UK "'Bridge answer the question, for anyone who wishes to know, what happened to the Canadian band David after their lone record on Sound Canada in the late '60s. The best way to describe Bridge's album would be Sweetheart Of The Rodeo on tons of acid! There is no fuzz guitar, but a clean West Coast shimmering tone on all tracks, bizarre vocal effects on the tripped out 'It's My Life' and plenty of weirdness present for the whole album. Very rare and a good one.'" --Acid Archives

Bronnt Industries Kapital
Häxan
PS, UK The world of horror soundtracks has long been an inspiration for Bronnt Industries Kapital, the musical project revolving around Bristol-based composer Guy Bartell, and it is no surprise that Bronnt should return the favor by delivering a horror soundtrack of its own. Häxan (1922, dir. Benjamin Christensen) is a fusion film using dramatization, documentary and animation to explore the themes of witchcraft and superstition. Met with outrage on its release, it has since been reappraised as a classic. Bronnt was commissioned to write a new soundtrack to accompany the film's first release on DVD in Europe (TVD3758) in 2007, and it is this soundtrack which forms the group's second album, the follow up to 2005's acclaimed Virtute et Industria. Much of Häxan was shot at night to enhance the sinister mood of the film, and Bronnt utilized a similar schedule to evoke the awe of the Sabbat. The soundtrack was composed and performed using a wide range of instrumentation, including clockwork devices, transistor organs, mellotron, clarinet, guitars, bespoke string instruments, pianos, tone generators, analog synthesizers and elaborate processing and manipulation through antique tape machines and plate reverbs. The resulting scope of the soundtrack is vast, ranging from minimalist clockwork lullabies to lush orchestral ensemble pieces, heavenly analog sound collages to hellish electrical miasmas, all imbued with a darkly hypnagogic ambiance worthy of Christensen's strange world populated by mechanical demons and castles in the clouds.

Calder
Lower
PS, UK Calder formed in Iceland when musical instrument maker Lárus Sigurðsson and Ólafur Josephsson, who is perhaps best known for his recordings under the alias Stafrænn Hákon, met and decided to join forces. Their first collaborations resulted in self-titled five-track album of improvised, experimental instrumentals that was released through Ólafur's Vogor Recordings and later picked up by UK indie Unlabel. Lárus' background is in classical music, having played with various Icelandic musicians and self-released a handful of solo recordings. His recent album Jarðhörpusálmar was improvised and recorded using musical instruments that he had designed and built himself. Ólafur Josephsson has been experimenting with ambient guitar arrangements under the name Stafrænn Hákon since 1999. He has released his music through various labels including his own Vogor Recordings, the Resonant Label and Awkward Silence Recordings, with the music progressing and becoming increasingly refined since his debut album Eignas Jeppa in 2001. After the creative success of Calder's debut, a second album was conceived in 2005 when Lárus and Ólafur started exchanging ideas, shaping and molding their music, with the material composed in a truly collaborative way - Lárus handed Ólafur acoustic melodic ideas and Ólafur added electronic elements, with tracks gradually acquired shape, depth and life. With this new music, melody, structure and beats have come more to the fore, although the beautiful and haunting guitar atmospherics are still evident, running like a thread through the album. 2008 saw the completion of this process and the resulting album has been entitled Lower. The music can perhaps best be described as a fusion of experimental, ambient, classical and acoustic music.

PS, PORTUGAL Chico Magnetic Band's eponymous album, released by French Vogue subsidiary Box Office label in 1971, defines the term 'heavy Psychedelia.' These bunch of freaks, lead by Algerian born Mahmoud 'Chico' Ayari were clearly influenced by the Jimi Hendrix Experience but somehow they created a song of their own: violent, trashy, stoned as hell heavy psych featuring demented vocals, furious guitars, loud rhythm section and mindblowing studio effects including phasing, backward tapes, weird and groovy electronics. Eight killer tracks including their insane fuzzed-out deconstruction of Hendrix's 'Crosstown Traffic' and cult classics like 'Pop Pull Hair,' 'Explosion,' 'Pop Orbit.' PS, US The 1st full-length release from the collaborative project of Berlin producers/DJs CHRIS DE LUCA (ex-Funstorung) & PHON.O - together called CLP. Here their instrumental-tracks are bombarded by underground rappers from the U.S. & South-Africa. The result is an explosive mixture of styles - from dirty techno to ghetto beats. Double Fisted b/w Weekend Condition
PS, US Released on the RONG MUSIC label (DFA offshoot label), so order up! These dudes hail from the sunny shores of Long Beach, CA. They met, as so many musical partners have, while loitering/browsing at the local record shops. After becoming fast friends & production partners, the duo finally got around to releasing their sun-baked dance music to the public. A nail-biting punk disco offering - speaker-shredding synth line & drunken, chanted chorus is a valiant 1st stab at the disco dance charts. Comes w/ 2 equally mental PRINS THOMAS remixes. The Nordic demigod brings the funky disco beat, while on the flipside he creates a head-nodding Balearic version that makes one feel a bit like they should be lying in the tall, tall grass watching a liquid gel light show in outer space.

Cola Jet Set
Contando Historias
PS, SPAIN First COLA JET SET album, a collection of 12 classic guitar n' drum pop rubies. Superbly produced by Guille Milkyway (LA CASA AZUL), main singer here in "Nuba". Born of some ashes of LOS FRESONES REBELDES (Spanish one hit wonders in 1997) they finally top their Pop Crusade with a solid and mature recording. COLA JET SET are a melting pot of the "B sound": BEATLES, BEACH BOYS, BYRDS, Brill Building, Brigitte Bardot, BLONDIE, you name it! Then add a little Soul touch Southern and Northern, and play all this with that New Wave fresh approach. Not much noticed when it came out in 2004, since their "comeback" in 2007 (playing all over Spain and at Liverpool's International Pop Overthrow) is almost sold out.

Black sheep is a musical exploration of what it is to be an outsider in modern Western Culture. Across 11 songs and one epic poem, Cope examines the idea of social outcasts and how they - through their sheer obstinacy and strength of personality - carve a path for themselves in the normal world, often changing society ís own concepts of normality in the process. The album and EP reveal Cope at a pinnacle of songwriting and feature sumptuous lashings of orchestral Mellotron, orchestral percussion and marching bass drums, plus oboe, wah guitar, rumbling synthesizers and gorgeous harmony vocals.

Dinky
May Be Later
PS, GERMANY This is Dinky's third album and her first full-length release on Vakant, after the Move In EP (VA 020EP). Dinky has brought with her a welcome infusion of freshness and bloom to the otherwise dank locker room. May Be Later, like the artist, is the prototypical combination of beauty and brawn. Dinky's long journey began in her native Chile, growing up playing piano and experimenting with modern dance and choreography. As a teen, she listened to artists as diverse as Brian Eno to Prince, before finding electronic music from Plastikman, Aphex Twin, and Carl Craig in the mid-'90s. She made lifelong connections in the Santiago scene with Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack, and Luciano, and was soon sharing stages with them. In the late '90s, Dinky moved from Santiago to New York City to join the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and was also introduced to American house, the evolution of techno, and parties like Body and Soul, NASA raves, and Twilo. Soon, at 23 and armed only with an MPC 2000, her original productions began. Dancing during the day, she was making a name for herself as a DJ by night, eventually hosting regular underground parties with Magda until she was forced to leave the States for Berlin due to post-9/11 visa restrictions. With her new home came chart-topping productions, mega-club residencies, live performances, and international recognition. May Be Later bridges sound and mood from the summery and sublime to the dark and throbbing. While "Mars Cello" floats and warms, "Burdelia" chugs somewhere between Chicago and early NYC house. "Fade Me In" zips along with furious kink and dubious vox by Dinky's longtime friend Jorge González. "Seven 2 Seven," when aimed at 8am Berlin ravers, massive freakouts ensue. "She Is Moving" features minimal vocalist extraordinaire Big Bully, attaining a vital equilibrium of naughty and nice. The album closes with "Mind," an electronic fusion -- moving, looming, eerie, and reassuring. This album shows Alejandra Iglesias' development, exposing the paths, connections and influences that brought her here. The beach, NYC underground in all its flavors, Berlin, the stage, Detroit, electronic waves from all directions, Chicago, mega-clubs... it's all here and it's all her own.

Ex-Cocaine/Yellow Swans
S-T
PS, US Two-storied USA duo institutions share war stories across twelve miles of raw wax, and the rest of us are lucky enough to eavesdrop. Missoula, Montana's Ex-Cocaine continue roping that weird rambling wind that seems to stir the soul and keep America mellow, and the pair of anthems they jam out here encapsulates the whole breadth of their sea-to-shining-sea cosmosis. Plainsong guitar lassoes around loose-limbed percussion flame-fanning, building and burning till a boss bonfire glows on the horizon, then they close out the side with a ragged and earnest Meat Puppets cover that's become a live staple of late. Real and roamin'. On the B, Yellow Swans channel a supreme slice of psychedelic eulogy that cuts twice as deep with the knowledge that after many a summer (they birthed in 2002-ish) dies the Swan. Pete and Gabe's DYS saga has spanned the decade and their impending non-existence will be lamented all over the world, so the more 11th hour record books they want to stencil with their electric synergies, the better for all of us. R.I.P.eace out. In a stunning "sexy legs" kaleidoscopic masterpiece art jacket by Religious Knife Maya Miller. Half on bleached olive vinyl, half on black. Edition of 600.

Fell, Mark
Attack On the Silence
PS, US LIMITED EDITION of 1000. Attack on Silence brings together a series of works by British artist Mark Fell exploring the relationships between geometry, color, and waveform. These works have been shown around the world as performances, installations, and in print. For the past decade Mark Fell has been one of the leading innovators in the fields of experimental electronic music and sound art. Combining interests in experimental music, contemporary art, computer technology and philosophy, his work has been performed and exhibited internationally to wide critical acclaim. Mark Fell is one half of SND. Sacred geometries, and their sonic equivalents, are said to mirror the micro and macroscopic structures of the physical world; the complex harmonies of the Tibetan singing bowl, like the patterns of the Mandala, allow access to the deepest levels of the consciousness inducing meditative states that transform the very being of their participants. In the modern reciprocals of these technologies the shift is one of teleology. The sacred metals and antique art of the singing bowls give way to the magic of digital synthesis as sacred geometry gives proxy to psychophysiology and the cognitive neuroscience of brainwave entrainment. Drawn from these sources-with mutual ambivalence-and realized through a distinct aesthetic minimalism, intricate combination of form, color and sound are projected through a series of transitions, sometimes gradual, sometimes abrupt, sometimes giving way to sustained tones and repetitions. In a process of ever-emerging horizon-an attack on silence and a space for silence-the potential arises to be ensconced or alienated, a space for enchantment, for anxiety, for profound boredom or for reverie. Are these phenomena affirmations or reconfigurations of the subject-routes to an authentic, spiritual or otherwise-or are they essentially physiological? Are they aesthetic distractions or intrusive technological interventions-pointers to dystopian possibilities? Are we being enlightened? Examined? Entertained? Enmeshed? Recorded at The Music Research Centre at the University of York (UK) and snd studio Sheffield 2007 and 2008. Digital coding and mastering by tez in NTSC. Audio presented in both stereo and 5.1

Fennesz
Black Sea
PS, US His 4th solo album for TOUCH, & his 1st since 'Venice' in 2004. Pitchfork's Mark Richardson writes: "CHRISTIAN FENNESZ takes his time. He's been a busy guy all through this decade in terms of collaborations, live records, remixes, & so on, but he's only released a few proper albums under his surname, & each has been brilliant. (This begins) w/ some trademark neo-industrial gurgles, it folds in bits of guitar & strings rather beautifully, creating a cluster of sound that trembles, seeming to wait for something. That something moves in gradually in the form of a massive cloud of distortion, a fine white mist of harmonics mixed w/ a dark undercurrent of rumbling bass. The tension between these elements is so well balanced, each individual element remaining in the mix even as the sound field becomes impossibly dense, that it's no surprise that it takes a while to get it just right. As it begins to draw down about 5 mins. in, you can't help but wish that another full Fennesz album was following behind it. Soon." Here he used acoustic & electric guitars, synths, electronics, lloopp & computers. All trks composed, performed, recorded & mixed by Fennesz in Vienna & Paris w/ contributions by fellow musician ROSY PARLANE.

Ferraro, James
Multitopia
PS, US New album from James Ferraro of The Skaters/Lamborghini Crystal et al., the first run ever presented under his own name. 'Multitopia is our reality system,' James writes in the liner notes. 'A post-9/11 reality technology in between the frames of data reception. A cross wire into 'new head' and necessary evolution upon the impact of the towers.' It feels like a major work from James, the first fully-conceived album to go beyond his initial brain-fried 1980s nightmare culture documentation, reconciling both dystopian and utopian mindsets in a vision of Pan as Multitopia. Body modification, the blurring of sexual persona (via cracked images of James on the back with a modified pair of breasts chilling next to an arcade game) and cyborg intelligences are all recurrent tropes in James' work, but here he explodes them all, with some of the most aggressively-nuanced keyboard and drum work of his entire career, kicking off with a full kit sound that sits somewhere between industrial steel drums and Kaoss pads, then building to an evocative peak that then dissolves into wave after wave of fluxing keyboard drone and oddly-looped vocal fragments. The gravity of the music is truly omnivorous, devouring drone, punk, new wave, industrial and minimal synth modes and spitting them back out as intensely detailed black and white visions of the future-now. James somehow manages to interweave vacuous TV announcements and cheap anchor man quips alongside the lucid, microtone-rich keyboard work, situating the whole deal in a virtual, godless netherworld with each track a further descent into hell. It is both beautiful and horrifying. A major work from James -- no one is doing anything remotely like him. Highly recommended.' -- David Keenan. Remastered version of the CD-R release on New Age Discs. Limited edition of 425 copies. Color printed covers. Dedicated to Zac Davis.

Ferraro, James
K2 - Chameleon Ballet
PS, US 'In Chameleon Ballet, I wanted to create a work of magic that simulates a dream atmosphere of post-industrial landscapes, with the waking memory of a romantic alien encounter occurring in the dream. Dedicated to the mystery of night and the magic of dreams' --James Ferraro. 'Debut limited edition album by this new sci-fi synth project by James Ferraro of The Skaters et al., with 1980s minimal wave moves bisected by the kinda keyboard patterns you might've found on an Edgar Froese solo album or post-Body Love Klaus Schulze, then exploded with barbarous invocations, syruped-vocals and some black drone atmospherics. Or, as the cover art suggests, urban landscapes as visioned by showroom dummies illuminated under 3 a.m. neon. Another killer.' --David Keenan. Remastered and expanded version of the CD-R release on New Age Discs -- this has an additional previously-unreleased track. Limited edition of 425 copies. Black & white printed covers.

Fleischmann, B.
Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung
PS, GERMANY Morr Music releases another record by their old Viennese friend B. Fleischmann. Two genuine and touching farewell songs are the beacons of light on this record, and, even more than The Humbucking Coil, Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung! has made its way from sound to songwriting. Still the sounds come tumbling out of the hard disk and one can hear fingers screwing on regulators. And yet these nine tracks are of a distinct corporeity and spatiality; for instance, when Marilies Jagsch or Sweet William Van Ghost lend their voices for two wonderful moments each. The productive feedback between Vienna and Berlin, between Bernhard Fleischmann and Thomas Morr started with Pop Loops For Breakfast nine years ago. With Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung!, Bernhard Fleischmann arrives at a carefully-set wooden table, arranged in a warm and glowing sunset. The aromas are darker and more wholehearted now. The groove box of former times has vanished almost entirely -- only within the congenial embrace of Bernhard Fleischmann's "Phones & Machine" (The Humbucking Coil) and Daniel Johnston's "King Kong" can it still be traced. Regardless of the change in tune, these sounds won't pass you by -- they swing on to the next morning, stroll through the streets with you, drift as an echo from the houses' walls; sometimes as a slow dub, sometimes as an intimate ballad. These are sounds that tumble and dance.

Buddha Machine II (Burgundy)
PS, CHINA The Beijing-based duo FM3 is back with an all-new version of their wildly successful 2005 release, the Buddha Machine. Introducing Buddha Machine 2.0: 9 new loops. 3 new colors. Pitch bend. Blurring the line between music box and musical instrument, the Buddha Machine 2.0 is an interactive album that lets users customize the listening experience. Drop the pitch and the music ebbs in a low ambient drone. Boost the speed and suddenly its alive with melody. Add a few more machines, set them at different speeds and you have an evolving audio perfume. Plug it into a mixer, add some beats or vocals or guitar... FM3 won't mind. In fact, they encourage people to use the Buddha Machine as inspiration. Since its release in 2005, the original Buddha Machine has sold more than 50,000 units worldwide and has won praise from artists as diverse as Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Low, Monolake, Sunn O))), Blixa Bargeld and Mike Patton. Legendary producer Brian Eno was the first customer for the original Buddha Machine and nearly 3 years later told FM3 he still "cherishes" his purchase! Similar in shape and design to the original Buddha Machine, but boasting more robust construction and improved sound quality, the 2.0 comes in three colors: burgundy, grey and brown. For those who haven't experienced the pleasure of the original, the Buddha Machine is essentially a small plastic box that plays ambient loops. The loops repeat endlessly until the "track" is switched or the two AA batteries (not included) run out. The machine has its own built-in speaker and there is also a headphone jack for a more personal experience. But the charm of the device isn't nearly as specific: the Buddha Machine has a calming presence in today's fast-paced world. Its charm mixes with FM3's innovative music to provide the owner with an experience that is hard to define. Essentially, it's a box with a life, a tool for living, and to many, it's a friend. Founded in 1999 by Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian, FM3 are considered pioneers of electronic music in China. Inspired by Buddhist prayer boxes found at temples around Asia, the duo released the original Buddha Machine in April 2005, winning acclaim in publications including BoingBoing.net, The New York Times and Arthur magazine.

God Is An Astronaut
S/T
PS, UK Trance-inducing, post-rock instrumental trio GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT has announced a European and its second US tour in support of its forthcoming self-titled album, "God Is An Astronaut". The tour will kick off on December 4th in San Diego, USA. Hailing from Glen of the Downs, Ireland, GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT formed in 2002 and have already released 3 albums and one EP. GIAA's storied live performances have the unique ability to effortlessly ascend / transcend at any given moment, reaching bold crescendos of both of dim shimmer and blinding incandescence. The band make use of projected, self-edited video footage along with impressive lighting arrangements to form what it calls, a "full audio visual show", with each song accompanied by its own video. GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT's marriage of raw power and delicate beauty has drawn comparisons to the works of like-minded indie acts Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai. The band has performed all over the world including sell out shows in Boston, New York, London, Dublin and Moscow. The upcoming GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT live performances are listed in the Track Listing column. Updated GIAA news and tour information will be made available via the GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT web domains: "beauty and menace... fantastically broad and lush soundscapes... it's like watching a thunderhead slowly approach from the distance; dark, towering and fat with tension." - DROWNED IN SOUND "On Far from Refuge, their third full-length, GIaA ventures even further into the outer realms, streamlining their sound as if to make it sleeker for the demands of deep space flight. A simultaneously gentle and enthralling adventure upon a star-strewn stage." - DECOY MUSIC "A highlight of the day for sure, their big sound should have no problem filling the tiny Knitting Factory tap bar which is where they'll finish their U.S. tour in NYC tonight" - SXSW Review - brooklynvegan.com

Gong
Magick Brother
PS, UK Originally released by cult French label BYG in early 1970 under the joint names of Daevid Allen and Gilly Smyth, Magick Brother has long been recognized as being the first Gong album and it clearly displays the true beginnings of what was to come. The album was recorded in September of 1969, a couple of months before the official formation of Gong, Daevid Allen played guitar and took vocal duties on it, while his wife Gilly wrote all the songs and added her distinctive 'space whisper' vocals. This core duo were supported by a group of highly-accomplished musicians which included Earl Freeman, a jazz bass player who had worked earlier with Albert Ayler, Didier Malherbe playing flute and sax, pianist Burton Green and drummer Rachid Hoari. Containing some great songs such as 'Rational Anthem' and 'Gong Song' and featuring some fine distorted and processed guitar playing by Allen, Magick Brother has more than stood the test of time and still sounds fresh and full of charm. Presented in an attractive digipak gatefold packaging with Daevid Allen's now-classic 'Ph.P' original drawings and wacky liner notes in addition to authoritative new sleeve notes and only available intermittently over the years in the UK, this timely re-issue will be welcomed by fans of the group and '70s prog rock alike.

Human Greed
Black Hill: Midnight At The Blighted Star
PS, UK This is the third release from the UK's finest exponents of melancholic experimentalism, Human Greed. In addition to the band's core membership of founder Michael Begg and his main collaborator Deryk Thomas, Black Hill: Midnight At The Blighted Star features well-poised contributions from special guests Julia Kent (Antony & the Johnsons, Blind Cave Salamander), Fabrizio Palumbo (Larsen, Blind Cave Salamander), David Tibet (Current 93) and Clodagh Simonds (Fovea Hex, Mellow Candle). Although in many ways far gentler than previous Human Greed albums, Black Hill packs a significant punch. Part nightmare train journey to a bruised and foreboding underworld, part voyage beyond the alluring tails of shooting stars to an aching void of longing, this album may prove to be the band's sullen masterpiece. Processed electronics, treated acoustic and electric instruments and numerous field recordings are eloquently arranged to present a composition as satisfying in its formal arrangement as it is breathtaking in its emotional impact. Although possessed with a very individual sound, Human Greed's sounding notes may draw comparisons to the timeless, stretched melancholia of Stars Of The Lid, Black Light District-era Coil, Nurse With Wound's less whimsical moments, William Basinski's evocations of lost time and romantic despair and even Brian Eno's ambient work. None of this, of course, accounts for the ever-present, unsettling air of cruelty and, occasionally, latent violence, that adds a singularly dark note to their work.

Faces Of Jade
PS, UK "'This came to me with an 'underrated?' tag attached, and I'm inclined to agree. It's late '60s Brit-psych/pop of the McCartney/Roy Wood variety transplanted to 1970s Cincinnati, serving up plenty of innovation, fun and a fair amount of label money on hand. Opens with dreamy psych mini-epic that recalls the second Fallen Angels album, the rest holds a middle ground between London'68 and the clever pop that Ohio would become famous for, leaving the listener to decide if this is a late '60s lytepsych LP or in fact an Anglo-retro '70s trip. The B-side is a collaboration between Culver and Fordell Research Unit, another side-long piece that starts off with some bassed-up doom chugs and slogs that sound like fucking something that could be set down by some Southern Lord brutality, but then it punches you in the face with its distorted, churning hell. Kazumasa, Hashimoto
Tokyo Sonata: Original Soundtrack
PS, JAPAN They were supposed to be leading a normal life. But something crept unexpectedly into their lives and turned this family into one of disharmony. Will there be a day when this family can ring in harmony again? TOKYO SONATA is a film portraying the typical family of modern day Japan and is an exploration into a new genre for world-renowned director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The widely acclaimed film which received the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival is also the first film score created by artist Kazumasa Hashimoto and noble is proud to announce the release of its original soundtrack. The minimal but heartwarming harmony created by the mellotron, piano, guitar and noise synchronizes brilliantly with the film to bring more strength to the world of Kurosawa. In addition to the film scores that brought colorful impression to the film, the album includes many unreleased pieces written for the film as well as a cover song of "Clair De Lune" by Claude Debussy, an artist much respected by Hashimoto and apiece that can also be heard in parts of the film. It is a soundtrack and a Kazumasa Hashimoto original album that can be enjoyed by Hashimoto fans and movie fans alike. As the title TOKYO SONATA indicates, music plays a central role in the film and Kazumasa Hashimoto took on this challenge with solid respect. The result is a collection of lean music that preserves the raw essence and core of the melody that help to guide the film to perfection, a monumental piece that celebrates the artist's entry into new horizons as a composer of film music. Kazumasa Hashimoto biography: Born in Tokyo. Composer/ Musician. Kazumasa Hashimoto has released 4 albums to present including Euphorium released from noble records in December 2007. Until now, the artist has received 5 stars in a review by Germany's DE:BUG magazine, his music has been used by the UK's BBC television, and his work has been taken up widely by Japanese and overseas media in Europe and the United States. June 2007, Kazumasa Hashimoto performed in Europe's largest festival of electronic music and multimedia art, the sonar festival in Barcelona, and has been spreading his music actively on a global scale. In addition to his own work, Hashimoto created music for the movie TOKYO SONATA (director: Kiyoshi Kurosawa), an award winning film in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival and continues to unleash his spectrum of talent as a music producer for commercials, theater, and other artists.

Kiritchenko, Andrey
Misterrious
PS, JAPAN When I started to think about new album, I wanted to keep up with what I have started to explore in "True Delusion" release and continued in "Stuffed With/Out". I wanted to introduce something new to the sound - make it more acoustic than electronic. Believe me or not, I wanted to make a jazz record (my way of course) - cinematic, naive and visionary album. In the new album I choose piano as the main and solo instrument and wanted to make it sound in minimalist, melodic and overtone way. So, when I had some amount of free time in rehearsal rooms of Stockholm's student chummery I started to make first piano sketches. After those sessions and also collecting piano outlines I made later in Kharkov I decided to continue with an appropriate jazz attribute - drums. After few unsuccessful conversations with local drummers I decided to ask Jason Kahn and Martin Brandlmayer for their participation as I really appreciate their stuff and approach. After their part was done I still had some tracks that wished to have a percussion part too, so I decided to try that out myself and bought a snare and a set up of cymbals. By that time I had wonderful field recordings of insects I made on half-island of Crimea (Ukraine) and they fitted very well with the rest and also with my usual instruments: guitar, glockenspiel, mouth harmonica, auto-harp, Tibetan bowls and objects.

Kirkegaard, Jacob
Labyrinthitis
PS, UK This is Jacob Kirkegaard's third album for Touch, after Eldfjall (2005) and 4 Rooms (2006). Born in Denmark, now living and working in Germany, Labyrinthitis was commissioned by Medical Museion in Copenhagen, summer 2007, and was first presented at the international conference "Art and Biomedicine: Beyond the Body." Jacob Kirkegaard has turned his ears inwards: His new work Labyrinthitis is an interactive sound piece that consists entirely of sounds generated in the artist's auditory organs -- and will cause audible responses in those of the audience. Labyrinthitis relies on a principle employed both in medical science and musical practice: When two frequencies at a certain ratio are played into the ear, additional vibrations in the inner ear will produce a third frequency. This frequency is generated by the ear itself: a so-called "distortion product otoacoustic emission" (DPOAE), also referred to in musicology as "Tartini tone." By arranging the tones from his ears in a composition and playing them to an audience, the artist evokes further distortive effects in the ears of his listeners. At first, each new tone can only be perceived "intersubjectively": inside the head of each one in the audience. Kirkegaard artificially reproduces this tone and introduces it, "objectively," into his composition. When combined with another distorting frequency, it will create another tone -- until, step-by-step, a pattern of descending tonal structure emerges whose spiral form mirrors the composition of resonant spectra in the human cochlea. Paradoxical as it may sound: we can listen to our own ears. The human hearing organ -- still often perceived as a passive unidirectional medium -- does not only receive sounds from the outside, it also generates its own sound from within itself. As a matter of fact, it can even be "played on" just like an acoustic instrument.

PS, UK Grey-area reissue of this private press album, originally released in 1975; Kristyl were based in Louisville, KY. "Highly regarded local Christian 1970s melodic guitar-rock with an open late-1960s West Coast vibe, dual guitars and great organic playing/vocals all around. They have a very distinct sound, which makes the tracks seem similar at first, but it opens up after some plays and remains that way. Las Escarlatinas
Al Galope
PS, SPAIN Maybe it's slightly irrational to say that Las Escarlatinas are one of the greatest creations of humankind... but considering how much happiness they brought to the lovers of beauty and pop with their debut album (A todo color released in 2005), you are forced to believe there is something magical and supernatural about this quartet. Las Escarlatinas are one of the few bands that can create their own world. Their playground melancholy, Lolita vocals, the multi colored record sleeves, the 60's and 80's retro charm throwbacks, the ethereal dreamy collective feel, the pink and sticky bubblegum teenage spirit, it's all here...their very own universe that is. However this is only the tip of a musical iceberg that contains J-pop, bubblegum, beat pop with lush harmonies, sunshine and soft pop, beatles-esque moods, donosti pop, italo disco, gentle electronica, bossa nova... This time, the recipe created by Mateo Guiscafré has been cooked by the grand chef Guille Milkyway (La Casa Azul), a true guru in Spain and key opinion leader in the indie scene. Songwriters such as Alberto Matesanz (Mate, Plastic d'Amour), Fernando Márquez El Zurdo, Anne Arbor (Pedro Vigil & Natalia Quintanal), Sergio López De Haro (Kiki D'aki), Violeta Gómez, Miguel Angel Villanueva (Los Brujos), Pablo Jiménez (Pulpops) also ensure that magic is widespread in each of the twelve songs. Add two cover versions of songs by Olivier Libaux (Nouvelle Vague) and Korean hipsters, Misty Blue and voilà, Al galope. The record is just lovely. This is indie-ish pop (although the album has vibes that recall Saint Etienne, Ephemera, Mareva Galanter or The Cardigans) with sultry, angelic and delightful vocals and a generous budget production. Las Escarlatinas achieve being fashioned while being elegant indeed. Their voices are spectacular all over and the production is very much in detail while remaining very modern, straight, vivid and youthful. Everything about Las Escarlatinas seems young and tender. All this band wants is a chance to be heard, and you'll be doing yourself a favor to champion them. Every single song on Al galope is memorable, jewel-like, catchy, shockingly melodic, and tinged with irony and hope. It's hard to choose favourite songs on this album because they're all very well-crafted, both melodically and lyrically. They all get stuck in your head. Las Escarlatinas have definitely jumped to the major leagues. * Siesta also released solo albums of the Escarlatinas singers under the production of Ramón Leal & Mateo Guiscafré: Cristina Georgina (Mapamundi) and Bel Divioleta (Espejos).

Library Tapes
A Summer Beneath the Trees
PS, US Library Tapes follow up the highly acclaimed Make Mine Music album Höstluft with the beautiful and atmospheric long player A Summer Beneath the Trees. A Summer Beneath the Trees steps away from the minimal sound of previous Library Tapes releases, with rich layers of sound and more varied instrumentation, and strings taking a more prominent role. Joining Library Tapes main man David Wenngren (piano, laptop and field recordings) are Peter Broderick (Bella Union, Type, Kning Disk) who adds violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celeste, viola and banjo on the six of the album's nine tracks, and Danny Norbury (Static Caravan, Ono) who plays cello on three tracks. The trademark ageing clicks and glitches of earlier releases are largely absent, and there is a newfound warmth and depth to these recordings. The album moves Library Tapes further into the realm of modern classical and cinematic soundtracks, with the music bringing to mind Arvo Pärt, Michael Nyman and Max Richter. Based in Gothenburg in Sweden, David Wenngren has also released music under the name Forestflies and has extensively toured UK, Europe and USA, playing live with the likes of Sylvain Chauveau, Greg Haines and Akira Rabelais.

Lunch, Lydia/Suicide
Frankie Teardrop
PS, UK This is number four in Blast First Petite's year-long series of limited edition 10" vinyl EPs celebrating Alan Vega's 70th birthday. Lydia Lunch -- known to Rev and Vega as the Baby Faced Killer who they so kindly chaperoned through that lost downtown night world crucible where both their futuristic, and highly influential black arts would be born. Artistic kings and queens from the dumpster side of town. Lydia gets all wet and dirty with the thought of what young "Frankie Teardrop" might do to her, over a twisted frug of an electronic beat-nicked soundscape by one-time Lemon Kitten, David Knight. Also presenting one of the great lost Suicide archive items -- a 13-minute epic 1976 recording of Suicide dropping da' bomb on what was then known as "Frankie Teardrop, The Detective vs. The Space Alien."

Magazine
The Complete John Peel Sessions
PS, US Formed by original Buzzcocks lead singer Howard Devoto, Magazine featured a line-up that included John McGeoch, who later joined Siouxsie & The Banshees, and Barry Adamson who became a key member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds before launching a critically praised solo career.

Magazine's combination of punk rock's nervous energy and art rock's experimentalism pushed the boundaries of music. Little wonder that this top post-punk group has been cited the by today's top post-rock group, Radiohead as an infl uence, (performing "Shot By Both Sides" on the Kid-A tour), as well as U2's The Edge, Blur, Maximo Park, Manus, Manic Street Preachers, Elastica, Morrissey (who covered "A Song From Under The Floorboards"), and both Ministry and Peter Murphy who each covered "The Light Pours Out Of Me."

These John Peel Sessions tracks, never before released in the US, provide fascinating, live in-the-studio versions of Magazine's hits as well as many tracks only released as singles. Of particular interest is the song "Boredom," which Howard Devoto originally sang on the debut Buzzcocks single when he was that group's lead vocalist.

Marsupilami
S-T
PS, US This album, originally released in 1970 on Transatlantic, is made up of dark, foreboding music that touches upon the early prog scene (lots of organ, flute, electric guitar) but also throws in some folky passages and jazz experimentations as well. It is somewhat of a cross between bands like The Strawbs, Nektar, Jethro Tull, East of Eden, Atomic Rooster, and at times King Crimson.

Nobunny
Love Visions
PS, US While we were busy thinking Oakland was devoid of good music Nobunny was out there making (and selling out of) the fucking record of the year. Originally released on Bubbledumb records earlier this year on vinyl only but 1-2-3-4 Go! is picking it up and doing the vinyl and CD now. This is your chance to finally own the record the guy who washes dishes at your job has been raving about. It's a Half Man, Half Rabbit, Half Nude, lo-fi, bubblegum garage rock soundtrack to sweethearts holding hands and kissing on a long walk home to an rock and roll orgy presided over by Little Richard Motormouth Maybelle, Alan Freed and Joey Ramone. If you aren't instantly in love the second this hits your stereo, I'm afraid there isn't a fun bone in your body or a human heart in your chest. These people have this to say about this... THE L.A. TIMES: "Continuing the grand tradition of Bay Area garage acts dressed in outrageous costumes (remember the Vulcaneers, the Trashwomen and the Mummies?) ...Nobunny has released a rip-roaring good-times party album that comes on like the illegitimate offspring of the Archies, Joey Ramone, Hasil Adkins and Kim Fowley. A mixture of gritty, fuzzy garage rock and giddy, sticky bubblegum music..."

Oliveros, Pauline
Four Electronic Pieces 1959-1966
PS, BELGIUM Sub Rosa presents Pauline Oliveros' early and definitive tape and electronic music of the late fifties and sixties -- all released for the first time ever! Born in Texas in 1932, Pauline Oliveros is more than ever an important American composer. Her accomplishments speak to an array of disciplines: her pieces for accordion; the creation of the Deep Listening Institute, a center dedicated to fostering artistic creativity through workshops, performances, and new technologies; her approach to improvisation in relation to meditation; and her numerous and varied collaborations with, among others, John Cage, Morton Subotnick, Terry Riley, Sonic Youth, Erold and Andrew Deutsch. Each piece on this release exemplifies her systematic exploration of electronic sounds, which was fundamental to this period. "Mnemonics" prefigures her meditative and breathing pieces. "V of IV" structures sound as noise. "Time Perspectives" is among her first variations on silence. Finally, "Once Again" develops a wild energy that out-strips itself, a frenzy the likes of which is hard to find even to this day. As Oliveros explains, the detailed methodology behind her work offers a unique inquiry into the process of artistic invention itself. "My work with electronic music began in 1959. My first tape piece was an ambitious four channel work called 'Time Perspectives.' The piece was made by recording small sounds from objects resonated on a wooden wall and changing the tape speed. I used cardboard tubes as filters by inserting the mic into the tube and recording sources through the tubes. I used my bath tub as a reverberation chamber. Sections of the piece were improvised and then subjected to speed changes. When the San Francisco Tape Music Center was established together with Ramon Sender and Morton Subotnik there was a pool of equipment to use and I began to work with electronic sound. Rather than cut and splice small pieces of tape together to make a composition I chose to work in real time. I used two tape machines with the tape running across both machines to make a delay system. I used two or more oscillators at high frequencies to produce different tones. These tones would also interact with the bias frequencies of the tape recorders. I would play the oscillators into the tape recorders improvising my way through the piece. My system of composing in this manner was my own invention." --Pauline Oliveros

Opale
Level
PS, JAPAN OPALE was recorded during a period of personal turmoil, and creative turbulence. I wanted to follow the Level | Cycla release with a fresh perspective, and a new formula. Having created Cycla from piano and keyboard sounds generated using software that I then subjected to various treatments and deformations, I wanted to create something less fractured, less manipulated. I called upon my good friends, Linden Hale, and Keith Berry to provide me with original piano samples to use as source material, which I then fed through the sampler, but this time attempted to keep to the original spirit of the source material, adding my own digital touches and textures as I went along. Opale represents a singular line of thought, and a singular approach, so I suppose in some sense, all of the tracks actually comprise one piece, broken into several parts. The pieces all represent "the Frozen Moment" ...as the hands of time are unrelenting, waiting for no man, I am sure many of us have ached for time to stand still during moments that are particularly poignant, perhaps, or maybe, mourning the loss of a loved one, we could hold on to these precious moments with them for just a little longer. I have experienced these moments on several occasions, and having lived a humdrum, and pressurized existence, sometimes I yearn to be able to stand back, relax, and savor precious moments for much longer than they actually last in order to gain a greater appreciation of their beauty and magnificence. Opale represents these precious moments, and simultaneously worships and mourns their passing.

Othon
Digital Angel
PS, US Long-awaited 1st album from alternative music's enfant terrible w/ vocal performances by MARC ALMOND, DAVID TIBET, & ERNESTO TOMASINI, & works that defy any pre-existing musical genre. This is the manifestation of OTHON's challenging, bold, & sensitive artistic vision. The pieces are mainly, though not exclusively, for voice & piano, w/ the production cut to a minimum, giving the album an intimate, almost live quality. Othon's compositions - a blend of opera, punk, noise, & lyrical romanticism - are proof of a rich & distinctive musical language. The songs deal w/ desperate love, human bio-chipping, addiction to violence, & 2012; they form a soundtrack to either a passionate love story or a post-apocalyptic nightmare.

Pallers
Humdrum
PS, SWEDEN Labrador proudly present Swedens newest band - Pallers. "Humdrum was produced in Spain with a view over over the Mediterranean. During one week of constant sunshine they created the darkest and finest electronica we've heard in a long time. This is dance music for the lazy, the blazers and for the slightly depressed "When creating we pour everything out that has been collected in the head during decades of intense listening. One leg is always standing in the green grass of pop while the other leg is out on its own, wandering between places such as dance floors, sandy beaches, cold concrete and a weightless existence in a bed or a hammock." PALLERS the band's musical visions are clearly reflected in the music and after each listening new details appears. Endless layers of sounds come together, travel around the soundscapes and fades in- and out of the songs. Desolate choirs floats by, dark arpeggio-synthezisers are constantly changing shape while swirls of treble-ish percussion and echoing guitar figures sounds as if the sun was trying to break through thick clouds. The working process: 1. Record vocals, 2. Upload vocals to the other member, 3. Other member builds the song, 4. Members leave the country, 5. Pallers return home with the finalized record. PRESS: "The melodies are as vibrant as you'd expect from this indie-pop-oriented label, but there's a lot to admire in the production, too, from little details like the rattling percussion or murmured half-words at the intro, to the shuffling snares on the verses. "PITCHFORK "...lush colours and arms without muscles come to mind, when you're listening to 'humdrum'. Androgyny galore. it's a brilliant track." DISCODUST "Dark and dreamy throughout, Humdrum explores a territory between Junior Boys and the more atmospheric moments of M83." HYPERBOLE "Sweden's famous indie label Labrador is blessing us with yet more of this kind of dreamy dance music by releasing the debut EP from Pallers on December 3rd." BIZARRELOVETRIANGLES "There's a haunting pulse of melodrama throughout and we're pretty sure it's going to consume you for the minutes you listen to it. You'll press repeat for sure. " THE CULTURE OF ME "Latenight beach jam, perfect for a chilly October evening..." GROOVE COOKIE "Continuing my current run of Nordic and Swedish music I've found a new love, Pallers." EVEN IF YOU DON'T, YOU DO.

Pop Levi
Never Never Love
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

Scarlet's Well
Gatekeeper
PS, SPAIN In the beginning, Scarlet's Well was Bid (of Monochrome Set fame) accompanied by a fluctuating cast of girlish singers, esoteric musicians and random collaborators. It was a beautiful but primarily solo vision. Lavishly illustrated albums emerged quietly, all set in the vicinity of a place called Mousseron, "a sickly village situated somewhere east of the Azores and only slightly north of the Styx" populated by howling wolves, seductive mermaids and a bawdy captain with his crew of beer-swilling pirates and off-kilter animals with disturbingly human characteristics. Seven albums have now been released and with the most recent two: Black Tulip Wings (2006) and Gatekeeper (2008) Scarlet's Well has evolved into a band in its own right, with live gigs, collaborative song writing, luscious merchandise, tantrums and uncorroborated suggestions of bizarre fantasies. A sense of band empathy and the benefits of varied influences are evident in both these albums but there is still a thematic consistency. Although there is a conceptual thread that runs through the albums, the songs still function as pop in the sweetest sense, i.e. they are catchy, you can sing along (if you must) and most are dance friendly. What make them special is their unpredictability and the dizzying range of musical genres combined with an essence that is simply 'Scarlet's Well'. It's Whirling Dervish meets gypsy troubadour with the crack of a whip on the rump of a unicorn ... then it gets fey and funky. Lyrics leap from cryptic literary allusions to pert whimsy and although there is a certain obscure quality there is also an air of familiarity: a morphic memory thing bringing on a parallel universe that reveals itself to those who are open to getting lost with new acquaintances down strange cobbled streets, wooded glades, uncharted waters or the dark tunnels of the underworld. Bid describes it better in 'November Night' from Gatekeeper, "Strange songs playing, so darkly chanted with words I feel but don't understand." While Peter Momtchiloff emphasizes the benefits of collaboration with New Friends, "We are your new friends, if the night ever ends it will feel as if we've always been here." Scarlet's Well is a big band - eight members in all - but the sound, although rich and multi-layered is surprisingly light and charming.

Scene Is Now, The
Tonight We Ride
PS, AUSTRALIA Between the years 1984 and 1988, The Scene Is Now released three magnificent albums which have been out of print for a dog's age and have never seen the light of day on compact disk -- until now. This exclusive Lexicon Devil CD reissue of the band's third album, Tonight We Ride, has been fully remastered from original tapes by the band. Some folks compared them to the Red Krayola or Pere Ubu, some to SST outfits such as the Meat Puppets and Slovenly, and some people even hail them as the world's finest no wave jug band. The Scene Is Now (TSIN) were formed at the dawn of the 1980s by Philip Dray and Chris Nelson, a band born from the ashes of no wave trio Information (the third partner of that outfit being Rick Brown). The beauty of TSIN lies in their deceptive simplicity. What at first appears to be a straightforward, rootsy rock tune twists and turns throughout its lifespan into something completely different, keyboard lines and guitar licks darting out to and fro and seemingly pulling in different directions. The Scene Is Now remain -- as indeed they still exist -- one of the great post-Beefheart harmolodic American pop bands. Influenced equally by the ragged avant-folk sounds of the Holy Modal Rounders and the Fugs, the screech of DNA and Mars, and the traditional Americana of Bob Wills and Hoagy Carmichael, TSIN instantly set themselves apart from the pack. If you like the music of their fans -- Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo (who covered an old TSIN track on their Fakebook LP) -- the music of their peers -- Mofungo, Pere Ubu, dBs, Fish & Roses, The Feelies -- or the sounds of their acknowledged influences -- Sun Ra, Red Krayola, Minutemen -- you'll love the music of The Scene Is Now. Their music was an indefinable mixture of the old and new, the impenetrable and the accessible and the weird and wonderful. Certainly the most accessible of the three, this album features the added talents of ex-dBs Will Rigby and Pere Ubu wunderkind Tony Maimone, expanding the TSIN clan to a family of six. Playing it 20 years after its original release, it still stands tall as one of the great, virtually unknown albums from 1980s underground America.

Shackleton/Appleblim/Peverelist
Soundboy's Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals
PS, UK The final chapter in the Skull Disco story has arrived, in the shape of a 2CD compilation, Soundboy's Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals. Shackleton and Appleblim have decided to call time on the label, which over the past three years has acted as a platform mainly for their own productions, with one-off contributions from Bristolians Gatekeeper and Peverelist. Although Skull Disco will be sorely missed, massive respect to Shack and 'Blim for quitting while they're ahead and leaving behind a small but perfectly formed body of work that helped evolve and re-define bass music for the 21st century. Disc one of Soundboy's Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals collects all the tracks from SKULL006 to SKULL010, except Ricardo Villalobos's groundbreaking remix of Shackleton's Blood on My Hands (SKULL007), which found its way onto the first Skull Disco CD compilation, Soundboy Punishments. Highlights include Appleblim's dub-techno masterpiece 'Vansan' and brooding Peverelist collaborations 'Circling' and 'Over Here,' as well as Shackleton's 'Death Is Not Final' and the previously unreleased original mix of 'Shortwave.' Disc two is dedicated to remixes of Skull Disco tracks. Some have been released before, like the Pole remix of 'Shortwave' (originally out on -scape), Brendan Moeller's 'Over Here' version and T++'s frankily terrifying re-work of 'Death Is Not Final'; but others, by the likes of DJ/Rupture, Geiom, Badawi and Bass Clef, are new. T++'s long-awaited mix of 'Vansan' also finally sees the light of day here. As with all Skull Disco releases, Soundboy's Gravestone is packaged in terrific artwork by the inimitable Zeke Clough.

Shepherd, Alfie
The Wind In The Willows
PS, UK In 1969, Angel Pavement linchpin Alfie Shepherd took time out from the group's hectic schedule to demo a concept album that he'd written around his favorite childhood story, Kenneth Grahame's The Wind In The Willows. Sadly Angel Pavement broke up before they'd had a chance to record the work, which was duly left to gather dust. Forty years later, Alfie's homemade recording of the proposed album finally gains a long-overdue release. Taken from the original mastertapes, and bolstered by a clutch of similarly unissued home demos from the same timeframe, The Wind In The Willows is now revealed as one of the great lost projects of the late 1960s, a thrilling psychedelic pop song-suite bursting with melodic invention, ambitious vocal arrangements and the boundless spirit of adventure that characterized the era.

Shindig! Annual Number One
PS, UK "The Shindig! Annual Number One serves up a tasty treat, with a selection of features brimming with passion. The artists covered in this annual range from the well known: The Move (the last in-depth interview with original singer Carl Wayne), The Love Affair (the UK pop/soul act that were the most talked-about UK group for a number of months in 1968) and Buffalo Springfield (Neil Young, Steven Stills; say no more). The now legendary: John's Children (a massive interview with singer Andy Ellison and drummer Chris Townsen), Jesse Hector (the original space-age mod whose style and attitude influenced a number of glam and punk acts). The now highly regarded: SRC (the Detroit band who ran their own studio and were friends with the stars), Kaleidoscope (England's most loved unsuccessful '60s pop act), The Action (utter stylists produced by George Martin), Grapefruit (more-than-pretty-boy Beatles protégés) and Les Fleur De Lys (who out-did The Who on their Immediate version of 'Circles'). All these articles first appeared in the out-of-print Volume 1 series of Shindig! Magazine. They have been redesigned with new illustrations and additional photographs. Hardback, full-color, 111pp."

Silent Land Time Machine
Hope Still
PS, US Digital version of the sold out LP. Pretty hard to pin this one down, but its a trip for sure. A rather mysterious one man band solo outing from Texas, who builds up layer upon layer of violin, viola, acoustic guitar, slippery electric slide, percussion, electronics, accordion, buried vocals, & found sounds into haunted, rollicking, thick sonic blankets of sound. Many simple parts entwined, looped, & orchestrated into an undulating whole, like naive bedroom folk rock filtered through some blissed out minimalist phase experiment. Ecstatic, post-psychedelic chamber rock maybe? Edition of 500

Sin Fang Bous
Clangour
PS, GERMANY This is the debut release by Reykjavik's Sindri Mar Sigfusson (Seabear) as Sin Fang Bous. Clangour is an album and a project that was a total surprise to Morr Music and to himself. Gravitational processes, drifts, accumulations, miniatures, a voice, a guitar, changing textures and re-colored leaves -- these are pocket symphonies in the vein of Brian Wilson. Songs, sounds and samples are crystal-clear and yet able to raise a storm. For example, "Advent In Ives Garden" is a greenhouse paradise of melody miniatures and sound pieces, and "Catch The Light" showcases Sindri's voice in choir-form. In this project there is a direct, intuitive sound that recalls Seabear, but that also embraces a pop naivety without embarrassment. Electronic squiggles, rallying percussion and a mishmash of guitars and vocals, this is a euphoric release in the spirit of Animal Collective, Caribou or Panda Bear, all wrapped up with a charming homemade pop bow.

Spacemen 3
DJ Tones
PS, UK Spacemen 3 have a limited edition (2000 copies) 5 track mini-album released by Space Age Recordings in cardboard sleeve wallet on October 20th which features 2 previously unreleased Spacemen 3 tracks, a radically different mix of the classic Spacemen 3 cover of the Red Krayola's 'Transparent Radiation' and appearing for the first time on CD, the ultra rare remix of 'I Love You' (originally only 50 promo white label vinyl copies were ever pressed). Rounding off this mini-album is a studio version of Ecstasy Symphony. Track listing: These Blues Transparent Radiation (violin mix) Modulated Tones I Love You (remix) Ecstasy Symphony Spacemen 3 consisted of the core duo of Jason Pierce (Spiritualized) and Sonic Boom a.k.a Peter Kember (Spectrum & E.A.R.) who formed the group in Rugby , Warwickshire, having met at art college. Other members of what would become a fluid lineup over the years included Pete Bain (Bassman, also of The Darkside), Natty Brooker, Sterling Roswell (Rosco), Will Carruthers, Jonny Mattock (Slipstream), and for the final few shows, Mark Refoy (also of Slipstream). From the outset Spacemen 3 had a very defined set of aesthetic principles. They based almost their entire sound on their own concept of minimalism - droning guitars, feedback, as few chords as possible, pounding drums - with their motto 'Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to'. Their minimalism bled into their stage show as well. Sitting down to play their guitars and covered in the spinning colours of a cheap psychedelic light show, their stage 'act' was very anti-performance. Another striking aspect of Spacemen 3 was their willingness to cover and share their influences. Song titles, lyrics and interviews were peppered with references to bands and artists they believed shared their 'minimal is maximal' aesthetic. The Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, the Stooges, the MC5, early Captain Beefheart, free jazz musician Sun Ra, the Silver Apples, 1960s garage punk such as the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, the Electric Prunes, the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and other surf bands, 1980s rockabilly groups the Cramps, the Gun Club, Tav Falco, blues and gospel acts like Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, the Staple Singers and John Lee Hooker, and the production techniques of Joe Meek, Brian Wilson and Delia Derbyshire were just some of the names mentioned by the band.

Spectrum & Silver Apples
A Lake of Teardrops [re-issue]
PS, UK Pete Kember a.k.a. Sonic Boom of Spectrum worked with the seminal 60's act Silver Apples on a six track mini album originally released by Space Age Recordings in 1998. Having been out of print for many years now a limited re-pressing of 500 copies will be available from 20th October to meet demand for this release. From the opening surging waves of 'Streams Of Sorrow' with its controlled chaos and intoxicating vocals, through 'The Edge's' mesmerizing monotone backing to Simeon's 90's beat poetry - like Allen Ginsberg reincarnated into his most abstract nightmare, 'Whirlwind' with its plaintive vocals and warped ambience held together by a trademark Sonic Boom drone pattern, to '(I Don't Care if You) Never Come Back's' almost industrial-tribal percussion, fleshed out by those unique Silver Apples oscillations and Spectrum's ever present sense of wayward genius. 'A Lake Of Teardrops' is a spellbinding trip into the minds of two of the finest experimental composers ever.

The bursts of tones & grip on formal structures can compare to the best of Hototogisu or Handful of Dust, though filtered through an ample dose of Ash Ra Tempel. Swaths of heavy feedback cascade against sinister organ workouts & varied percussion that's at times pounding & at others distant.

Fading Yellow Volume 8
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'Hymns for Today: UK Pop-Folk-Sike Sounds 1968-1975'. Limited Edition eighth installment of this very fine compilation series that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche sounds from the UK circa 1968-75. If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "It's been a long hiatus but at last here are two excellent new volumes of the cult Fading Yellow series. Vol. 8 is collection of British artist album tracks of the period 1968-75... A beautiful confection of pastoral shades and cotton wool clouds floating in a hazy Summer sky. Predominantly mid-paced and lightly orchestrated, these are often acoustic based songs with electric underpinning. A few, in the interval, have become more familiar, notably the two fine selections by Jan & Lorraine from their recently reissued Gipsy People album. The majority however will be new to your ears. The track selection and flow is pretty much faultless as one track melts effortlessly into the next, working its magic on the ears. In some instances, tracks are surprising reworkings of the most unlikely songs. For instance Raw's (aka New York Public Library) rendition of 'What To Do', from their US and Germany released only Raw Holly album consists of covers of Buddy Holly songs - this one is an orchestrated tabla and sitar version! There are the short sharp spurts like the enigmatic (because there is nothing known about him) Michael Blount with 'Acorn Street' from his 1971 Patchwork album, which at 1.58 leaves you wanting a lot more of the same. P.C. Kent's 'After Dark' is from their self-titled Deram Nova album and is pleasingly pop (think a lighter version of Blossom Toes's 'Postcard' for instance) whilst Vigrass & Osborne's 'Ballerina' (which was also a single or a B side I think) has all the atmosphere, heavy with pathos of Mike Batt's series title track 'Fading Yellow' from Vol.1. Storyteller's 'Alice Brown', Fuchsia's 'Me And My Kite' and Evensong's 'The Smallest Man In The World' are also excellent. Overall, the FY signature brand of soundscape is very much perpetuated here and fans of the series will lap this up. There are as usual liner notes and band pics in the booklet which help contextualise the music nicely. Buy with confidence."

Fading Yellow Volume 9
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'The Other Side of Life: Timeless UK Pop-Sike & Other Delights, 1966-1972'. Limited Edition ninth installment of this very fine compilation series that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche sounds from the UK circa 1968-75. If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "Here we are squarely back in singles territory. Pop Workshop's 'Fairyland' is a good starter and manages to be both brash and gentle at the same time. Suzi Klee's 'Punch And Judy Girl' is a plaintive and tremulous pop ballad by this 'Swiss Miss' (I've always wanted to use that somewhere!); it comes across like Jan and Lorraine produced by Mike Batt (only it was produced by Georgio Gomelsky!). Dave Christie's 'Penelope Breedlove' makes its commercial compilation debut (and is also included on Psychic Circle's Fairytales Can Come True comp also out this month); a fabulous and atmospheric pean to the object of his affections, this is NOT the same version as the 6AX acetate compiled on Syde Tryps Vol.7. Although it's the same song, the two versions are markedly different in arrangement and timing, so you certainly need both. Pussyfoot's 'Hasty Words' is another beauty with its lilting 3/3 waltz timing and a lovely choral vocal job to boot. Mike Leslie's 'Office Girl' has been a long time want of mine in the original, a delightful ode to a lonely clerical worker lost in the urban crowd as the singer puckers up the courage to approach her. It deserved to be more than a B side too. Rodney Bewes' 'Dear Mother Love Albert' is the topside to the already compiled and much sought after 'Meter Maid' and it has a similar vibe - was this the actual TV series signature tune or was it written as a single in its own right I wonder? It sounds way too magically bendy for 1970 television! Christian's 'Other Side Of Life' is another restless orch popper with more than a passing reminder of The Apple's 'Other Side' as well. A good string arrangement adds a lot to it. Tony Ritchie seems to have recorded quite a few sides in Europe including the excellent 'Rain On My Window' included here with its urgent "loner" vibe that would have suited Paul & Barry Ryan for instance c.1967. Maybe it's about time a Tony Ritchie anthology was compiled? This is another excellent collection of emotionally challenging sides. You may encounter some of these sides individually occasionally but it is only when they are compiled with this level of aesthetic skill that they fully bloom."

MMM050
PS, UK Make Mine Music releases a collection of exclusive tracks showcasing the work of artists on the innovative label, as it reaches its landmark 50th release on Monday 24 November. The compilation includes new recruits Piano Magic and Calder, label favorites Epic45 and the musical return of label founder Scott Sinfield aka Portal. After quietly releasing a range of critically acclaimed albums and EPs, Make Mine Music now boldly states its manifesto. These are difficult times for the music industry with file sharing, illegal downloads and falling sales. The traditional music business model is failing and record labels are scrabbling to find a way to survive. Artists too are campaigning for better copyright laws and greater shares of royalties through coalitions. But these still rely on an outdated model of releasing music. For Make Mine Music, this isn't a crisis. It's a golden opportunity. Make Mine Music is a truly radical independent label, run and owned by the artists themselves. The artists pay for the manufacture and promotion of their own records and correspondingly receive 100% of any income generated. There are no management pockets to line, no shareholders to please, no restrictive contracts or demands placed upon the artists. Six years and 50 releases after its inception, Make Mine Music is proof that there is another way. It's time for other artists and labels to catch up. Tracklisting: Millimetrik Ignacio Ramonet et le Metronidazole, Avrocar Two Silver Czars, Schengen The Prince (From Ueno), The Doldrums Try A New Thing, Glen Johnson A Pause in the Night, Portal Prana (Slow Burner), Piano Magic Western Gothic, Yellow6 Day in Pripyat, Planivaar Slow Motion, Epic45 In All the Empty Houses, All Sides Marathon, Innerise Dreams at E38th Street, Weyland No, I Don't Want to be Part of Your Story, Still Crescent In A Northern Landscape, Jelly Antler Back to School (Original Edit), Calder Old.

Mechanic Side Of Nature Part 1 of 4
PS, GERMANY With the first Circle Music compilation The World Of Circle the label presented itself as a community of artists, as a family, that proclaimed continuous movement, pure power and brilliant soundscapes in various styles which have these three attributes in common. With the new Circle compilation Mechanic Side Of Nature, now released as compilation EP series, the dualism of nature and life is represented in the mechanic character of electronic music art. By that it is possible to give the issue of Circle Music the face of its music: Reflecting life consequently with electronic music and digital sound poems in all its facets. On the first part Valentino Kanzyani, Toni Rios, Stryke and Audio Injection are presenting their tracks. A1 -- Valentino Kanzyani 'Valkanizateur': The co-founder of Recycled Loops and label head of Jesus Loved You created a very techy and dark dancefloor smasher with filtered synthesizer sounds squaring the listener with sharp sound design. The vocals come directly out of hell and the percussions are washing every clear thought out of the brain. This track is a killer. A2 -- Toni Rios 'Old Man's Chord':Toni Rios' track 'Old Man's Chord' convinces with deep and sensual vocals as well as with strong beats and nice synthesizer structures. There is no breathtaking while the track is not overloaded with effects or too many elements that would close the room for any possibility to move in it. The German techno legend shows one more time he is having everything under control. B1 -- Stryke 'Little Miracles': DJ Stryke, famous for his releases on labels like Monoid, Droid, Circle of course, Ovum or Strictly Hype since the early nineties, this man from Florida creates a sound army of robots that are in a very bad mood. Stomping everything down that stands in their way they are reaching far into the sky to grab every single star out of it. B2 -- Audio Injection 'Droid Attack': Out of L.A. Audio Injection brings the next 'Droid Attack' to the dancefloor. Releasing on labels like Monoid, Droid Recordings, Stimulus or Tyrisia, David F. is home at every style of techno music one could imagine. His androids are the more computer like beings. With weird ringing sounds of changing organic stuff into electronic they are showing, the machines are coming.

Utah's Mormon, mountain isolation occasionally kicks out some of the wildest underground stuff going (see Le Force, Red Bennies, Fuck the Informer, Agape, Wolfs, etc.) & VBS bring their unique type of bizarre, compelling music to a gape-jawed West. Reference points abound: VBS are a little bit Gibby Haynes, part James Chance, part Andy Gill, part lots of things, but as far as new bands go they are an unusual, visceral, sleazy spectacle. Comes w/ free download card of the album & fantastic cover art!

We The People
Too Much Noise
PS, US Garage fans agree: We The People's ragin', tough-as-nails punk tracks 'Mirror of Your Mind' and 'You Burn Me Up and Down' rate among the era's best. But believe it or not, this band was capable of even more. Along with the above two hammer-down classics, Too Much Noise collates everything, the seminal -- and surprisingly diverse -- Central Florida outfit cut for the Challenge label during the band's mid-'60s heyday, including the raga-rock fave 'In The Past' (covered by the Chocolate Watchband) and the tender folk-rock ballad '(You Are) The Color of Love.' Sourced from the original analog masters, here are We the People's three scarce and essential Challenge single sides plus material recorded for the label but unreleased at the time -- all of it in raw, skull-crushing fidelity on CD and high-definition vinyl.

Winderen, Jana
Surface Runoff
PS, US Surface runoff is when soil is filled with excess water from rain, snowmelt, etc., and its subsequent flow of excess onto land. This cycle, and the dependence of life on water, is reflected in these hot and cold recordings made by Jana Winderen. Uniquely able to co-exist in its three natural states, of gas, liquid and solid, water is our most precious resource. Without it we die. Surface Runoff is the first in a new series of 7" releases.

W/ a plethora of critically-acclaimed releases already under their own respective belts incl. their own solo debut albums for Tirk (as Sorcerer) & Lo Recordings (as Hatchback), Coastlines could well be hailed as a modern day "cosmic disco/slo-mo house" classic. Described as "Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese meets Steely Dan" says Internasjonal/Full Pupp label boss & Lindstrøm collaborator, PRINS THOMAS. In fact, Thomas was already doing remixes for both Daniel and Sam's solo projects before he even realized they were Windsurf. XELA
In Bocca Al Lupo
PS, UK This is the fourth full-length release from Manchester-based Xela (John Twells), and his second release on his own Type label imprint. In 2006, he released the horror-flecked epic The Dead Sea. Taking influence from the movies of Dario Argento and Umberto Lenzi and fusing them with a Lovecraftian concept, he created the perfect tribute to his obsession. Every good horror movie has a sequel, and for this full-length follow-up, John has used the dark corners of the Christian religion as his guide. Composed initially for a fear-themed Chicago art installation, the 60-minute piece gradually took shape as a celebration of desolate cellars and distant church bells, the things that truly scare him. Researching further took him to Spain and Italy as he explored basilicas, cathedrals and crumbling churches in search of inspiration. Ancient stories, whispered histories and sounds drifting through generations became the basis of the recording, which is split into four distinct parts. Beginning with metallic scrapes and haunting industrial soundscapes, we drift among fluidly dense drones, electrical hums and crumbling noise. Like a doom-laden take on the crunching assault of Hair Police or a noisy version of David Lynch's Eraserhead soundtrack, the music is stripped down to the bare bones of what is necessary. Before long, we hit the record's central piece, "In Deo Salutari Meo" which takes an almost funereal tone, using religious bells as the primary sound source. Eventually the album climaxes on the longest piece, "Beatae Immortalitatis," which features Heavy Winged's Jed Bindeman on drums. Bindeman was last seen lending his percussive skills to "Calling For Vanished Faces" which appeared on the Xela/MGR split earlier in 2008, and here his pummeling beats accompany John's icy oscillator tones. Like a freeform Pan Sonic, this takes heavy electronic music into a frightening new place, ending in a thick cloud of screams and crackle. One might even call it a religious experience.

PS, US Another in ZUM MEDIA's split 7" series (following their popular split w/ Abe Vigoda/Mikaela's Fiend). This split pairs NYC prog brutalists Zs & CHILD ABUSE. Child Abuse feat. members of Dig That Body Up...It's Alive, Optimists International, Murder Murder, Meths, ABK, & Sheath. Their contributions incl. a version of a Dolphy tune "Hat & Beard," along w/ the synth squak of "Conversations." Zs have enchanted & confounded many since their 2000 conception in Manhattan. Output by the band has found homes on labels such as Troubleman Unlimited, Planaria, Gilgongo, & 31G. "In My Dream I Shot A Monk" harkens to the vintage sextet formation that dovetails nicely w/ their current output, an aggro vocal workout of epic man-angst. Cover artwork by John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees)

Bookish, Simon
Everything/Everything (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US Vinyl Version! An unpredictable and dramatic "big band song cycle about science and information", Everything/Everything is a new departure for Simon Bookish, being his first album for TOMLAB. Additionally, whilst previous Simon Bookish releases have been informed by the sounds of digital synthesizers, Everything/Everything does away with them entirely to focus on live instruments. Scored for an ensemble dominated by saxophones, brass, piano, harp and Far sa organ, it features luminaries from both the jazz and experimental classical music scenes. Whilst this is almost certainly his most pop oriented release to date, Everything/Everything, as it's name suggests, nds room for moments of racing Philip Glass minimalism, lop-sided disco, expressionist cabaret, and even an eery ambient interlude. Lyrically, the album's concept is "the - good of information" in our modern age, taking in chemistry and ecology, language and art, sometimes surreal, sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, a weird blur of fact and action, delivered in Bookish's distinctive English eccentric vocal. It's only natural that Simon Bookish would want to tackle this chaos of stuff, since 'Simon Bookish' is the pseudonym of London-based composer Leo Chadburn, whose diverse recent work has included everything from sound-art installations in Bregenz, Austria, improvisation and guest spots with Leafcutter John and Polar Bear's Seb Rochford, and computer music for contemporary dance at the Royal Opera House to an acclaimed appearance with the National Theatre as "The Singer" in Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle".

FW are another band who traffic in the slooooooooow & heavy, but they definitely give it their own twist. Not sludgy like SUNNO))) or their legions of followers, & not really noisy like many of their countrymen. Instead they're some sort of strange downtuned slowcore mathrock. Massive basses (that's right. no guitars!) churn & throb, the drums a crushing pound, over the top, drawn out wailing 'leads', all the makings of a proper rock band, but instead they fuck it all up... laced w/ all sorts of killer melodies, making it sound like a doomed version of June Of 44 or Engine Kid"

Flaherty, Paul
Aria Nativa (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US "Aria Nativa" is more than PAUL FLAHERTY'S third solo saxophone album; it merges rhapsodic avant garde music, patriotic dream verse, and mortality into a frighteningly pure work of audio, visual and literary sledge. Recorded during a pair of 2007 performances, its four pieces capture lifeblood in stunning detail from foot stomps to gut hollers and crowd roars as Flaherty's free power blues dips into the well of wretchedness and raises with fists of mirth. It's the sorta record that splays naked the artist for all: equal parts wise ass and universal vision. From his early 1970s woodshedding through a dozen plus albums each with drum buddies Randall Colburne and Chris Corsano, and collaborators Bill Nace, Wally Shoup and Sunburned Man of the Hand, Flaherty remains a total wildcat - on and off the alto/tenor horns. For this LP his massive tonal craft is equally matched by Ken Hill's gorgeous cover shot of a snow blown grave and "No More America" - Ken DelPonte's epic poem that spans nearly five decades and fills the back jacket, framing the atmosphere the music was recorded under. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for MP3 version of the album that includes a bonus track of "No More America" read by the author.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE ????)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Ocean
Pantheon Of The Lesser (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US 2xLP to follow in about one month. Following their acclaimed breakthrough debut album that caught the ears of critics and fans worldwide, and became Important's highest selling album, Ocean has returned with their forward thinking, brutally heavy and purely minimalist sophomore album Pantheon Of The Lesser. Pantheon Of The Lesser was composed over a period of two years in Ocean's home studio in Portland, Maine. As the seasons passed each track was written, re-written, played and then re-played as layers were slowly stripped away until the true essence of the song was revealed. Once Ocean entered the studio it took another two years to deconstruct Pantheon Of The Lesser until they had found the essence of their writing. This disciplined deconstructionist approach to songwriting is how Pantheon Of The Lesser is how Ocean takes it to the next level of the abyss. The result of this compositional technique is over an hour of strictly bare instrumentation and a kind of natural heaviness that slowly rises and falls in a pure organic fashion. Everything in it's own time. Simply profound. Heavy like Schoenberg. While Ocean continues to explore and expand upon their "less is more" approach of profound musical minimalism and sheer heaviness, Pantheon Of The Lesser is a bit more musical than its predecessor. The Beacon, the opening track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, was played as Ocean's complete set on a recent US tour and on dates with Mono and Boris. Clocking in at 41 minutes on record and over an hour live; The Beacon evolves in 3 distinct movements with fleeting moments of hypnotic melody and earth shaking heavy dirges creating an all-encompassing tone of pure misanthropy. The second and final track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, titled Of The Lesser, carries a similar theme of misery. Written as an ode to distraction, chemical and otherwise, it is Ocean at their most personal: a pure sonic stream of consciousness in slow motion. Packaged in a deluxe foil printed heavy-duty cardboard jacket with art by renowned Maine illustrator Bruce Hutchison. The vinyl version is packaged in double 200 gram vinyl, packaged in deluxe letter pressed covers and limted to 500 copies.

One More Grain
Scarborough Fair (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 16th)
PS, UK OMG formed in the summer of 2006; with their first album 'Pigeon English' being released on that bellwether of independent labels Victory Garden. 'Isle of Grain' followed in January 2008 on White Heat grabbing album of the week in the Sunday Times (5 out of 5 stars) and the band needing a wheelbarrow to carry the positive reviews. The single 'Having a Ball' was unlikely championed by Radio One tosser Zane Lowe. Scarborough Fair' has the village fair fancifulness of Paul Simon's tinkering arrangement replaced by a both haunting and decidedly enchanting yet darker and more forthrightly trippy affair; a mind-warping, dream-like dub collage. Either a lysergic haven located deep in the mindset of Sun Ra, or a hazily atmospheric, drugged feel as if It's Immaterial were produced by Martin Hannett. It's a deeply engaging and crafted reclaiming of a folk foundation stone. 'Giriama Wedding' another traditional arrangement but this time a Kenyan wedding song which apparently was stumbled upon by way of a release on the legendary Nonesuch Explorer imprint, entitled 'Witchcraft and Ritual Music'. A dizzyingly up-tempo and frenetic gem that provides for a hot thick stew of wired, squirreling ska-like brass arrangements, all woven into an acutely vibrant and weirdly sultry ethnic pop song. If we weren't any the wiser we'd have hedged our bets by saying it was the Contortions in a grueling stare-down with Pigbag Edition of 500 on 7" vinyl. For fans of Early Factory Records, Martin Carthy, The Fall, Martin Hannett and Terry Riley.

Rebel, Miss Lana
All I Need (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US Real-deal American country music has its roots in the anti-government encampments of born-disaffected Scots Irish settlers in Appalachian America. Those dark hills & hollers are where folks immigrated in order to get away, to not participate in the sorts of activities that most folks thought they should as part of civilization. When these folks picked up instruments the stories & poems of loss, freedom, often death & once in a while hope began to flow like corn whiskey from an earthenware jug. In that way, we daresay real country's more punk than punk. LANA REBEL & her band continue in that authentic tradition of Spartan, Appalachian/Western country, w/out the political endorsements (real county's as apolitical as you can get), dumb hooks or the need to participate in a genre fronted by a qualifying adjective ("new", "alt" or otherwise). Get ready to have some stories told to you. 'All I Need' will get tears in your Coors, & a lump in your throat.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Sigur Ros
Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US This album glows with the perfect imperfection of live takes, the sounds of fingers playing guitar strings, cracked notes, and a stark, up front presence not found in previous recordings; moving away from reverb-soaked guitar sounds towards something altogether more affecting. It also contains some of the most joyous music Sigur Ros has ever recorded. "Old fashioned psychedelic grandeur...is revived with otherworldly majesty and inexorable crescendos¿a typically majestic but uncharacteristically summery album, with jolts of percussive energy and connotations of sunlight and air" - NY Times. Skeletons
Money (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US VINYL VERSION! Already up so early in the morning of 2008, SKELETONS were hibernating in the safest, quietest, warmest place in the world: Times Square, New York. In a haunted WWII-era ballroom they recorded through the wintry nights when the studio was on fire. Taking breaks at 5am, standing under heat lamps listening to Hot Jazz outside the Time Warp Hotel, soaking up the empty streets with the leftover creeps while the tourists sleep. It's just the same struggle any old human has to go through to make anything: make it to work on time, make an excuse, make babies, make war, make breakfast without getting into a fight. The child of this struggle is "Money", pre-made, for you, entering the world October 7th in the USA, and October 28th in the UK and Europe via TOMLAB.

Tallest Man On Earth, The
Shallow Grave (PRE-ORDER: DELAYED, SALEABLE TBA)
PS, SWEDEN Incredible new album, Pitchfork approved. If you thought the EP was great, just wait until this arrives. Folk album of the year? Price to be confirmed, it might be better, it won't be worse. PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

PS, US VINYL VERSION of TTMOE's first album and his debut EP! Limited to 1000! Whether it's The Tallest Man on Earth's lo-fi tape recording technique or penetrating vocal stylings, Shallow Grave authentically represents a tradition of Americana folk rock that was popularized during the 50s and 60s. PASTE MAGAZINE: "The Tallest Man on Earth, like Dylan before him, grounds his songs in Son House- and Blind Willie McTell-inspired guitar work, lofting tempestuous vocals overhead and garninshing liberally with "babe"s and "honey"s." The Mexican Summer release follows his critially acclaimed 2007 five-song self-titled EP and a well deserved Pitchfork 8.3 album rating for Shallow Grave. The Tallest Man on Earth, will be playing to North American audiences this December alongside genre companion Bon Iver.

Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering, 32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar music.
