Parasol New Arrivals • October 2, 2007

Moshi moshi,

All right friends, you’re never going to believe this. Strap on your seatbelts because you’re seriously never going to believe this! Okay, here we go. First of all, it’s Tuesday again and Paul and I are fixing to bombard you with another list of New Release craziness to help ease your brain though the workweek.

Second of all, I’m having a hard time stomaching the fact that its already October, but so far I’m finding peace knowing that Band Of Horses, Jens Lekman, Prefuse 73, Karate, Nick Castro & Young Elders, and Black Dice will all have new releases out later this month.

Third of all, I’ll stop eyeballin’ the future and focus on the present. I’m pleading with you to treat your thirsty ears to the new Richard Hawley album. Seriously, Lady's Bridge will leave your mind saying "Have you ever heard somebody write so much good music?"

Well then, we’ll sign off now so you can get to diggin’.

Dig deeper,

Royal & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Richard Hawley "Lady’s Bridge" CD $15.25 (Mute)
Yet another masterpiece from UK crooner Richard Hawley (former guitarist for Pulp and before that The Longpigs), the follow-up to the melancholy magic of his Mercury Prize nominated/shortlisted Coles Corner album from 2005. Once again Hawley dresses his smokey Elvis-meets-Roy Orbison-meets-Scott Walker baritone in all manner of timeless orchestral pop finery, as lush as the lush lever would lush it. A devastating pop record, one of the year's best. Perhaps it's time turn that 2005 Mercury Prize nomination for Coles Corner into a full on trip to the podium? Lady's Bridge might be his ticket to ride. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Songwriter, guitarist, and producer Richard Hawley is celebrated by everyone from Scott Walker to former Pulp vocalist and bandmate Jarvis Cocker to Robbie Williams. The reason is simple: Over three albums and an EP, Hawley’s rich blend of rock and roll's past, sophisticated pop and emotionally engaging music is undeniable in its integrity and its beauty." Allen, Daevid
Good Morning!
PS, UK In 1975, following his departure from GONG, the highly influential group he had founded, Daevid Allen sought musical solace in the village of Deja on the island of Mallorca. Here he encountered a group of Catalan musicians, Euterpe, with whom Allen began collaborating. Recorded in Mallorca, the album "GOOD MORNING" was released by Virgin Records in 1976 to great acclaim, being a unique work that was regarded by fans and critics as being equally as good as anything he recorded with GONG, if not better. Filled with Allen's startling original musical observations, "GOOD MORNING" appeared briefly on CD in the early 1990's and vanished quickly. Long sought after by the legions of GONG / DAEVID ALLEN followers, ESOTERIC RECORDINGS is proud to announce the reissue of this album with fully restored artwork and superb 24-bit digitally remastered sound. THE FIRST EVER OFFICIAL CD RELEASE FOR THIS CLASSIC ALBUM IN SIXTEEN YEARS.

Brian Jonestown Massacre
Bringing It All Back Home Again
PS, US Re-issue of this 1999 mini-album features 6 acoustic lullabies, but don't be fooled. This is a sexed & drugged Ozarkian attempt at paying tribute to hero Bob Dylan. Includes a Charles Manson cover, of course. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The sound of Bringing It All Back Home Again is comparable to that of their previous Thank God for Mental Illness -- mostly acoustic and country-tinged, reminiscent (as the title suggests) of the period when Bob Dylan was making the transition from acoustic to electric material, as well as the sort of country shuffles that popped up on some Rolling Stones records. Yet the record isn't a slavish imitation of either, with the Massacre affecting a more rural, lonesome-sounding tone and a moodier, more deliberate pace; the more traditional feel meshes well with Anton Newcombe's twisting of country-gospel lyrical clichés into rock & roll attitude."

Broughton, David Thomas
David Thomas Broughton vs. 7 Herz

Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind
PS, US .Re-mastered from a rare existing copy of the original, this is a classic Stonesstyle pop stomper w/a rich, full orchestral effect & Bunyan's inimitable vocals as the center-point. Butane Variations
S-T
PS, US Debut full length from the Brooklyn/NYC six channels the flawless country-rock sound of The Band, the complex instrumental atmospheres of Drag City-era Jim O'Rourke, and the tightly coiled vocal harmonies of Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - all into a category that we are quite comfortably unable to define. From an odd whirlpool of banjo plucks, unhinged cello cries, searing synth lines, and heavily fuzzed-out guitar stabs , this album is charasmatic and dis-arming. Recently played w/ Dirty On Purpose.

Cherry, Don
Live at Cafe Montmartre
PS, US More than any other artist in the jazz of his era,Cherry pioneered the music's internationalist nature that has now come to be commonly accepted as an integral part of its character. The individuality of Cherry's contribution to the history of jazz has often been unfairly obscured by his admittedly important association with the music of Ornette Coleman. While the (pocket) trumpeter's position as Coleman's front line partner in the altoist's first revolutionary quartet was indeed a major one,Cherry's role as one of the founders of the genre that is known today as "world music" is equally significant. -Russ Musto.Incl bonus DVD w/ selections of almost every ESP artist. Club 8
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming
PS, SWEDEN Club 8 is finally back with their long awaited sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is everything we'd ever hoped it would be - it's pop music at it's most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least. After having released three albums in just over two years time, very few expected they'd have to wait over four years for a new Club 8 album. Some even started to assume the band had split up. In May 2007 the band returned with the amazing Tropicalia-influenced "Whatever you want" which rapidly became a huge blog hit - top 10 most blogged songs according to music blog aggregator Elbo.ws The waiting's been so long we can almost, but just almost, talk about a comeback album. However, waiting's not always a bad thing. Not only has songwriter Johan Angergård released three albums with The Legends and one with Acid House Kings in the time in between - Club 8 has evolved in to one of the most personal and emotional bands around today. Not that previous albums have lacked emotional depth, that's far from the truth, but "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is truly different and a very very special album. The fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death arrives in the shape of twelve perfect pop songs in a summer dress. It's mix of sunshine and melancholia is just as unique as it's profoundly moving.

Cult, The
Born Into This
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "So in 2007, an age when pure hard rock was nothing to be ashamed of, the Cult roared back with the back-to-basics record Born into This... From the beginning of the first track, it's clear that Born into This is going to rock as hard as Electric or 1989's Sonic Temple. The Cult have obviously quit the experimentalism and art rock asides of the '90s and 2000s, in favor of something that fits in well with both Astbury's time fronting the Doors and Duffy's unapologetic metal side project, Circus Diablo. Aside from the occasional flourish of their post-punk gothic past, most of the record is the dirtiest and heaviest hard rock they've recorded since the '80s..."

Dead Or Alive
Sophisticated Boom Boom
PS, UK "Sophisticated Boom Boom" was the debut album from UK synth pop/new wave act Dead Or Alive, released in 1984. Fronted by the imposing figure of Pete Burns, latterly a fixture on UK television -not least through his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother - it gave the band its first UK Top 40 single, with a re-make of KC & The Sunshine Band's 'That's The Way I Like It'. That single, as well as 'Misty Circles', were also hits on the US Hot Dance and Club Play charts - when the latter was reissued as the b-side to 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)'. 'Misty Circles' and further single 'What I Want' were cowritten by later Sisters Of Mercy and Mission guitarist Wayne Hussey, but it was Burns' confrontational press image that generated column inches. Dead Or Alive were embraced by the New Romantics as well as clubbers, and Burns engaged in a series of entertaining press spats with Boy George about who minted that image of extravagant gay frontman, outrageous dresser first. This re-release, on CD for the first time in the UK, includes a slew of bonus tracks as well as detailed liners notes about the band's history.

Demons
Evocation
PS, US Consisting of Nate Young (of Wolf Eyes) and Steve Kenney, Demons explore near-epileptic fits of droning analog synth textures that elicit comfortable remembrances of electronic-obsessed forefathers like Stockhausen and Cluster whilst simultaneously bludgeoning forward with the grating and scraping atonal complexities of Whitehouse and Throbbing Gristle. Having already rallied a feverous flux of supporters with intense psychedelic multi-media performances and a slew of cryptic releases, among them this year's fetishistic Life Destroyer box set, Evocation is an appropriately elaborate and accomplished approximation of their shrewd identity. Evocation is Demons first official CD, with artwork contributed by the duo's frequent visual collaborator Alivia Zivich.

Five O'Clock Heroes
Bend to the Breaks
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "It seems like the early 21st century is loaded with alt rock acts that sound like new wave acts circa the late '70s/early '80s. But probably in most cases, it's a haphazard coincidence, as the groups in question were merely influenced by third generation new wavers - who have no bloody idea who the heck Joe Jackson is. But then there is Five O'Clock Heroes, who specialize in a style known as 'jerk pop' (due to their fondness for slashing "Roxanne"-esque guitar lines), and draws from a musical vocabulary that is unmistakably straight from Look Sharp! and This Year's Model on their 2007 debut, 'Bend to the Breaks'... Sticky sweet power pop (which is entirely keyboard-less) never goes out of style -- especially when it's loaded with hooks -- and Five O'Clock Heroes sure can craft a instantly memorable pop gem, as 'Bend to the Breaks' is loaded with 'em." Glaxo Babies
The Porlock Factor
PS, UK Glaxo Babies were born out of the thriving Bristol punk scene in 1977. They enjoyed indie chart success with the 12" EP 'This Is Your Life' in 1979 and notoriety when its follow up 'Christine Keeler' was banned by Radio One. John Peel, who offered them sessions and gigs with his legendary road show, championed the Glaxo Babies. Sadly though, the band was always too recalcitrant, headstrong and idealistic for their own good and imploded acrimoniously after barely 18 months together. With a sense of unfinished business, the nucleus of the original band (Rob Chapman - vocals, Dan Catsis - guitar, Charlie Llewellin - drums) reformed in 1985. Here are the results, inventive and melodic psychedelic pop and warped funk that somehow sounds fresher now than it did in the 1980's.

Hot Gossip
Geisha Boys and Temple Girls
PS, UK Having previously scored a UK hit in 1978 with 'I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper', dance troupe Hot Gossip took the brave move of recruiting British Electric Foundation's Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh - recent ex-members of Sheffield electronic synth-pop pioneers Human League - to produce their debut album "Geisha Boys & Temple Girls" in 1981. Ditching most of the material that had already been recorded with producer Richard Burgess, Marsh and Ware decided to utilize material they had co-written for The Human League (Morale, The Word Before Last and Circus Of Death from their debut album Reproduction); their latest project Heaven 17 (Soul Warfare and Geisha Boys & Temple Girls); a song from an offshoot of The Human League called The Men, who had released one single on Virgin (I Don't Depend On You) - and a couple of other cover versions which included a song from the seminal Brian Eno produced Talking Heads album Remain In Light (Houses In Motion) to create this electronic curiosity which is reissued for the first time on Repressed. There's even a cover of Cocteau Twins' "Heaven Or Las Vegas" with pedal steel taking the place of Liz Frazer's vocals. Japancakes do not record together like other bands. They do play together but when they record in the studio they do so one at a time. Each player writes their own part and adds it to the part(s) recorded previously by fellow band members. The result of this practice is that the personality of each individual player is often better captured. Each player's individual performance is strengthened by it. Japancakes is Eric Berg, rhythm guitar, Nick Belli, bass, Brant Rackey, drums, John Neff, pedal steel, Heather McIntosh, cello, Andy Barker, production. RIYL: Dreamy, lazy, stellar, Post Rock, Shoegaze, Electronica, Americana, Tortoise, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Hammock, Santo & Johnny. IN MUSIC WE TRUST: "A roots-inspired, beautifully crafted pop instrumental record that extracts feelings and emotions better than that of most "intimate" singer-songwriters."

Jones, Sharon & The Dap Kings
100 Days, 100 Nights
PS, US Soulful new album! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The album is much smoother, even gentler, than her previous releases, and though the Dap-Kings still power their way through the ten songs with bright horn licks, inspired drumming, and staccato guitar lines, there's a deeper, bluesier edge to the record, heard in "Let Them Knock" or the slower "Humble Me." "Don't let me forget who I am," Jones croons in the latter, her voice rising to a sweet falsetto at the end of the phrase. It's a very clean record, not over-produced but well produced, with a lot of great pop moments tucked in between the brassier, funkier bits. The title track relies on a sultry organ and a minor vamp to make its point, while "Something's Changed" uses strings and punctuated sax and bass as the singer drops a bit of her lungs out, bringing a kind of immediacy to her words, as if the actuality of the situation around her hasn't quite set in enough for her to wail about it, as if she's just realizing it and listeners are right there to hear about it. But that's the magic and power of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings: their ability to convey passion and pain, regret and celebration, found in the arrangements and the tail ends of notes, in the rhythms and phrasing, and it is exactly that which makes 100 Days, 100 Nights such an excellent release."

Jonesy
Masquerade: The Dawn Years Anthology
PS, UK Recently cited by "CLASSIC ROCK" magazine as "The Best Prog Band You've Never Heard", Jonesy were one of the most innovative British bands of the early 1970's. Placing a Mellotron at the center of their sound and taking influences from the worlds of jazz, rock, classical music and folk, Jonesy recorded a single and three albums ("No Alternative", "Keeping Up" & "Growing") for Pye's progressive Dawn imprint. Drawing comparisons to KING CRIMSON and YES, Jonesy were more that. Classic Rock's Malcolm Dome declared recently; "Jonesy were more than mere mimics of any Fripp-ery. They made some fascinating records". Now, for the first time, ESOTERIC gathers all of Jonesy's recorded output for Dawn Records and gathers it on this deluxe 2CD set, with all tracks remastered from the original master tapes. "Masquerade" is certain to attract an excellent response.

Kiefer, C & Pitcher, J
To All Dead Sailors
PS, US A collection of songs, instrumentals & sonic experiments, this is an album that explores the mystery of the sea: its violence, its beauty, its grace. Christian Kiefer & Jefferson Pitcher collaborated, trading harmonies & instruments on various tracks, and working through various songwriting ideas as they floated to the surface.Acoustic & electric instruments are combined with field recordings to create a finished project that is reminiscent of Brian Eno's ambient projects, the moody soundscapes of Sigur Ros, and the song-based work of Califone, XIu Xiu & Damien Rice.

Lerche, Sondra
Dan In Real Life OST
PS, US Soundtrack to the film of the same name, with special guests Regina Spektor, Faces Down Quartet, and Fine Frenzy. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The album is made up of a couple of songs from previous albums (a jazzy take on Elvis Costello's Human Hands from 2006's Duper Sessions, Modern Nature, his lovely duet with Lillian Samdal from 2002's Faces Down, and the peppy Airport Taxi Reception, one of the highlights from 2007's Phantom Punch) plus newly recorded songs. It being a soundtrack there are several short instrumental pieces, most featuring Lerche on acoustic guitar with subtle backing from pedal steel, trumpet or piano. They're all very pretty and surely sound nice when sprinkled through the film, but what makes this soundtrack very good are the actual songs Lerche composed for the film. Best of the lot is the lilting and sweet as punch To Be Surprised but the others are nearly as good, especially Hell No, a witty duet between Lerche and a very snappy Regina Spektor. Along with short instrumentals, another thing you're sure to find on a soundtrack are stunt covers, easily recognizable songs rendered with a heavy dose of ironic hipness as an easy way to get audiences hooked without seeming like you're pandering to them. Here Lerche adds syrupy strings to Pete Townshend's Let My Love Open the Door and escapes pretty harmlessly but A Fine Frenzy's stilted take on Fever makes one wish that Congress would pass a bill banning future covers of the song. At the end, (if you leave off the covers) the soundtrack presents a clear picture of Lerche's talent and the high quality of his songs and performances."

Mams, The
Wam Bam!
PS, UK One of my mates described Welsh outfit The Mams' debut as "Style Council gone disco" (and meant it in the best possible way), but there's a hell of a lot more than just Paul Weller and Chic sutured between the hand claps, string stabs, grooves and, um, swine rock guitar. In fact, although The Mams claim to be fans of the whole of pop music from the 1950s to the present, this reviewer finds it difficult to spot any obvious influences and comes away more impressed by the self-deprecating wit and lyrical charm that pulls the entire amalgam of pop's uncool past together. Not to mention pulling together a line-up, which purportedly includes former members of Tan Tro Nesa (1980s Welsh TV's answer to The Monkees), Idha and The Hepburns, as well as a High Llamas fellow traveler. Reviews to date frequently cite Scissor Sisters and 0898-era Beautiful South; I prefer to imagine Junior Senior, but with actual lyrics. In a perfect world The Mams would take the first prize tinsel ribbon for soundtrack to this summer.

Move, The
Shazam [remastered]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The single most accomplished album to be recorded by any of the Birmingham rock bands (which include the Moody Blues), Shazam is sort of Sgt. Pepper's with an attitude, a mixture of expansive progressive rock worthy of the Beatles and high-energy music honed by years of playing loud on-stage. The rendition of Tom Paxton's "The Last Thing on My Mind" pushes these guys simultaneously into Byrds and Jimi Hendrix territory, while "Beautiful Daughter" is one of the most unabashedly pretty records of this era, and "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited" is defiantly strange."

Mum
Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy
PS, US New album! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The hazy, strange innocence of the band's previous work sounded like Múm was somehow able to commit the fever dreams of sickly children to tape; here, Múm's music is still sparkling and childlike, but it's also much brighter and livelier. "Blessed Brambles"' sprightly, ping-ponging beats and chanted boy-girl vocals make it clear that this is a different Múm right from the start, and the band spends the rest of Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy moving away from their old sound. Sometimes, they take baby steps: "Marmalade Fires"' gently rolling melody and distorted beats are quintessentially Múm, but the song is more structured and immediate than most of the band's other work. "These Eyes Are Berries" could be from some lost, twisted children's album; its brass, glockenspiel, and singalong "la la la"s are undeniably cheery, but the sudden, ominous twists the song takes give the impression of dancing too close to the darkest part of an enchanted forest. Other times, Múm takes steps so big, they really should be called leaps."

Pipettes, The
We Are the Pipettes
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Just when you thought they didn't make 'em like that anymore, Brighton's Pipettes emerge with this debut album to prove you wrong. With hooks and looks borrowed from the golden era of Phil Spector, the Pipettes, it seems, are on an admirable mission to re-establish the concept of the girl group... With their strictly classicist approach, the Pipettes have managed to bring the girl group concept into a new millennium. Inevitably, though, they have brought something of their own time period and personal outlook to the formula... We Are the Pipettes is both witty and filled with ear-catching melodies. Recommended listening for any lover of classic, celebratory pop."

Springfields, The
On An Island Of Dreams
PS, UK Dusty's springboard to success was undoubtedly The Springfields. It was the act that got Dusty on TV, got into the charts with productions by her future studio stalwarts Johnny Franz and Ivor Raymonde and, most importantly, got her to the States where she would eventually base much of her later career. Looking back, the trio appear as a welcome breath of fresh spring air in an early 1960s confused by an autumnal mix of coffee bar rock'n'roll and cocktail bar easy listening. In short, The Springfields were that unique moment in time before Dusty finally decided her roots were no longer in silver threads and golden needles but in the blonde peroxide bottle of sixties pop. Their Folk Pop crossover scored many successes and the 12 singles, 5 EPs, 2 LPs , 1 Soundtrack (2 tracks) released on The Springfields by Philips in the UK are all included here...

PS, US Produced by FOUR TET with artwork by EYE. The relationship between Four Tet & SHOTM began in August 2003 when Kieran Hebden, read the cover story of The Wire, which touted SHOTM as leaders of the "New Weird America". That story sent Hebden on a search for Sunburned records & he's been a fan ever since. In 2004, Hebden asked Sunburned to tour with them. A couple of years later in March 2006, Hebden asked the band if they would like him to record them with the idea that he would take the recordings & construct his vision of a Sunburned record. DAZED & CONFUSED REVIEW: "Fans of experimental wig-outs, random noise, echo chambers and bongo breakdowns will get a buzz out of SHOTM`s new offering. PS, US Symphonic and scowling, steeped in contempt and white-hot hate, this record is the crumbling tombstone resting atop black metal's misshapen head, the last will and testament for the affliction that keeps on afflicting. Leave blasphemy, Satanism, and false agony to all those other humanist hacks; Xasthur is the noose at the end of your rope. "It's so unnerving at times that it's easy to forget that this is just one Californian, one human like any other...except he hates everything he sees with a Nietzschean passion" - Decibel.

Xeltrei
Litotes
PS, JAPAN Xeltrei is David of Library Tapes and girlfriend Erica on Piano. Xeltrei hails from Sweden and consists of Erica on piano and David (of Library Tapes) on piano, field recordings, and computer. Their short album is made up of ten tracks of delicate, muffled piano melodies mixed with an array of crumbling sounds. Xeltrei explains their collaboration as "lo-fi piano music made with love." Indeed, each song is quite simple, but extremely heartfelt. The music sounds almost like a forgotten, homemade cassette where each melancholy note on the piano is allowed to resonate before it fades.

Yellow Swans
At All Ends
PS, US AMG: "On their second album for Load, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson again make a lot of righteously gloomy noise soundscapes for the masses -- they wouldn't have it any other way, of course. Swanson fully embraces space-rock dramatics filtered through the vast soundscapes created by the likes of Flying Saucer Attack, sheets of feedback howl and moan turning into something utterly transcendent...."

A Taste Of Ra
Morning of My Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN This is the third and final album in the A Taste of Ra trilogy. Nicolai Dunger, and the cloak of mystery behind the Taste of Ra project has captivated many with its various incarnations of free-folk meanderings, Tim Buckley jazz-howl and Swedish pastoral indie-hum. Dunger describes Morning of My Life as follows: "When we moved to the tent and the light was golden and we were young, and the magazine was all there was to bring, and you woke in the night when the birds were singing just for you and the smell of soil and the warm breath over through you, ohh it moved you. All there was to it, was the morning of my life." He also describes that the overall idea behind the first two A Taste of Ra records was for pure vocal and instrumental experimentation -- using recording techniques on a more personal level. On this final record in the trilogy, he takes a different approach, starting off with one song that he developed together with Swedish musician, songwriter and producer, Jari Haapalainen. The song naturally broke up into six movements, creating a film-like, dramatic pattern, and Johan Berthling made some beautiful arrangements for three of the movements. Starsailor-esque vocals, jazzy horns and loose, clattering drums mix with piano, harp and guitar arpeggios -- just as much of an Impressionistic song cycle as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.

All Sides
Dedalus (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 16TH)
PS, UK Following two EPs on Make Mine Music and Chat Blanc Records, and a collaborative album with Troum on Old Europa Café, "Dedalus" is the first full-length album from Nina Kernicke aka All Sides. Drawing influence from the likes of Slowdive, Radiohead, Scorn, Meat Beat Manifesto and Mark Hollis, to name but a few. Nina's music has been greeted with praise from many quarters, including Boomkat who noted that the music of All Sides successfully merged many styles into a "euphoric" blend. "Dedalus" is partly an expression and reflection of Nina's personal experiences, but it was also inspired by recording the album "Shutun" and touring Poland, Finland, Canada and USA with Troum, an experimental, drone outfit based in Nina's hometown of Bremen, Germany. The album's title is, in part, a reference to the character Stephen Dedalus in the James Joyce's classic novel Ulysses. The title track gives a clearer indication about the context, in its use of a sample from a cinematic version of the novel, in which Dedalus walks along a beach, looking out to sea, becoming aware of his loneliness. Simultaneously, the title refers to the character from Greek mythology whose son Icarus dies during their escape from Crete - Dedalus and Icarus build wings out of feathers and wax and, in spite of warnings, Icarus flies too high and too close to the sun, melting the wax and plunging him into the sea. References to both of these can be found throughout the album, but they are as much metaphors for Nina's personal experiences as they are literary references. The CD comes housed in luxurious cardboard and felt packaging, limited to 500 copies.

Horrible Oracle Blessedness (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Attacknine Records is proud to present Am-boy's "Horrible Oracle Blessedness", 16 tracks of addictive Technicolor synth-tunes, and the latest dose from a body of work that has earned him the title of "Walt Disney on Acid". Am-boy is coastal NJ's Forrest Wolf, and 'Horrible Oracle Blessedness' is his third full-length release. Perhaps more so than ever before, 'Horrible Oracle Blessedness' is filled with his trademark sugary hooks and pristine production that will leave you with a smile on your face and a head full of melodies you won't stop humming. The beats and melodies are deceptively simple, exemplifying a complex series of emotions that perfectly unveil themselves with each listen. You will not be disappointed, as this is by far one of the best albums of 2005." - Erik Kowalski/CASINO VERSUS JAPAN

Ana D
Satélite 99 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 16TH)
PS, SPAIN In October it will be ten years since we released one of the most unique records that have ever been done in Spain and, we dare say, elsewhere. Ana D has become since then a legendary name to whisper to each other's ears, and we want to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her only official album as it deserves: with a full re-release that rises to its condition of lost classic album, joining an extra bonus album that enhances even more the new release. Today, "Satélite 99" sounds as fascinatingly weird and beautiful as it did the first day. As if a more sophisticated Martin Rev collaborated with a tattooed, black-haired Nancy Sinatra, or with a mysteriously distant Astrud Gilberto, on this album Ana D and her companions, producers and arrangers (Ibon Errazkin and Javier Corcobado) used vintage instruments and forgotten beat boxes to create their own kind of "acoustic synth-pop", with references that ranged from Kur Weill and Serge Gainsbourg to SUICIDE themselves.

Arp
In Light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, NORWAY Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of Tussle & The Alps. As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music" (bridging the natural and electronic worlds), nearly all of In Light was recorded live. Very few loops were used - in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re: natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music" today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music.

Askew, Ed
Little Eyes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Recorded in one continuous take in NYC, 1970. Made with little more than magnetic tape, Ed's voice, and the stunningly modern arrangements of his beloved Martin Tiple, "Little Eyes" is as grand, sad, and beautiful a statement as can be expressed. His off-key lilt hangs like a seductive pink mist, and settles deeply; you'll hear these songs long after they're over. Attempting to publicize an unreleased record, Ed did a string of radio gigs between NY and New Haven, and the best of them are collected here. Lovely and wild.

Bevel
Phoenician Terrane (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Phoenician Terrane, BEVEL's first release for Contraphonic, is a record of densely orchestrated American wonder. This is the Great American Songbook as discovered by the descendants of Harry Partch and Charles Ives upon a rock in the sand. As a whole, Phoenician Terrane evolves over a cinematic arc, leading the listener across pages of a sonic story, a historical journey parlayed through a personal lens. Languidly plucked guitar lines pave trails amongst violin and flute embellishments, transient Gypsy-laden tones swash about warm synthesizers, with everything cast in a soft, psychedelic haze. Further buttressed by Nuon's haunted vocal delivery, the songs create a tapestry of tales related in the realm of the surreal. Assembled with a cast of contributors featuring members of Califone, Boxhead Ensemble, and Manishevitz, among others, Phoenician Terrane is BEVEL's finest work to date.

Brother Kite, The
Moonlit Race (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6th)
PS, US Over a year in the making, The Brother Kites Moonlit Race EP has undergone several conceptual changes as time has moved on. The final product is one to cherish. Originally conceived as a single for Get On, Me - arguably the catchiest song on their masterful sophomore album Waiting For The Time To Be Right the EP stays true to form by leading off with that track. From there on, the listener is treated to five exclusive tracks. We are treated to alternate versions and mixes of two album tracks from WFTTTBR, including the title cut and Hopeless and Unsung. A never-before-released live version of Never in Years from a WERS 88.9 radio session in Boston is also included. Sandwiched in the middle of the disc are two solid non-album tracks. Unearthed/Digging in the Dirt is taken from DJ Potters creepy child-zombie short film Of All That Is Unearthed. The track Half Century appears here in hard-copy format for the first time. The track was originally recorded for the most recent Adult Swim download compilation entitled Warm and Scratchy, and saw the band sitting comfortably alongside an impressive array of indie notables such as The Rapture, TV On The Radio, The Raveonettes, Fennesz, Broken Social Scene, The Liars, Asobi Seksu, Amusement Parks on Fire, Les Savy Fav and more. In addition to the six audio tracks, the CD has enhanced content featuring three videos! The alternate version of Hopeless and Unsung gets paired with an artistically shot video. I'm Not The Only One has been a fan-favorite over the past year, having been downloaded off the band's website and YouTube more than 5,000 times. The video is beautifully and professionally shot, and appears here on an official format for the first time. The disc is wrapped up with a funny, behind-the-scenes, home-shot video by the band about the recording of the penultimate album track Get On, Me.

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Yes, the albums are better places to hear all of these tracks, and there's a typically Cannish disregard for chronology or narrative (i.e., don't hope for liner notes), but this double-disc set is an excellent introduction to the band's 25-year career."
