Audiofly X
4 Play
PS, GERMANY Upcoming UK duo Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito aka Audiofly X make their debut on Get Physical with a three-tracker that sounds fresh and entertaining. Lead track "4 Play" does what its title suggests, teasing the listener and moving in a number of different directions. Just when you think that you've got used to the cold, skeletal drums, Audiofly X seduce with haunting chords, and by the time that the reconstituted trance riff drops, the listener will be ready to explode with passion. "Are We There Yet?" is a real hands in the air, smiley-faced moment, combining old-school rave samples with ultra modern metallic drum sounds, powerful bass pulses and austere chords.

Badawi
Final Warning
PS, US Sub Dub's percussionist Raz Mesinai manifests here in his Bedouin guise, deplying 5 tracks showcasing his cultural heritage through a New York filter. "F. W." has a persuasively swaying main drum loop, topped w/ stretched ullulations & sirens which lend a hallucinatory character to the cross-pollinated groove, while "Do We Belong" shows that bagpipes are not a purely Celtic invention. Badawi mixes pipes, chants & depth-charge dub bass expansion on "Bedouin Raid," which is as energetic as the title indicates, while Simmie Sernaker's haunting violin drones & scrapes combine w/ the low-end rumble & swirling drum rhythms of "Yashar" to provide the EP's highlight, a glorious combination of ancient and modern trance techniques. The dark edge which haunts this EP separates the mood from the usual ethnological forgeries & pastiches of the more festival-friendly blends of Eastern and Western music; it's upbeat, but defiantly so. "Anthrax Sandwich - Today's Special" is a case in point - the circling drums & pipes build a vortex of increasingly edgy intensity, accentuated by an eardrum rush & a gradual fade into denied release. An EP which presages great things to come, & could well open a few ears to Moroccan & other North African music.

Bootleg Remedy, The
Cutting Time
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The second release from New York City's greatest old-timey music revivalists, the Bootleg Remedy continue to wade through the source waters of American music... Providing fun on par with that of the Squirrel Nut Zippers or R. Crumb & the Cheap Suit Serenaders, Gould has an undeniably refined talent for breathing new life into songs written long before he was born and creating new compositions that sound similarly ancient... Overall, a mixing pot of country, jazz, blues, and Western swing that boils over gloriously for 45 minutes." /// THE VILLAGE VOICE: "Covering an eclectic range, from tuba and fiddle to saw, with especially fine lap steel and clarinet. Their sound has been compared to Bill Monroe and Louis Armstrong, but closer in their gutty resolve, I think, are once-removed cousins of the masters, like the Band and the Mekons... Toe-tapping fun that brings Disneyland parades to NYC watering holes." /// TIME OUT NEW YORK: "The CDs feel so homey that you keep waiting for the telltale crackles and pops associated with the old 78s." /// NEW YORK PRESS: "Some of the best bluegrass revivalists in America today."

Bootleg Remedy, The
S-T
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "By exposing the ragtime roots of both Dixieland jazz and bluegrass, the Bootleg Remedy find the crossroads where Louis Armstrong and Bill Monroe meet. A rambunctiously fun outing similar to the string band recordings of R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders, banjoist/mandolinist/vocalist David Gould leads his band through seven barn burners that sound as if they should be playing in the background of some grainy 1930s children's cartoon. With good-natured banjo, guitar, and tuba laying the foundation for some hot trombone and violin, "Davo's Rag" and "Snake Juice" take familiar-sounding blues progressions and send them off on improvisational side roads with decidedly happy feet. Not content to simply plug into the standard renditions, "Old Salty Dog Blues" is treated to a clattering jug band makeover, just as "Blue Moon of Kentucky" is remade as a nearly unrecognizable dirge until breaking into a shuffling Dixieland street procession. Overall, a set of songs that fly by in just under 25 minutes but establish the Bootleg Remedy as one of the greatest Dixieland/old-timey revivalists of the early 21st century."

Bun Hunga and His Combo
Relax
PS, SPAIN "Limited repress of this little known gem by Dutch Hammond king Roland Thyssen under his Bun Hunga pseudonym which has already been tipped as one of the best exploited albums of the continent. Bun Hunga and his Diplomatic Music (as it appeared in early 7"s and some issues of the album) recorded this killer exploitation album which, unlike many of its counterparts, is a solid killer from start to finish (not a single dumb filler in sight!). Originally released in Belgium, and licensed to Spain and Argentina, some of the tracks were later repackaged in a couple of albums (Trumpet Prayer and Music in Transit) by the mysterious Golden Music Orchestra. Thyssen's organ dominates the album all over, an 11-track selection covering a wide array of moods, grooves and tempos: from the classic Euro sounds of 'Happy Starting' and 'Privilege For Organ' to the the exotic influenced grooves of 'Play For Suzy' and the incredible 'Bangala' via the mysterious jazz of 'Quiet Ballad' or the relaxed 'Cabal In The Night.' A mixture of go-go Latin rhythms, funky arrangements, masterful studio trickery, exotic atmospheres, top band action and screaming fuzz parts. Think The Underground Set, La Formule Du Baron, Jungle Obsession, Mandingo and other groovers of the era... this is European exploitation as its best."

Burial
Burial
PS, UK This first album on Kode9's Hyperdub label comes from the mysterious Burial. On this stunning self-titled CD debut, Burial carves out a sound which sends the dormant slinky syncopations of UK garage, via radio interference, into a padded cell of cushioned, muffled bass, passing through the best of Pole's Berlin crackle dub. . Utterly seductive.

Buttrich, Martin
Cloudy Bay
PS, GERMANY Martin Buttrich is a Germany-based producer and ingenious mastermind behind the Time Tools studio and co-producer for high profile artists like Timo Maas or Loco Dice. Cloudy Bay is his debut EP for Poker Flat. The first track is catchy and simply beautiful, with exciting strings and a wicked break. Massive tune! The B-side holds two more high-spirited tracks with "What's Your Name" being a bit more relaxed and deep, while "Lazy Bastard" edges upwards again to a good pace with a great arrangement and a 100% positive vibe.

Canterbury Music Festival, The
Rain & Shine
PS, UK 2003 release. "If you are looking for ultra-rare soft pop, you've come to the right place! Only 150 copies were pressed (in order to establish copyright) of The Canterbury Music Festival's 1968 album, Rain & Shine, an almost willfully secret psych-pop masterpiece of sorts on the obscure and collectable BT Puppy label out of New York City, owned by the legendary Tokens, and the source of many rarities from The Canterbury Music Festival to the Brute Force classic 'The King Of Fuh' (licensed to Apple Records in the UK, becoming their rarest single when immediately banned by the BBC). In addition to the many hits associated with the Tokens, baroque and breezy psych-pop a lá Left Banke, Association and Blades Of Grass is the order of the day here, with songs by The Tokens and the enigmatic Steven 'Brute Force' Friedland, this is a great addition to the Revola roster of scarily collectable artists in this genre."

Mixing click-beats with glitch-melodies and sounds, but they sound very unlike most other laptop musicians. Frost, Thomas and Richard
Visualize
PS, UK 2002 release. "Of all the known or rumored 'lost' albums from the odd pop era when everyone wanted a go at a super-pop classic a la Brian Wilson, this is perhaps the most thoroughly lost...as the only essay in this style by the artist, it was a case of never before and never again! Richard and Tom Martin were mainstays of The Art Collection aka Powder, America's closest shot at the pop-art sound of The Who or The Creation. After a number of classic (and now ruinously expensive) singles failed to set the charts alight, a change of direction was clearly called for. Calling themselves Thomas and Richard Frost, the brothers signed to Imperial Records and made a number of classic pop singles, some of which indeed hit the lower reaches of the charts, all in preparation for their masterwork, Visualize unfortunately, reorganization at Imperial after their acquisition by Liberty Records meant the album was cancelled: at such a late stage that production masters complete with catalog number and half-completed artwork have languished in the vaults until now. Tom and Rich's next project was an accomplished country-rock album for UNI Records, the breathtaking pop experiment of Visualize remaining a closed chapter...until now."

Fumi, Satoshi
Peak
PS, GERMANY Satoshi Fumi is one of the most exciting house producers from Japan. During the mid-1990s, he grew interested in the Detroit, Chicago and New York house movements, and absorbed the different sounds of electronic music throughout that period, helping him to shape, develop and influence his own unique style. Satoshi's production skills have matured enough today, allowing him the freedom to create, and as a DJ, to mix a variety of dance music styles together such as techno, house, click and acid. For Satoshi, the opportunity of his lifetime as a producer arrived in 2002 when DC duo Deep Dish picked up his track "Protlex" and released it on their Yoshitoshi Recordings.

Gaiser
Neural Block
PS, CANADA Gaiser ups the ante with his second Minus EP. Following on his And Answer EP, Jon Gaiser cements his growing reputation with another finely-crafted selection of tunes, demonstrating a deep understanding of the intimate mechanics required for minimalist sound sculpture. "Neural Block" employs a subtle use of reverse snares, scuttling percussive bleeps and subliminal samples, while "Half Life," with its séance-like voices and liquid grooves, swells to the maximum. Then there's the nocturnal landscape of "Seepage," complete with sliding delays that slowly space out before giving way to moody synth-pulses and a rocking metallic snare solo.

Hilary Harris is one of the few really interesting film makers in the country... keen and penetrating visual perception... a search for the understanding of the complex world about us... a rare combination of qualities necessary to making great films." -Leo Hurwitz, former head of the NYU Graduate School of the Arts. Hayleck, Andy
Two Gong/Wire Pieces
PS, US "Baltimore-based sound artist Andy Hayleck has worked primarily with field recordings and bowed metal over the past seven years in improvised settings, installation and solo composed works. His previous recordings include The Disappearing Floor (Recorded), a suite of edited field recordings and vibrating metal sounds; Various Recordings Involving Ice (Fairfield/HereSee), a set of field recordings of crystallized H2O; and his bowed saw and cymbal performances with fricative free music collaborative group Trockeneis (Ehse). Two Gong/Wire Pieces presents side-long live-to-tape performances using a special system which Hayleck has invented and with which he has performed widely - bowing a long wire attached to a Chinese gong, allowing for special control of the irrational vibrations of the metal plate through careful control over the tension of the wire and place and style of bowing. The resulting masses of beating tone-forms are lakes and pools of eddies or whirlpools born from a deceptively simple and carefully considered system and a seemingly enormous pair of ears."

Howlin' Magic
Howlin' Magic
PS, US "With no discernible connection to any current micro-scene or music-making community, Howlin' Magic, aka California free-blues guitarist Jesse Rakusin, works in relative isolation, laying down impossibly heavy blues licks, amp noise, and expressionistic drum tracks at a breathless clip. In early 2006, Rakusin began circulating a self-titled CD-R of twelve private, four-track recordings. Those fortunate to hear it were fairly astonished. This was the sort of record that might have emanated from Siltbreeze or PSF in the early '90s, a devastating set of home-recorded, white-hot splatter-blues, at once formally way-out and ultra-primitive in its execution; and its chief 'architect' was this kid from Santa Cruz whose influences included Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Simply Saucer, White Heaven, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Holy smoke! Rakusin's command of the blues, combined with his seemingly insatiable appetite for psychedelics, has yielded one of the most scorching records to issue from the U.S. underground in years. There's nothing ponderous or 'searching' here - the hippie affectations and inchoate mysticism that infect our current cultural environment are all but absent from Rakusin's purview. Instead, what we've got here is a successful marriage of raw garage-psych and highly advanced freeform noise."

Javerling, Rickard
The Three Sisters EP
PS, UK Swedish travelling minstrel Rickard Jäverling presents further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. With banjo, drums and guitar, "Three Sisters" (which also featured on his Two Times Five Lullaby) distills a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence blended with traditional folk. "Västbacken" is a hazy instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining moment is the 7-minute epic "Sultan," which takes the Chicago post-rock formula and re-contextualizes it for 2006, giving us something both reflective and quietly jubilant. Yesternow artists Shoreline finish off with a remix that injects the original track with a sense of fun and playful abandon.

Last of The Real Hardmen
10,000 Miles
PS, UK . "Chris Summerlin's debut album under the boastful, ironic pseudonym Last of the Real Hardmen follows six years of releasing lathe-cut vinyl and hand-crafted CD-Rs that received tiny circulation to no more than a small circle of fans. The quality of the tunes on offer suggest this is a third or fourth album rather than an excitable first. Summerlin is a virtuoso guitarist and lays down electric guitar patterns with drums, field recordings and the occasional bottleneck to provide depth and variation. Instrumental music can be hard to keep interesting and this is where Summerlin's skill really kicks in, injecting his form of purist instrumental music with nods towards inevitably John Fahey merged with the full-bodied widescreen emissions of Tortoise. The lovely folks at Birdwar have also included 6 tracks from Summerlin's ultra-limited lathe cut 10" originally released on Lone Hand recordings and this faultlessly adds to the mass of an almost worryingly beautiful album. Despite costing 30p to make on a cassette 4-track, this is otherworldly and timeless music."

Li Allin
All In
PS, US Li Alin has worked w/ many other media art forms before landing in the music world. From her experiences in building mobile sculptural robotics to crafting virtual sperm banks for the internet she brings very unusual perspectives to her fascination w/ reproduction, science fiction & soundtrack . "All In" is an audio diary of "pop noir" love songs that chronicles an exploration of a deeper, more intimate side to her engaging sphere of contradictory personalities. Stylistic
references may touch upon hints of Marlene Dietrich, Nico or aspects of Serge Gainsbourg, but the listeners for Li Alin are apt to find themselves in a fresher, fragile universe navigated by the obsessive nature of this spare & rigorous euphoric voice.

Echochamber
PS, GERMANY Copenhagen-based Martinez aka Martin Swanstein returns with a great new single on Audiomatique. The title-track is an amazing deep space track built up on a heavily dark bass and some extraterrestrial sound-gimmicks that make this an extraordinary trippy groove monster. "Woodenbox" on the B-side is as far out as the A-side, but a bit less dark. A cool sliding groove spreads a deep but slightly progressive feel. Two excellent tunes from Captain Martinez' spaceship - now boarding.

Mecki Mark Men
Marathon
PS, Sweden "This is the 3rd album by Mecki Mark Men. Recorded in the CHESS studio in Chicago while Mecki Mark Men was on a North American tour in 1970. Basically it is the same heavy acid space rock as on their previous Running in the Summer Night album. Mecki Mark Men was (together with Hansson and Karlsson) Jimi Hendrix's favourite Swedish band. When Jimi came back from his Swedish tours he probably told the tales about the wild Swedish Hammond organ tormentor Mecki Bodemark, who did the same things with his grinding organ as Jimi did with his guitar. For those of you who yet have not heard MMM I can tell that they sound like a mix of Teargas, High Tide and Jimi Hendrix but with a wild organ player and the mighty Kenny Hakansson on lead guitar, with lots of fuzz and wah-wah, and sitar! After this album Mecki quit and the band changed their name to Kebnekajse. This CD includes their Sonet album from 1970 plus a commercial jingle. Reissue on CD taken from the original masters."

Mops, The
Psychedelic Sounds In Japan
PS, US "The Mops are one of Japan's best known 'Group Sound' (GS) bands, particularly noted for their psychedelic period. The group was founded in 1966 by high school friends Mikiharu Suzuki (drums), Taro Miyuki (guitar), Masaru Hoshi (lead guitar) and Kaoru Murakami (bass), playing mostly instrumental rock like that of the fabulously popular Ventures. The Mops album Psychedelic Sounds in Japan, released in April of 1968, was full of flower power flourishes, including cosmic artwork, ethnic clothing, fuzz guitars and sitar playing. It included covers of the Airplane's hits 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit,' The Doors' 'Light My Fire,' Eric Burdon's 'San Franciscan Nights' and The Animals' 'Inside Looking Out,' as well as the super Mops theme song 'I Am Just A Mops' (which later became a cult favorite after being included on the obscurities album Nuggets 2). Despite being widely considered a psychedelic band, the Mops' original songs were more garage band sounding. They also had a dark side that was very much not a hippie vibe. While most bands were playing love songs, The Mops album had a song called 'Blind Bird' about a terrible dark world, which contained the lyrics 'please kill me,' This led to the song being left off some reissues (but it is included on this one.)

Namlook, Pete& Burnah Ocal
Sultan
PS, GERMANY 2004 release. "Pete Namlook collaborated with the incredible Turkish musician Burhan Öçal whose roots lie in the classical music of his country. Besides all traditional percussion instruments he also plays stringed instruments like Ud, Tanbur and Saz. Sometimes he sings with his expressive voice on top or recites medieval Turkish poetry. With his 'Istanbul Oriental Ensemble' he won the 'Deutschen Schallplattenpreis'. In collaboration with Pete Namlook a new and very special combination of beat-oriented deep ambient, electronic beats and the powerful music of the Ottoman empire developed and formed a new style and spirit back in 1996."

Peacock, Annette
X-Dreams
PS, ITALY "A little known pioneer, Annette Peacock's innovative style of vocals and composition has earned her critical acclaim around the world. After cutting her teeth as a member of the jazz avant garde (touring with Albert Ayler and collaborating heavily with Paul Bley) she made further history for her pioneering work with the Moog synthesizer (she was the first to use it live and to use it to electronically modify vocals). Her critically acclaimed X-Dreams, released in 1978 after her move to the UK, is an emotionally and sexually charged voyage through minimalist 'free form' musical environments. An oneiric journey through experimental jazz rock, featuring such luminaries as Chris Spedding, Mick Ronson, and Bill Bruford, to name a few."

Peacock, Annette
The Perfect Release
PS, ITALY "1979's Perfect Release, continued in the vein of the previous year's X-Dreams. Diatribes on sexual and social politics compliment her pioneering style of jazz rock/funk fusion, further cementing Peacock's role as an individualist and musical pioneer. Individuality is the land mark of Peacock's biography and it seems almost unfair that they should belong to one person; as if her life has been gluttonous for the incidents and acts of legend. "

Pig & Dan
After Ibiza/Touch
PS, GERMANY Pig & Dan are one of the big newcomers on Cocoon Recordings. With After Ibiza/Touch, they deliver a real beamer for Cocoon, totally right on in giving consideration to the Ibiza reference. For ten minutes, echo bleeps and trippy beats are screwed into your brain in a way that sometimes reminds of Ricardo Villalobos. The B-side "Touch" comes along in a more tech-house style, with minimal structures and overlapping harmonies, which make the perfect soundtrack for every sundown.

PS, ITALY "Room's 1970 Pre-flight is a near-masterpiece of blues-influenced prog-rock with forays into jazz territories. Well-structured and punctuated by interesting time changes and a skillful use of wind and string instruments, they are definitely at least on par with labelmates Leaf Hound and Mellow Candle. The guitar playing of Chris Williams and the remarkable vocal timbre of the singer also places the album a cut above many in the genre."

Schnerider, Guido
Transmission
PS, GERMANY After his groundbreaking debut album Focus On, Guido Schneider returns with a new stunning EP on Poker Flat. Transmission is even more proof of Guido's great production skills, presenting two excellent tracks which explore his signature sound even further. The title track "Transmission" is a pure rhythmic and percussive affair, showcasing a vast array of drums from kongas to bongos, and sticks to shakers to build a hypnotizing, highly energetic soundscape. A buzzing chant by Florian Schirmacher adds a sacral atmosphere to the track. "Halo" manoeuvers through mainly percussive terrain, but contains more impulsive and funky elements. Check the well-timed cue of the deep bassline - this is ace and gives this track an extra claim to fame.

Starving Weirdos
Father Guru
PS, US "In 1998, Starving Weirdos began crafting a body of staggeringly beautiful, unsettling freeform soundscapes, unbeknownst to all but a tiny circle of friends and neighbors in their native Humboldt County, California. The duo's recorded works had not surfaced until very recently, in the form of extremely limited CD-Rs on such labels as Jyrk and Root Strata and on the group's own imprint. They have, without exception, met with resounding critical praise and intense curiosity from the experimental music community. At the core of Starving Weirdos is the duo of Brian Pyle and Merrick McKinlay. The pair weave intricate tapestries of sound from strands of electroacoustic improvisation, ambient noise, free-folk, and musique concréte. The density of these works is matched only by their clarity of purpose and execution - each piece brings into existence a distinct sound-world, rendered with a pointillistic attention to sonic detail that belies the duo's economy of means. The result is a profoundly disorienting music that thrives on the tension between artificiality and organicity, stillness and constant mutation. Starving Weirdos' music sits uneasily beside that of their contemporaries in the free-drone/noise/improv underground. While the group undoubtedly has something in common with such outfits as Sunburned Hand of the Man or Double Leopards (the two groups with whom they are most often compared), SW's expansive, understated approach to improvisation and recording more closely resembles an amalgam of early AMM, Taj Mahal Travellers, Basil Kirchin, and Pauline Oliveros' deep listening experiments - as filtered through the crisp night air of California's redwood forest."

Swift, Mark
Ave Mavis
PS, CANADA Yorkshire England based Mark Swift is one of three new artists to be discovered by Mr. Aaron Funk a.k.a Venetian Snares for Sublight along with newcomer Gareth Clarke and Wisp. Mark's "Ave Mavis" album is 11 tracks of cascading rhythms against a genuinely beatific pulse of soundscapes, recalling IDM at its brightest, Mark's music is pleasantly nostalgic with an added originality we think will suprise you. Mark describes his sound as "not dissimilar to what "The Last Of The Summer Wine" theme tune might have sounded like if Cleggy and Foggy had habitually pushed Compo down the hill on a rusty Ensoniq SQ1 8-track Workstation rather than on a disused settee". It's okay we don't know either, you will just have to listen for yourself.

Who Will Buy These Wonderful Evils
PS, SWEDEN The Swedes are taking over and are hitting the music scene all over the world. But this is not really a new story. In Sweden, as many other countries, the appearance of the Beatles in 1964 brought a reaction against the stagnant music scene of the past. Literally thousands of pop groups appeared from nowhere and the music scene changed forever. Sweden soon became one of the greatest pop hotbeds of the world and this compilation is the solid proof. On these two sizzling discs the cream of the 21st century's Swedish pop/rock/psych wonders are matched with the unquestionable pioneers of the Swedish 60s. Disc one offers a initiated peek at what's happening in the Swedish rock, pop and psych scene right now. Known and unknown material from current heroes such as the Soundtrack of Our Lives, Hakan Hellström (selling platinum in Sweden), Nicolai Dunger, Jose Gonzales, Broder Daniel, Silverbullit (aka Citizen Bird), International Noise Conspiracy, Sagor & Swing, and Caesars Palace to hungry up-and-coming debutantes like Dungen, the Whyte Seeds and Franke, amongst others. Rub 'n' Tug present Campfire
PS, BELGIUM Originally released in 2005. Campfire is New York party mavericks Rub 'N' Tug's decent into a raucous night out in Dante's disco inferno. DJs Thomas and Eric Duncan compile everything from Cozy Powell to Daniel Wang, in the true spirit of New York's after hours loft parties, rolled up with distortion, shouting, rock, funk and sweat. Based on a weekly NYC party called "campFIRE," this mix gives you a brief glimpse of the madness that is Rub 'N' Tug when the pair get behind the decks. From the piano-led house break of Bumblebee Unlimited's "Lady Bug" to the cinematic beauty of Double Fantasy's "Heartbreaker" and the strutting disco of Flash and the Pan and Hot Chocolate, Rub 'N' Tug know how to have a party and they're at a disco near you. Volcano The Bear
The Birth of Streissand
PS, UK "Second release from the new Newcastle-based No-Fidelity label, after the first recording from scene-legend Sir Richard Bishop (of the Sun City Girls) sold out in a whistle. Something a bit special. Having built their career upon a reputation for incendiary live appearances and a heap of self-released CD-Rs and cassettes, Leicester's Volcano The Bear have slowly been gathering steam, becoming one of this country's most exciting experimental improv outfits. This startling new 7" for No-Fi showcases the group at their most abstract, the A-side a sinister brew of creaking violin and string plucks. It sounds something like No-Neck Blues Band collaborating with Wolf Eyes on a re-take of the Saragossa Manuscript soundtrack. The B-side goes further down the path paved by Olsen and co. with some metallic clanking and utterly gnarled noise eruptions."

Alps, The

PS, JAPAN The ALPS are Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (aka Tarentel), Alexis Georgopoulos and Scott Hewicker, a loose-knit collective of atists/musicians/writers very active in San Francisco's vital underground scene. The group specialize in spontaneous compositions of the out-limits variety, offering a SOUND that is ancient and new, intimate and enormous, ecstatic and expansive, and illuminated with white light. And JEWELT GALAXIES/SPIRIT SHAMBLES is their 1st full album collecting the first two CDR releases from The ALPS. Following a specially tuned internal compass that leads them from open meadows and rushing rivers to urban chaos and decay, The Alps use a variety of sound sources (Wooden Flute, Tabla, Orchestra Bells, Electric Guitar, Omnichord, Microphone, Clarinet, Violin Bow, Acoustic Guitar, Organ, Shakers, Mixer, Voice, Cassette Tape, Sleigh Bells. This was recorded with one microphone in Scott Hewickers's living room mostly in one session on November 14, 2005 and a bit in August earlier in the year. Of their debut JEWELT GALAXIES, the good people at AQUARIUS RECORDS had this to say : "Glistening meditative soundscapes well-suited to gazing at frosty mountain peaks such as those of their namesake. Squeaky clarinets and alien flute melted into whirls of swish and whoosh, all laid over drones and instrument hum and tape hiss. Quite beautiful." The group are currently working on a follow-up record with engineer/producer Philip Manley (The Fucking Champs, Trans Am, Oneida). In the coming months, the group will release a 12" on visual artist Chris Johanson's new imprint Awesome Vistas. The group will also contribute a song to Devendra Banhart's forthcoming tribute compilation devoted to the works of the Clive Palmer. (Text by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma / The Alps).

Alsace Lorraine
Dark One (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 5TH ) (ON SALE)
PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator. Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark", was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St. Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully, Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together. Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun during college on the south side of Chicago and completed it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings four of the best songs on the album, but she also made important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music. We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.

Antonio Carlos Jobim And Luiz Floriano Bonfa
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, UK Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim is the biggest name in Brazilian music. His composition 'The Girl from Ipanema' with 'Yesterday' are the most popular song of all time and it is THE number that defines Bossa Nova (though Jobim wrote two dozen other songs that are intrinsic to the genre). Jobim and the virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa were (with Joao Gilberto) the architects of Bossa Nova; overseeing the transition of traditional samba song to the new form and our collection covers those years of transition. Our set includes Jobim songs played by Bonfa and vice versa. It includes vintage domestic hits written either by Jobim or by both men and as a major feature also includes the entire score of the 1956 'Orpheus of the Carnival' stage play (written by Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Morais). This was the blueprint for the famous film 'Black Orpheus' which two years later swept all before it at the Cannes Film festival and put Bossa Nova on the world map. Our set captures the flavour of fifties Brazil, when in arts and culture and sport the country was really emerging. Jobim and Bonfa are popular throughout the world. Much of the later work of both men has long attained classic status and is in print (eg Jobim's number 1 USA LP with Frank Sinatra). Both men are major names in America and Japan. Bossa Nova has been given further impetus with the re-discovery of Tropicalia and period Brazilian music is now extremely prominent, in Britain and Europe especially. Any student of Brazilian music will appreciate this album.

Aphrodisiacs, The
In the Name of the Father (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, JAPAN Scottish experimental trio have been around since 2002 when they reportedly sounded like Mogwai with a Casio keyboard thrown in for good measure...Since then, the band released the mini album "This Is A Campaign," the title track of which landed in John Peel's 2002 festive fifty and which landed the band a Peel Session to boot. "In the Name of the Father" is The Aphrodisiacs' first full-length album and features 6 remastered tracks from the minialbum
plus 6 brand new tracks recorded in 2006. "The Scottish trio use soothing vocals to lure you into their dark and eerie electro rock world where tense guitars suddenly explode over insistent clipped beats, and it's all frighteningly catchy and incredibly good. New Order, Depeche Mode and The Cure references abound on the more upbeat tracks, the slower efforts warmly reminiscent of Death Cab For Cutie, making This is a Campaign a sparse and utterly beguiling slice of disco music for the quietly deranged." Arc Lab
No Spectre (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH )
PS, US Arc Lab's sophomore release "No Spectre" finds the n5MD imprint returning to its roots. Medard Fischer (a.k.a Arc Lab) uses almost 99.9% the digital realm to create his sonic tapestries. Those familiar with Fischer's music will hear unparalleled growth in his production and songwriting since 2005's "the nineteen floors" (MMBP). Those unfamiliar will take comfort in his musical expressions. "No Spectre" features cascading rhythms reminiscent of some of Telefon Tel Aviv's beat-work, the melodious cadence of early Arovane and some of the warm yet slightly sinister elements of label-mate Proem. It highlights a delicate balance of tension and emotion, harnessing errant melodies, fractured percussion and granular synthesis experiments to make that all-important musical connection with the listener. Human moments made by machines? A human heart succumbing to the synthetic? Or maybe just an artist utilizing some old spectres to make something all his own... tracklisting: I`m All Vectors, Versions, Natch, So Much For No Surprises, The Several Song Dead Days, Miss Wet T-Shirt Vancouver 2006, Plays Tim Arndt, Spectres, The Past!, All Parallels.

AT SWIM TWO BIRDS shocks with the very stillness of the music: undulating guitar lines with a hint of the sound of pubs and fairgrounds, moodchanging music full of deep beauty. And although there is a certain similarity to the sound created by The Durutti Column and Tindersticks, for AT SWIM TWO BIRDS it is the lyrics which play the key role. Quigley spends time in the twilight world of corner pubs and cafes, with those who are lonely or depressed, those who love each other but are lost. His words touch the heart because they are about those trifles that make sense of our lives, that are common to everyone. AT SWIM TWO BIRDS' music encapsulates the strange pleasure that comes from contemplating a drama, understanding it and sharing it. Perhaps if David Lynch had filmed "The Straight Story" in England, he would have chosen the music of AT SWIM TWO BIRDS' as his soundtrack. "Quigley lies under the snow, as if he feels there is a silky warmth before the last goodbye ..." Les Inrockuptibles. "We knew that from the immese talent of Quigley we could only expect yet another masterpiece, another cleasing of the soul, but before such beauty, one cannot stop wondering: do we really deserve it?" (Rockdelux, June 2003). "With his pride in the working class and the common people he offers these delicious bucolic nuances for those who are still able to stop, contemplate and listen ..." (Mondosonoro, July-August 2003).

Bardot, Brigitte
And God Created Woman (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, UK 'And God Created Woman' is the soundtrack to the notorious 1956 film that made Brigitte Bardot the sex symbol of her generation and propelled her to International stardom. It was condemned by the Church and created scandal everywhere. Bardot's then husband and film director Roger Vadim - 'Barbarella', was quick to capitalise. It made a fortune and changed the face of cinema. Jane Fonda called it "the first cinematic blow for women's liberation" and as a landmark in French cinematic culture is considered the film that ushered in the 'New Wave'. The jazzy/mambo score by Paul Misraki ('Alphaville') creates the appropriate steamy atmosphere and in the first half of the programme Brigitte Bardot reads selections from the script in French.

Bark Haze, The
Unititled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 13TH)
PS, US This limited edition lp was pressed in an edition of 500 with letterpressed covers done by Manifesto. These are completely different recordings than the Bark Haze compact disc also on Important Records. The Bark Haze is primarily a guitar duo of GOWN (nom de plume of one Andrew Macgregor) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth etfuckingcetera). Auxiliary members have been know to include Pete Nolan (Magik Markers, Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Cops et al). Their name came from a mis-hearing of the radical early 70s R+B group the Bar-Kays and from that moment the concept of mis-hearing and allegiance to presenting the mis-hearing as some open-ended musical course became The Bark Haze's identity. So far all concerts have taken place in Western Massachusetts and once in the confines of Cambridge, MA's Twisted Village record emporium. They anxiously await their debut gig in the UK at the Nightmare Before Christmas event curated by Moore. As the heroic and potentially bonkers Carpenters refrained We've Only Just Begun. Damn straight.

Cantu-Ledesma, Jefre
The Garden of Forking Paths (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 9TH)
PS, JAPAN Jefre-Cantu Ledesma is a San Francisco based artist and musician. He is a founding member of Tarentel and since 1995 has recorded and toured in the US, Europe & Japan with the group. In 2000 after a much needed break from the band schedule he began making solo music under the name Colophon. In 2003 Love Loops was released on the Temporary Residence label as part of their mail order only Travels In Constance series. In 2004 he started the Root Strata label and has released recordings from a wide variety of musicians such as Yellow Swans, Grouper & My Cat is An Alien. The Garden Of Forking Paths is the first full length solo CD by San Francisco based musician Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Eschewing the laptop processing of his earlier work as Colophon, the album was created with an assortment of tape recording mediums (Cassette, Micro-Cassette, Reel to Reel tape machine) and a small arsenal of guitar stop boxes used on wide variety of instruments from electric guitar to bowed gong. In addition to recording at his home studio, various sites found in the near by Marin Headlands just north of San Francisco were used for live outdoor site specific recording. With its title taken from a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, the album is overtly concerned with dreams, memory, death, birth, infinity and the possibility of a labyrinth like approach to music making, where songs are not written as much as they slowly emerge out of the process of music making.

PS, US Domestic release for The Chrysler's second album, with 5 bonus tracks. 'Cold War Classic' is the second full-length release from mysterious Swedish folk-pop band The Chrysler, recorded in a little cabin outside Katrineholm, Sweden; an album filled with hope, agony, and clarinets. The band's debut album 'Failures And Sparks' was well-received by music writers, who have compared The Chrysler's enigmatic, bonfire folk and baroque, jangling pop to The Byrds, Neil Young, Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake, The Band, Belle & Sebastian, The Velvet Underground, Lambchop, and Norway's Kings Of Convenience. Guest appearances by Laakso vocalist Martin Krunnegard and Swedish songstress Britta Person. As with their debut album 'Failures And Sparks', released in late-2005 by Galaxy Gramophone/PLG, the U.S. edition of 'Cold War Classic' will be augmented with five bonus tracks, the songs from their Blue Gold and First Blood EPs, including their cover of Bob Dylan's "Changing of the Guards".

In 2002, their second album, "Walking With Thee" earned them a Grammy nomination. Described by NME as "a stunning return to form", this release sees the band work again with Gareth Jones (Interpol, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode). Clouds
Legendary Demo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH)
PS, US Boston's Clouds deliver unbridled action-rock harking back to the mid/late '90s Man's Ruin garage onslaught - which, in turn, owes its collective hearing loss to the likes of the Wipers, Bad Brains, Stooges, and MC5. But there's more. From nasty psych and southern power grooves to "Party Grunge" and sax'd-out dub, this record has it all. Though the band proudly wears their influences on their sleeves, they stand apart because the melting pot sounds unique. They lock and stock their way through manic tracks that meld ZZ Top, the Stooges, Bad Brains, Karp, and Sun Ra.

Cohen, Danny
Shades Of Dorian Gray (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH)
PS, US Cohen has been mentioned in the same breath as everyone from Tom Waits, Vic Chesnut, and Jad Fair to Daniel Johnston and the Residents. Danny, a one-time cohort of Captain Beefheart, has stepped up the arrangements on his latest release. Mellotrons, horns, organs, and lap steel adorn these sixteen songs full of riotous images and indelible hooks, sounding positively Wilson-esque. "Shades" is the musical equivalent of an accomplished painting. Equally cerebral and serendipitous, Cohen's third album on Anti is an eclectic song cycle that thrives, informs, and rewards with each successive listen.

Diagram Brothers
Some Marvels of Modern Science + Singles (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 20TH )
PS, UK 24 tracks. Digitally remastered from the original studio tapes, Some Marvels of Modern Science + Singles features 24 tracks and runs for 74 minutes. In addition to all 14 tracks from their 1981 album on the New Hormones label (founded by Buzzcocks), the CD also features ten bonus tracks from all four singles released between 1980 and 1982, including the cult favourites Bricks and Discordo, as well as the ultra-rare Diagram Brothers German EP. Often compared to XTC, Gang of Four and Fire Engines in their day, The Diagram Brothers invented and defined their sound 'discordo' as follows: "The music was made to a strict formula, or set of rules. All the guitar chords were based on discordant notes, all the beats were very simple rock or disco, and all the words very straightforward and down to earth." Some Marvels Of Modern Science drew warm reviews on release in 1981: "The Diagram Brothers play an extraordinary, quirky, jerky brand of speedo funk, as if some Pavlovian behaviourist has got hold of The Gang of Four and started to do tricky experiments on them... Science before sentience, the didactic before the ecstatic seems to be the unusual anti-rock n' roll idea... This is an album of observations which are never dull, and of music which - in spite of being clinical - is never cold. I quite warm to this kind of off-beat fun and to the proof that the English eccentric spirit needn't necessarily take twee grown-up public schoolboy forms." (NME). The CD booklet features a deluxe 16 pages booklet featuring facsimile artwork and detailed liner notes.

Earlies, The
Enemy Chorus (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, US This sophomore effort is a hypnotic voyage through a largely aphotic locale w/ unpredictable bursts of light & sound, perhaps amidst the heavens, or maybe under our own feet. The album comes from a darker & less familiar place than their pop tradition-steeped debut. While no less beautiful than that record, this carries a greater feeling of uncertainty, longing, anxiety, & sadness. Influences range from the essential work of Faust, to prog greats Gentle Giant, to the musique concrète madness of Jean-Claude Vannier.

They've been a fixture of late night MTV2 rotation, and recently created the soundtrack for a Nike World Cup commercial. The US version of this album contains a bonus disc with four additional tracks and two videos. Far Corner
Endangered (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 16TH)
PS, US Far Corner was formed in the Spring of 2003. This quartet of keyboards, cello, bass, and drums blends contemporary classical chamber music with One can hear influences from Stravinsky and Bartok and other contemporary classical giants, as well as from some of the great progressive rock bands of the 1970s. On their second album, Far Corner combine and contrast group improvisation with completely scored works, composed in a contemporary, post- Bartokian style. Since their debut album in the fall of 2004, the band has kept up a steady performance schedule, with some highlights being performing at Progday in North Carolina in 2005 and opening up for Ozric Tentacles in summer, 2006. All four members of the group are well seasoned pros in either classical/ contemporary classical or rock/progressive rock or both. "Keyboards, cello, bass and drums cooperate for instrumental 'chamber rock' - a synthesis of a heavier progressive style with acoustic elements like cello...with the cello often following a perfectly-intoned tenth above, resulting in a slithery, silky undertow for the band.... Mind-blowing.... fun to listen to."-Keyboard

Gilberto, Astrud
September 17, 1969 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, UK Is there any need for an introduction to Astrud Gilberto, The Girl From Ipanema, who brought the nonchalant 'Vaga' vocal style of the Brasilian New Wave to international attention and launched a thousand indie-girl records and fantasies in a time and place she never imagined....?? Rev-Ola proudly presents the second in our series of Astrud Gilberto's wonderful albums....described as her best album by none other than popmeister Duglas T. Stewart of The BMX Bandits...well, it IS simply amazing. A move into softpop rendered in her trademark sexy style but with the surprising addition of some pretty funky playing. As her tenure at famed jazz label Verve was running down, her versions of songs by The Beatles, Bee Gees, Margo Guryan and The Doors gave a new slant to her amazing talents... simply lovely! - One of the BEST albums ever made anywhere in the world ever anywhere... erm, anytime!

Hotel Alexis, The
Goliath, I'm On Your Side (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, US The second album by Hotel Alexis, shows the band poised to make an impact in the landscape of American song. "Goliath" marks a significant step forward for the Hotel Alexis, and especially for singer/songwriter Sidney Alexis. Taking the Americana and folk influences from the first album, "Goliath" expands the distinctive songs into more experimental and psych influenced territory. Written primarily by Alexis during a stay at an ex-hippy commune in southern Spain and recorded in locations all over the US, the albu's tracks are reminiscent of Sparklehorse trading songs on the porch of Richard Buckner while a Velvet Underground era Lou Reed looks on with an approving nod! Nice!!

Isabelle Antena
Carpe Diem + Extras (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 16TH)
PS, UK 22 tracks. Isabelle Antena, is an acclaimed easy and electro-samba pioneer from Paris. Originally released on Les Disques du Crepuscule in November 1992 (in Japan and France only), Carpe Diem was recorded with musicians including Marco De Meersman (drums) and Fritz Sundermann (guitar) at Studio Caraibes in Brussels. Isabelle produced the album herself, which has rightly come to be regarded as a milestone. The vibe is chiefly cool jazz, latin and bossa, and complements perfectly Isabelle s warm voice and soft, sensual lyrics, never more so than on Corto Prend le Large and E Preciso Perdoar. Carpe Diem represents Isabelle s personal affirmation of life and music, following the tragic death of her husband and musical partner Dirk Schoufs (previously with Vaya Con Dios). The song Corto Prend le Large stands as a particularly heartfelt tribute to Dirk. The extended 66 minute CD also includes all 10 extra tracks from Isabelle s previous album, Les Derniers Guerriers Romantiques, released in April 1991, and recorded by Isabelle with Dirk Schoufs and a crack team of crack jazz and bossa musicians. Artist biography: chic trio Antena formed in Paris in 1981. After scoring cult hits with wry single The Boy From Ipanema and classic mini album Camino Del Sol in 1982, the band left Crepuscule for major label releases on Island and Mercury. Going solo, Isabelle Antena returned to Crepuscule in 1986, and since then has released a further twelve albums, her writing spanning jazz, funk and latin, and achieving notable success in Japan and the Far East. The most recent Isabelle Antena album, Easy Does It, appeared in 2005. The new Antena album, Toujours du Soleil, was released in April 2006.

Jobim, Antonio Carlos & Luiz Floriano Bonfa

Lilja, Tobias
Time is on My Side (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH )
PS, US "Time Is on My Side" is Swedish experimental composer Tobias Lilja's second full-length album and first on n5MD. This follow up to his sonic debut "Ex-leper" (nonresponse) has all the controlled visions of decay as its predecessor but with the addition of Tobias' desperate yet controlled vocals. These vocals bring to the fore-front a humanistic layer of melody to the tonal blizzard of Tobias' music yielding new dimensions which are to most, unclassifiable. Said by the artist to be somewhat loosely inspired by some of David Sylvian's recent work, this comparison though is almost a moot point due to Tobias' originality in his instrumental composition and his vocal delivery, melody and cadence. "Time Is on My Side" is truly in a world of its own. A teetering balance of contradictions... Frigid yet in some way invitingly warm, desperate with a false sense of hope, other-worldly yet somehow familiar, this balance is where Tobias Lilja excels and is proof of an artist who has found "his" sound. "Time Is on My Side" is one of those rare works of art that comes along to help you through those dark times when everything seems hopeless...

As such, he's released four albums on CD-R in the last few years and has managed to sell several thousand of them pretty much on his own. His music has been described as soulful indie folk with a powerful mini orchestra. Layer upon layer, adding instrumentation and vocals, these songs seem to bloom like time-lapse photography, depicting glimpsed scenes of modern disaffection and timeless yearning. "Loney, Noir" is at once effervescent and resigned, exhilarating and melancholy, joyous and confessional.

PS, US This is the debut from Australian rapper Romy Hoffman, a Melbourne-based artist who began her music career in the mid '90s as a 15-year old guitarist for Ben Lee's first band, Noise Addict. There's something for everyone on this album. Braggadocio battle raps sit right next to tunes about kites and balloons, while banging party songs are followed by the eerily spooky. This is a woman of many musical loves; hip-hop may have never sounded so fresh. L'Autre Cap (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, US Composing his music to be played by amateur musicians, Tori Kudo, the enigmatic conductor of Maher Shalal Hash Baz, has been called "The Master Of Mistake". On this release, he's a wickedly inspired bandleader, presenting a tight package of 27 songs both fierce and fragile. Barely held together by the threads, these songs seem just a note away from falling apart completely. The effect is at turns serene, dissonant, enchanting, rockin', and intensively catchy. For longtime fans who've tracked the group over their many years and mutations, this record is an essential follow-up to "Faux Depart", and is also an excellent starting point for those unfamiliar with the long history and naïve genius of Tori Kudo's Maher Shalal Hash Baz.

Morricone, Ennio
Morricone In the Brain (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, UK This album will take you take you on a profoundly psychedelic trip through one of the most fertile imaginations in 20th century music. It is a mind-bending seventy minutes with the maestro - Ennio Morricone. Ennio Morricone was the biggest living man in film music, and this album is when he was in the beat pop acid sixties and seventies at the height of his creative powers when his abilities as a composer went far beyond even what the best international groups in each genre were capable of. The majority of the music featured on this incredible compilation is from obscure European art movies and (long deleted) is being released in digital format for the first time. Morricone In the Brain is a testament to Morricone's incredible artistry and also his versatility. My Cat Is An Alien
Leave Me In The Black No-Thing (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, US Leave Me In The Black No-Thing is the new full-length album recorded April 10th, 2006, at MCIAA's Alien Zone, located in a remote region of the Western Alps, Piemonte, Italy. The work consists of two tracks entitled Part One and Part Two for a total length of 56:15 minutes. After having been irradiated by the Cosmic Light Of A New Millennium, you find yourself facing a black and white cover, where the only view of the universe is foreshortened, and represents a lighted shape showing branches of pine trees under a white sky, within the darkest black. Element which represents the esthetic detaching and, at the same time, a further step in the duo's artistic process, which determines their willingness to go beyond any goal already achieved. For MCIAA to make art means to risk daring the unknown, daring the listener himself to excel his own limits of perception of the work of art in music, without losing anything of their unique and unmistakable style. If, as many of the international critics have been remarking, MCIAA's works live on the boundary between Light and Darkness, it's also true that Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium celebrated the light of the outer spaces as well as Leave Me In The Black No-Thing represents a jump into the No-Thing of the empty inner spaces. Recorded in their secret recording-space up on the Western Alps of Piedmont, Italy, during the trespassing from dusk to the beginning of the night, the work lives of the same dark magic of the Wagnerian post-romantic overtures, suspended between the deepest silence and the most deflagrating sonic attack. Light/Darkness, noise/silence, permeated by Roberto Opalio's suffering vocal tunes, which defines and underlines the edge of the work. After the cacophonic and free implosion of the nucleus of the initials 30 minutes, 25 minutes of painful silence follow, sounding like the last whisper before the final end: angels' chorus and ectoplasmatic presences float on Maurizio Opalio's crystal-clear guitar strings. It's the Cosmic Blues of the III Millennium, which penetrates into the soul, leaving indelible signs.

The extra-terrestrial nature of his work claims its ontological status in the act of creating a non-finished, otherwordly dimension - a proper alien dimension. In the last few years Roberto Opalio has performed his videos and specific audiovisual installations in various arts & music spaces and festival in Italy and Europe, including the Sage Gateshead Newcastle and CCA Center of Contemporary Arts Glasgow in UK, Victoria Hall Geneve and Fri-son Freiburg in Switzerland, Galeria Ze' dos Bois Lisbon in Portugal, Torino BIG Biannual of Young Artists 2000, Interzona Verona, Init and Spazio S.Ambrogio Roma, Zo' Catania in Italy; group exhibition at Promotrice Delle Belle Arti Torino, as well as many other audio visual performances including Teatro Juvarra, Procope, Liber, Machè, Fuoriluogo and Villa Capriglio among others in his hometown Torino. Slightly Sorry (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 20TH)
PS, US In addition to the Anglo-Irish quasi-folk influences, you get some Garth Hudson attempts, some Roger McGuinn-izations, the odd Crazy Horse-ism & a pretty nifty cover of a song by Youngbloods pal Jeffrey Cain. After all influences have been calculated, the roots-informed, detail-obsessed, defiantly handspun sound & the transcendantly glossy results of such alchemy, make the truth about P.G. Six. Feat. Accidental Gentleman (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, US Eschewing modern technology for the familiar sound of analog tape, Piebald's newest collection reflects the band's characteristic duality of being gentlemen at heart, but a bit sloppy by nature. Proswell
Bruxist Frog (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 9TH)
PS, US Chicago's Joe Misra aka Proswell took just enough time out of his busy schedule studying IDM clichés to compile a fourth long player for Merck, just before they close their doors. "Bruxist Frog" is Proswell's fourth album to date, and will be one of the final two CDs released on Merck. With material from the last few years that has been finely tuned and polished this fall, it has worked itself out to over 60 minutes of music. Uniquely nostalgic, it rises up to overtly dense 8-bit pop, and down into off-world colony lounge music. It continues the timeline and progression of his work into more sophisticated production methods and complex sounds and beats. Proswell's previous material includes his critically acclaimed albums Konami and Carrot Dossier, as well as a special selection of live tracks melded together for the Merck Mix Series (4). Fans of melodic electronic music are assured satisfaction. Ltd 1000.

Seems like this time he wanted to make the kind of music you might hear on walking into your favorite bar, rather than drifting from the speakers of, say, your local charnel house. Satie, Erik
Dada Works & Entr actes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 16TH)
PS, UK CD collection of Dada-related works by French avant-garde composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) including scores for Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Kurt Schwitters and Rene Clair. An enthusiastic Dada activist in Paris between 1920 and 1924, Erik Satie collaborated extensively with Tzara, Man Ray, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, wrote often in Picabia s journal 391, and was a sworn enemy of the Surrealist faction lead by Andre Breton. According to Man Ray, Satie was the only composer who had eyes. All of Satie s principle Dada-related works are included on this unique CD: Trois morceaux en forme de poire, performed by Satie in July 1923 at Tzara s notorious Soirée du Coeur a barbe, at which fighting broke out between Tzara s supporters and the proto-Surrealist faction. Ragtime Dada, an extract from the ballet Parade performed at a series of Dada soirees by Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg in 1922. Entr acte and Cinéma, both scores for Francis Picabia s dazzling multi-media instantaneist ballet Relâche performed in 1924. Cinéma was Satie s custom score for the celebrated intermission film by René Clair, while for their curtain call Satie and Picabia drove onstage in a tiny car, resplendent in jewels and furs, the whole production amounting to an act of anti-art provocation. Both are Satie s arrangements for solo piano. The 70 minute CD (40 tracks) is performed on piano by Bojan Gorisek, while the booklet features archive images and detailed historical notes by James Hayward.

Shannon, Sarah
City Morning Song (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH)
PS, US Lead singer of 90's indie-rock darlings Velocity Girl releases her second solo album, further marking her departure from the guitar-driven noise pop of her former band. Although this record provides love songs in spades reminiscent of Burt Bacharach and Carole King, Shannon doesn't shy away from exploring darker subject matter. Groovy, laid-back beats, warm piano, sweeping strings, and stately horns give these songs a timeless classic pop feel, with the central feature of Sarah's solo work, her voice, showing strong as ever. "Stark and sultry. Shannon's voice, strong and limpid is utterly at ease with a pre-Elvis mode of delivery" - The Washington Post. "Breezy, sunny pop sounds" - NPR, Morning Edition.

Shins
Wincing The Night Away (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 23RD)
PS, US Their third album is the sound of a band growing up and out. James Mercer's infectious, indelible melodic style is still at the core, but on various songs he also channels a Morrissey vibe, pairs a hip-hop beat with lush melodic lines and searing guitars, toys with tweaked-out piano steeped in psychedelic strings, utilizes fractured synth samples, adds gauzy, arpeggiated keyboards that cloak thunderous anthems, and even takes cues from early Jesus And Mary Chain sweeping, fuzz-toned epics. The album also contains the lilting, exhilarating, rollicking, rock-solid pop songs we've all come to covet from The Shins.

PS, US Like the soundtrack to a heartbreaking film that never existed, these songs are simultaneously beautiful & completely unpredictable. Let's be honest though, instead of mapping out each track for you, you're probably best off putting the disc in your CD player & hearing it for yourself. Because like all great music, there's an element that can't be conveyed via adjective or analogy. "Our music should be enjoyed, it shouldn't be intellectualized," Allen summarizes. "It can be, I guess, but it should be enjoyed first. Music should just be enjoyed."

subtractiveLAD
No Man's Land (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH )
PS, US When Canadian electronic musician Stephen Hummel's debut as Subtractive-LAD "Giving Up The Ghost" materialized in 2005 n5MD touted it as an amalgam of the label's emotional experiments in music credo. With his second album "Suture" (2006) subtractiveLAD toughened things up a bit by getting darker and somewhat emotionally weighted. With his new 3rd full-length for n5MD entitled "No Man's Land" subtractiveLAD has out shined his previous albums by creating an introspective and focused actualization of his emotions. In past outings subtractiveLAD has only hinted at such introspection and has let us see just a hint of such depth of psyche. This new more open aesthetic has seemingly given Hummel a newer confidence in his sound that has led him to push further its boundaries by adding elements such as guitar, field recordings, and even hints of vocal texture to his signature style of self-made synth melodies and compressed beats. Songs of defiance, love, exasperation, hope, loss and even pleasure are all compiled in such a way to lead you through a journey of great musical rewards. SubtractiveLAD has yet again captured a resounding annotation of n5MD as a label and as a stylistic categorization, proof that there can be a beating heart behind all the silicone and wires. tracklisting: The Shell, Life in a Day, Of Sand and Stars, Synthetism, Bring to Light All Ways, Meditation 17, The Sun in Your Eyes, No Man`s land, The Lucky Ones. Similar artists: Chris Clark, Xela, Bitcrush, Proem.

Sykes, Jesse and the Sweet Hereafter
Like, Love, Lust & The Open Halls Of The Soul (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 6TH)
PS, US A sprawling album, deep with musical and lyrical texture. There's a timeless quality to this record; its rocking guitar solos and driving rhythms could easily be a lost gem cut by Crazy Horse between takes with Neil, but it retains the fragile beauty of much of Sykes' earlier work as well. From lilting to waltzing sway to hallucinatory psychedelia, this record finds Sykes and her band exploring new sounds with a confident ease. Guest appearances from Nicolai Dunger, jazz keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, and avant garde violinist/composer Eyvind Kang.

From Brussels With Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 13TH)
PS, UK 19 tracks. LTM is proud to announce the very first CD release of the classic 1980 compilation album From Brussels With Love, also the debut release from chic Belgian indie label Les Disques du Crepuscule (TWI 007). Originally released as a deluxe cassette/book package in November 1980, From Brussels With Love featured 22 exclusive tracks from the international avant garde and new wave, as well as the celebrated Factory Records roster. Then, as now, the contributing artists include Gavin Bryars, Harold Budd, Dome, The Durutti Column, John Foxx, Martin Hannett, Richard Jobson, Bill Nelson, New Order and Michael Nyman. The programme also includes extended interviews with Brian Eno and iconic French actress Jeanne Moreau. Writing in NME in 1980, journalist Paul Morley praised From Brussels With Love thus: "This is a reminder - without really trying, without being obvious - that pop is modern poetry, is the sharpest, shiniest collection of experiences, is always something new." And according to Dave McCullough in Sounds: "This tape, a long mysterious piece of collective modern overdrive, points to a future somewhere." This new CD edition has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes, and features 75 minutes of material. Most of the tracks remain featured here unavailable elsewhere.

Villalobos, Gina
Miles Away (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 3RD, 2007)
PS, US Gina's nothing if not dead serious. Her music is deeply rooted in time, place, and history. She's the real thing: an artist, someone who can show you where you are. Hailed as the new "Queen of Country Rock" and seemingly out of nowhere. Gina has rapidly established a growing cult following in the UK and the US for her infectious, raw, simply irresistible, roots rock influenced songs. Knowing when to whisper and when to unleash, she finesses words into new meaning with the slightest inflection. And for her live performances, where her willingness to expose herself completely takes her audience's out of the moment, to a place up above the chaos, alone with their thoughts. Eventually nothing else exists...it is a truly transcendent experience. Though she's been knocking around the music business since the mid 90's, it wasn't until she released her critically acclaimed 'Rock N Roll Pony' in 2005 that Gina made that all important international breakthrough, with an endorsement from BBC radio 2 DJ Bob Harris - making the record a must have commodity. Avoiding the sophomore jinx, Gina's second offering succeeds. She unveiled her new album 'Miles Away' in the UK on May 8th 2006 to the same, if not more enthusiastic, critical plaudits, and support from BBC radio 2 her acclaimed predecessor, Rock N Roll Pony received. This along with a 6 week US national tour supporting World Party sets the stage for her upcoming US release of 'Miles Away', which is widely anticipated in the Americana/Alt Country circles in which she first gained attention.

Indeed, there is muchto like about the way these guys play by the numbers, then fall apart and reassemble themselves in different guises. Gotta say, the new-folk reaction to noise is pretty damn dandy.-Byron Coley, WIRE

Youth Group
Casino Twilight Dogs (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 30TH)
PS, US Youth Group are one of the best-known unknown bands on the indie scene, after their cover of Alphaville's "Forever Young" became a staple on "The O.C." last spring and one of the most downloaded tracks on iTunes, while earning them a #1 single in their native Australia. This release showcases their growing songwriting ambition on tracks like "Sorry", with its intricate Smiths-like guitar interplay, while "Catch And Kill" finds the band exploring their Velvets/Stooges side. "Casino Twilight Dogs", already gold in Australia, is the album that'll solidify Youth Group's growing status in the US.
